Ever wondered where the Veterans would take you on a date?
Contains: Erwin Smith, Levi Ackerman, Hange Zoe
Synopsis: brief Headcannons about where the Vets would take you on a date
Warnings: None
Tumblr media
Erwin smith? Applebee’s💀
lmfao I’m joking, but the way i see it, Erwin strikes me as the goofy, endearingly cringy, single dad type of guy that really believes Applebee’s is the epitome of fine dining. Thankfully, he listens when Levi tells him to have a little class💀
In all seriousness, I think he’d be the type to take you wine tasting, go to see live music performances at local venues, or browsing a cute little craft market on a crisp spring morning.
He’d clean up nice beforehand, probably wear some jeans and a button up shirt, and this man would smell…so…fucking…good😩 like fresh powdery cologne and spearmint gum. You’d get in his car and he’d already have your favorite coffee order in the cupholder waiting for you. Omg i love him
Levi Ackerman? Tea shops, local bakeries, art museums, bookstores, theater.
Levi has a love for the arts, and anything intellectually stimulating. He likes to take his time getting to know the person he’s interested in, so he wouldn’t want to do any kind of activity he couldn’t talk during. It’s a common headcannon among us Levi lovers that he’s an acts of service kind of guy, so you know he’ll be always observing what kind of pastries you order, what kind of tea you like, or your favorite genre of book.
When Levi takes interest in someone, he doesn’t take them for granted. He’s always perusing, always chasing, always loving, so diligently. Gas will never be an issue, this man will drive you across town and back 4 times if you asked him to. He plans dates ahead of time, and always comes prepared, with a wallet full of cash and a tank full of gas, and If he ends the night empty handed, he’ll call it a job well done.
Hange Zoe? Hikes, smoke sesh on the roof, metaphysical shops, farmers markets, picnics, nature walks, the zoo.
Hange is one of those earthly granola people. They’re 100% vegan, grounded to the world around them, and a huge animal lover, so i love the idea that they’ll want to go on a hike to bird watch or pet some moss. Just imagine how cute it would be, you’re both walking around in a stream in the woods, pant legs hiked up around your calves, looking for pretty colored stones for your collection. The sun is peaking through the tree line and you both smell like sweat and sunscreen and earth. Hange finds a turtle or a small frog and catches it to show you🥹 they make me so soft. They’ll also 100% get sunburnt on their nose and cheeks because they can’t ever remember to apply sunscreen there.
Hange is the type to love taking photos of you on dates, and add them to the photo wall in their apartment. If you go to visit, the two of you will pack a bowl and laugh about the memories you have together as you look over the pictures, some kind of cozy music playing in the background.

Remembered I still like Sanders Sides (seriously though it’s a great webseries) but the Hatchetfeild brainworms are consuming anything else (downside of a special interest) so here’s which lord in black each side would be associated with/which lord in black would mess with them/maybe even which lord in black they’d follow in a crossover au + overly detailed explanations
Under the cut cause this got long
Roman- funny how both my previous and my current special interest have a Roman in them. Roman Sanders is a much better person though fuck you Roman Murray /hj. Anyway I think this Roman would be associated with Pokotho. More in a “Roman would get tricked into following him way” than in a “Pokey would want to mess with him” way. In terms of punching bags Pokers seems to go for the people who hate his deal the most and Roman is a theatre kid so. Already not one of the people who hate his deal the most. Okay but actual reason Pokotho has a big thing with conformity, mind control, giving up your real indentity to one singular voice and Roman is known to conform. Trying to be the perfect “good” creativity and turning against Janus mostly because his friends didn’t trust him. Also again, theater kid. So yeah in this hypothetical crossover au there’s probably a timeline where Roman becomes a Pokotho prophet. I can also see him swinging Wiggly though, wanting to be adored kinda like Linda in Black Friday. But I think he’s closer to Pokey in most ways.
Logan- Bliklotep or Pokotho. Okay so most obvious thing for Blinky is eyes, Blinky has a lot of them and Logan either is the orange side or is dealing with the orange side, the mysterious unrevealed character that made his eyes go orange that one time. But on a deeper level in Watcher World Blinky uses Alice and Bills’ conflict against them, trying to make them angrier so he can watch them fight. I can see a similar situation with Logan playing out in this au where the gang goes to Watcher World and Logan’s anger over being ignored is used against him. And if Orange and Logan end up not being the same person (which I stand by that theory) Orange using Logan’s anger against him to cause conflict within the light sides is actually just something I can see happening in the show.
For Pokotho it’s well, if you asked me to make a TGWDLM SaSi crossover Logan would be Paul. He’s the side with the least interest in theatre (I’m not sure if it’s really a dislike though) and while he lacks the panic Paul has for most of TGWDLM and isn’t as much of a normal guy tm I think he fits very well. Let It Out is SUCH a Logan song you don’t even get it like imagine that song but with him and Orange hshshgshshshshshsh I NEED TO MAKE AN ANIMATIC OF IT. Also like back to the ignoring thing can you imagine like “Aren’t you tired of being ignored Logan? Don’t you want to be the star of the show?” I’m going insane. If we’re just putting Logan in the Hatchetfeild universe I think he’s still more Blinky leaning but a SaSi x TGWDLM au with him as Paul would go very hard.
Patton- probably the one in the least sure on so luckily he doesn’t need as long of a paragraph. He’s just so nice I can’t really see him being singled out by any of them but he also isn’t nice in a way where he has Webby vibes so I’m just lost with him. I think either Blinky cause I can see him in a similar situation to Bill in Watcher World or Tinky cause I feel like out of all the sides Patton is the most likely to try to time travel to change or revisit the past and than get boxed because of it.
Virgil- none of them!!! Well at least none of them in particular. Why you ask? Well I think he’d be associated with Webby. Okay listen, if I had a nickel for every time my special interest involved a character associated with spiders that either left or was abandoned by the main antagonist group depending on your theories and became a good guy, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice. Do I need to explain further than that? Obviously Virgil’s situation isn’t nearly as severe as Webby’s and the dark sides are much more redeemable sympathetic villains compared to the lords in bright ass neons black, but my point still stands. Virgil works with Webby which means various horrors have it out for him instead of any specific one!!! Yayyyyyy
Janus- another hard one to place. I’d say he’d work with Wiggly most likely. Basically capitalism/greed (though the greed thing could also have him going more on the Nibbly route with like selfishness desire stuff or even like unrelated he could work for Pokey cause like mind control/manipulation isn’t that much of a stretch from his character, it is a stretch I’m lying to myself) and idk he has the vibes where I feel like he’d work with the lord in black himself and not just one of his brothers. Idk he has Wilbur Cross vibes kind of not really? (it’s the green apples) The thing is Janus still doesn’t hit quite the same level of evil as most antagonistic Hatchetfeild characters do but there’s no way this guy wouldn’t be caught up in something in a crossover au, so maybe he made a deal with them but doesn’t fully worship them. Idek what this post is anymore.
Remus- Hard to place because he’s just such a freak (derogatory) that he kind of just has general cultist vibes (I know there are plenty of freaks in Hatchetfeild completely unconnected to the lords but Remus would be the kind of freak that is connected imo) but if I had to pick I’d say either Wiggly or Nibbly. Wiggly doesn’t have much reason, they just both insane people associated with the color green, royalty, and tentacles. Nibbly does have an explanation kind of. He’s like the god of desire kind of and I think in analysis of how he’s connected to stuff (think Grace in NPMD) that kind of leads to lust associations? Which yeah fits Remus. I can see him working for Nibbly or going insane cause of him (does Nibbly even do that? Does he do things that don’t involve eating people? What even is this post) honestly I don’t really know for him I’m just saying words, would really depend on his role in this hypothetical au
Bonus: c!Thomas- honestly I don’t know for him but dare I say Pokotho. Cause A. Him and Paul don’t really act alike but they both have that panicking normal guy tm energy as protagonists. B. He’s a theatre kid. C. Idk I think it would be screwed up if the guy who the entire show centers around the mind of lost control of his mind and had his entire being warped (infection) 👍

Before You Go // Ethan Landry // Ch.6
Tumblr media
Masterlist Word Count: 1100 Warnings: ANGST and some smoochin Author's Note: I am SO SORRY that this came so late, its been so busy the past few weeks. We should be wrapping up the story soon and it shouldn't take me like two weeks to upload next time lol
After moving to New York with your friends after the Woodsboro killings, you try to leave all of it behind you and start over. You become friends with Ethan Landry, but after Ghostface returns, you start to become suspicious of everyone, especially him.
It felt like hours before Ethan returned to your hiding place in the office. You figured out that you were in that abandoned movie theater Mindy had shown you, the one with the Ghostface shrine. You had no idea what time it was or when your friends were supposed to show up, but you knew that their plan was doomed to fail.
When Ethan came back, he was wearing his Ghostface costume, mask in hand. He kneeled down next to you and began to undo the duct tape around your wrists and ankles.
“What are you doing?” You asked softly.
“Your friends are almost here. When they go into the theater, I need you to run and call the cops.” He avoided your eyes. “I need you to run and keep running, no matter what happens.”
With your hands free, he moved to your ankles. You reached out a tentative hand and brushed his curls from his face. “Ethan, you can’t do this.”
“I don’t have a choice.” His voice was firm, but his eyes betrayed him. You could see how scared he was. “I have to finish this.”
“What on earth could possibly be forcing you to do this?” You whispered. Ethan met your eyes.
“You don’t understand. My entire life, it’s always been about Richie. I’m the youngest, the second son. My dad has always loved Richie more than me, and of course, Quinn is his baby girl so she’s also more important to him.” He shook his head. “I’m a nuisance, an afterthought. He’s told me since I was little that I would never be as good of a son as Richie was.”
“So now you’re killing people because you want your dad to like you?” It seemed ridiculous, but you were lucky to have parents that loved and cared about you. You had no idea how it felt to be constantly second best. “Your dad’s love isn’t worth murder.”
“He wanted me to kill my mom.” Ethan spat. He looked like he wanted to vomit. “He knew she wouldn’t approve of his little plan and told me that he’d be so proud of me if I did what needed to be done.” He began to shake. “Of course, my mom is the only person who ever supported me. I couldn’t do it. It didn’t matter though because a week before I started college, she disappeared.”
Your heart dropped. You never thought that you’d feel bad for Ghostface, but the look on Ethan’s face made you want to cry. Your mom was also one of your biggest supporters and you couldn’t imagine how you’d feel if she was gone. You reached out and squeezed his hand. “Ethan, I’m so sorry about your mom.”
“If I don’t do this, he’ll kill me.” Ethan shook his head. “He’ll kill you too and I can’t lose you.”
“Then leave with me.” You grabbed his face, forcing him to look at you. “Ethan, you can leave. Sam and all of them will probably survive, your dad will go to prison, and we’ll be safe.”
Ethan let out a frustrated growl. “Where will we go?” He stood and started pacing back and forth. “If my dad is arrested, he’ll testify that I was part of this and then we’d be running from the cops for the rest of our lives. Y/N, I can’t ask you to do that, to live that kind of life with me.”
You stood on shaking legs and grabbed his face with both hands. He froze, his eyes wide as he stared at you. “I’m trying to save your life because I care about you. If being with you means running, then I’ll run to the edges of the world with you.” You gave him a small smile. “Let me save you.”
Ethan took a deep breath and slammed his lips to yours. It was full of desperation, his hands pulling you impossibly close as if he was afraid you’d disappear. Your mind was melting as his touch, barely able to comprehend that you were actually kissing him.
Your back hit the wall and you suddenly found yourself caged in by Ethan’s strong arms. One hand was against the wall and his other hand had a vice-like grip on your waist, his fingers sneaking under your shirt to brush against your skin. You shivered at his touch and he smiled against your lips. His teeth nipped at your bottom lip and you parted them slightly. He deepened the kiss, happily exploring your mouth as his hands started to roam. You slid your hand under his shirt, pressing your palm against his stomach. His muscles tensed under your hand and he let out a ragged breath. Nothing mattered in that moment. It was the two of you against the world, nothing could break you apart. It should feel wrong, kissing a boy who’d killed people, but you felt like you belonged there in his arms.
“I’ve wanted to do this for so long.” He murmured. Ethan pulled away and nuzzled his face in your neck, leaving soft kisses across your neck and shoulders. You tangled your fingers in his hair and let out a sigh. “I’ve had a crush on you since the day we met.”
“Really?” You whispered. He nodded. “Well now you definitely have to come with me.”
Ethan raised his head and met your eyes. “Why?”
“Because I’m beginning to realize that I can’t live without you.” You could feel your eyes filling with tears. “I need this, I need you.”
He smiled. “Yeah?”
“Ethan, I-”
The door flew open and Ethan was ripped from your grasp. It was Officer Bailey, eyes fiery with rage. He threw Ethan to the ground and pointed a gun at you.
“So this is why you keep coming in here.” Officer Bailey pressed the barrel of the gun to your forehead. “I should shoot her right now and be done with it. I thought I told you to get rid of her.”
“Dad, she doesn’t have to die.” Ethan coughed, a hand pressed to his ribs. His fall had knocked the wind out of him. “Please.”
“There is so much weakness in you.” Officer Bailey glanced down at his son with disappointment. “Richie would’ve done it by now. You were supposed to kill her at the apartment.”
“Dad, I-” Ethan was cut off by a swift kick to the ribs, causing him to go into a coughing fit. Officer Bailey turned back to you.
“He’ll just have to kill you in front of your friends now. Let’s go sweetheart.”

A3! Main Story: Part 4 - Act 13: Budding Spring - Episode 17: The Family's Strategy Meeting
Tumblr media
Tsuzuru: You didn’t run away this time, Chikage-san.
Itaru: He actually got ready before I did.
Chikage: That’s because you kept fooling around and playing games.
Masumi: Carrying the futon each and every time is such a hassle.
Citron: I’ll leave my sleeping hag here!
Tsuzuru: I wish you'd just say sleeping bag.
Tumblr media
Itaru: Well then, if we’re sleeping here, it’s gotta be for that.
Sakuya: Yes. I thought we’d try to get to know the stage better one more time.
Tsuzuru: … I’m trying not to rush, but I can’t help but be conscious of the Fleur Award.
Itaru: I thought we would one day be recognized and win the Fleur Award if we just performed in a way that suited us, but…
Itaru: Seeing those rankings made me realize things IRL aren’t so easy.
Chikage: It’s made more obvious by the system change, but we’d probably have hit the same wall without the changes anyway.
Masumi: If we want to do it without worrying, shouldn’t we just not think about the Fleur Award at all?
Tsuzuru: Wish we could do that…
Sakuya: Yuzo-san said since the Fleur Award isn’t over yet, his troupe will take it at their own pace. But if we get eliminated here, the next one is in 2 years…
Citron: In 2 years… What will we be doing~?
Tsuzuru: Uhhh… I’ll have graduated…
Masumi: I’ll be in my fourth year.
Sakuya: You’re the only ones in school, so the rest of us might not change as much.
Chikage: On the flip side, I wonder if any of us thought we’d be here two or three years ago.
Itaru: Hell no. I’d think something like, “Acting? The hell’s that?”
Masumi: I never thought I’d be doing theater.
Citron: My goal was to travel the world, I never thought I would stop here~
Tsuzuru: If you told me I’d be writing scripts as a sit-in writer, I’d call you delusional.
Sakuya: I think If you told me I’ll be making a living off acting with the people I love, I’d be surprised!
Tsuzuru: Thinking about it like that, it’s like we’re standing in a future we would’ve only dreamed of back then.
Sakuya: I feel the same. We gathered trustworthy friends, and we get to act in this theater company regularly.
Itaru: But there’s no guarantee things will be the same two years from now.
Chikage: You mean we might go through changes we can’t even begin to imagine, huh.
Citron: If that’s the case, I want all changes to be for the better~
Sakuya: It’d be nice if in two years we stood in a future our current selves can only dream of.
Masumi: Keeping that in mind, what should we do for our performance this time…
Tsuzuru: Obviously, we want to have fun and make sure our audience has fun, too.
Itaru: On top of that, we want to raise our ranking and be nominated. Can’t leave that part out.
Chikage: That’s the entire company’s goal, after all.
Sakuya: Also, after doing the workshop, I realized I really do want to spread the joy of acting to more people.
Sakuya: Of course, I also want to spread MANKAI Company to more people.
Chikage: That’s another reason why it’s important to increase our popularity and widen our range. If that earns us more points, even better.
Itaru: It’s the same as the top batter, whose role is to get the achievements started.
Masumi: But it’s because of those feelings that we’re wasting our time right now.
Tsuzuru: There’s that, too.
Sakuya: …
Masumi: … In the end, we got back to where we started.
Citron: We’re spinning in circles~
Tsuzuru: That sounds real fun, but what we’re doing is going around in circles.
Sakuya: Actually… There’s something I’ve been thinking about.
Sakuya: Some while ago, I was offered a role bigger than those I usually play.
Sakuya: But I’d have to leave the dorm because it’s a local performance…
Sakuya: I was thinking of rejecting it because it came up during this important time with the Fleur Award, and I’m not sure whether I’d be able to balance both things…
Sakuya: — Until just now.
Sakuya: After listening to Towa-kun and Tenma-kun, I remembered what my time during our debut was like.
Sakuya: I had just opened the door to the world of theater back then, and there were a lot of things I didn’t understand.
Sakuya: I was surprised by everything I saw and everything I felt. I was all over the place, frantic.
Sakuya: But I feel like I had more courage to try new things than I do now.
Sakuya: I’ve come to understand a lot of things, such as whether something is necessary or not for a play, and what’s important to me and what isn’t.
Sakuya: But I think that by having to choose, I find myself unable to accept new possibilities as easily as I would have back then.
Tsuzuru: Now that you mention it, grabbing an offered chance with both hands… Only thinking about it afterward, I used to be more like that, too.
Tsuzuru: Though there weren’t that many chances to begin with.
Citron: I understand feeling like you can do anything because you have nothing to lose.
Chikage: Our first play, huh…
Itaru: For us, it’s the debut play, but for you, it’s Oz.
Chikage: Yeah. Devoting myself to something unrelated to my job certainly felt like opening a new door.
Sakuya: My place in MANKAI Company will never change, and the Spring Troupe who are like family to me will support me no matter what.
Sakuya: I think having a place like that makes stepping out into a new world by myself worth it.
Sakuya: There are parts of me that always end up being spoiled when I’m with everyone, so I want to get out there and try new things by myself.
Sakuya: I want to grow as an actor even a little more, and bring that experience back with me.
Sakuya: I don’t want to lose to my past self when it comes to thirsting for taking on new challenges.
Sakuya: … Am I going about this the wrong way?
Tsuzuru: — Nah, I think that’s good.
Tsuzuru: I think I’ll also participate in the scriptwriting camp that I was about to give up on for the sake of the performance…
Tsuzuru: I might get some sort of hint to help me with the script, and I shouldn’t forget what it’s like to try out new things.
Masumi: … In that case, I’ll try taking on an internship. I want to learn about promotions, and how I can be of help to the Director.
Citron: Then… I will participate in the Arts Festival I had been pondering about.
Citron: If you are hesitating, that means you want to do it. It’s important to be honest with yourself!
Chikage: Be honest with yourself…
Itaru: … What will you do, Senpai?
Chikage: What about you? Weren’t you approached about something important at work?
Itaru: Compared to everyone else, it’s not as related to our theater activities.
Sakuya: Still, if you’re interested in it, if it excites you, I think you should go for it.
Masumi: You first joined the troupe for something unrelated to begin with.
Tsuzuru: Come to think of it, you joined because the company offered two meals a day and a place to stay, so it’d be easier for you to spend money on your games.
Itaru: I can’t say anything to that…
Itaru: Being told all that maxed my stagger, so I’m declaring defeat.
Itaru: You should also follow your heart, Senpai.
Chikage: … Then, I’ll also think of a challenge to put myself through.
-
Citron: With that being said, WE’RE BECOMING RUNAWAAAAYS!
Tsuzuru: You can’t call what we’re doing running away from home.
Sakuya: We’ve all decided to leave the dorm and take on a new challenge by ourselves…
Izumi: I see… I’m surprised, but I’ll respect the decision you’ve come upon after discussing it.
Izumi: Let’s practice remotely while you’re away, and work twice as hard when you get back.
Banri: I’ll rearrange the rehearsal schedule with that in mind, then.
Izumi: Let’s look over it together later.
Izumi: I think you were able to prepare for your roles better than usual this time, so rehearsals went by faster. You should be able to get back into the groove easily.
Sakuya: Thank you so much.
Tsuzuru: Thanks a lot.
Izumi: (They’re each taking on a new challenge, huh… This might really be a good way to remember what they felt during their debut.)
-
Chikage: …
Hisoka: Aren’t you going to pack? The Spring Troupe are supposed to be running away from home, aren’t you?
Chikage: Don’t call it that.
Chikage: I’m almost done packing. Though I’m still not sure if I’ll go.
Hisoka: You don’t wanna go?
Chikage: … I don’t think I want to get too close.
Chikage: No, I wonder what it is… I think I’ve come so far that I don’t know what I feel anymore.
Hisoka: … Then, you have to go and find out.
Hisoka: There are a lot of things you won’t understand or remember unless you see them with your own eyes.
Hisoka: Even the things that scare you and that you can’t comprehend won’t be as scary if you face them head on.
Chikage: … You might have a point.

'Blindspotting' Co-Creator Rafael Casal on Pushing Boundaries in Season 2 and the Show's Future
[...] Have you always known that this is a show where you really can just throw in things that would be completely unexpected, but they also just work?
CASAL: I think we figured it out, along the way. We knew that with the movie, the verse at the end was the big earn, and we got there. Every time you make a show a little bit less traditional, you lose some people. That’s just the nature of TV. Some people like their art down the middle. And if you want to appeal to just those people, there’s that show. But there are also a lot of shows like that. I’m really excited to make one of those shows. I would love to make a big mass hit show that goes on for 10 seasons and does all that. But some of the most impactful shows that have stuck with me the longest are not those shows. We knew, going into it, that Blindspotting was the type of thing where, if someone was gonna let us do a weird, artsy show, we wanted to take full advantage of the fact, and that’s what they’re letting us do. We actually are being afforded the creative freedom. As long as it’s always grounded in the point of the show, and it has to do with the prison industrial complex and the effects that it has on a parent, and we can always tie it back to that in an intuitive way, it totally works.
The Western episode works because it’s about a child’s imagination, freeing his father who’s been absent. Fizzly, just symbolically, is there because Sean doesn’t have a protector. He’s pulling away from his mother, and he also thinks he’s grown, but he’s not. He’s still a kid. So, a monster is perfect, and a sweet monster at that. In the third episode, movement is used to explain the history of the N word to a kid from a biracial Black and white parent. We can’t do it with words. We just can’t. We don’t have the time. That’d be a five-hour special, and we still wouldn’t get into all of it. Dance can get us there because it’s about an emotion being evoked. Whether or not people, 20 years from now, go back and watch any part of this show, there are pieces of it that I’m excited to see in other people’s work. I’m excited because our show feels like it’s in conversation with a lot of my contemporary TV artist friends. It’s always exciting to me when they’re like, “You did this, in this episode. I wish I could do something like that in this show that I’m working on.” And I’m like, “You can.”
That whole dance segment really was truly beautiful and emotional to watch.
CASAL: What’s really tricky about our show is that it’s not like we had something to reference for that piece. The only dancers that we know who’ve done anything close to it are our choreographers. We saw them do something along the lines of trying to capture something as complicated as that in their dance show. There’s Misty Copeland doing it with contemporary ballet. There are people in the hip-hop theater world that have tried to not only do this subject, but have tried to tackle complicated things through movement. That’s what dance is, since the beginning of time. People who know the world of dance, know that movement is about expressing the thing that we can’t articulate, that can only be expressed through the body. It’s another element of the show that’s divisive with the audience. Some people are like, “Why the fuck are they dancing?” For other people, movement has played a huge part in their lives and they’re like, “Oh, my God, no one’s ever given me this in a show before,” and that’s really exciting.
Art presents people with a thing that they have to contend with, and it invites a new audience into a space that they’re not used to. Between Season 1 and Season 2, what we really had to do was just tune out the minority of people who were like, “I don’t get the dance thing,” and be like, “That’s okay. You’ll get there.” If you take a kid to a dance performance and they don’t get it the first time, and then you take them too a dance class, they’ll wanna go back to that show and they’ll idolize the dancers, and they’ll wanna go to school for dance. There’s not a lot of dance on television, and we have a deep love for movement, so for us, it was great. The prison industrial complex is reflected through movement on this show. When language fails, that’s our convention. We’re gonna use it when we think it’s important. So for us, that episode had no other way to end. They had to tell him, but he wasn’t gonna understand it. But the writers’ room doesn’t have the words. There were parents in the room that didn’t have the words. It had to be a movement thing because we don’t know how else to do it.
I love that this is a show where you can offset a moment like that by doing scenes in a strip club.
CASAL: Pole dancers aren’t sex workers, in that way. We wanted to actually hire people who dance in those clubs because they know how to do it. We’re not mimicking it. It’s not the bougie gentrified version. These are professional stage dancers, who dance in these venues for these audiences, and these are the moves that happen. Seeing it in its authenticity was really important to us. We hired a lot of the dancers that dance at the club we shot it. We were like, “This is your home turf. Why would we bring people into your house? You do it, and we’ll shoot it as beautifully as possible.” And they were so great about it. When you’re on your fifth take and you’re like, “We need you to get back up there,” and they’re like, “Sure, no problem,” these are tremendous athletes. The skill and strength it takes to be as good as they are, for as long as they are, I was completely floored.
[...] Is there a plan for how many seasons you want to do this?
CASAL: I think every season is the last season, to us. We like to close the door, but keep a window open. That feels like what you should do with every piece of art. If you make a movie, end it and complete the story, but also make people want more. If the timing is right and we have a great idea and the network wants it, and all those things line up, we’ll do more. Or that’s it, and it’s beautiful and contained. I’ve loved shows that go for 10 seasons, and Fleabag was great with two seasons. Could I have watched another season of Fleabag? Yes. It was genius. But also, it was genius to stop. I’m always torn about it. You make art when everything lines up well, and you’re excited and everyone’s excited to do it. The only way I’ll ever know if that’s right, is when that time comes or doesn’t come. But for now, we tried to bring a nice resolution to the end of Season 2 that felt satisfying for the audience, and also, there’s a nice little window at the end, that brings it back to the film and brings it back to the larger world. Should we want to come back, there’s a great place to start.

1, 12, 15, 20 for the book thing 👀
1. Book you’ve reread the most times?
- I thought this would be a tough question but then I thought of The Chronicles of Narnia. If I had to choose a specific story, probably The Horse and His Boy or The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I know the radio theater versions by heart and have read the books countless times. They have the best characters and always leave me with a sense of wonder and hope 💕 other contenders were Eragon, Sovay, and DragonSpell, from the hundreds of times I read them growing up lol. I haven’t had as much time to reread books lately, so there aren’t any more recent reads that I’ve already been rereading
12. Did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings?
- Yes! In AP English my junior year, we read Hamlet and Pride and Prejudice for the first time and I loved both. P&P is still one of my faves, and this is where the obsession began lol. I’m so glad I had such a good teacher in that class - she made it really easy to love those stories. I remember some other books from other years that I disliked (some I hated lol) but no more specifically come to mind that I enjoyed.
15. Recommend and review a book.
- You’ve already read nearly everything I’ve loved and recommended lol. So, I have two recommendations I can’t choose from: Nocturne by Alyssa Wees or Anne of Green Gables.
1. Nocturne: it’s a shorter book, about a ballerina in 1930s Chicago who dreams of more. She becomes prima ballerina of her company but primarily because of a mysterious patron who has interesting demands of her. It feels like it’s a romance but the ending isn’t what I expected. The writing style is what captivated me - the author was a ballerina and somehow she writes in a way that is rhythmic and lyrical and feels like a dance. I loved it. And it’s wild because I just picked it up because of the beautiful cover art lol
2. Anne of Green Gables: another childhood favorite of mine. Anne is an orphan who gets adopted by older farmers, a brother and sister. She is a whimsical child full of love, hope, and an imagination like no other. It’s the beginning of the story of her growing up and she’s just wonderful. Sometimes I got secondhand embarrassment from things she did but they were usually for pretty relatable reasons. She has a delightful way of viewing the world that will make you look around in wonder, too
20. What are things you look for in a book?
- I like stories with hope. The world is a dark place (like many fictional ones, too), and can feel overwhelmingly against us, so I want to read about the stories where they fight on with hope, in whatever capacity. It doesn’t have to be a fairy tale to be hopeful. I look for compelling, well-thought out characters who are flawed and realistic. I do typically look for more plot-driven books (lots of fantasy adventures or mysteries) but they MUST have good character development too or they just fall flat for me. Also, if it has a cool magic system or pirates or dragons or talking cats, you can bet I will pick it up lol

15 questions, 15 mutuals.
Tagged by @mvshortcut @phtalogreenpoison and @emovict0r thanks guys!
Are you named after anyone? - No, my irl name was chosen out of a baby names book. As for Nobody, that was just what I chose because I didn’t think i’d be keeping this blog for long, and @sophieswundergarten eventually called me “Bods” so that is my name now.
When was the last time you cried? Not sure. Maybe a few weeks or months ago? I’ll be honest my memory is not that great.
Do you have any kids? Not yet, maybe in the next 4-10 years.
Do you use sarcasm a lot? Depends on who I’m with. If it’s someone I’m close with then yes.
What's the first you notice about people? - Hm. Interesting question. I don’t really notice people’s outfits, or people in general, I’ll just be honest, but if they express an interest that is similar to mine, they’ll instantly have my attention.
What's your eye colour? - dark brown
Scary movies or happy endings? - happy endings. But when writing myself I prefer angst because I’m a hypocrite. Or maybe I just like my happy endings to be earned first. Who knows?
Any special talents? - I used to do theater when I was in school. My acting is okay. My singing and dancing are atrocious. Yes I’ve had lessons. They didn’t help.
Where were you born? - a hospital in a town in a country
What are your hobbies? - writing fic, reading, daydreaming, dancing to music, and going on walks
Have you got any pets? - No. My partner’s family has an adorable dog I hang out with a lot, but I can’t post a pic because she’s not my dog. Which is a darn shame, because she is the cutest dog in the world. She does look exactly like this emoji though: 🐕‍🦺 just imagine a cuter and friendlier version.
What sports do you play/have you played? - When I was really little I played soccer, tennis, and a season of softball. I was the worst player on every team. This was when I decided to become a theater kid instead. Unfortunately, my singing and dancing were also bad. I did, however, win a prize in middle school at an acting competition.
How tall are you? - around 5’4”
Favourite subject in school? - psychology for sure.
Dream job? - Currently also going down the academia route (I agree with you Milk, it is quite scary). Dream job would be having my research published and making breakthroughs in my field, and if not that then being able to writing original work.
Tagging (no pressure of course!):
So Milk tagged literally almost every mutual I have (maybe not all, but most of them) but if you see this, please take it as an open invitation to participate because this was a fun game and I’d love to hear from you.

Here we go- on time, for once- with The French Connections Caper! As I mentioned, this is one of my favorite episodes from season one, because I am a little angst whore.
Tumblr media
Alrighty- as always, notes are under the cut!
Who in the world reference. GET IT
The rotating pack of mints is so funny. Did acme have that on file?? Did she hack into his bank account??
The picture of julia just looking exhausted with chase is so funny
SIX MONTHS AGO?? THIS SEASON HAPPENED IN SIX MONTHS???
Chase is literally That Stupid
Man can you imagine the episode if PAPER STAR had kidnapped chase???? She would have just killed him
The standing up and saying “I will go” is theater kid level blocking i love that
I’m going to be yammering on about the lens of shadowsan’s double betrayal thing for probably the whole episode but goddd its so good. Severus snape and harry potter’s terf ass wish they had what shadowsan and carmen have
Shadowsan’s motif <333
YOU JOINING A KPOP BAND
Julia in her suit <3333333 YES YES YES part of the reason I love this episode is because its the first time julia sort of gets to stand on her own a little bit…sets up for next season, when she SLAYS
Also, ever notice that in this “virtual tailor” chase has gloves, but in s3 when he finally gets his suit he doesn’t have them? Interesting that some agents get them and some don’t
Chase getting so pissed off about julia saying she didn’t do it alone is SO FUNNY because he’s RIGHT she is NOT talking about him
Your SILENT partner yessir
I LOVE WHEN SHE GETS MAD AND YELLS AT HIM GO JULIA GET HIS ASS
DEFEND YOUR WIFE 💪
Chase’s ego is so large that it blinds him- jackie made a post on it already so I’ll just reference that, but its brilliant characterization
You can make yourself look like a law enforcement imbecile jusst fine
I love the way julia storms off. She cn’t take very large steps so its just very angry and quick heel clatters
She WANTS to be planning something nefarious but unfortunately she must be on the beach
Poor baby she looks so uncomfortable dsghfjda. Also another instance of a stellar outfit that we never get to see again </3
Ivy is actually weirdly talented at making gigantic detailed sand castles. That wave was so poorly timed her poor vile central
Also. wicked wicked
IVY YELLING AT ZACK IN THE BACKGROUND WHILE CARMEN JUST DOES NOT ACKNOWLEDGE ANYTHING
Yeahhh well you say you’re never going back to vile island. And technically you are right
FIELD TRIP!
THE SHOCK WHEN BRUNT SAYS THAT DJHDSFD
PLS SHE BUMPED BELLUM ON THE WAY UP WHY DID SHE DO THAT
I love the role reversal that shadowsan and brunt do here. Shadowsan is expected to be The Worst and Brunt is carmen’s closest thing to a mother. But in actuality….brunt is a murderous spiteful little bitch and shadwsan is evolving into dadowsan
Jsdfads the look on shadowsan’s face. He knows that everything just got a looot more complicated for him
At least he’s kind of self aware right
Chase only being nice to her because he knows she’s smarter than he is is so funny. He drinks the most vaguely mysoginistic respect women juice on the planet
You have no idea how much the line “wow, foamy” has impacted my daily life. I literally say it every single time i brush my teeth. I can’t stop
NOT THE VILE BRAND LOGO ON THE TOOTHPASTE AND EVERYTHING
Chase lying on the floor looking like he just died of rabies is the funniest fucking thing
Tumblr media
American outlets in france 👍
Carmen did a whole costume change between noon and sunset
Mesmerized by the way that top tuft of hair she has blows in the wind. Wow. could watch that all day
I love how the message goes “SURRENDER WE HAVE CHASE DEVINEAUX” and carmen is just like. Wait. partner??? Travel partner??? 😌😌😌
She’s kind of chill about mentioning that vile is definetely going to kill devineaux and then capture her in this little plan of theirs
“Which is why I’ll need to be careful” she says, walking into a closed off basement with no preparation at all
Why the hell would they put where they were keeping him in the Evil Email they sent her wouldn’t that just set her up to try a rescue mission
Props to raf for making the most diverse array of clueless grunting noises I have ever heard in my life
I cANT HELP BUT LAUGH WHEN BRUNT SAYS “BONJOUR” LIKE THAT. SHES TRYING SO HARD TO BE SINISTER BUT SHE’S JUST TEXAN
Wheeze acme set the expectation for him to be kidnapped for employment reasons
ASK YOU WHAT he’s so stupid i love him
“I’ve seen your keycard” said with the exact same tone as. Someting. I don’t know i love how she says that she’s just like Yeah. I’ve seen it. Hah
Shadowsan and that damn sword for intimidation tactics
Oogh that twisted little smile when brunt goes to get the brain scrambler
Alternate episode where chase gets the hard way and carmen just walks in to a sad sack of broken bones on the floor
I love the almost impressed look on shadowsan’s face when he tells her that he’s singing the french national anthem. Like. of course he is
Interesting little detail that chase leans over and spits out the gag while carmen and company are just kind of making quips about him being tortured
I love he some good drunk but not drunk character tropes in cartoons. Drunk adora. Laughing gassed up anne. Sick luz. We didn’t get drunk carmen but we did get drunk chase and you know what I’m fine with that
THE WAY HIS EYES FLICK TO THEM WHEN HE SAYS BILE IS ALWAYS SO FUNNY TO ME
Love how shadowsan doesn’t care at all what happens to chase. He cares about carmen, but he’s still a VILE operative. She’s pretty much the only one he cares about until he’s spent a little while with TR
Mmm the music is so good in this ep as well
Thinking abt how if ivy was controlling red drone and carmen was sneaking off to rescue chase…that was zack in carmen cosplay who was dramatically standing ontop of the roof
The weird little petnames brunt uses for chase are also so funny
I have wanted to edit that shot of shadowsan running and jumping over chimneys onto the dinosaur game for SO LONG
Its cool how different the body types of the carmen decoys are. Its pretty easy to tell who’s who even with their faces not showing
IVYYYY
You can rock red, zack. I mean. You pick a devil costume out by yourself in s3 so clearly you know it too
I am shocked that she didn’t check the dumpster because. THATS WHERE I WOULD HAVE LOOKED. I guess she knows carmen’s style well enough- in s3 when they’re talking about catching carmen sandiego 101 zuko and luz mention that part of it was knowing that she always takes the high ground, anakin. And while this is zack the two of them are pretty well trained on carmen’s movements, clearly. They jump across the rooftops and everything just like she does to be convincing
JSHDGDS HE JUST GETS SLAMMED
BAIT N SWITCH…alright here we go
I like the little setup she has there. She brought the electrocuter thing because she had to get the cuffs off, but she uses it in the fight later too
Another little detail in the animation of chase’s sweat dripping to the floor when he falls
That little interaction between the two of them is so cool. Carmen doesn’t know what to expect, or how she can see or anything. OR that she knows exactly who she is
Pls its 4:30 in the morning the carmen team really do have a messed up sleep schedule
Sleepy julia in pajamas <3333
Me watching a france based murder mystery show: haha. Gendairme. I know how to pronounce that
It is a little inconsistent how carmen has so much difficulty dragging him out here…when these three meet again in mexico carmen just shoves him off the wrestling ring and into a chair with very little effort, although that may be evidence of her training and getting stronger over time.
Anyway, I’m exTREMELY excited for this fight. It is SO BRUTAL
THE BENDNG THE METAL IS. GOD
She’s so. Like. hulking??? Its so creepy how she moves, especially when she uses all these little petnames at the same time as she’s cracking her neck
THE CATCH OF HER FOOT IS SO GOOD GOD. brunt KNOWS her and even if she didn’t maybe expect her to have a gun she can catch her move pretty easily. This entire fight is full of brunt catching what carmen is going to do as she does it- except for the time with the taser
GOD the crashing into the chair augh that must have hurt so bad wheeze
Brunt is terrifying. She doesn’t slink around or do any acrobatics. She’s just like a final video game boss that has a tracker on your location and does not stop coming
GOD YEAH SEE. SHE CATCHES CARMEN’S KICK AND THEN JUST S L A M S HER INTO THAT SHELF
Carmen is again so used to the athletic, fast-moving operatives who usually match her in everything but cleverness, or use long distance weapons like paper star does. But brunt….it doesnt matter how smart carmen is when brunt can overpower her and fling her into the concrete like a bug
Goddd you can see carmen thinking about what the hell she can do. She knows strength isn’t going to work, so she has to find something else to distract brunt while she gets her baby taser
It makes sense actually now that the taser doesnt knock brunt out like a crackle rod would. Its meant for disabling hadcuff electronics, not seizing up the muscles of full grown woman
THE DESPERATION ON CARMEN’S FACE AS SHE ELECTROCUTES BRUNT IS SO GOOD. she knows this is not a good situation. She does. This is not her usual fighting style, obviously. She just wants to get out
The SMOKE when carmen gets electrocuted fuck
UNGH i love how different this fight is. Carmen stumbles on the run to the door and THAT is how you know she’s really in trouble. She’s just yanking on it trying to get out at this point. Its more instinct than battle- she’s just clawing at ANYTHING that could help her
And then her coat gets ripped. Every time her coat is off in this show she is not in a good spot. Becauseeee COLOR THEORY!! That red is her sign she’s got a chance, but when it comes off and gets destroyed everything. Is. green. Same thing happens in hot rocks of rio, so look out for that next week. It’s really interesting to notice once you find the patterns
MMGH WHEN SHE CLUTCHES HER SIDE AND THEN HER HAND GETS CRUSHED AND HER EYES WIDEN AND SHE JUST KNOWS
That gasp when she’s down on thr ground will be the death of me. And then the rattling on the grate just. Trying to get away and do ANYTHING to save herself from this person she once called a mother figure its SO angsty god i love it
There were NO breaks in that fight scene until carmen was on the ground with absolutely no choices left. It keeps the emotion UP and TENSE and it is FANTASTIC. We get a break once we cut back to shadowsan and the gang…player telling carmen she just needs to make it a little longer, because the cops are better than being dead
Also. zack just waking up with the banana peel on his head.
Why does player have the individual tracking locations of all the cops in the city
Seaosn one and season two were written and made pretty much at the same time, which was SUCH a strong choice. THIS FINALE sets up ALL OF SEASON TWO and SEASON TWO’S FINALE. AUGH. it is such a fantastic end to the season
I love that carmen gets to learn that it wasn’t this woman who rescued her from “the side of the road” here. She doesn’t have to live with that idea in her head….that she could be saved by the same woman who was trying to kill her
Instead she’s saved again by the one who really cared all along- since the moment he saved her from the fire
Please carmen looks so small on the ground there its so scary to watch
God that returning to vile island is for carmen a fate worse than death is so. Its so
Ive always been frustrated with carmen for not. I dont know. Lying?? Saying ok sure ill go back fine to buy herself some time, so that the cops could come in and help her. But i get it. Yknow?? Carmen isn’t that person. But boy would that have prevented a lot of the rib breakage that is about to go down
God. how limp carmen is in that moment. She flinched away when brunt goes to touch her face, but she just looks. Kind of regretful. She doesn’t really, i think, expect what is about to happen. She just thinks brunt is going to bat her around some more..
Also. how limp carmen is when brunt pulls her into the “hug” is also so scary. GOD i don’t know if its because she’s trying to prepare herself or if she’s in so much pain or if its because some part of her still trusts brunt
That tragic look almost into the camera when she realizes what brunt is doing is HAUNTING i love that sm
This is so dark btw. The foreshadowing way back in episode two for this when brunt hugs her so hard that she feels something crack to now, when that motherly role has twisted into. This
That last gasping breath carmen takes is another one thats just so. Augh. she is really and truly about to die
God the knowledge that at some point carmen just closed her eyes and let it happen because there was nothing else she could do is. What the fuck. Or maybe she just couldn’t breathe enough anymore to keep them open
SHADOWSAN!!
THE WAY SHE SCRAMBLES BACK AS SOON AS BRUNT GOES LIMP IS. god i love that shot. She’s so. Worn down at that point she’s more like a wild animal than anything ig. Just trying to get away get away get away
And then the way she, still gasping for breath and her voice choked with pain, insults shadowsan because her voice is the only defense she has against him right now
Pls i love shadowsan he doesn’t know how to not be intimidating. Running at her with a sword. “I did not come here to take you back.” this moment scared me SO BAD when i was 13 watching this for the first time. I expected it to cut back to her lying on the floor with some grevious injury, maybe to be narrowly saved by her team but frantically rushed to the hospital or something.
The shadowsan twist is one of the best I think I’ve seen. Its set up and foreshadowed, enough that you could maybe see it coming on first and have all those little “ohh” moments on later watches. When you really step back and say, “what is the consequence of shadowsan doing all of this?” its carmen being able to escape and not becoming a vile operative. Its. yeah. I dont know. Its so good
AUGH the fear on her face. He steps over coach’s pretty much lifeless body, draws his sword. All she has is a fucking wrench
Player gripping his monitor and screaming her name is SO,, UNGH HE THINKS SHE’S DEAD
And the way they cut back with just the limp bodies around them, as shadowsan sheathes his blade. They knew what they were doing obviously
MM AND THEN THE LITTLE CHIME OF CARMEN’S MOTIF WHEN WE SEE THAT SHE’S ALIVE AND SAFE
THAT IS A QUESTION pls i’ve made fun of shadowsan here before because like. Yes. please do follow me into the dark hole no questions asked. I Will Not Stab You once we are at a more convenient and private location that you have moved yourself to. Or transport you back to VILE. just trust me okay carmen follow me right now
LOCK US UP,,, YEAH. REACH US. i love that little…its so small. The us and the little admission of how VILE works (hey- also sets up season THREE’s finale. wild). Yes yes yes.
I love how shadowsan doesn’t want to admit it. But they have been in it together
GOD YEAH AND THEN. SHE DROPS THE WRENCH and THATS how you know she trusts him, and understands. Thats her last line of defense gone
“It was you….you were the one who found me.”
“YOU ARE IN NO CONDITION TO LEAVE HERE ON YOUR OWN” i love how shouty he is in this season he doesn’t have a gentle voice. He doesnt really. Know how to be vulnerable
But he tries. He tries so hard. He just. He says please and reaches out to her
DOOGY
Girlie im sorry but opening that grate wider would not have made brunt fit any better
That mass of flashing lights in the city is such a good way to show how far they went. Also. why did shadowsan make carmen walk like three miles with her fucked up ribs wheeze. He made her climb some stairs and everything
But he’s soooo gentle with her when they’re walking its so sweet. He lets her lean on him and helps her down to the ground so she can rest…makes sure she is safe before he says anything else and tries to get her medical attention. He is the dadowsan
Ungh gina. Gina gina please. Please put any kind of emotion into “argentina tell me everything now” like thats KIND of an emotional line..,, urgh. The problem i have with gina i think is that she is a fine ACTOR but being a VOICE ACTOR is a LOT DIFFERENT THAN THAT. she doesnt have all her little nice facial expressions and stuff she has carmen who is already inexpressive as is. So when she says that line it just sounds so flat
He’s only lying about it a little bit, really honestly
Shadowsan: a jerk
“You knew what they’d do to me when I said no” is such an underrated line i love that one
THE COAT WAS EMPTY!!
Carmen sounds so much like black sheep when she says “i knew it” and I love that so much. I don’t know if that was a directing choice given to gina but it was a good one. Also carmen forgetting her ribs are fucked up lmaoo
FIRST SHADOWSAN SMILE WHEN HE SAYS HE KNWS CARMEN WOULD ENJOY PROVING THAT TO HERRR that is the moment i think when he really becomes human :)))
Tumblr media
She got my posture fr
That shot of shadowsan walking away from her as the police lights flash between them and the architecture frames everything is soo pretty
I guess i scare easy when i see a drawn sword is such a good line its so funny. i would too! Maybe he didnt have to extend the ruse all the way until he was a mile away from the school and no one was in sight except carmen herself but alright
IT WAS HIMMM WITH THE HELICOPTER I LOVE THAT REVEAL
NO WAY!!!! I love that its kind of a black sheepism
Shadowsan is like yeah i was happy you escaped but GIRLIE I DIDNT THINK YOU WOULD START FIGHTING CRIME LMAO???
The lug jsdfhds
Julia’s like not chief. Not chief with the random carmen accusations too
Used it to bait him?? How would she have done that?? She’s like in the cheese and breath mints store and she goes over the intercom like “chase devineaux please report to the shadowy death basement! We have your keycard <3”
AND LEFT WITH AN EVIL VILE MASTERMIND KSHGDFJGDS player is so right for that
That shot of her sitting and talking to player as the sun rises behind her is also beautiful i love that shot
Ahhh the way she gets up so carefully because of her injuries its so good
“A present” okay its okay you can tell him carmen
I HAVE A FEELING WE’RE GOING TO HAVE MORE CAPERS TO PLOT WOOHOO SEASON TWO BABYYYYY
ONCE MORE the shot of her standing there and the camera zooming way out is ALSO gorgeous its my blog header actually
YEAHH AND THEN THE CREDITS MUSICCC
God i cant believe we’re already done with season one!! I am SO EXCITED for season two- its my favorite out of all of the seasons and its where things REALLY get juicy. We’ve got the setup and standard formula out and we can start playing around with dynamics, backstories, history, new cast, lore, character development…yes yes yes yes yes i am so excited!!!
Love this episode, solid and fantastic end to a seaosn, which cs finales usually are. Alright- with the feeling that I’m going to have more capers to react to, this is me signing off of season 1 for cs weekly!!

across the spider-verse comments
I saw the new spider-verse yesterday with my friends, and shall dump all of my ramblings about it here. (spoilers!!)
Before that though: we had to walk to the theater in the biggest downpour (+ some storm lightning/thunder going on) we’ve had this year and we were all soaked. I’m fully expecting us to have colds in future sdhjdas
* note that “biggest downpour” here just means that the streets had flat “rivers” and we got soaked but it wasn’t like. “damn we’re drowning” kinda levels. Just really Wet.
Was worth though. And luckily afterwards it completely stopped so we could walk to a restaurant in peace.
ANYWAY, SPIDERVERSE.
Of course it slayed visually, i don’t need to tell ya that.
Gwen's universe being consistently messy/striking with colors until the conflict was resolved
I actually didn't understand Spider punk 50% of the time
the miles apology videos shshsns
the "stop talking about your holes" joke actually sent me, send help
not a deal-breaker, but we felt like the glitches were a biiit too conviniently distributed with too long breaks in-between
my friends and I are kinda convinced Miguel is operating on false assumptions, considering the world where miles saved the cop was getting the Spot-Holes but it didn't seem like the same thing Miguel was experiencing... I also don't know why both Miles universes aren't just disintegrating as we speak - we did think about it being more meta on what makes sth a "spiderman story" but then the 42-universe should have had some consequences too right? Or is the lack of a spiderman to go through losses okay, you just "can't" have a spiderman not go through losses? We might need a rewatch to be fair. But something seems fishy here.
idk if I knew this when I watched the first movie but I LOST MY MIND realizing that the spider in the first movie GLITCHED TOO, signaling that it was from another dimension from the start :00 I had such a mindblow as I realized this, and I might have known this during the first movie But Still. God.
we also think that the tech spider person that operated the teleporter might not not have turned it off bc she felt sympathetic but because she knew he wouldn't be sent to his universe? We aren't sure on this front (because why wouldn’t she tell everyone) but we were kinda confused on why she'd change her mind narratively when she rly didn't seem to have build up towards that (to us)
I thought I was imagining it but I THINK i slightly heard prowlers sound theme when Miles was thrown back into the universe which now in hindsight (unless I'm misremembering the placement) is actually insane too.
that whole “wrong universe” reveal was great too with the hair questioning, awkward confusion in the mom’s face and how Gwen was looking towards an empty room and all- just to come together in the glitch as the definite reveal.
(I feel slightly insane for this and i need someone to tell me I’m not) Emphasizing Miles' shoes during the scene with his roommate and then later focusing on a shoe shot of prowler!miles before he reveals his face!! Insane associative connection my brain was made and I assume was intentional??? (but i do feel insane for this)
it was a lil weird that they were like “yeah this teleporter totally isn’t questionable and creepy” and then it did what they said it would? Like I was half-expecting it to be a murder machine or something sdhsdj- i get that they probably just meant that it’s ominous in how it looks but still, felt a bit like a misleading line to me.
There was one person that loudly commented on the movie twice, and one was a major L and the other time a major W.
The L was that they said “emotional damage” during the silence after Miles’ came out to alternate-universe mom. Was kinda,,, disorientating. Wasn’t a fan.
The W was at the end HSJASD they just went “no way, are you fucking kidding me?” and the whole theater burst out laughing. Apparently this exact thing also occurred during a friend’s showing, so this is a canon event for ATSV showings in my heart now HSHSJ
While watching the leadup to the end, I actually had that moment of “oh no. i saw someone joke they need to hold on until march 2024... oh no it’s gonna end isn’t it.... oh no” but when it did I was HYPED instead - the fact that a western animated movie got to do this?? Insane. I approve. Absolutely.
I do think this movie lacks a proper conclusive feelings, despite Gwen’s good framing of the movie. I’m not saying that’s bad, it’s a good 2nd movie in a trilogy and amazing build up, but yeah.
Anyway, good movie.

DBZ The World's Strongest Reaction
DBZ movie rewatch #2, the World’s Strongest reaction.
Tumblr media
[In the poster you could be fooled into thinking that's a moon in the background. Also, first appearance of the Artic setting for these movies.]
Honestly, I’m a little underwhelmed. I mean, the movie makes sense, but somehow I can’t connect like I did with “Dead Zone.”
One thing that I liked was that, once again, this mainly involves a member of the Supporting Cast, this time being Master Roshi. It was a nice bit of continuity that Roshi is actually known throughout the world as “The God of Martial Arts.”
This time, all the bad guys are Robots, so it’s okay to go all out. Although, they are still pretty conservative with how they deal with them. I also really like it when DBZ does Elemental stuff – the Pink one has Ice Powers, the Green one has electric whips, and the Yellow one can stretch (that’s like water, I guess). Of course, Dr. Willow cuts a very distinct figure, plus he’s even larger than Garlic Jr. (It might seem weird that he’s a GIANT brain in a jar, but keep in mind, there are giant humans in Dragon Ball, like the Ox King.)
Goku has to go Kaiohken x4 to try and beat Willow. It’s hard to imagine that this guy is tougher then first-appearance Vegeta.
There’s also a sub-theme of Gohan/ Piccolo. This is where the “I love Mr. Piccolo” Song is from, Gohan has to deal with Piccolo being possessed, and right before Willow gets taken out, Gohan/ Piccolo together jump up to distract him. While Krillin is Goku’s best friend, Piccolo is Gohan’s best friend.
Also, Dr. Willow is the first bad guy to be killed by the Spirit Bomb. It’s fitting, because one of his powers is to turn big swaths of land into desert, and his last resort is to try to blow up the world. So, calling for the power of Everybody to finish him off was cool. (I wonder how many kids in the movie theater raised their hands up?)
5/10 For me, it’s missing what the French call… a certain... I don’t know what.
Tumblr media
[What’s the deal with Songs? Unlike insert songs, this and Dead Zone had stuff that was part of the story. Gohan was drunk in the first one, and this one’s a dream. Maybe they need to do one for Goten/ Trunks, just for the memes.]

Sexual Awaken-ring at The Public Theater
I’m reckoning with the fact that I probably had my sexual awakening at a WWE event as I sit a few yards away from the ring, the air full of musk and sweat and beer and breath- like being inside of a burp.
Tumblr media
I haven’t watched wrestling in so long, but I get up and cheer when I feel like I’m supposed to. Luckily, this is the Royal Rumble, an annual event where a new wrestler enters the ring every 90 seconds. It is essentially a last man standing style match, where people are eliminated throughout by being thrown out of the ring (because of this, there are usually no more than about 8 ppl in the ring at a time). When it gets down to the last 10 seconds, a giant countdown appears above, buzzing loudly to introduce the next wrestler (this was, in my opinion, the funniest part of the night: watching everybody sit down just to get right back up again and again and again).
Tumblr media
As I sat around all these people cheering and drinking and eating in the arena, all 50,000 of us crowded in to watch a fight, the historical similarity was not lost in me. I imagined that we were all in an open-air colosseum, its magnificent architecture completely blocked from view as people eating turkey legs piled on top of each other to get a better view of the stage.
Tumblr media
The mention of turkey legs reminded me of another instance of aggressive mainstream public theater: Medieval Times. Medieval Times is a massive building shaped like a castle in a town near you. Enter, and you’ll be transported into a world of princesses and dragons, where the only thing to do is buy merch and watch the duel. Everyone is assigned a section and a color, and you root for whatever color knight you were assigned. Last time I went I was probably 6 years old, and my family and I cheered loudly as the Red Knight came speeding into the arena on the back of a horse. Before The Great Battle begins, the knights choose someone from the audience to bestow the flag, which doubles as a sash, onto. Little me did not know this, so when the Red Knight and his horse stopped in front of me and lowered the pole, my mom and aunt yelled “grab it!” and as I struggled to detach the flag, they stood up to get it down as the knight dashed away.
I can’t remember how I reacted- I don’t think I really cared, but my mom and aunt acted like it was special, so I began to believe it. My mom fastened the sash on me and seconds later someone came to take a picture with a bright flash. I was in between bites of a turkey leg and didn’t really like having my picture taken, but it all happened so fast. The rest of the night went without interruption, as we all cheered on our knight in an old-timey fashion. I took the sash home and I still have it somewhere- it reads “Queen of Love and Beauty”.
Tumblr media
Therein lies the main difference between the two realms of public theater: in Medieval Times, everyone is very aware that they are playing a character, the place is literally called Medieval Times. But when one enters the WWE arena, the rules of the real world ostensibly still apply. Of course, everyone knows that WWE is also fake. It’s basically a rite-of-passage to growing up, like finding out the tooth fairy isn't real. There is a suspension of disbelief in the air, but not a complete theater like at Medieval Times. People gather around to see these real people fight, whose real names and political views and possible history of steroid use are all just one google search away. That’s the other thing that causes WWE to teeter the line of real and fake: those who sign up to perform stunts at WWE are also signing up for the possibility (not guarantee) of fame. WWE wrestling is “all fake and doesn’t matter”, until it does: the aforementioned steroid use to look bulkier, the injuries that affect them for the rest of their lives, the touring, performing, and practicing with little time to breathe in between, and of course the fame (even if it is ultimately C or D list) all seem pretty real to me. There is also the metaphorical “realness” of it: WWE storylines and characters often reflect or say something about society. An example of this being the “good vs. evil” mindset pretty much all of the storylines take on, or as it is called in the wrestling world, “face vs. heel”.
Tumblr media
I was going to write something about this aspect of WWE in particular (I even thought of a title as I watched the wrestlers in the ring gang up on disgraced YouTube star-turned-fighter Logan Paul to an uproarious audience: “Good vs. Evil in the WWE”.). But 1. This topic has been talked about a million times 2. That would take a lot of research in order to be done properly and 3. That’s actually not what I found myself thinking about during the show. As I watched Edge, who I once had a massive crush on (though not who I credit with my sexual awaken-ring, that I’ll never tell) and Roman Reigns glisten and gleam while wearing a bright red lei, my mind was elsewhere. “KISS!” My brother and I had jokingly shouted at Reigns and Kevin Owens during the main event. I guess I wasn’t joking.

realized that if i have a lot of thoughts on something and no one will listen to them i can put them on here!
So today I was thinking about animation. You know how people don’t respect animation as a form of entertainment or media? I wish I knew why because I feel like, if anything, animation takes a lot more effort than live action movies or TV does. Of course, that might not be true in all cases but in some it definitely is.
I assume that some of the reason animation is not respected as much is because it is often associated with children entertainment. But this is stupid because yes, children entertainment often is animated but it’s also live action! And! wait till you here this! There are animated adult shows! Family Guy?? Family guy has a bunch of awards and is a respected show. It’s stupid but adults respect it and watch it. But the moment there’s something that’s animated (that’s not some dumb show like Family Guy (no hate to Family Guy)) these people won’t even bother watching it.
Well then I started thinking about Super Hero movies. God. Marvel, DC, whatever, I’m so sick of it. I understand that fans of these franchises are sick of hearing this and it also doesn’t necessarily apply to every single super hero movie ever, but this genre is so played out! If you look at Marvel specifically, you have some movies that are good and fun but then you get to a point where every single movie is the same idea with big battle, we’re almost dying!, how are we going to win?, we have to use this weird ancient/alien technology to save the world! It’s boring now!
And then you have the hero repetition. Like The Batman. Sure you can say they made that Batman movie because there was a different villain or something like that but it’s boring! I don’t mean that the movie itself is bad or boring, I saw it in theaters myself, it’s just a boring concept (same with the Marvel movies, they’re not necessarily bad, just overdone and are boring concepts at this point). Further with this, why are there three Spidermans? And do not get this twisted. I love Spiderman, Andrew Garfield’s being my favorite, but why are there three? Maybe there’s a real reason but to me it just seems like an excuse to keep profiting on the popularity of Spiderman by bringing him back several times.
Further, I’m already finding the current era of hero movies to be (Mostly) insufferable but imagine what they will look like in the future! Years down the line what will they do? Keep making new Spiderman and Batman films (and don’t forget about the tv programs)? When will the next Superman come out? I can’t imagine.
I also want to make a point that I understand that DC and Marvel movies are based on comic books. My knowledge of how accurate the films are to the comics or how many of them are actually based on the comics is very limited. I mean was Infinity War in the comics? What about Suicide Squad? I genuinely have no idea. If they are, it really doesn’t change my argument at all. It’s still boring to have all these heroes with their stories get pushed down to be a constant retelling. Also, I’m not saying that a movie like Avengers is boring. That’s probably when it was good! But then the shit kept going! Like... That’s the repetition. It never concludes. It’s like when a show should’ve ended at like season 5 but kept going for 15. And I’m bored of it. Another point to make is that certain some new hero movies say, Black Panther, I wouldn’t necessarily fall into this category but, put the Black Panther cast into a movie with Iron Man (RIP I know), Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, Tom Holland Spiderman, Dr. Strange, and any of those other bitches in a big battle to save the universe...
Anyway, straying from the new, boring hero movies (Black Adam, Shazam, etc.), I started thinking about newer (kind of) hero movies that I thought were good and realized all three were animated. The three I came up with were Megamind, Lego Batman, and Into the Spiderverse. HEAR ME OUT! First of all, I’m not saying that Lego Batman is the best superhero movie ever made or that Megamind is better than the entire MCU or anything like that. Just listen to my thoughts here.
So first, Megamind. Megamind will never be taken seriously by everyone and I’ve already accepted that but it is a magnificent movie. It plays with the tropes of hero and villain so well. The entire concept of a villain beating the hero, getting bored in his victory and take over, creating a new hero so that he has someone he can have someone to defeat again, and in the end defeating him as a hero is insane! Completely flipping the idea of hero and villain like that is such a refreshing and entertaining thing to see. I’m so bored of seeing the repetition of some guy is a hero and has to face this big villain, whether the villain is human or not, and has to save the world or some shit. Seeing the villain become the hero is just so much more interesting! And it’s not like a Loki or Crowley (Supernatural) situation where viewers question whether they’re truly villains or not or see them as a good guy either way; Megamind was a villain but had a real change where he realized that he had to go in another direction.
Lego Batman is one that I will need to strongly defend here I’m guessing. I know I talked about the repetition of Spiderman and Batman yet two of my good hero movies are Batman and Spiderman? Well if we compare Lego Batman to the 2022 Batman with Robert Pattinson, I would argue that one of them is a lot more interesting. The Batman was a good movie, but it’s been done before. Even if it was a slightly different storyline or had some different main characters or something, we’ve all seen the basic Batman story. So why is Lego Batman different? Lego Batman sort of plays on the overplayed Batman tropes. So Batman is his usual foreboding, dark self, but at the same time it’s kind of weird in a way that sort of pokes fun at that part of Batman. They do the same with the other characters, like Robin and the Joker. It’s still Robin and Joker but they play with their characters, making fun of their relationship with Batman. I understand it’s for comedy, but the change of classic Batman characters and tropes make it a more interesting and entertaining Batman movie. Now I’m not necessarily saying that Lego Batman is better that any other Batman movie; I’m saying that, in this era, instead of making a basic, overdone Batman movie, Lego Batman provides a new interesting take on the Batman story.
And Into the Spiderverse. For starters it is different than the other Spidermans because it is not about Peter Parker, it’s Miles Morales. The whole concept of Into the Spiderverse makes it different than the other Spiderman movies. Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland all have great Spiderman movies (like great movies, I love them) but isn’t doing something new with Spiderman and different Spider..people? crossing universes and coming together better than if they had just made a new Spiderman movie with Donald Glover or something? And that was not a dig on Donald Glover, I am an advocate for him in a Spiderman movie, Spiderverse sequel maybe??
And I know you’ve been thinking it. What about Spiderman: No Way Home? It was a great movie!! In the same way Spiderverse was but in a more nostalgic and cool way. Bringing the old Spidermen together with Tom Holland was a great idea and I’m glad they did it. 10/10 much more interesting than Infinity War.
So is this argument for animation or against hero movies? I guess I don’t know. I was just thinking about all these things and thought I’d write them down. Some closing thoughts: I am not saying that any hero movie is bad. I’m sure there are some bad ones but I am not saying that. I just think that the entire concepts and main plots of a lot of these movies are overdone and becoming boring. I’m also not saying that Megamind and Lego Batman are thee best hero movies. They’re some of my favorites but I wouldn’t say that they are undeniable better than most or anything like that. I guess my main point might be why is animation not taken seriously when some of the more interesting hero movies, which has become a draining genre, are animated? Of course that’s heavily based on my opinion but I was just thinking about it.

[movie review] everything everywhere all at once (2022)
honestly the thing that has held me back from reviewing this movie sooner even though i saw it in theaters is that i just didn’t think i would have anything to say about it that you haven’t heard a few hundred times from other people, like i just don’t really think i have a very unique take on it? but after seeing it a second time (at over 35,000 feet on the back of a headrest, so not exactly the overwhelming visual spectacle it was the first time i saw it), i realized that it’s not just a great movie, it’s one that i genuinely find very personally meaningful, so i can’t really just write a little blurb about it when i write an end of the year post or whatever.
so, yeah, my entrypoint to this movie was basically “i love michelle yeoh.” i also happen to love scifi/action movies, and i like the idea of multiverse stories, though now that the mcu has gotten their hands on that one some of the shine has certainly worn off. i also generally end up loving martial arts movies when i’m prompted to watch them, though they also aren’t something i generally actively seek out, which i probably ought to fix at some point.
but, again, the main thing that got my butt in the seat was being an unabashed michelle yeoh stan. so luckily for me this movie is not only a tour de force of her kicking the crap out of everyone around her, it’s also designed to absolutely live or die with the enormous feats of acting it’s asking from her. and, appropriately enough in a movie whose central thrust is about choosing life and love in the face of overwhelming pressures to choose death and despair, she delivers everything the movie needs and then some.
(spoilers, cw: suicide mention)
this is a mindbending scifi/action movie, but at its core is some of the most intensely personal stuff you can possibly imagine. the everyday stresses that bury the joy of life. a marriage falling apart. contemplating ending one’s life. just… grappling with the fact that the world is bigger than we are, that we are puny. taking all of the above to its logical extreme and concluding that nothing matters, that there’s no point in caring about anything. walking right up to that brink… and then coming back from it in the most resounding way.
there are so many things to love about this movie. but i think the moment that will forever be seared into the deepest parts of my movie fan consciousness is when the protagonist’s husband pleads with his wife to stop fighting. when one of his alternate universe versions explains to her that being kind and trying to set people at ease isn’t naivete, that he doesn’t know less about the world than she does, that it’s a conscious choice. that it’s the way he fights.
this is probably starting to sound like hippie-dippie liberal bullshit, but what keeps it from being that is what the protagonist does with this. she turns around and keeps fighting, but it’s like… it’s like… well, i don’t know what it’s like! i’ve never seen anything like it before. it has the rhythm of a martial arts fight, but it’s just her throwing all the things that are missing from her opponents’ lives at them. she fights them with love. she fights them with caring. but she still fights. because she needs to save her daughter. because nothing’s going to get in her way.
i’m actually struggling to put into words how i feel about this moment, and it’s just a tiny part of the movie? and it actually doesn’t even end up being the lynchpin of the movie after all, because there’s another reversal where her daughter almost gets her to let her go, and at first it seems like it’s the right thing to do, but she has to try one more time. she has to tell her that she matters to her, and why. she has to tell her that she loves her. and if she walks away from that, that’s her decision, but it’s not going to be because she didn’t fight for her.
love is kind, but it isn’t meek. love is mighty. love is resilient. love doesn’t go away when it isn’t convenient. love gives us the strength to fight. love can be how we fight. sometimes that means punching assholes in the face, sometimes that means telling someone something they don’t want to hear, sometimes that means just being there. what matters is that we never stop fighting.
i still don’t think i’m really bringing anything new to the table here, i still think it’s pretty unlikely that everything i’m saying hasn’t already been said better by others. the reason i still feel like it bears repeating is because this movie matters to me. i am not arrogant enough to think that some nobody writing a glowing review of this movie is going to make one iota of a difference in the grand scheme of things… but i think this movie would want me specifically, and you specifically to do it anyway. because no matter how much it might seem like nothing we say or do matters, it does matter. because the universe is infinite but it is not uncaring, and even if it were uncaring we can choose to care.
choose to care. i am literally begging you. there is very little else we have control of. it’s true that the world and its problems are bigger than us. we’re puny and we’re insignificant. but what we think, what we say, what we do matters. it all matters. all of it matters. everything matters. even if it only matters to one person, it matters.
i’m going to talk about math for a second, and i’m probably going to bungle this explanation. please know that my beautiful mathematician fiancx is shaking vir head at me for getting this wrong if so. and ve will kick my ass, but not in highly choreographed martial arts fights, more of the tying me to the bed and whaling on me with a cane kind of kicking my ass.
… see, the funny thing is that’s not actually entirely unrelated to the movie because there’s some super explicit bdsm stuff in it? BUT ANYWAY let’s not get sidetracked.
so, here’s my understanding. do you know what infinity plus one is? infinity. do you know what infinity plus two is? still infinity. do you know what infinity plus infinity is? STILL infinity. again, if i’m understanding this correctly. (from what i understand there are big infinities and small infinities but those are all ultimately still infinity? so they’re like the same but not the same? idk oh no my fiancx is getting the ballgag let’s move on.)
so, my point is this. yes, the universe is infinite. it’s probably the biggest infinity we can begin to comprehend.
but what if you, yes, you also contain an infinity? because as far as i know, the soul has never been measured, never been quantified, from what i understand it cannot be quantified. there is something, some unseen force, that makes you you, that makes me me, that makes us us.
i don’t know if this is making any sense, but what i’m getting at is this: i believe each and every one of us also contains an infinity. and if that’s true, the fact that the universe’s infinity is bigger than yours does not matter. an infinity is an infinity.
you matter as much as the universe.

My first diary
Manuela Zanni and André Pimentel
What if Bluebells, Jessie and Napoleon never had been in the Animal Farm?
Jessie and Bluebells were two dogs who used to live happily in their house, in the south of the United States. Your owner, Mrs Beth loved them very much, and gave them everything they wanted: a good place to live, good food, kindness, but not the only thing they most wanted: freedom. Dissatisfied, the dogs ran away to live by themselves, with no humans to bother them, when they ended up meeting two pigs: Napoleon and Snowball, that were in the same situation as them. Together they end up in the night without a place to sleep, and get in a play in a theater, where they stay wonderstruck with all that beautiful performance. Then they realize something, that would change their lives forever.
DAY 7/08/1916
Hi diary, my name is Bluebells and I am a dog, but not a normal dog, as you can see I can write and read, but this is not the main point. I just arrive in a farm, and to be honest I don’t know what I’m doing here, I was supposed to be an actor, I was on my way to this…But it was not always like this, let me contextualize this story for you
Many years ago I used to live in a simple house in the South of the United States. With me I had Jessie, who is also a dog and it’s with me since then. We had an owner: Mrs Beth. I would be unfair if I said that she didn't treat us well, of course she did. We had food anytime we wanted, a good place to sleep, pampering all the time, and anyone who saw this would envy my life. But there was one thing, and the most important one, missing. Me and my friend Jessie didn't have freedom. When we left it was always on a leash, which makes it very difficult to breathe, I got to say.
So, in conclusion, we decided to run away. It was difficult to keep in this life, it was not what I wanted, so we escaped. I don’t know how Mrs Beth is now, it has been 6 months since we ran away, but she is probably now with other dogs and cats to pamper and play with her, as we were used to.
When we were running out of the house and the wind was hitting my face I felt what I wanted to feel a long time ago. I can’t explain, but it was freedom, and the world was opening for me. At the time I wasn’t sure if that was the best decision for me, but now I know the answer for that.
After some time walking without any direction or idea where to go, I thought that the best thing to do at that moment was to stop and go to sleep somewhere. It had been a long and tough day for both of us, emotionally and physically. We decided to sleep in a park near there, because sleeping in the grass is way better than in the middle of the street.
The next day, I woke up with something smelling and sniffing in my face, which really scared me. I opened my eyes confused and when I woke up I came across two big and ugly pigs. How on Earth would I imagine that two pigs would be walking around a big city, that I don’t even know the name of, and smelling other animals' faces? At the exact moment I thought what was going on, I yelled to Jessie, who woke up even more scared than me. After 2 minutes of just us staring at those two pigs we created courage to ask: “Who are you?” Then they said they were walking around and thought we were dead, so they went to check on us. After he said that I realized that they seemed like good pigs, and were harmless. I introduced myself and Jessie, and said we were aimless and that we were in search of a good life. ( Actually I didn’t know what this good life was, but I knew that if I found it I would recognise it ).
The pigs, whose names were Napoleon and Snowball, introduced themselves and said that they were in the same  situation as us, which made me feel better, I got to say. We weren’t alone in this adventure. One thing that really impacted me and made me remember until nowadays is that their dream was to be a big leader, Napoleon and Snowball. I don’t know if together, but this was what both wanted.
Well, let’s go a little ahead, or I will never finish writing, and my paws are already hurting but let’s go. - After some time of the 4 of us talking we decided to stay together, so we could support ourselves in this dangerous world. But one important topic, we were starving, and neither of us had what to eat. But Napoleon was a little naughty and had the idea to steal. Steal from an old lady who was eating a hamburger. Of course I stayed with a little pity, but first: Hamburgers are my favorite food ( Mrs Beth used to give the rest of yours to us ), and second, we were so hungry that we could eat anything we saw. To distract the lady, Snowball pretended he was hurt, and started to cry in front of her. She saw it and put her hamburger on a bench to help the “poor pig”. Then, Napoleon got the food, Snowball got up from his acting and we ran away. Since then, I saw that they were very smart, and a little rascal when they wanted to.
Passing up 3 days of just sleeping in parks and feeding with this kind of stealing, I was over. I kept overthinking if it was a good idea to escape from Mrs Beth house, but Jessie used to convince me all the time that it was not a mistake. We were on our own starting to be a group, us 4, and it was very fun to be wandering around the city with them, they were really very funny. But there was one day that would change my life forever. It was raining cats and dogs, and we needed to find a place to stay at night. A place was opening and there was no security around so we got in. The place looked very fancy, with a good illumination and great pillars. We were kind of afraid of what could possibly happen, but we started hearing music and conversations, and the way Napoleon was curious, he decided to go in, and we followed him.
After entering, my eyes started shining a lot. I had never seen such a beautiful thing in my entire life. I asked Jessie, who had more knowledge than me about human life, and she said it was a theater, where there were actors, music and a lot of expression. I stayed amazed, and wanted to stay until the end of the performance. The scenes, the interpretations, all the music, everything. I think I finally had found that feeling that I was looking for: the feeling of happiness with contemplation and freedom. That gave me a huge freedom. I told myself that I would be in that stage one day, even if for once. My friends, seeing that the storm was over, wanted to get out, but I just couldn’t. It was even a little strange what I was feeling, but it gave me a comfort that I didn't have a long time ago.
So, before we left, I went to the director's office and knocked on the door. He didn’t seem very interested in what I was saying, but I wanted to know if I could participate in one of his performances. He asked me if I was already an actor, and I said no. This made me give up, but seconds before he closed the door I asked if I trained a lot, I could do a test on him in one week, to see if I had potential. He agreed, but probably just because he knew I wouldn't give up that easily.
This whole week I went to see theater performances, but just me. And on by on I was staying better at interpreting characters, even imitating Jessie’s personality, which made her very angry.
After this week I went to do the test, and I did a great job.The director said that he was shocked how a pig could act that way as I was doing, and I said: “ neether I know, sir”. Then he said something that made my heart jump: I could participate in one presentation in 3 days, it was simple and small, but a good chance to make me grow. That made me really happy, and after I knew about this I ran to tell Jessie, Napoleon and Snowball. But when I got to the park where we were staying, I was in shock: Napoleon got into a fight with a lot of dogs in the region, who were looking for him, and that we needed to get out of there immediately. I wasn’t getting exactly what was going to happen, but I said I couldn’t go because I had been accepted to perform and this could maybe in the future be something bigger, but they didn't care. They say that they were leaving, with or without me.
I think this was the saddest day of my life. Finally I had found my “freedom”, but I couldn’t stay alone in that city, I needed my friends, so I decided to leave with them. We had no direction, and I was feeling more lonely and lost than ever, when efter 2 days walking we got to a farm. With other animals, we decided to go in. Here is where I am now: Animal Farm. But there is one thing that I forgot to mention: here we cannot escape. After coming in, a man called Mr Jones “arrested us”, and now we are part of this Animal Farm. The only thing that we were looking for we lost, and got back to the same point, but worse.
Sorry… I needed to blurt out this with someone, and I know that you, diary, are not gonna tell anyone I suppose. Napoleon and Snowball became the leader of all the animals, and they seem to like it here. And Jessie is like me, but at least we had each other. I’ll keep writing here, I like it. Well, now I have to sleep, tomorrow is a long day again, bye bye.

Indie 5-0 with Cary Hoffman
Tumblr media
“I’m Killin’ ‘Em...A Comic’s Opera” is the new theatrical piece from composer and lyricist Cary Hoffman. This incredibly powerful opera was written for Cary’s friend, stand up comedian Bernie Travis, a victim of childhood sexual abuse. As a result of such abuse, his life was forever altered he ended up taking his own life. Listen and read more about this story here.
We got the opportunity to speak with Cary about this piece in this very special edition of Indie 5-0. So, without further ado, let’s dive in:
Your rock opera "I'm Killin' Em...A Comic's Opera" is about your late friend and comic Bernie Travis, who suffered sexual abuse as a child. If you are comfortable, what can you tell us about Bernie's life? To you, what is his lasting legacy?
Bernie’s life was filled with torturous dissonance and disappointments. He could be incredibly and brilliantly funny but only offstage when he was with his closest friends The moment he walked on stage it would disappear into a standard predictable comedy act...he could never trust who he really was...and failure was in his DNA...due to inappropriate love from his father. He tried to have a more normal life...getting married and having a daughter but his own horrible childhood never prepared him to be a dad....and ultimately led to estrangement from his wife and daughter. His lasting legacy is a political comedy album called the Pentagon Papers which he wrote..(he was always fighting against political and social injustices )..and a film called Dirty Mouth where he played his hero...Lenny Bruce. But because of his past he was always helping people he saw who were in some emotional need...He had amazing empathy for everyone except himself...  But the real tragedy was his distance from reality  which grew bigger and bigger as he grew older..so his distortions of life became his only reality.
Why this story and why now?
Why this story now...over 20 percent of all people have been sexually abused as children...and it's probably higher due to most people not reporting their abuse. If only the issue was more visible maybe people wouldn't be afraid to share their stories.  Who knows how many people who commit crimes against others...i.e., January 6 Rioters....and themselves and never fit in were sexually abused as children.
How does the music shape the story?
I needed a way to intensify the emotions and drama of Bernie’s story as only music can do...and the dissonance and angular rock music I wrote was a perfect parallel way to express his dark story. Also music helps to smooth out the bumps of tragedy as Opera composers have know for a hundred years. My opera is really just the interior thoughts of a man who was doomed by a horrendous childhood tragedy so having him sing his story makes it so much more intense and complex because of all the different kinds of music I used. With Democracy being threatened all over the world this is a life and death moment for mental health and for helping others.
Do you see this going to Broadway or any other live theatre?
I believe that my opera is at its heart...a theater piece...whether on Broadway or in a great performance space so that the theatrical inventions of imaginative staging will be an important component of the story...from the backdrop to multiple characters playing the people who were responsible for Bernie’s abuse.
What is the message you hope audiences get with "I'm Killin' Em...A Comic's Opera"?
CHILDHOOD TRAUMA IS FOREVER! It does not disappear as time goes on and a person has great success...or not...love can help...but it never goes away and the world has to accept this basic truth and confront this with education and self awareness. This hidden crime deserves  to have all the spotlights of the world shine on it so it can't hide anymore!
