ㅤThankfully, other than being an entomology nerd, Itachi was also a big brother and was currently dealing with something very similar, back at home - Sasuke also having reached this age when pre-teens start garnering a sense of more abstract thinking and start questioning a lot of things that their child self always took for granted. Rather than getting too worked up about it, then, what Itachi did was to keep his calm demeanor and respect his student's personal space; give him a moment to feel all the things and think all the things. Once the big sigh hit, likely signaling that Jak was available for a bit of shared introspection, Itachi tried again.

«There you are. Welcome back.»

ㅤDespite the slightly teasing words, the tone was gentle and the smile was firm on his lips. Just as he was about to ask if Jak would like to share his burden, though, another mood swing apparently hit and, this time, for the better. Tilting his head curiously, the Uchiha watched the centipede being sent back on its way home and, next thing he knew, his student was back on his feet [literally and metaphorically so] and ready to take on the world. Unable to hold back a little laugh of amusement once he understood what it was about, Itachi closed his book and got up as well.

«I thought we had agreed this would be your day off?»

So it wasn't that Itachi had an interest in bugs, it's that knowledge of them was a requirement for his position. It was a bit of a bummer, but still pretty cool either way. Jak would pop quiz him going forward. Gotta keep his teacher on his toes too.

Jak shook his head at the question, shifted a bit, and looked back down at the centipede.

Itachi was such an amazing shinobi...and it wasn't solely because of how strong he was. He was smart. Probably the smartest guy ever! Which was daunting to Jak. He wasn't the brightest kid when it came to academics. It was hard to focus on studying and a lot of the time he had to re-read the same paragraph about 5 times before he understood what he was reading.

It just seemed so hopeless. 

Could he ever hope to become a powerful ninja like Itachi? Or Mar...?

He was thinking so hard, his brows were scrunched together alongside an intense frown. He was far too focused on internally berating himself and thinking that maybe he wasn't cut out for all this stuff when he couldn't even commit to reading a simple book.

Jak's shoulders slumped in defeat and he sighed greatly with a mopey expression.

He lifted his wrist and turned the critter around to get a good look at it.

Maybe Jak wasn’t good in the classroom, but when it came to hands-on stuff, that’s where he really shined. So maybe he should get back to training and learn how to summon those crows! And maybe even those orange cats.

Finally, he released the centipede and it scurried off.

"Ah!" Jak turned to Itachi, making the first hand sign for the summoning jutsu. He stood up and grabbed at Itachi's sleeve, giving it a tug as he backed up. Jak pointed behind himself.

Time to get to it!
