It's not goodbye my only friend Yesterday started over again

Circa 2021... three years in and it looks like yesterday indeed! This piece is extra special to me because it marks my first investment in making Transformers fanart and is usually my pic to go when presenting my portfolio for fanzines/artbooks x'D

The flowers shown are Magnolia Star Wars, known to be one of the oldest and first plants to bloom, and so, probably dinosaurs saw (and ate) them!

I will share some gif processes here because I'm not used to do a lot this type of complex rendering and is cool af to see it step by step!

kinda mixed on these but for a uni project we had to “reboot” an older tv show of our choice, I picked beast wars bcus of Transformers Brainrot, here’s some of the predacon designs I made 🤖🦖

So after obsessing over Arachnis Prime and reading @sonicasura's bat Optimus idea I just was really, really digging it and was inspired to make my own AU similar to it

So basically in this AU both Optimus and Elita fall back into the cavern; Elita's power times out like in canon but Optimus manages to catch her as she's falling. The issue is all that does is put too much sudden weight and tension on his grappling hook causing it to pull out of the rock and send them both tumbling down. The explosion separates the two of them, sending Optimus even deeper in. While Elita becomes Blackarachnia as she does in canon, during and after her change she's looking for Optimus to see if he survived, eventually finding him in a terrible state. He'd run into the cavern's other denizens, massive vampiric and carnivorous bats. He managed to fight off and kill a few but not without serious damage, bordering on death.

In a bid to save him, but also for the selfish reason of not wanting to be a freak alone, she makes him a techno-organic like herself. From there, Optimus lives up to his name for the first little while, practicing with his new alt and eventually managing to fly out of the cavern to watch for any Autobot ships, believing Sentinal will surely come back with or at least send help since he didn't come back for them originally, eventually realizing that Blackarachnia is right, no one is coming.

Well, no Autobots at least. The two get picked up by the Decepticons, Optimus being very much not about the idea but following Blackarachnia almost blindly as he still sees Elita-1 in her and basically owes her his life.

From there it's kind of all over. For a good bit he kinda just follows her around like a puppy and follows her commands; after all initially the idea is for them to return to how they once were, but eventually, Optimus will realize that Blackarachnia is no longer his beloved friend and something will happen to cause him to finally turn on her and split off into his own thing, of what I'm not sure; honestly, it'll more than likely be a build-up of things instead of one big thing.

There's also the debate of how Optimus deals with the Decepticons and basically being one for a while. On the one hand, I like sonicasura's idea of him just being a victim of circumstance. He's not a Decepticon, or in this case, he's only a Decepticon in name, he's just a man who's trying to deal with his current situation the best he can while sticking to his morals and general worldview.

On the other hand, I like the idea of Optimus realizing the flaws and downright failings of Autobot society and becoming a Decepticon for real. He doesn't agree with their morals and what they do a lot of the time, but the ideals Megatron puts forth? He can get behind those, especially since he and Elita were failed by the system they followed so doggedly while Sentinal abandoned them (as far as he's aware) and potentially still gets 'rewarded' (given the rank of Prime and his own team; Optimus would not know he's delegated to bridge repair until later if at all)

More than likely he might fall into a third option of neither, where he abandons the Decepticons like Blackarachnia does but refuses to rejoin the Autobots because of the whole debacle, likely hiding away with the Dinobots on their island.

Also as you've likely noticed I haven't quite come up with Optimus' new name? I'm partial to Chiropteras, as Chiroptera is the order bats are from. I considered going with Optimus Primal since Blackarachnia is also from Beast Wars and a lot of people used/use Tarantulas for spider Optimus before Arachnus Prime was revealed, but my biggest thing is in TFA Prime isn't technically anything special, it's just a rank, so why would he still be Prime or even make it Primal? Unless he's giving himself the rank because he feels he deserves it/is bastardizing it for his own use. I could also potentially use the name of another bat transformer in the way that Tarantulas is the name of a Predacon from Beast Wars but none of them really fit? Cause there's Nightscream, Sonar, and Nyx (and technically Noctorro but he's a bat and a bull). I could use Nocturne or Nocturnus, too.

My beloved ape dad, munky queen, and comfort character.

Get past the "lol munky" jokes and you will find what is IMO one of the best designed characters in Optimus Primal. His iterations do differ (mainly in terms of the sass level he possesses), but the one constant is that he is a perfect ambassador of his beast mode: gentle, caring, and protective of his team and friends-sometimes to a fault-yet powerful and not afraid to smack a bitch if need be. Favorite Transformers character of all time, if you don't like him we can't be friends /hj

Favorite moment

You could put all scenes of Primal in the Beast Wars episode "Gorilla Warfare" here, but I'm specifically gonna pick the scene where Primal is going on a rampage through the Darksyde. Berserk Primal always lives rent-free in my head.

Idea for a story

I've given quite a bit of thought to an origin story for Optimus Primal, specifically for the original show. Decades later and we've never gotten canon info about his life before Megatron stole the Golden Disk, which baffles me.

To keep the story short, I imagine Optimus Primal's origin story being complimentary but opposing of Megatron's. While Megatron took the name for himself out of a power-hungry ego to be better than the Megatron of legend, Optimus Primal received his name upon activation due to his similar appearance to his namesake. However, he has a rough upbringing due to the pressure to be "perfect" like his namesake, despite not wanting anything to do with being a political leader or spiritual successor to Optimus Prime (hence pursuing a career in space exploration instead once he was older).

Unpopular opinion

I personally like Optimus Primal in Beast Machines for the most part, primarily from a psychological perspective.

Yes, he is snappy to his team, he's not as cheery or light-hearted as he was, but that's entirely because of the extreme negative situation he's faced with.

I always remember what Primal said to his fellow Maximals in episode 3: "Megatron decimated this planet because of me, you think I can bear losing any of you?!"

I bring this up because this is what signaled to me that Primal is not mentally doing well. Primal is blaming himself for Megatron's escape and his subsequent unleashing of the virus, blaming himself for the millions of sparks and future of Cybertron now on the line due to Megatron's actions, blaming himself for putting his teammates right back at square one but now with limited resources and numbers. Primal is putting a lot of unhealthy pressure on himself and it shows.

I just think it sucks that a lot of people don't seem to talk about this when it comes to his characterization. Most of what I see usually starts and ends with how preachy he is when that's only scratching the surface of his character IMO.

Favorite relationship

I will always stand by Primal, DInobot, and Megatron polycule, though only in an AU/what if scenario.

If referring to canon material though, I like Primal and Dinobot's relationship because of how sweet their friendship ends up being. Primal believes in Dinobot more than Dinobot seems to believe in himself, and Primal still supports him even during his worst moments.

Meanwhile, I find Primal and Megatron's dynamic fascinating to study, primarily because of how strongly linked their fates are with one another. They don't get along at all, yet their opposing characterizations and mannerisms ironically compliment each other well.

Favorite headcanon

He doesn't get many chances to do so, but Primal is a talented singer that knows how to play the guitar and piano (or whatever the Cybertronian equivalent of those instruments are.) I like to believe he's sung lullabies to Cheetor when the young bot can't sleep. Yes, this headcanon is based off Garry Chalk.

Favorite Autobot changes on a day to day basis but right now it's gotta be tfa prowl. First time I saw him I thought he was a punkass loser. By the last episode I was bawling my fucking eyes out. He was so sweet and I love how much he loved Earth. I genuinely feel like we didn't see enough of him back when he was a draft dodging (based), headstrong jerk bc it would have made every relapse he had hit even harder. Also I'm a little obsessed with his voice. Can't beat Jeff Bennett.

Favorite Decepticon has to be Blitzwing, also tfa. The second he opened his mouth I KNEW he had to be the closest thing transformers had to a Tumblr sexyman (i was right lmao). I adore him, we are both mentally ill and extremely funny about it 💖 We were absolutely ROBBED of the episode What a Tangled Web We Weave, i NEED to see his beef with blackarachnia beyond him dunking on her in the first episode. Tbh I wish we could see more of the tfa Decepticons all together in general, they are all so cringefail 💜🖤💜

I know I already did fave obscure character but I'm gonna do favorite neutral too bc when else am I gonna get the chance to talk about BEAST WARS DINOBOT, MY BELOVED 💖💖💖💖💖 I know he's not TECHNICALLY neutral but he should count the way he switches sides every five minutes. He's so fucking silly, he wants you to think he's a serious warrior sooooo bad but he is not, he's a grumpy shakespeare/history nerd with a sword collection and a vore fetish he does not bother to hide. He is a doofus who revels in any praise ever. And then he had to go and sacrifice himself. Rigged.

Fun fact: I watched beast wars right after tfa to forget the pain of prowl dying, immediately thought dinobot was a starscream knockoff, got attached, genuinely loved him, and then he died too. Because life is pain, apparently.

i do think my favorite two parts of the entire short

are the Angst Montage (where they just rapid-fire homage the tragedies of G1 Optimus, Beast Wars Dinobot, Prime Cliffjumper, Armada Starscream, and Animated Prowl in the span of like five seconds)

and how it ends with the Micheal Bay stuff (the most high-profile and unique but also most controversial part of the franchise) slowly transforming into the G1 stuff (the classic, beloved, and oldest part of the franchise), and then transforming again into the Earthspark stuff (the newest* part of the franchise where we explore a world where Megatron gets to be happy and healthy)

so i just finished beast machines and i have a lot of thoughts and feelings, specifically about rattrap

ok so i will admit i don't know much about rattrap before beast wars. but im looking at this scene of him hugging botanica at the end of beast machines and the implications. the implications of his character in this series is fucking astounding. like i know i'm definitely reading too much into it but like. He starts doing more tinkering and tech-minded stuff because rhinox is fucking kill., so he becomes the team nerd. dinobot is gone and theres one scene where he tells nightscream "You'll understand when you're older" when nightscream is watching black arachnia be like, hyperfocused on silverbolt, and i can't help but feel like that's a callback to his reaction to dinobot's death. Like, he personally understand what insane shit love can drive someone to do (and yes i consider dark glass canon why do you ask).

And then the whole thing where he works with megatron, that's probably one of my favorite episodes of beast machines because its so stylistically gorgeous, but also like. His best friend(rhinox) and love interest(dinobot) are dead, he's one of the last people of his species alive, he's woken up expecting to be home and away from the hostile environment of the beast wars, His autonomy has been all but stripped from him, and he feels useless and angry and hurt. And then botanica comes around and he treats her much the same way he treated dinobot, and they grow like, hostile-ly dependent on each other, like seeing each other as strong enough to withstand verbal abuse and leaning into that role because it feels good to have something direct to be angry about, and it feels good to EXPRESS that anger, and they can both take it so they don't really worry about hurting feelings or whatever. and then she almost fucking DIES, basically right after they kiss in the middle of an argument, and neither of them know how to handle the kiss but then she's fucking DYING and he barely manages to save her life by doing something exceedingly risky, and then like, independent of her and the fledgling romantic situation, he has to try and make this split second decision about saving all the sparks in the giant head ship thing, and he fucks up and he literally says WHAT DID I DO? and covers his face with his hands and it just gets BLOWN THE FUCK OVER. AND THEN WE'RE IN THE FUCKING AFTERMATH. AND HES LIKE. WHERES BOTANICA. and she SHOWS THE FUCK UP and THEY HUG AND HE LIKE. NUZZLES HER SHOULDER AND IM JUST. BABY BOY. MY LITTLE RAT MAN. MY BELOVED BABY RAT AAAAAAAAAA

like i know i'm reading way too much into him and his character but god fucking damn. im happy he got a decently happy ending. like i would have preferred it be with dinobot but im happy he got a decent ending at all

I started to learn Norwegian when I was 17 and I've been there three times now. I will shamefully admit that Hetalia was my gateway to my Scandinavian passion hut I'm also a huge Viking nerd. (still crying over the fact the Viking boat museum in Oslo closed the YEAR I WENT TO NORWAY *angry grumble* it won't open back until 2026!!!!) It's a gorgeous country and I love how old stuff is. I've visited the Nidaros Cathedral each time I went because I can't get enough of all the medieval scupltures.

I'm a bit of a history nerd, my friend often tells me I know more about their country than they do xD The Kalmar Union is a huge special interests of mine!!

Hii!!! Yup! :D I study Scandinavia in college! Well, more focused on the languages now in the 3rd semester

I chose Norwegian to study, but there are others who chose Swedish or Danish. I think Norwegian is somewhat a mixture of the two, and also generally just like the way it sounds the most out of the 3. I want to move to Norway one day!

Originally wanted to study Finnish, but it wasn't an option on my major. Still haven't given up on it though, maybe one day
