This winter has been brutal for mushers in the lower 48 this season. Beargrease postponed with no new date announced. I am supposed to be volunteering at a sprint race near me in a week or so and there is almost no snow on the ground. Weather the week of Christmas was too hot to run dogs.

Before and after: I spent a long, very cold, night with John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon volunteers in Grand Marais, Minnesota as we waited for the teams to come in across Devil Track Lake. In the process, I went from knowing virtually nothing about dogsled racing to chatting freely about booties, handlers, and chutes.
Read all about it in the Duluth News Tribune.

Not The Expected News
This was supposed to be an exciting post about all the interesting twists and turns that are coming in my next book.  BUT – Mother Nature had other ideas and for a few days I did not write a thing because I got to learn up close and personal once more what the flu is all about.  I relearned how explosive a stomach can be that really wants to get rid of what’s in it, repeatedly and yes, dry heaves are real.  What muscles have the power to produce such velocity?  Don’t know.  And once that round was over, it switched to the opposite end.  I can now claim with certainty that my GI tract is clean stem to stern.  I am better now and should be writing again except I am now distracted by the Beargrease Sled Dog Race which ends today and THEN I’ll be putting words on paper.
So, I’ll leave you with this, next post will be back to books and writing.  I promise.
Oh, and, “Shela,” book 2 in the Ocean Cowboys Series might still be on sale, depends when you see this.  Just in case, here are links.

41way to say it with flowers. For men...
41way to say it with flowers. For men…
It’s almost that time again, boys! No, I’m not talking about Superbowl LVII, set Sunday, Feb. 12, in Glendale, Arizona; the 65th annual Daytona 500, coming Sunday, Feb. 19, live from Daytona Speedway; the gravity-defying Winter X Games, scheduled Jan. 27-29 in Aspen, Colorado; nor even the John Beargrease Marathon, which as everyone knows is the grueling 400-mile race for the finish line held the…

Bella the sled dog visits The Lift
Marcia Eiynck a musher and descendant of John Beargrease stopped by The Lift to talk about all things Beargrease ahead of the 39th running of the sled dog marathon. She brought along with her, a beautiful sled dog named Bella. “Bella came to me not as a sled but as a princess of the manor. […]

Beargrease #3
Up ahead, we saw four Border Patrol SUV’s parked on either side of Minnesota Highway 61, lights flashing, officers standing nearby. We were headed into Grand Portage, only six miles from the Canadian border, to watch sled dog teams competing in the Beargrease Marathon come into the turnaround checkpoint.
We expected to be waved to a stop but the officers didn’t look up when we approached so we…

John Beargrease Indian Cemetery
Tumblr media
Most don’t know the legend of John Beargrease and all he did for his surrounding community. Growing up a hunter, fisher, and trapper in Beaver Bay, Minnesota was not easy, but their family made it work and soon became well known for their mail service. Since the train back then only made it as far as Agate Bay, and other channels of communication were limited, John and his brothers began to pick up the mail and deliver it up the North Shore while making their trips to hunt and trap.
Keeping loved ones and family members connected through his service, John continued delivering mail for over twenty years. During snowy months, his sled dogs pulled the mail-laden sled, and then took to the Lake during the warmer months for an easier commute. He made his fastest dogsled trip from Agate Bay to Grand Marais will a load of about 700 pounds of mail in just under 28 hours. Because of his reliable and successful mail delivery, the population along the north shore grew and the economy stabilized.
John made his last mail delivery on April 26th, 1899, but continued his trading business for many more years to come. One day in 1910, John went out in a storm to rescue a mail carrier whose boat was caught in the waves off Tamarack Point, near Grand Portage. This selfless act did not go unnoticed, but he soon caught pneumonia and eventually died in his hometown of Beaver Bay. His grave can be seen there today at the Indian Cemetery.
To get there: the cemetery is located 24 miles from Two Harbors. From highway 61, turn left onto Old Town Road and follow the curve to the right. On the left, there will be a log with a faded sign reading “Indian Burial Grounds”.
