Wraith tugged the mask from his nose, tucking it beneath his chin. The air stung his damp thinned skin with an unfamiliar chill, the weight of the fabric ghosting over his face as his mouth twitched. For a moment his eyes aimed downwards as his tongue flicked to dampen the spaces behind the gaps in his lips. With a tight jaw, he looked up to meet the young womans wide gaze.

His chest rattled as he cleared his throat and bluntly spoke, "Do I scare you?"

Teary odd colored eyes only searched his gaze.

"No."

The tension he carried in his shoulders eased, his eyebrows raising as he sat back. "Then you have nothing to worry about."

Everybody's favorite scar boy has a heart-to-heart with Shauna.

I figure they both have a pretty close sibling relationship which started soon after Shauna joined the gang and began training. Unlike Roman, Shauna managed to gain the rank by besting another Hyena and replacing them. When she starts training the others have already been in training and since she was quite litterally a leg behind the others her confidence would waver fast. The only person she can even slightly rely on is her partner Vanya who is naturally gruff and cold towards the replacement. This insecurity only amplifies as she meets the golden children Roman and Maddox who she doesn't interact with other than seeing them during meals or passing them in the halls. Once or twice she speaks to Maddox during training who has always been a bit loud but kind but Roman is an terrifying looming figure. She sees him in training and the closest thing to interaction is exchanging a word or two or a single glance. He's older than her, he's already tall and isn't done growing, and the only thing you can make out about him is his eyes but the few times she's heard his voice its been dry and quick.

So when she's having a breakdown outside of the sparring room the last person she expects is Amell's one-man army to sit down beside her and ask her what happened. Before she can stop herself it all floods out, she feels like an outcast and she doesn't know what she's doing there. Demetria has told her so many times she is there for a reason but she doesn't know what that is and she's scared. She knows there isn't room for being soft but she isn't sure if its more scary to have to block away that fear or give into it and end up dead. She isn't sure if she's already dead but uncertainty is horrifying.

When she finally stops ranting Roman reaches out emotionally. He has been nothing but a statue at the very top of a pyramid. Carved and made to be inhuman like some sort of greek sculpture. And for the first time, he looks human, he's a young man not just a pair of eyes and a quiet voice. His skin is imperfect with humanity and experience that curves around a mouth that quirks up and down with emotion. She sees Roman as Roman for the first time and when he pulls his mask back up after a few seconds, he stays human in her eyes.

After all that Shauna solidifes herself as a sister figure in the lives of both Maddox and Roman and eventually a very close friend to Vanya. Everyone in the group has scars but Shauna and Roman probably have the most obvious ones and both can bond in the embarrassment and insecurity they have surrounding them. Shauna becomes much more confident in herself and her leg in part due to her support system. Roman unfortunately does not but I like to think Shauna boosts his comfort in wearing his scars around his fellow Hyenas

These are the fellas who help protect and maintain The Overcast from the inside and are the few allowed to control patrols. Each has a group of Corpral's that they lead.

The Hyena pairings were each assigned to one company member to learn and gain experience in leadership. When the hyena's return or lead patrols they take control of the corresponding group they had been trained with.

What is your favorite memory about a book?

Oh, so many I can pick from... hard to choose a favorite, but here's one of the first happy ones that came to mind. This isn't about the content of a book, but about an interaction related to one.

When I was in eighth grade (thirteen years old, for those non-Americans out there), I loved Rick Riordan's books. At the time, the Heroes of Olympus series was being released, and I'd just gotten a copy of the newest book - I think Mark of Athena? I forget which one it was. I still enjoy Riordan's writing, though I prefer his Norse and Egyptian books over the Greek/Roman crossover that was Heroes of Olympus.

I finished reading my copy of the book decently quickly, and a friend of mine one grade above me (ninth grade/freshman year, first year of high school) asked if he could borrow it. I said yes, wrote my name inside, and made him promise to take care of it.

A few weeks later, I went to see the high school's production of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. My friend was in the ensemble, and the director had the ensemble doing various things in the background of some of the scenes while staying on stage.

It almost felt like I was onstage too, since something I owned was. Alas, I didn't make my debut onstage until the next year since they only allowed high schoolers to audition.

(Sebuah renungan, untukmu yang lelah di jalan Dakwah)

Ustadz, dulu ana merasa semangat dalam dakwah. Tapi belakangan rasanya semakin hambar. Ukhuwah makin kering. Bahkan ana melihat ternyata para syabab banyak pula yang aneh-aneh.” Begitu keluh kesah seorang daris kepada musrifnya di suatu malam.

Sang musrif hanya terdiam, mencoba terus menggali semua kecamuk dalam diri daris. “Lalu, apa yang ingin …antum lakukan setelah merasakan semua itu?” sahut sang musrif setelah sesaat termenung.

“Ana ingin berhenti saja, keluar dari Halaqoh ini. Ana kecewa dengan perilaku beberapa syabab yang justru tidak islami. Juga dengan organisasi dakwah yang ana geluti, kaku dan sering mematikan potensi anggota-anggotanya. Bila begini terus, ana mendingan sendiri saja…” jawab daris itu.

Sang musrif termenung kembali. Tidak tampak raut terkejut dari roman wajahnya. Sorot matanya tetap terlihat tenang, seakan jawaban itu memang sudah diketahuinya sejak awal.

“Akhi, bila suatu kali antum naik sebuah kapal mengarungi lautan luas. Kapal itu ternyata sudah amat bobrok. Layarnya banyak berlubang, kayunya banyak yang keropos bahkan kabinnya bau kotoran manusia. Lalu, apa yang akan antum lakukan untuk tetap sampai pada tujuan?” tanya sang musrif dengan kiasan bermakna dalam.

Sang daris terdiam berpikir. Tak kuasa hatinya mendapat umpan balik sedemikian tajam melalui kiasan yang amat tepat.

“Apakah antum memilih untuk terjun ke laut dan berenang sampai tujuan?” sang musrif mencoba memberi opsi.

“Bila antum terjun ke laut, sesaat antum akan merasa senang. Bebas dari bau kotoran manusia, merasakan kesegaran air laut, atau bebas bermain dengan ikan lumba-lumba. Tapi itu hanya sesaat. Berapa kekuatan antum untuk berenang hingga tujuan? Bagaimana bila ikan hiu datang? Darimana antum mendapat makan dan minum? Bila malam datang, bagaimana antum mengatasi hawa dingin?” serentetan pertanyaan dihamparkan di hadapan sang mad’u.

Tak ayal, sang daris menangis tersedu. Tak kuasa rasa hatinya menahan kegundahan sedemikian. Kekecewaannya kadung memuncak, namun sang musrif yang dihormatinya justru tidak memberi jalan keluar yang sesuai dengan keinginannya.

“Akhi, apakah antum masih merasa bahwa jalan dakwah adalah jalan yang paling utama menuju ridho Allah?” Pertanyaan menohok ini menghujam jiwa sang daris . Ia hanya mengangguk.

“Bagaimana bila ternyata mobil yang antum kendarai dalam menempuh jalan itu temyata mogok? Antum akan berjalan kaki meninggalkan mobil itu tergeletak di jalan, atau mencoba memperbaikinya?” tanya sang musrif lagi.

Tiba-tiba ia mengangkat tangannya, “Cukup ustadz, cukup. Ana sadar. Maafkan ana. Ana akan tetap istiqamah. Ana berdakwah bukan untuk mendapat medali kehormatan. Atau agar setiap kata-kata ana diperhatikan…”

“Biarlah yang lain dengan urusan pribadi masing-masing. Ana akan tetap berjalan dalam dakwah ini. Dan hanya Allah saja yang akan membahagiakan ana kelak dengan janji-janji-Nya. Biarlah segala kepedihan yang ana rasakan jadi pelebur dosa-dosa ana”, sang daris berazzam di hadapan musrif yang semakin dihormatinya.

Sang daris tersenyum. “Akhi, jama’ah ini adalah jama’ah manusia. Mereka adalah kumpulan insan yang punya banyak kelemahan. Tapi di balik kelemahan itu, masih amat banyak kebaikan yang mereka miliki. Mereka adalah pribadi-pribadi yang menyambut seruan Allah untuk berdakwah. Dengan begitu, mereka sedang berproses menjadi manusia terbaik pilihan Allah.”

“Bila ada satu dua kelemahan dan kesalahan mereka, janganlah hal itu mendominasi perasaan antum. Sebagaimana Allah ta’ala menghapus dosa manusia dengan amal baik mereka, hapuslah kesalahan mereka di mata antum dengan kebaikan-kebaikan mereka terhadap dakwah selama ini. Karena di mata Allah, belum tentu antum lebih baik dari mereka.”

“Futur, mundur, kecewa atau bahkan berpaling menjadi lawan bukanlah jalan yang masuk akal. Apabila setiap ketidak-sepakatan selalu disikapi dengan jalan itu, maka kapankah dakwah ini dapat berjalan dengan baik?” sambungnya panjang lebar.

“Kita bukan sekedar pengamat yang hanya bisa berkomentar. Atau hanya pandai menuding-nuding sebuah kesalahan. Kalau hanya itu, orang kafirpun bisa melakukannya. Tapi kita adalah da’i. Kita adalah khalifah. Kitalah yang diserahi amanat oleh Allah untuk membenahi masalah-masalah di muka bumi. Bukan hanya mengeksposnya, yang bisa jadi justru semakin memperuncing masalah.”

“Jangan sampai, kita seperti menyiram bensin ke sebuah bara api. Bara yang tadinya kecil tak bernilai, bisa menjelma menjadi nyala api yang membakar apa saja. Termasuk kita sendiri!”

Sang daris termenung merenungi setiap kalimat musrifnya. Azzamnya memang kembali menguat. Namun ada satu hal tetap bergelayut dihatinya.

“Tapi bagaimana ana bisa memperbaiki organisasi dakwah dengan kapasitas ana yang lemah ini?” sebuah pertanyaan konstruktif akhirnya muncul juga.

“Siapa bilang kapasitas antum lemah? Apakah Allah mewahyukan begitu kepada antum? Semua manusia punya kapasitas yang berbeda. Namun tidak ada yang bisa menilai, bahwa yang satu lebih baik dari yang lain!” sahut sang musrif.

“Bekerjalah dengan ikhlas. Berilah taushiah dalam kebenaran, kesabaran dan kasih sayang kepada semua syabab yang terlibat dalam organisasi itu. Karena peringatan selalu berguna bagi orang beriman. Bila ada sebuah isyu atau gosip, tutuplah telinga antum dan bertaubatlah. Singkirkan segala ghil (dengki, benci, iri hati) antum terhadap saudara antum sendiri. Dengan itulah, Bilal yang mantan budak hina menemui kemuliaannya.”

Suasana dialog itu mulai mencair. Semakin lama, pembicaraan melebar dengan akrabnya. Tak terasa, kokok ayam jantan memecah suasana. Sang daris bergegas mengambil wudhu untuk qiyamullail malam itu. Sang musrif sibuk membangunkan beberapa darisnya yang lain dari asyik tidurnya.

Malam itu, sang daris menyadari kekhilafannya. Ia bertekad untuk tetap berputar bersama jama’ah dalam mengarungi jalan dakwah. Pencerahan diperolehnya. Demikian juga yang diharapkan dari Antum/antunna yang membaca tulisan ini.. Insya Allah kita tetap istiqamah di jalan dakwah ini.
