YES!!!! i have so many personal favs for shartzel fics (im assuming thats what u meant and i am so sorry if not) BUT i will try to keep it to maybe like 5-10 favs bc my bookmarks folder for them has like 50+ fucking fics in there its a little insane..... - Truesilver by mylordshesacactus: i think everyone in the shadowzel part of the fandom has read this one honestly but it like. rewired my brain entirely when i first read it. shadowzel raising a kid was something ive never thought abt before, but then i read this fic and all i could think about was them having a domestic married life.......... - though i burn, how could i fall? by Jazzfordshire: THIS FIC GAVE ME THE ABSOLUTE WORST (BEST) BRAINROT EVER... the way the author writes their gradual relationship and their characters in general just AUGH. it itched my brain in the best way possible i love it - And I want to share it all with you. by Rosethornwolf: this fic is still in progress, but it makes me tear up so so so bad. i love soft shadowzel i love that shit so much and i love how the author writes them in general.... please give their other fics a read as well, theyre lovely - Fast Times At Baldur's Gate by Calchexxis: if you want like pure shadowzel fluff, this is THE fic for u. this fucking fic had made me giggling and kicking my legs while reading it cause of how tooth-rotting the fluff is!!!!! sometimes all you need in life is baby high school sweethearts shadowzel... - Truce by Looktotheedges: im sure everyone's read this one as well BUT FUCK ME I LOVE THIS FIC. the author does such a superb job at not only writing shadowzel but also their dynamic with the rest of the party members. i adoreee the found family moments so much and hold it so close to my heart... - sharpens like an image / sharpens like a knife by yeahitshowed: this one is a littleeee angsty. ive waited so very long for a "what did orin do to lae'zel?" fic that also mentions shadowzel and then this author wrote it and i instantly was in shambles. like when i was done reading this fic, all i could think abt were the ways lae’zel would see orin in shadowheart from now on. how that fear she held would always linger Somewhere in the back of her mind and it destroyed me :'D (this will make sense when after reading the fic i promise) - pressing a flower by Isolatedwriting: ending this with another also angsty one but like straight up hurt no comfort angst :) to quote the summary: "durge fails a saving throw" and i have never been the same since actually..................

for Comment on a WIP square i went with: Wildfire by Neostone138, a single chapter WIP that has some demon trickster shane and a whole lot of intrigue! while only one chapter i am captivated by the characterization and the ending was my favorite

for Newest Fic in a Chosen Tag: Tasty Snack by Impala_Chick this was a fic i didn't expect to like so much but god it was so funny. that crack tag really delivered! i'm personally weirdly picky with outsider POV, so i was surprised with how much i liked it in this fic! it's a testament to how good the writing is tho im not surprised bc i do love Impala_Chick's works 🫶🏽 also the ryan thirst is real in this fic as it literally should be

for Alternate Universe: estranged producer by Anonymous which was super hot and very fun! sugar baby ryan and daddy shane and you bet your ass ryan was sugaring! i hope this author continues to share their lovely ideas with us because this was BRILLIANT

for the square Trifecta: Kudos Comment, & Bookmark: Horizon Lines by WhoopsOK, listen. guys listen. this fic is SO FUCKING GOOD🙏🏽 it's full of absolutely delicious tension in the most shane madej repression way and then it DELIVERS on it so good. it's absolutely 🔥🔥🔥 AND it's demonic! shane & angel! ryan. what more could u want! i cannot recommend this fic enough

Re-read A Fave Fic And Comment (Again): I told my demons about you (they told me to get therapy) by Ren_Saxon, WAAAA i love love love this fic! the whole collection is filled with amazing fics but i love this one bc it just... so chaotic! i love down bad ryan and he's losing it over it and GOOD FOR HIM. it's just so funny ren ilysm ur so good at writing baby 🫶🏽

For A Fic With Less Comments Than Kudos I chose: Please Stay by Fluffycorn_njst which is a beautiful drabble about friends with benefits turned lovers shyan! absolutely loved the desperation u could feel from both of them even in so few words. kudos!

For Comment on a fic posted at least 3 years ago I went with : Call Me Yours by deanwinchesterissaved, a hot little fic with possessive shane and takes place during t5b! what's there not to love

For Keyboard Smash with a Lot of Emojis: bisexual panic by Future_Boy. I love these one shot type stories for when I'm at work during a slow day, this one was very cute and had some interesting shane internal monologue which I found very fun!

For Spooky or Mystical Vibes: mirror on the wall by tasty_little_snack, OOO what a heart wrenching little fic. the ending killed me, i loved it!

Fic with Rare Pair: Gonna Lose It by Anotherlostblogger, CURLY FIC CURLY FIC CURLY FIC ‼️‼️‼️ guys i love curly/ryan so much and there's SO LITTLE of it imma cry. this fic is so good it's a college au with curly/shane/ryan and ITS SO HOT AND SWEET AND DELICIOUS! gotta be one of my favs on this list don't tell 🤭

It’s a cruel summer for all. first of all i'm extremely attached to this fic bc it introduced me to maisie peters, which led to one of the best concert experiences of my life!! but other than that, this is just so beautifully written, so detailed, and an all-around incredible fic. everything by this author is incredible too!! it's got the perfect balance of angst vs fluff and just summer vibes, which is prob the perfect thing to read right now - anyway, DEF read if you haven't already!!

That was until James Potter came around, becoming party leader of his own party, the Leftists. Sirius would probably hate him, if they weren't such good friends. Regulus does not share this problem. Remus Lupin literally just needed a job, and got thrown into the mess of secrets, games and an upcoming parliamentary crisis. With an election around the corner, things are bound to go awry. MCD WARNING but so worth it. like genuinely. it's a painful fic but there's also a good dose of fluff and i enjoyed every single second of reading despite it being politics and.. well, i'm from america so you can probably guess that it was very strange to actually be attached to these characters while they were politicians😭 this one's also so well written and - there are fics where you can just tell that the person cares so deeply about the topic they're writing about, and this is one of them!!! i love finding fanfics where authors are just incredibly passionate about the subject/au OH and it has a taylor swift title. so like. yk it's already gonna be good. (this is also actually one of my favorite songs ever so i was soo excited to read)

MCD warning. but like, the pain is written so well, and it's so heartbreaking, and i literally remember staring at the ceiling after reading this (finishing at like 2 in the morning) and just not being able to think of anything but that ending, and like, you KNOW that you're going to be in pain bc it's a titanic au, but like, GOD it's so good. i genuinely don't even have the words i'm still depressed bc of it (but in a good way)

The Mystery of the Pears by sonwar

In the cave, Regulus doesn’t beg for it to stop. He begs not be left behind, alone. Perhaps this is why, when Kreacher gives one last look over his shoulder and sees terrible, pale hands reaching for his master, he appears in a flash at Regulus’ side, clutches him by the elbow, and Apparates them both out of the cave, directly disobeying his master’s last order. canonverse fic!! and such a lovely au. the romance between them is just so natural, and yet there's still the war going on - but really, it's just so well written, despite all the angst of the war, imo it's just such a feel-good fic. love this one so much.

Only the Brave by Solmussa

A fic about two idiots falling in love (x2 because there's wolfstar, too) during a war, and the sacrifices they'll have to make to survive it. andddd this one's the big one. this one's the one i choose to accept as canon. like. GUYS. THIS ONE'S SO FUCKING GOOD if you haven't already and you're a jegulus fan, you just HAVE to read it like genuinely. the plot is so well-thought out, all of the interludes give these other characters their own stories too, and the angst!!! but also the badassery!!! i can't even explain it but if you want a canonverse war au where jegulus survives and they all win, then, like, this is the one. it's so perfect. prob my fav jegulus fic of all time.

Last true mouthpiece by @miwism (G, 1/1, 2k) - in which will and hawkins are one and the same. this fic opened up my eyes to a take on will-has-powers that i had never before considered but i have not stopped thinking about since i read it. i need more of eldritch will byers in this fandom & everybody should read this fic

don't leave me here alone by @strangeswift (NR, 1/1, 3.4k) - ok this one is EVIL. this one is GOOD. essentially: mike tries to convince will to run away with him to keep will safe from vecna, but will might not be the one who needs protecting... i am a sucker for some s5-speculative angst and this fic DEFINITELY delivers!

all I know is pouring rain (and everything has changed) by @willelfanpage (T, 1/1, 3.2k) - a character study of will, particularly in relation to life moments he has in the rain. ugh, will byers my love will byers my light... this fic is so gorgeous and so beautifully done, i think everyone should check it out! i love the canon moments mixed in with non-canon ones.

take me to the lakes by @afterglowsssss (T, 1/1, 2.1k) - FANTASY BYLER EVERYONE CHEERED!!! prince will x knight mike is something that can legitimately be so personal, you guys. they have so much love and affection for one another that i'm literally throwing up (/pos). cleradin's been getting a lot of love lately and i am enjoying it but u guys need to hype this one UPPPP!!

come to me again (in the cold, cold night) by @perexcri (M, 3/3, 16k) - i've been on a vampire kick lately and this is the fic that started it for me. featuring: estranged byler, vampires, dystopia, angst, reunions, and CONSISTENTLY BANGER prose. would not expect any less from a perexcri fic. this one is a little creepy and dark and is absolutely gripping the entire way through.

there will come a poet (whose weapon is his word) by @fizzseed (T, 1/1, 3.2k) - fics that include mike as a writer are always some of my favs. and when he writes for WILL??? ahhhh my heart!! he's just so sweet and dedicated and this fic is just SUCH a gem. i think byler's relationship with each other when it comes to D&D (separate from cleradin AUs) is so interesting and i'm so glad this fic explored it!!

Ohhhh LMAO oh god. Any time anyone rb's a fic of mine on here and goes ham in the tags or as an addition (Lian and Hana this is targeted at you, lovingly ♡) it automatically becomes a fav I will re-read again and giggle at.

I also had someone on Erlkönig recently pick out bits of their fav lines from my most recent chapter and add comments, which I thought was v sweet 💕 a lot of Erlkönig and Obsiquy comments make me happy, tbh. Anything is sweet in my eyes!

📚 — Is there a fanfic or fanfic writer you'd recommend?

In terms of fics, Like Lark Notes From the Sky by ARevenantDreamingOfRoses (locked unless logged in) is an absolute banger. It follows an MC who has the ghost of KoD attached to them, guiding them throughout the game; MC is implied to be Fae too.) A stunning, STUNNING piece of work so far. 4 chapters!

you are proof of my existence by ToshihikoRin is also lovely. It covers heavier topics in it, but the author balances this with light-hearted moments too. 27 chapters!

Atramentum by Chronophage is also another really beautiful piece of work. The author writes in a manner I find engaging and easy to follow. It doesn't have Grim in it, as a warning. 36 chapters!

In terms of writers, @welshoot , @hanafubukki , @curekibouka-writing , @llondonfog , @ / raven-at-the-writing-desk, @da-birb-writes-sometimes , and @vera-deville are a few of my immediate top of head who ik write fanfics. But honestly, there are tons of fantastic writers in any of the twst tags that I've come across :)

(these aren’t all that recent bc most of the ones I have enjoyed recently are the ones @alexturne mentioned in her post, so I’ll also just put some fics that I think deserve some praise 😊).

1. sometime in the future by @blacktrickle

In a world quite similar to this one, Miles Kane is an international supermodel an d Alex Turner is the rockstar who has broken his heart one too many times. Now, two years after their most vicious break up, Alex is asking for one more shot, but this time, Miles won’t make it easy.

(8/10 chaps, 109k)

This fic immediately comes to mind. I’m not even gonna bother playing it cool - I think about this fic a lot. Honestly one of the best milex fics I have ever read and it’s not even over yet (but I know I’ll love it just as much or probably even more by the time it ends anyway). It is so extremely well written it could literally be a novel. Blacktrickle never fails to impress me with each chapter - the way she links together different parts of the stories and the details of this world that she has created. I could literally go on about it forever, but I won’t. I have never recommended so many people a single fic and, like always, I will be checking my bookmarks on ao3 for an update every day until the end (and then I will be patiently waiting for anything else blacktrickle comes up with).

2. never get tired of dancing (with you) by salutdamour on ao3/ @depressedraisin on tumblr.

This fic is just so heart-wrenchingly beautiful. I teared up already within the first few paragraphs of the first chapter. The characterisations of both Miles and Alex are amazing, and their love is so special: so free but all-encompassing. Although I wasn’t alive at the time, I feel like the author encapsulated the zeitgeist of the 70s really well - the whole vibe and atmosphere of this fic just feels like Bowie was around haha. I don’t know whether this fic will be continued as it hasn’t been updated in a while, but I sure hope it will!

3. under these lights you look beautiful by @alexturne

Miles got completely lost in his voice. There was a faraway quality to it, like he belonged somewhere else entirely, but somehow had decided to grace them with his presence and Miles felt blessed to be near him if even for a short while. The subtle elegance hidden in his slender figure, the mannerisms of his fingers wrapped around the corners of his notebook. His words were spoken softly, quietly, but without any hesitation or faltering.

Alex is an elusive poet, who has a way with words and Miles is a bartender, who is completely mesmerized.

Oh, how I wish I could read this fic for the first time again. It is one of my favourite milex fics ever. The first time I read it, I barely put my phone down until I finished it, it is that good. The author is also one of my favs, so ofc this fic and all of her other fics are amazing. The autumn vibes are lovely, humbug alex is just exquisite, their romance is so so pure and innocent (until it isn’t lol), and the pacing of it is perfect. Never has a kiss on the cheek excited me so much before 🤣! I will be rereading this many times to come haha.

"I like it, your music, it's... what's the word, unadulterated, got a genuine feel to it, 's good."

Alex smiles back and runs a hand through his hair, ruffling it into his desired style. He looks like he's about to say something, but he holds himself back as Miles seems as though he's about to continue.

"You're good, on stage I mean," Miles takes another drag, sucking another sharp tug into his lung, "You look like you're... like you're somewhere else."

A smirk breaks across Alex's expression, his eyes move from Miles's, to the ground, then back to Miles's again.

"There's nowhere to hide up there y'know," he tugs at the front of his jacket, a deep blue Adidas windbreaker, further shielding himself from the crisp January air, his gaze settles a bit as he sighs, "So I just hide behind the noise."

OR

A fast forming friendship between Alex and Miles takes a turn after a range of sleepless nights, shared cigarettes, loud music and a bar fight.

Man, oh, man. With merely 3 chapters this fic already has me in a chokehold. I just love the vibes of this fic so much and I am a sucker for a bit of slow burn friends to lovers. The pacing so far is perfect and the author has really encaptured how I imagine how quickly Miles and Alex bonded when they first met. The song references are so cleverly woven in, like Miles smoking organic cigarettes; I love each one so much. I just know that by the time this fic ends it will be one of my holy grails. I can’t wait for the next chapter!

5. Can’t Help Myself by @yellowloid

Busy with work as Miles has been, finding time to hang out with each other over the past few weeks has been difficult, if not impossible. what sports do you play/have you played? netball, softball, cricket, bit of tag rugby, loads of rounders, street hockey was my fav out fo em i was pretty ok at defending (all of these r from when i was still in p.e. classes in high school idk if that counts but its what i got)

favorite subject in school? hmm. probably either art or english. though i only rly got an appreciation for english when i did this additional gifted kid project thingy and rather than just literally tell us an interpretation of a text to memorise for an exam the teachers gave us a bunch of analytical lenses to choose from to analyse a text and i was like "yo wait interpreting meanings from the text is kinda fun when you havent got bitches in your ear telling you 'ok so this is exactly what the author meant and you just need to memorise that and write it in the test'"

dream job? i honestly have no idea. i wouldve said author once but i enjoy doing it for fun, i dont think id be able to make smth publishable and if i somehow did i feel like itd ruin it. if i had some kind of like repetetive but simple task and i just had to do it over and over, maybe listen to music or a podcast or smth in one ear i feel like so long as i earnt a decent amount id be cool with it. i am a simple little guy my dreams amount to 'eh id like to do some cool stuff :]'

Lol I'm the opposite of that last ask 🤣 I actually had all my bookmarks private untill I learned from this blog that readers like seeing authors' bookmarks. Now mine are all public.

Why do readers like seeing author bookmark? It has never crossed my mind to look through someone's bookmarks.

I can’t speak for all readers but personally I like looking through an authors bookmarks bc if their fics are that good then maybe they’ve booked some similarly good stuff. It’s like your friend handing you a rec list

but to answer your questions, ill do it in 2 parts: one for fic recs and the other for fic promos.

theres a couple different ways i look for fics, and im sure both of these are the most common, but the first is using ao3's filter system. i can pare down any particular thing im looking for in a fic with the filter system ao3 runs on, and the tag wranglers (bless them) have made sure that even the vaguely worded tags end up where they need to be under the larger umbrella tag its associated with. you can also peruse the bookmarks of authors on ao3 in their profile and filter those fics down to specific fandoms or pairings or even timeframes it was written!

the second is a combination of using friends recommendations- publically or in private servers- and fic recs on tumblr, usually thru the ship tag (if im following the tag, and if the author chose to promote their fic on tumblr, or a fic rec blog promotes it as some fandoms do)

it also depends on how large the fandom is when you come into it, and what specifically you are looking for, but if you have friends in that fandom who keep bookmarks of their fav fics or know of ones youd enjoy, id recommend going to them if the tag system isnt providing quite what you're after, as id trust a friend over anything else (word of mouth literally is the best promo)

there are also sometimes fic rec blogs, who's entire modus operandi is promoting works at large, so following a few of those (if there are any) can help bring new content to your door as well

as for promoting your own work, you really kind of have the world before you. make a link post on tumblr with a similar tagline to the summary and tag it accordingly. share the link in discord with friends or in fandom spaces. share the link on twitter and tag it so it gets seen. ao3 is not a social media website, so as long as you are the most recent post in the tag, youll always be at the top. theres no algorithms there like there are on other socmed platforms, so really the choice is up to you how and where you want to promote it! reblog the link as many times as you want! its up to you!

and youre not entirely wrong that discussion of fanworks doesn't take place on tumblr anymore, but it really depends on the fandom youre in. i follow several authors and fic rec blogs for one fandom who do regular fic promos of other writers works and gush about them, but in the way that youll see a blurb in the jacket cover of a book. its really just to keep the content coming back to the top here, and helps bring to the surface fics that didnt get a lot of readers in the first run, perhaps bc its an older work or a lesser known pairing.

discussion about fandom works themselves has turned private namely for the sake of reducing drama and hurt feelings in public spaces, and i dont blame them. ive been in ficbook clubs on private servers that were some of the best times ive ever had bc we were allowed to talk freely about an authors work without airing our opinions out for all the world to see, and frankly i much prefer that style of discussion over public ones, but thats me and i cant speak for everyone.

theres also just been a steady shift away from author engagement on socmed bc of how easy it is for them to get hit by negativity there. the culture just isnt the same as it used to be for fic writers as it was in the last decade. hell, in the last year alone, youd be hard pressed to find an author who hasnt experienced some kind of harassment over the course of their career on socmed, if we're being honest. my honest advice to you is: if youre following an author you like, and u want to know more about how they use their creative process, ask them! they may not all answer these days, but it doesnt hurt to try! just be polite, thats all anyone can hope for.

Oh! Oh! Fav fic you read this year?

okay, so. hear me out.

i know it should be a she-ra fic. i know that. you know that. we all know that. but i am so incredibly picky about what i will or will not consume, and so most of the fics i read were ones i had already read, last year, disqualifying them from this ask, or super obvious ones that i didn't even need to bookmark, because the idea of losing them is ludicrous/i'm subscribed to the author.

but uh. well. right around january i ran out of she-ra fics. i went through every published fic and i plum ran out. but i needed more?

and there was, you know, a lot of overlap. between what authors wrote or bookmarked, and. certain other ships. and so i may have gone a little off the rails and uh...

it's supergirl, okay? it's a supergirl fic. no i've never watched supergirl. yes i will still die on every hill i've staked out.

and like, yes, she-ra as a show is superior in nearly every respect, but. it is, by necessity and design, lacking in two things that i go absolutely ham for:

irish & conlangs.

unfortunately, it turns out these are not sentiments shared with the majority of fic writers. there's a lot of scoirish and "khap zhao rip" (it should be zhaoivodh khap rip, bc you need to add the -iv suffix to make it a verb, and then conjugate it, and kryptahnuio is VSO. like irish.) but that's fine, i'm fine, i don't even go here. if your idea of an irishman is the lucky charms mascot or you don't want to spend an hour learning a fake language, it has no bearing on the quality of your story. it's simply a lifestyle i cannot personally fathom, going ham for these things as i do.

but i digress.

my fav fic this year is a very good story called astor that was well-researched re: irish shit, emotionally compelling, and (most importantly to me) understood lena. i have extremely strong opinions on lena, which should surprise no one. i will say that it's pretty heavy, and there is some animal death, but it's an honest examination of lex and lena's relationship, and it gave me some emotions, i'm ngl.

What’s a story I’d love to see you write? I don’t want to say this… because it hurts me… but I just KNOW you’d write brilliant angst. Some of my fav pieces of yours are pained beginnings with happy endings. That fight with Tsukki after a bad day at work. The pieces I mentioned above (nightmare pieces and fighting pieces and angsty home life ha.. ha.ha.ha.). That Oikawa one where the reader wakes up in bed without him and thinks he left. You write these gorgeous atmospheres and descriptive, visceral feelings, and if you chose to use it for evil…. You could get evil shit done. You’re SO powerful. So I want to read it… but also…. I don’t. I’d love to see you write ABO like you mentioned a while back or just see you explore a cutesy soulmate AU or something. I think you’d be really good at writing an AU where you hear what the other person’s listening too. I feel like you’d be so good at making me feel something for someone who was in another city. (think this would be cute with Tsukki cos he’s headphones boy, OR terushima because I like the dynamic of someone flirty, who clearly cares about looks, falling for someone he can’t see) ANYWAY….

Have any of your stories helped me through a hard time? Of course. Your self-harm piece came at a time I needed it. Iwaizumi’s in particular saved my life. But also your Tendou dealing with S/O parents who fight… came right when I needed it. Also starting college… was hard.. And reading and rereading your fluff really pulled me through it.

Do I genuinely like your blog, it’s aesthetic or posts? It’s overall feel? It’s content? Yes. The aesthetic is, ngl, a wee bit basic. But I kinda love that. And the feel? It feels like home.
