Daryl was my favourite character for years, but daryl is boring in the spinoff without carol now idk. Like beyond the incongruous relationships with random characters, I just don't see it anymore. Whatever drew me to him isn't there anymore.

Maybe it's the 'leading man' bullshit. Someone (the showrunner) who doesn't understand the character or how to be a good writer is moulding him all wrong. It's ok for a character like daryl to be a lead. He didn't need to change his character.

And why for all that is good in this world, will they not let carol be a leading woman?? Melissa won't change carol. So, maybe the showrunner(?) can't stretch his brain to think of how to work her as a lead. But that's bullshit.

A mini comic you drew a while ago shows Iris in jail with Perry talking to him through glass. Perry has a smile and is guessing what they charged him on in a joking manner, also based on the wording of Perry and Iris conversation it isn't the first time he has been arrested.

So I was wondering if there was a pacific event that did lead him to getting arrested and i'm so curious what Perry's reaction was to seeing or being told his boyfriend was arrested.

Infodump under cut- (Cw for incarceration, false imprisonment, and a VERY brief mention of child abuse at the end- spoiler: Iris rocks an abusers shit HARD and goes to prison for it but jokes on them bc Perry and Iris then adopt his daughter and give her the loving parents she deserves 💙💜)

Kid Iris probably got sent to Juvie a few times but never stayed long because his rich daddy would either bail him out or prevent him from being emitted entirely- same story for his teen years- as far as WHAT lands him in juvie/jail in his youth, the general answer is “doing whatever the fuck he wants and having no concern over the consequences” wheeze

Vandalism, fist-fights, petty theft, grand theft auto, trespassing, breaking and entering- that sort of thing- his parents will always forgive him, so Iris has VERY little forethought when it comes to what actions may lead to getting him in legal trouble ☠️

HOWEVER, once Iris turned 18 and was legally an adult, his dad had more trouble bailing him out every time, so he had to serve a few short sentences here and there, but just sort of got used to the pattern of “do whatever the fuck I want, serve jail time if the cops catch me, go back to doing whatever the fuck I want” 😂😂

Perry is never PLEASED to hear that Iris has been arrested again, but he’s also never surprised. usually Perry will either just sigh and reschedule thier upcoming dates, or if Iris has pissed him off recently, break up w him for the hundredth time only to inevitably take him back once Iris is released and stands outside his window w a boombox in the pouring rain or some other equally dramatic romantic gesture 😂

(Sidenote: I think another reason (anti) Cosmo starts to have trouble keeping Iris out of the hands of the law is that HE HIMSELF starts to get into hot water for stuff like tax fraud and embezzlement wheeze)

Unfortunately my friend you have activated my ANGST TRAP CARD w this one- check out below the cut for a huge infodump abt Iris’ Jailtime; specifically the worst ‘breakup’ he and Perry EVER had, that took them years to reconcile from! 🥰

His LONGEST sentence (the one where Perry LOST TRACK of him for multiple years) happened after Iris and Perry had a fight about Perry being “too boring” and “always trying to smooth down his edges” so they kind of sort of decide to go on a break, and Iris is too mad to even give his boyfriend a kiss goodbye (a decision he would come to regret for his ENTIRE LIFE).

Iris drags Sammy Sweetsparkle on an INSANE party binge in Tijuana or something- at some point losing track of Sammy, but deciding he’s having too much fun to stop now…. Only to end up taking the fall for a stranger in a HUGE drug bust of some kind, and getting thrown into a prison in MEXICO with NO SPANISH FLUENCY and no way to contact his friends and family back home ☠️☠️

Perry spends YEARS trying to find his boyfriend, losing weight, barley sleeping, and just generally making himself SICK with worry to the point that Timmy and his parents had to BEG HIM to just move on with his life, bc they couldn’t stand to see him wither away like that.

Despite having been dating thier son for multiple years, Perry actually didn’t have a very close relationship with Iris’s parents at the time, so even though at first he was constantly calling them for updates, by the time AC and AW actually FOUND thier son years later, they’re weren’t sure if Perry’s number was correct anymore, so when Wanda called Perry to excitedly tell him that they had FINALLY found Iris, unfortunately it’s TIMMY that happens to answer the phone.

Perry is staying with his brother for a short time to get back on his feet after finally giving up on finding his boyfriend and starting to apply for teaching jobs (something he got a college degree for but took a few years to pursue bc dating mid-20s Iris was a full time fuckin job tbh). Timmy is so glad that his brother is finally doing better, and, though secretly relived to hear Iris isn’t DEAD like Perry had been assuming, Timmy makes a hard (maaaaybe wrong as hell of him) decision… he tells Wanda she has the wrong number, and to never call again. 🙃

Lemme know if yall wanna hear about thier eventual reunion! Trust me, this peice makes it look WAY less traumatic and messy than it was 😬☠️ Iris basically does EVERYTHING WRONG HE POSSIBLY COULD HAVE to delay thier eventual reconciliation 😔

Iris serves one more long sentence AFTER he and Perry make up and start dating again, but the reason is actually a noble one this time, and iris turns himself in willingly to prove to Perry that he’s not a killer, and he IS trying to be better (Iris found out one of Perry’s students had a horrifically abusive father and beat him within an inch of his life 💙 they later adopted said student)

I completely agree with your post completely! And trust me Charles is my second fave driver so I’m always in the trenches when he does bad after a race cause everyone turns and says he’s shit but isn’t every driver allowed to express their frustrations after a race? That’s why Mexico got tainted for me bc I as much as I appreciate carlos, people making a fuss about a 5 sec clip, (which Charles eventually called out everyone that was creating drama bc of it) people took it out of context which immediately created chaos. Just like Landos clip interview this past Sunday which is the reason where in this shithole. People just need to learn to have human decency and empathy. We do know any of these drivers personally to speculate on them or any of their relationships around them. Also for Lando it’s so clear that in the interview he was referring to the red flag and not drivers talent. People just refuse to have any media literacy and just go with whatever is trending.

what we won't do is wax poetic and expect him to still be that unconfident driver; people are so used to seeing him like that, that now he's flourished and was (in some way) championship contending after being in a car that was so shit for so long, it's making them speak like they've got scarce braincells.

I’m enjoying your break down on Hobie’s character and your dedication to making sure he’s understood as being an incredible black character. He’s something so different to media and he deserves to have the depth of his character respected and acknowledged. That being said what’s your take on the way people are attributing AAVE to his character in fics? To me it’s just laziness, personally

Oh it’s definitely laziness. But I could also contribute this to ignorance.

I’m from Mexico so, English is not my first language. At school I learned American English all of elementary school and from middle school to high school I was taught British English.

I mostly consumed American media, but I was also obsessed with Harry Potter and Doctor Who. So I’ve always been exposed to both English variations and sometimes mix them when I’m either talking or writing up without even realising it (with my accent leaning more towards American).

But I’m not going to lie to you. I love languages, I like linguistics, and spend an awful lot of time noticing little details in the way people talk. And because I love accents I dedicate time to analysing accents as well as vernacular.

I think the turning point to me, personally, was when I noticed how between white Americans and African Americans there’s a difference in accent, whether is not the case between white and black people in England —or at least not that I am able to pick up through my Hispanic ears—. I think it’s curious, and there probably is an explanation as to why, that you can hear Americans talk and immediately know the color of their skin.

One time rewatching Doctor Who as background noise while doing chores around my house I noticed Mickey and Martha (both black characters) sounded exactly the same as the white characters. I knew it was Mickey and Martha because I know their voices but this is when I noticed there’s no difference in accent between them (other than regional accent). Whereas in America you have regional accent AND white and black accents (not talking about other accents here bcs it’s not the point).

Now focused on Hobie…Comic Hobie is American, hes black and he’s from New York. Granted. But let’s be real, the vast majority of the Hobie fanfics out there are written with Movie Hobie in mind. ATSV Hobie is British, specifically from London (I mean technically he’s from the city Old York, but judging by Daniel Kaluuya’s voice acting, he has cockney accent (London). And i think in ATSV’s Hobie this is particularly important because of the way he showcases being a punk. Not that Comic Hobie is less of a punk, but Movie Punk was clearly inspired by the movements origin in England. And the fact that hes black (and also from the late 70’s) only gives more punch to his ideology. Repression looks different depending on your ethnicity.

I think by stripping Movie Hobie from his original vernacular is stripping a big part of Hobie’s identity. He’s British. He hates the monarchy and the government but he likes being British, as shown in the watch he makes for Gwen. Both the watch and the box have the Union Flag on it.

He likes being British. Plus I think, a lot of the charisma in the character is shown through the way he talks. What he says and HOW he says it, and he uses a lot of English and rhyme slang. And the fact that Miles (being the viewer’s surrogate through the story) doesn’t understand what Hobie says most of the time, is yet another layer to the mystery that is Hobie. That same mystery that draws you in to the character and makes you think: “I want to know more about this guy”

I could attribute giving Hobie AAVE could be a case of lazy writing, but I can also attribute that to ignorance. I would expect the latter to be less of a case in native English speakers. But to non-English speakers it would be either laziness or a lack of proper knowledge. Also because people have proved time and time again to be ignorant in things that would seem insanely obvious to all someone else.

And maybe it’s a me thing. I take my writing seriously, and like to deeply research before writing. I do admit I barely proof read fanfics, is a bad habit I have, and sometimes typos or American spelling escape me. But I try to really stick to the character’s personality. And a big part of personality is expressed in the way we talk. So I’d say it’s important to know who you’re writing about, to properly portray they speech patterns since through talking is one of the main ways in which we show who we are to the world.

tw: fictional sa, human trafficking, euthanasia, suicide mention

i wanted to prove a point on how sexual assault doesn't automatically mean this character is good, or their actions are justified. so i wrote mr riley as an example. when he stumbles on a human trafficking ring, while in Mexico, he deems it a waste of resources, time and effort to make the abused function normally again. these people, he knows, are much too traumatised to ever properly function normally in society ever again, and he thinks it would be greatly unnecessary cruelty to extend their lives/agonies--so he just locks them in the room and then gases them all. it's a mercy kill.

this is made deeper when he goes and says, yes, I took them out of their miseries, they deserve rest. he thinks of death not as something horrible, but a salvation. he thinks to live, so broken, their abuse commercialized, shared, and being jacked off to--is utter agony. to extend their pain and force them into a society which will undoubtedly be very against their mere existence makes the action seem justified, at least in his eyes.

it gets a bit more angsty when mr riley is also then Depicted to be also, a victim of sexual abuse, from his (unsurprisingly!!!) father -- but instead of being normal and getting therapy No, he's like, "Well, I think, if someone killed me, it would have been much better than having to live and adapt to a society which is against me." so when he Kills like everyone in the ring--the traffickers, and the victims, cosplaying as Death itself; he is showing a subversive side of his character, which is him. being Too logical that he ends up actually insane.

i always thought he was really sort of a mercy killer, pro euthanasia, eugenics guy. my first concept of him was actually killing his own son because simon expressed suicidal feelings. and instead of being a Normal father he goes, yeah, okay no worries. i will end your life for you, if you are having trouble ending it yourself. Like he is genuinely insane for that, i think.

he thinks of death as this sweet hope, a promise, a salvation, as a mercy. the bestowal of a quick and painless death to him is an act of kindness--this May also be influenced of his being a butcher, and thinking animal ethics=human ethics. if he has no remorse in slaughtering a cow who is too weak to move, because that is the best for the cow, he also has no remorse in slaughtering people who can't get out of bed. like. he's really That kind of person. in the extreme sense.

so yes I do think he's Really fucked up in the head. i hate seeing the physical abuse fics of him bc to me it's..very overdone, and i would love to see more variety in his General Abuse/Fucked-Upness/Mental Issues in fanfiction portraying a relationship between him and simon (and how this also consequently affects His family).

also additionally im spiralling so bad into my own personal lore for mr riley's childhood but like i have this near and dear hc is that his mother was lobotomised, which severely fucked him up when he was a child as he was quite close with his mother. which is why he thinks death is a mercy, to put out someone's suffering, instead of making them wholly inhuman.
