request: i just discovered your blog! It came up in the stuff Tumblr thinks I might like! Finnick seeing the broadcasts of the reader and Peeta. The rescue scene where they reunite. But reader wasn't tortured with Finnick, like lPeeta was with katniss. Sad and the reader having to get used to life again. Finnick almsot crying bc she jumps at loud noises, flinches. And at first she can't handle being touched. At all. Like they hold hands after a week.

a week ago I saw you on the tv. you weren't in your mother's dress getting reaped, you weren't fighting for your life in the arena. you were perfectly put together as you begged me to stop something you would die for.

I sat silently in the dining hall as people raged and threw insults at the seemingly disgusting capitol-loving traitors but I sat there knowing that you were being tortured. you are going through hell and there is nothing I can do about it.

I was in my pure white room as I rubbed my dry eyes to the new lighting, blurred vision, and ringing ears making out nothing until I hear

"They found her"

They found her? what, is she dead? did they find a body? did the capitol realize they didn't need her anymore and strung her up as a warning to others? caught and killed. know your place.

of course, dead or alive I fell out of bed and followed who I found out to be katniss, pure white walls and pure white tiles are all my eyes see until we stopped at a room and katniss turns to me.

"look, she's been through hell. all of them have been..I- fuck, peeta hates me. just, keep your distance" she warns before walking off and I can't help but linger on the words keep your distance... she's been out of my reach for god knows how long and you want me to sit across from her watching my words? fuck no.

I open the door, adrenalin running high as step in and look up to see her

but she doesn't see me

she knows who I am I know that. but, her eyes, she doesn't...feel right around me...like I'm a stranger

I'm already feeling like tears are running down my face and I haven't even said hi yet

"Y/n" the words choke out as I stumble a few steps towards her, she flinches slightly and my heart shatters.

"Hi, finnick" her voice is hoarse, scared. she brings her knees up to her chest as she takes her busted lip into her mouth, rather sucking the blood of her wound than speaking to me

maybe katniss was right I think, grabbing a chair and sliding it over to her, taking a seat I grab the blanket of the bed and whisper "I'm so sorry" as tears pick and poke my glassy eyes

"me too"

She's out of the hospital and I go to bed with her by my side, to wake up with it being empty.

shes been sleeping on the bathroom floor lately, the first time I found her there I thought she died.

she shakes and jumps when a door closes and doesn't let me touch her, even to console her when she's woken up from a nightmare. I feel tears run down my face when she lets me grab onto her hand for the first time in weeks.

so, when I tell you I cried. I cried as she cupped my face and brought her lips towards mine, soft as ever as she lays her head on my chest and whispers,

did anyone ask for this? No. No they did not. But I must get this out of my system sooo. Shout out to @cgetbrmj as always for providing me with some of these headcanons y’all were starving out here. I have turned to shitty wattpad fics help us all

-Peeta, before the hijacking, regressed to like 5-6 ish? He was pretty playful, and he loved people. Post hijacking’s a different story, bc he now regresses around 1-3? 3 being the very oldest. He does not like people whatsoever, and will not talk to anyone he doesn’t trust.

-the kind of activities he likes to do are like sit on a caregivers lap and do a puzzle or draw. Sometimes if he’s on the older side he likes to play kitchen with Katniss.

-SUCH a cuddle bug omg. He’d be so shy about it too, but just constantly wanting to be in contact with like one person, preferably two.

-Adding onto that, he’s such a crybaby as well. Probably just bc he’s so little, but he’s constantly whimpering and crying

-the other Littles get kinda annoyed with him sometimes, because he wants to play but they can’t really play the same games they do with Peeta, usually. Just because they’re constantly being reminded, “Now, Peeta is a lot littler then you guys, so you have to be gentle, okay?”

-Peeta having nightmares and waking up small and panicked, (it has become a thing where when he goes to bed little, he sleeps in the same bed as his caregivers, I’ll go into his caregivers more in a sec)

-after he has an episode, his caregivers always asking him if he wants to drop down, it’s really a mixed bag how he responds to this, sometimes he says no and drops down into babyspace anyway.

-ANYWAY his caregivers. Annie and Finnick. They were kind of just babysitters before, and slowly started to realize that they were more then just babysitters, and trying to talk about that with Peeta was a bit of a nightmare lmao

-Peeta Will do literally anything Katniss asks him to. She is like his big sister, very influential, and in more then one case it’s got them in not so great situations.

-(one time Katniss convinced Peeta to climb a tree and he couldn’t get back down. They had to call Finnick, she got in a ton of trouble for that)

-Peeta literally hates conflict and anyone getting even remotely irritated or annoyed at him. One time Haymitch was annoyed at Katniss, accidentally raised his voice at Peeta for putting his hand in his mouth. He started crying almost immediately

-almost everyone has different nicknames for the baby. I could go into heavy detail.

y'all can u fucking imagine the intense grief that finnick likely felt when he realized in the 75th games that katniss and peeta were actually in love with each other? the way the realization of their situation must have dawned on him? bc it's one thing to pretend to be in love and be targeted because it's not believable, but another entirely to truly be in love and be targeted anyway (to be targeted because of it).

finnick knows exactly how the capitol functions. he knows that the two of them have no choice but to be in love. but finnick also knows that loving things and people as a victor is cruelty at its best and torture at its worst. he knows the fear that comes with being in love and the exploitation one suffers because of it. so he watches two people (who love another victor like he does) who have been subjected to the same torture, the same story, the same systemic evil as he has, love each other because of it AND in spite of it. who are younger than him but are following in familiar footsteps. who suffer for and because of each other.

imagine the way grief settles over him at the realization that they love each other and he knows it will never be enough for snow. that the cycle continues. the way he realizes that it's all true and that somehow, that's a worse fate.

sorry, this is SUCH a specific ass question (and SO not a criticism of your work i love it!!!) but why do you think both Annie and Finnick would have volunteered? I know 4 is a career district, but I thought that it wasn't until graduating the academy that the tribute-to-be would volunteer - which in turn added to the careers' lethality in general. surely, if someone from the academy volunteered every year, the fear of being actually chosen in the reaping would be way less effective? I had always assumed that the academy was less an established and open school but more under the (official) radar but still known 'workshop' - and that there might not have been a 'graduate' willing to go every year. I think its a really interesting angle to go with that at 14, Finnick put himself in the arena so to speak, rather than an unlucky child who made the best out of a bad situation of being reaped because of his looks and could then never escape fully etc and then Annie?? who seemed frightened in the arena to begin with? hiding not hunting? did she bite off more than she could chew?? when did the game become too real?? what happened if two graduates wanted to volunteer at the same time?? much to chew on, it's not that deep, sorry, but I just love having a wee discussion xoxo

nooo it's an AMAZING question and also like, i love nothing more than talking about the INSANE thoughts i have about thg as well as the EVEN MORE INSANE thoughts i have while writing my fanfics so i am SO HAPPY to discuss!!!

so the reason i think they both volunteered is honestly bc i think like... it makes it even more interesting?? so obviously i have reasons for doing what i did in the fanfic and i also just have some general thoughts about 4 as a career district so i'll try to answer my general thinking first and then explain why i did what i did in my story

so -- generally i just think 4 being a career district is SUPER interesting given the winners that we have being finnick, annie, and mags. because katniss tells us in the first book that 1, 2, and 4 are the career districts but i think it's clear from the jump that 4 is kind of the dark horse in that lineup -- because even in book 1, she focuses WAY more on the tributes from 1 and 2 as the "careers" that she's the most intimidated by and the most threatening to her -- we don't really get all that much about district 4 in book 1 at all, so it kind of piques your interest -- because if 4 is *as much* of a career district as 1 and 2, why don't we get anything about those tributes like we do on the level of marvel/glimmer/cato/clove?? we DON'T!

and then ofc we get book 2 and the first person from 4 we meet is finnick, and at first he SEEMS like he's just another capitol pet -- but the more we get to know him, the more we realize he ISN'T, he's actually probably one of the biggest rebels we have in the entire series. in a way, he's kind of the centerpiece to the whole thing (and he shows up at like, basically the exact midpoint of the series) (i'm thinking, just for example, of the fact that finnick and annie parallel katniss and peeta in so many ways, the way that finnick ends the story by dying but his child lives on meaning the story ends with a child from a fatherless home just as it began, the way finnick is the one to point out katniss' genuine love for peeta, the way finnick is the one that creates "real or not real" by suggesting that it's "what annie does," -- i could go on. but he's genuinely one of the most central characters of the whole series and his introduction sets in motion basically the entire back half of the narrative)

so that's all to say that, i DO think 4 is a career district (bc the text establishes it) but i also think we're sort of meant to understand that it's DIFFERENT -- but it’s up to you in what way you imagine it to be different beyond what we're told in the text (basically that bc their industry is fishing/procuring food, they just have a natural tendency to be like, well fed and fit, which means training for the games is probably a pretty easy thing to do, and they can all swim/handle weapons (similarly to how we see johanna being able to wield an axe -- the industry of the district has a large effect on its people))

SO. kind of how i imagine it in my head, is that while 4 *is* a career district, the idea of winning being an honor is a bit different than it would be in 1 or 2. so when i was brainstorming, basically my thought is like, let's say they do have some kind of training academy (i agree with you that it would probably be less formal than what i wrote it to be, but that's just what i did for that story haha) but my thinking was what if it was kind of like ... a last chance kind of place? as in, it's not a competitive honor like it would be in 1 or 2, but like, if, for example, you're poor or an orphan or your parents need to get rid of you, they send you "away" to train for the games as a way of kind of controlling you. kind of like an extension of the tesserae system that we see enacted in all the districts. because four has enough resources (food-wise) that people probably aren't signing up for tesserae in the same way they would be in twelve, the sort of proxy for it that i imagine would be training for the games. if you win, you get money and glory. if you don't, well, you were probably going to die or have a terrible life anyway, so what's the loss?

because yeah, it IS weird that finnick won at fourteen and annie won despite being "mad" if they have some sort of formal training. but what if the reason they were pushed to volunteer is because they were the best of whatever crop of people that four had that year? (is this making any sense??) like, they were the best because although four might have "careers" they aren't really there because they WANT the glory of winning, but because they have no other choice than to try? (and also on the topic of annie not really fighting -- we actually don't really know that. we only know that she runs off "after" the partner gets beheaded, but we don't know when that was in the games. i kind of imagine it was like, halfway through or something, so she could've been holding it together/fighting fine for the first half but that moment was what tipped her over the edge. just some food for thought.)

so for the purposes of my story, i tried to figure out backstories of both finnick and annie that would've tracked for them being kind of "sent away" to school -- i was kind of thinking of the trope of being sent away to boarding school or some kind of military school that you see often in teen shows -- so in the story i wrote, finnick is this sort of "naughty" kid that gets by on charm and looks and his parents, in their attempt to keep him out of trouble, send him to train for the games as a way to kind of whip him into shape. and then my backstory for annie was that her mother died and her father didn't really want her around, so she put herself into the school as a way to get out of a bad situation. so for both of them, it was a *choice* -- but it wasn't really THEIR choice, it was more like, this was their best option in a world where they had pretty terrible options available to them. so that's how i landed where i did for the fic.

anyway all of that is just like, purely from my head!! i don't think there's much textual evidence to support any reading any which way, but it was one of my impulses when writing the story to try to find a way to fit all of their backstories together in a way that aligned with the very few lines we do get in the books about them -- so i was like, how do i make them career volunteers but ALSO make them make sense as the characters we meet in catching fire and mockingjay? and that was what i endeavored to do!!

hi… i cannot for the life of me find this fanfiction. but katniss leaves peeta when he proposes, then moves to LA. he follows her there six months later but sees her walking home with Cinna in the middle of the night and thinks she’s moved on. After a year without him, she realizes she loves him, and calls him and messages him for 3-4 years until she has to come home for Prim’s wedding, and she sits next to this weird girl on the plane ride home, but sees that Peeta is at the airport to pick up that girl (Glimmer), bc that’s his new gf. It’s also Christmas time. And Katniss sort of sneaks into the bakery after hours to steal Peeta’s old paint so she can teach her mom to paint. And her mom knits or crochets something like a very long scarf the whole fic, saying it’s a table runner. And then Katniss decides to move back to town to take care of their mom so Prim can move out. She and Peeta make up after Glimmer breaks up with him. I remember at one point they were drinking beers in Finnick’s basement or something, and Prim walked in saying that Katniss was going to move back home, and Peeta was like “Is that true?” or whatever. And things started piecing back together from there.

Everlark In-Panem Canon Divergent A/U.

District 13.

An interesting couple of weeks have passed since Peeta woke from a weeks-long coma. The doctors kept him in the hospital for most of that time, running scans, drawing blood, and doing tests to assess what sort of damage was done to his mind and body. Between Capitol torture and his more recently-acquired injury, a hard knock to his head on the floor when soldiers stopped him from choking me the night of his rescue, there is much to watch out for.

His aggressiveness seems over, other than some irritability, and frankly I can't blame him. I don't spend much of my day with him to know, so what I learn is gleaned in pieces. Considering everything he's been through, he's not doing too bad. I just don't know what to say to him now.

With Peeta safe and out of immediate danger, needing a distraction from my thoughts, I've fallen back into the scheduled life of a soldier in training. Directions are printed on our arms every morning here. Wake up, have breakfast, train, rest, lunch, afternoon class, afternoon training, etc. In between, I try not to think about the death and destruction unleashed around us. The mental and physical acrobatics leave me with little time on my hands, which is exactly what I need right now. Spare time is a bad thing when you're trying your best to keep your sanity.

Evenings are reserved for visiting Peeta. Others come to see him too. Johanna, Annie and Finnick, Prim, Haymitch, my mother. Even Gale. Oh, and Delly Cartwright. I think she's the one who told him about his family. She lost hers in the bombing as well. I'm glad I didn't have to tell him myself.

Life in Thirteen, while relatively safe since the night of the air raids, has fallen into drudgery. Grey walls, grey uniforms, grey food, grey moods. But tonight, we underground moles have something to break up the monotony. Finnick and Annie are getting married. I sit in the crowded cafeteria with my mother and Prim, watching the happy couple recite vows to respect, love, and cherish each other for the rest of their lives.

In the corner of the room, there's a designated celebration area. A woman from back home managed to save her family fiddle from the bombing, so there's to be dancing after the ceremony is over. The crowning jewel amid the sparse decorations a place like Thirteen could offer is a beautiful cake Peeta decorated for Finnick and Annie..

"What do you think of it?" Peeta asks, appearing at my side out of nowhere as I study the turquoise waves, dolphins, and copper-headed mermen. He catches me off guard but I'm so in awe of his artistry that I don't have to consider what to say.

"It's wonderful," I tell him sincerely, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "Gorgeous," I add for good measure, gesturing to the seashell cluster on the top layer.

"I worked on it most of the week, and I'm still not completely happy with it," Peeta admits, turning toward me. He looks the healthiest I've seen since his rescue. His hair has grown out enough that it's curling again, and the purple streaks beneath his eyes have faded away, leaving the brightness of his blue eyes and smile to draw my attention.

"Don't say that. It's perfect."

I swallow nervously when his gaze locks on mine, and I realize I've been staring at him while my mind wanders. He is so close to the old Peeta tonight that my heart aches for what we had in the Quarter Quell arena before everything went to hell. The way I kissed him, the way I knew I'd give up on living if he was taken away from me.

He's looking at me intently. When one corner of his mouth turns up in a questioning smile, a swelling warmth trickles out from my heart and careens through my veins to each of my extremities until every nerve hums. Peeta is here, alive. While neither one of us is screwed together exactly right anymore, and neither of us may live to see the end of the war, for now, we're here together. We made it out, and that has to mean something.

I reach for his hand and thread my fingers through his. He frowns, perplexed, until I tug on his hand and walk away, leading him out of the room. "Where are we going?" he asks, his voice low.

"I don't know. Not here," I say, ignoring the glances people give us. Gale is nowhere to be found, not that he would stop me now. I don't want to hurt him, but I can't pretend there's any chance of me ever wanting him the way I want Peeta.

"Away from the audience," Peeta murmurs. He sounds a little in awe. "Is this real? If not, please don't wake me up."

That's the old him I love morphed into the person he is now. Older, wiser.

We stop at the end of the hallway, where one of the overhead lights is burnt out, leaving a shadowed corner perfect for two. We're alone, but I want to take no chances.

I take his other hand in my free one. "It's real," I admit.

"We've never---"

"I know." My voice shakes at the end of my admission. "I wanted to be alone with you. Everyone, they've seen enough, judged enough. I want this to be ours."

"Want what to be ours?"

"I don't know exactly, but I really want you to kiss me right now."

He smiles widely and laughs, his eyes crinkling up in the corners. I don't know if he's in disbelief or excited or what, but I return it. He doesn't keep me waiting. My lids have already dropped before he presses the softest kiss on my lips. His arms wrap around my waist as I lean into him, two hearts bent on the same quest---to be closer, as close as we can get. When my hand inches beneath his shirt to feel the warmth of his body, he gasps at the first touch of my fingers. "Where have you been all night, in an icebox?"

Instead of denying my whereabouts, I pull him closer, kissing him deeply, then pulling away to trail more down the cord of his neck. I brush my nose against his skin, taking in that Peeta smell that makes me feel like I'm home.

Whatever happens in the upcoming days, whether we're thrown into the middle of another fight or not, at least we have tonight.

i promise one day i’ll stop going blah blah blah (that’s a kesha reference btw) but i had an odesta fic idea that i need to talk about bc i don’t think i’ll get around to writing it but i feel like it’d be fucking fire

okayyy so i really like exploring the codependent aspect of their relationship. even though i personally don’t think they met as kids, that’s a hc i use a lot bc

1) it’s gives them as much time together as possible (it’s what they deserve)

2) it gives us a larger timeline to see how they went from enjoying each others company to literally feeling like they’re surviving off of it. and that’s not to say that they don’t enjoy each others company anymore—it’s just that spending time apart stops being something they find annoying (as children, as friends, as two dorky 12/13 year olds whose #1 worry is finding a place to hang out without a chaperone breathing down their necks). now, as adults, the other’s absence is all-consuming. it burns

and that transition would probably start when finnick was reaped. it’s something their parents would recognize, i think, so i think they’d be more lenient with how much time they can spend together and for how long. and at first annie and finnick are happy about that, they think they hacked the system or something, but i think they’d realize pretty soon that it’s not enough. annie still has nightmares about finnick being reaped/in the arena and finnick spends annie’s entire shift at her parents store literally just sitting there and helping when needed and they still can’t sleep without the other person breathing their stank sour morning breath into their face. their parents think it’s sappy at best and so fucking dramatic at worst. it’s obviously starting to get bad, and it gets worse when finnick turns 16

then, when annie is 18, it gets to the point of no return (or so it seems… we all know annie raises her kid without finnick by the end of the trilogy). not being able to sleep very well without the other is nothing new. but annie wont eat if he’s not sitting right next to her. finnick cant sleep if he’s in bed and she’s still doing something downstairs… or in the bathroom that’s literally adjoined to their room. they always liked cuddling, but it’s terrifying—like, terrifying—when one of them wakes up and the other isn’t within arms reach. they always hated when someone (read: their parents) put a halt to all their hangouts, but now finnick can only spend so much time away from her before he genuinely (like… genuinely) contemplates killing himself

and that’s really ugly. codependency is very ugly, and i think i kinda leaned too much into the sappiness perspective and downplayed a lot of their habits in the longfic about them, so i am literally fucking feening to go more into depth about that. which i absolutely already did here (i didn’t mean for this post to get so long) but i would love to highlight certain moments of their relationship and use that as a buildup for why finnick reacted the way he did in 13. like, annie obviously wasn’t the only reason he was behaving like that (he has his own trauma that he’s been suppressing for the last 10 years even without the rebellion being in the picture) but the way katniss described him after his reunion with annie is so jarring

A Six of Crows Hunger Games AU would go so hard. Hear me out. (And don’t steal this idea cause I might write it.

So

Kaz gets reaped when he’s eleven and Jordie volunteers for him. Jordie dies in the games and Kaz becomes deeply traumatized and feels partially responsible since Jordie died to save him. Following Jordie’s death, Kaz slowly becomes friends with Jesper and starts to recover somewhat, similar to Katniss’s friendship with Gayle minus the weird possessiveness.

But then. When Kaz is seventeen, Inej gets reaped. Kaz knows of her and admires her, but they haven’t spoken much. But THEN, Jesper gets reaped for the boys. Kaz is paralyzed with fear because he already lost one brother, he cannot lose another. So in a panic he volunteers. Jesper is furious but he can’t change anything about it.

Kaz and Inej’s mentor? Nina. She won the games the year before Jordie was reaped and is severely traumatized. Also, I’m thinking Matthias was a peacekeeper and they fell in love on Nina’s victory tour following her win, but when they were found out, Matthias was sent to the capitol to work underground.

Okay so then Kaz and Inej form a tentative alliance, yk, for survival. But once they’re in the arena, Kaz is trying to be all tough & every man for himself, but THEN, he gets his leg injured!! Like Peeta does in the og. And because Inej is so wonderful, she finds him and takes care of him. But Kaz is still touch averse so they have troubles. Cue them being forced into a fake relationship for the cameras to survive, which obviously muddles up both of their real feelings for each other. Kaz feels incredibly guilty for being attracted to Inej even though she’s only kissing him to save her own life; Inej feels deeply sad that the only way she can have any kind of romantic contact is if she’s pretending to want someone (bc in the original Finnick is forced into prostitution much like Inej so that definitely exists in the hunger games world unfortunately). But also Inej does want Kaz. Deep down. And they’ll get together eventually.

But then once Kaz and Inej survive the first games and become mentors the story could get into catching fire territory. Matthias comes back but he’s highjacked against Nina. Wylan is the son of a high ranking government official but his father tried to kill him so he ran to district twelve, but he knows all important government secrets so him and Jesper start to scheme to bring the capitol down. Wylan thinks Jesper is just doing it for Kaz, but he slowly realizes that Jesper cares about all the children who were victimized, not just his friend. They fall in love.

I never even thought of the point about Prim and Katniss's mother being left alone if she dies in her second games.>> Me too. I only realized it more recently when I rewatched the first and then the second film. I had only seen the first one once, so I decided to see what her situation was like, and she loved her sister and didn't get along with her mother. I also read that if Katiniss died, her family would have to leave the victors' village, and they would have to return the money. So which makes the whole saving Peeta thing pointless and a forced, cheap romance. At the beginning of Catching Fire, she doesn't give Peeta shit, so when the games are announced, her first thought is to save him and not her sister? And is she the one who inspires the rebellion? She doesn't do anything in the second film that shows she's a hero like she did in the first. All she does is treat Finnick badly even after he saved Peeta; not caring about Mags; and she still planned to run away with Peeta, while the others killed themselves. Detail, from the moment she asks Haymitch to save Peeta, it shows that not even she believed in his potential, which makes him weaker than he is. She can't even save him. If it wasn't for Finnick, he would have died at the beginning of the arena.

Nine years of pent up thoughts, feelings and frustrations about this series--and yet I suddenly struggle with what to say!

Let me address your last point first: Finnick saves Peeta's life in the arena. Only for him to die himself. Peeta got to live and have kids with Katniss (that she never wanted), two whole people that would not exist had it not been for Finnick. I hope those brats at least learned his name. (In the book, nothing about any of the other characters is acknowledged, what the film did at the end, with Katniss looking at Annie's photo of her with her son, that doesn't happen in the book--clearly even the screenwriters realised some sort of conclusion was needed!). Look, I don't give a fuck about the k/p pairing, let them live their little life in their little meadow or wherever the fuck they are, I just hate how unfairly the series treats everyone else and how many people lost their lives bc of these two.

K/P are presented simultaneously as star-crossed lovers and fake dating to lovers, so both popular tropes and I wonder if that's why they are such a beloved pairing. Personally, I don't buy either. Like I said in your previous ask, the way they both get to win their first games is way too contrived for me. (Are you telling me that, in the previous 73 games, no other district tried to pull a similar "we are in love" stunt? The very fact that a boy and a girl are reaped from each district, pretty much begs for such a stunt, especially as they're teenagers. Or how about pretending to fall in love with someone from a different district, in the arena? That would make for a juicy viewing!)

Then, I don't understand why Katniss became the Mockingjay, other than that she was the main character and the author wanted it so. She doesn't care about the revolution. She's not some Alexei Navalny figure, gods rest his soul. She's a wind up toy that goes "Peeta Peeta Peeta waah waah waah". Am I supposed to be convinced that someone as powerful as President Snow is threatened by one teenage girl??? He could have her killed and make it look an accident or suicide without a blink of an eye. He could have Prim killed and make it look an accident without a blink of an eye. Jesus.

I don't think any particular character should have been the Mockingjay, btw. I think all of them should have been it. At least those that were at the forefront of the revolution. Go full I Am Spartacus, except literally, after all, this is clearly influenced by the gladiator games.

I wonder if fans of this series are all also k/p shippers, bc there isn't in reality anything else. But bc it deals with Serious Issues, it allows people to make deep posts on tumblr about how oppressive governments are wrong and war is bad. And still they get to have their OTP to write fluffy fanfics about.

I was looking through one-star reviews of Mockingjay on Goodreads again and found a recent one, which articulates the problems really well. Also there is a post I reblogged a while ago. I think the "terminal incuriosity of Katniss's POV" hits the nail on the head for me. Curiosity is a trait value highly, so her narration would never work for me.

I know Katniss has trauma. But the thing is, every-fucking-body in Panem has trauma, bc you can't live under an oppressive regime and not have trauma.

Mockingjay is the most disappointing book I've ever read.

katniss and haymitch you don’t get ITTTTTT the way that after she realizes that she can’t be the mockjay anymore bc it reflects back in peeta and breaks down the only one she wants to comfort her is haymitch bc he’s the only one who loves peeta too AUGGGH

+ finnicks story . and how katniss asks haymitch if that happened to him and he says no bc when he got back from the games his whole family and girlfriend were dead to punish him for the forcefield . kms . haymitch saying they had nothing to hold over him after that and katniss saying until her and peeta came along ……

and worst of all . when they get back from rescuing the tributes and katniss’ internal monologue is so hopeful and happy . her wondering what it will be like to see peeta again and hoping he’ll kiss her and that it will feel like it did in the quell (of i thought i was something of an expert in hunger but this is an entirely new kind FAME) and how she runs towards him and he towards her and she thinks he’s gonna cup her face . and then . well :(

if we’re criticizing thg, i would like to say the quiet part out loud irt to why finnick’s death fucked with so many people’s heads: collins killed finnick off in the same book where she revealed the level of brutality he faced irt to sexual trauma at the hands of the capitol, after using it as reasoning for finnick’s inability to be a figurehead for the revolution. in addition, she did so after taking the time to fully establish just how much he & annie were each other’s support as deeply traumatized individuals, in a way i’d argue was a better thematic reinforcement than any relationship katniss could’ve ever ended up in. if any death was pointless, it was his. i’d go as far as to call it gratuitous, even, considering the manner of death and the almost… sensationalist nature of it…. like, he was killed by lizard-dogs.

and look, death is random, i get the point. that doesn’t mean it was executed well, or that the right character was used to make it.

idk, even as someone not as aggravated by the series as you are, and as someone who can still relatively enjoy it while making criticisms, it’s irksome to see people hum and hah about finnick’s death. they want to complain without ever saying why it left such a bitter taste in the mouth. but there is a very big why to talk about, and its just as relevant to the overall political commentary as the rest of the series! also to comment on district 13, it’s funny because i initially read them as the neoliberal extreme to the facist extreme of the capitol, with katniss being the one who wanted to burn it all down, so i guess not quite hitting her point is a habit for collins. or maybe i just need to give it a more sober reread as an adult, lmao. (but oh, speaking of, don’t read the prequel. ever. save yourself, it could be classed as a form of torture. it’s bad and a waste of time. like oh my gosh the essay i could write about all the horrible neo-liberal ass-showing that takes place. holy fuck)

yeah and like personally the thing that additionally irritates me is we don't even really get to know finnick. or any character outside of katniss and peeta really. every other relevant character is merely a face with a few key attributes or background trauma but they don't feel like actual people so the deaths not only feel pointless bc they're there for shock value but also bc i feel like i don't even have any connection to the characters who are dying. like she's so bare bones in the writing and overwhelmingly plot focused that it leaves most everyone barely any room to actually develop or become fully realized as people so it ends up being a read rife with senseless drama all to make a very watered down point about how "all violence is bad" and "the oppressed can be as bad as the oppressors"

at first i thought rue was like, told my her mentor to get close to katniss bc katniss obviously has a weakness for kids (volunteering for prim) and then betray and kill her, but the further i got along the more i realized that wasn't going to happen, and then when she finally was killed omg it was even more heartbreaking.
