I have been taken by the sickness again (curse you viruses!) and sleep eludes me. Brainrot does not. What do you think each of the counselors are like when they're sick?
booo viruses :( i hope you feel better soon!
i think Jacob is the most dramatic about it. if you've seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off, he's Cameron
Tumblr media
total baby. even just for a cold. injuries, he barely notices, but gods forbid this man start to sniffle
Abi honestly prolly does what you're supposed to - she takes the day off, stays in comfy pants, drinks honey lemon tea & eats toast, takes the gross meds, a bath, & she's good by morning. couldn't be me but. yk. girlbossing
Ryan for sure just pretends it's not happening. he takes some cold n flu meds, keeps a water bottle close, and keeps having to blink spots out of his vision but he's fine! he's fine until his sister notices & chews him out bc he's always telling HER to take it easy when she's sick & "look here, mr. hypocrite, you better get in that bed or ELSE" so then he goes & lays in a dark room, listening to his podcast until he falls asleep
i think Emma prolly complains about it the entire time & spends an hour in a hot bath but i also don't think she stops working. if she can't go out, she's answering emails, keeping her social media updating, working on editing/scheduling/whatever an influencer does. picture Emma in her desk chair with atrocious hair, wrapped in a blanket, three mugs of tea, & a sinus strip just firing off emails
i see Dylan as a low-energy sick. barely awake, shuffling to the kitchen for crackers (he has a weak stomach when sick) wrapped in his comforter with his hair sticking up. sometimes he crashes on the couch, sometimes he makes it back to the bed, but it's all restless sleep, tossing & turning :( he keeps mumbling nonsense to his cat, who definitely tricks him into feeding him twice. you go schrodinger <3
Kaitlyn HATES being sick. she wakes up with a stuffy nose & a fever & she's like... "i'm gonna kill someone today & it might be myself". she has shit to do. she resists as much as she can & tries to do a bunch of things just to spite it, which usually ends up in her crashing hard & sleeping for twelve hours to recuperate. everyone knows to stay out of her way when she's stalking around, pale and clammy with a thermos at her hip, & just wait for the burnout
Nick doesn't get sick, even germs don't want this weirdo. i'm just kidding. kinda. anyway Nick one thousand percent just straight up goes comatose. dead to the world for 24 hours & then he's right as rain when he wakes up. how? no one knows. why? no one is brave enough to ask.
the love of my life, Laura, also tries to strongarm thru it but she's better about it. she takes her meds, sucks on cough drops, prolly drinks coffee to stay awake, & she's better about managing her workload. it's kind of just a background thing to her & it works great until her fever spikes high enough to be noticeable or she slips up & then Max finds out. he coaxes her to lay down on the couch while he makes them some soup & then they watch movies together until she falls asleep :,)
the other love of my life, Max, doesn't stand a chance. he coughs once & his girlfriend has a thermometer in his mouth & a mug of tea warming up. he always tries to downplay it, "honey, really, it's nothing" & it never works. he spends all day with a live-in nurse & he feels bad that she keeps doing things for him so he continuously plays the "i'm feeling better" & she lets him do it for the ten minutes before he throws up, then it's back to bed "& cut the bullshit this time, max"

BC Ferries undermines the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms by its abuse against minorities.
Over the past 12 months authorities in BC have witnessed a surge of complaints against BC Ferries for discrimination and racism by BC Ferries staff.  Various communities across the province have voiced their concern over the apparent different way BC Ferries interacts with people based on their look or background. “It is seriously troubling,” said one victim from Nanaimo, “The Trump effect seems to have gotten way over BC Ferries heads and they are violating our rights as citizens with their aggressive behavior towards people of immigrant background.”  One man of indigenous background says he was threatened with a K9 dog and aggressively kicked out of the terminal for smoking a vape while a caucasian male was only given a warning not to smoke when he was smoking a vape. “They are treating us differently,” said the woman "and I hope someone does something about it soon, this is just not right and it is not what Canada is all about.” BC Ferries said every case is treated differently and declined to comment on the specific cases mentioned above.

What’s a Carnival w/o a Kiss?
Nishinoya, Tendou, Kuroo, and Bokuto visit you at your kissing booth.
Fem reader
Choose your character ending!!
Your best friends name is Mina bc I’m watching MHA and needed a name.
Not edited.
When they approved your VBC kissing booth you were shocked. You thought for sure it would be denied but apparently they thought it would be fun. “What’s the harm in a kiss?” The principle had said while following it up by stating if anyone was truly uncomfortable they didn't have to participate, it was the person’s choice to participate in the kissing booth.
You spent the day preparing the booth and painting it for the carnival tomorrow. You were nervous about it even though the kissing booth was your idea. You only suggested it becasue you thought it would be a great way to raise money since everyone on the girls and boys teams were well know. Plus you thought you could get out of it. nope, if your best friend Mina was participating there was no way she would let you out of it since she knew if you were really uncomfortable with it you wouldnt have thought of the idea yourself. “Too bad so sad” she said while you poured. The girls team would be the ones in the booth Saturday morning and the boys in the booth in the afternoon. Your time was scheduled for noon and youd be in there for fifteen minutes.
You werent just nervous because you had to kiss people, but what if no one wanted to kiss you? What if the entire fifteen minutes you had no one would show up? Just lines and lines for Mina who was right after you. You would feel so embarrassed and it might wreck your self esteem. You sigh and wipe off a bit of paint where you spilled and fixed your other mistakes.
“This looks amazing y/n!” (Noya/tendou/kuroo/Bo) said as he came over to you and you laughed softly “really? Thanks. It isnt hard though it’s just two colors” he laughs and picks up the paint brush with red on the end and placed a bit on your nose and you gasp, your cheeks flushing “doesnt mean you arent good at it!” he says and you smile softly. Somehow just his presence seemed to calm you down “thank you” you said softly and he nods with a grin. you take the white and paint a stripe down his cheek and then giggle as he gasps in shock.
Somehow in the paint fight ended up with him holding your hands above your head and painting doodles on your face while you chuckled and stared up at him. He was so pretty, you didnt get much time to appreciate his looks but you thanked whatever gods were above for this chance
“Hey! Save it for the booth!” His Coach calls out and you feel your face flush as he just laughs above you and rolls off you “sorry coach!” he replies and you avoid eye contact, too embarrassed for being caught goofing off.
“The booth is going to be amazing tomorrow” he says and helps you wash your brushes. “I hope so” you whisper softly, your anxieties coming back. When you’re done you walk him to the gym door so he can head to practice “Hey” he says softly and you look up at him “i’ll see you at the booth tomorrow, okay?” he says with a grin and it makes your stomach flop and your heart race. Your cheeks feel warm as you smile back at him “i’ll-” you clear your throat so you can sound more confident and then grin “i’ll be looking forward to it”
You couldnt sleep, nervous for the kissing booth but now you were nervous because you knew at least ONE person would be there in your line. You didnt even care if you had no other people who wanted to kiss you because you knew your crush was going to be there. At least you hoped that was what he meant.
That morning you made sure you wore your favorite outfit and put on a little perfume, you did your hair your favorite way so you could have more confidence in yourself and at the end of getting ready you felt actually really good about yourself. You looked in the mirror and smiled, maybe today would be the day you would kiss your crush.
Mina shaked your shoulders and squealed “are you ready?!” she said and pushed you towards the booth you had been abiding all day a long “nooooo” is his you respond and she just laughs. “Time to switch!” she sings and your Captain laughs at the boos that Mina get and she waves “sorry boys” she says and pats your shoulder as she exits the booth “good luck” she says and you smile and swallow hard. “Now it’s time for y/n!” Mina sings and you walk through the booth, pausing for a moment when you hear whistles and cheers which was the opposite of what you were expecting. You take a seat on the stool and feel your cheeks flush as the first boy steps up and hands you a red ticket and then presses his lips to yours for a second.
After five minutes kissing didnt even feel like kissing anymore. You lost count of the people who wanted to kiss you but after a few more minutes the line ends and you get a break. You look at your phone to check how much time you have left. 4 minutes to go. You felt your heart begin to shrink when you thought he wouldn’t come. You were distracted by a text from Mina you didnt notice someone approaching until he spoke.
Nishinoya
“Is this booth open?” he asks with a chuckle and your eyes snap up as a smile spreads across your lips “i thought you werent gonna make it” you say with a lilt in your voice and he laughs “how could i miss this? I get to kiss the most beautiful girl not to mention my long time crush” you feel your cheeks flush “i've been waiting for you all day, not to mention i won you this!” he pulls up a small teddy bear and your eyes widen with a chuckle “really! That’s so sweet Noya!” he gets a little nervous now, he confessed his feelings and you didn't say anything about it yet. He feels his face flush as he fumbles with his ticket in his hands. “So.. uh.. Yeah” he says and rocks on his toes as he looks at his ticket. You laugh and hold out your left hand for the ticket with a small smile. He grins as his cheeks dust darker pink as he places the piece of paper gently in your palm. You hop off the stool and lean across the booth to cup his cheek “i’ve been waiting all day for you” you whisper and then you press your lips to his.
Your lips softly rest against his for a moment before you’re pulling back “no, wait” he says softly and cups your cheeks, pulling them back to his own. His tongue touches your bottom lip and you meet it with your own, deepening the kiss and humming in happiness as your lips move together
“Hello?!” the boy behind him asks annoyed and you pull apart with blushing cheeks “sorry guys y/n’s time is over!” Mina says from behind you. You dont know when she appeared but you felt embarrassed anyway. You wave to the long line of guys that had appeared and they all looked mad as Nishinoy just looked like he was in heaven as he walked around the side of the booth to meet you at the back. “Hi” you say shyly and he smiles “hi beautiful” he says you blush “I really like you, Yuu” you whisper with a shy laugh and he takes your hand, lacing your fingers together. “I would hope so! You kissed me like it!” you laugh and rock your shoulder into his playfully “wanna go get some cotton candy?” he asks and you laugh “yes! That sounds amazing. Then maybe we could ride the ferris wheel”
Tendou
“Helloooo” he says happily while waving his ticket slowly in front of your phone “aren’t phones against the rules?” you laugh and roll your eyes “you’re here” you say softly and he smiles and runs a hand through his hair “here i am!” he says with a laugh that shows his anxiety. You take his ticket and then reach up and run your hands through his hair “can i tell you something?” you ask, grateful there isn’t anyone behind him right now. He nods, his ruby eyes shining as they stare into yours “I’ve been waiting for you Satori” you say and laugh shyly and he cups your cheeks, pressing his lips against yours softly. Its soft and sweet and when you pull back he’s pulling your lips back to his again and again, quickly peppering kisses against your lips as you chuckle. “Tendou?” he kisses you and hums in response “maybe” kiss kiss “we should” more kisses “tendou!” mina shouts and he pulls back to look behind you as he still holds your face “take her away, her time is over” tendou shouts for joy and hops through the booth window, taking your hand and leading you away as you chuckle “lets get some lunch and talk about how much you love me” he says and you laugh “sounds good to me” you respond and squeeze his hand. He looks to you with a gasp before his face turns into a grin “and obviously i’ll talk about how much i love you back. It wont just be about me” you laugh “i know, i could tell how much you liked me from those kisses”
Kuroo
“Hey there cutie” he says and you laugh as you shove your phone in your pocket. He always had a way of taking away all your anxiety. You smile up at him as he hands you a red ticket. “Glad you could finally make it Tetsu” you joke as you take his ticket, placing it in the basket with all the others. “I told you id be here” he said with a smile as he leaned his elbows on the booth and smiled at you now he was your height. “And here i thought you were just waiting to kiss all the girls” he hums and reaches out to tuck your hair behind your ear “nah, i only wanna kiss you. I mean, why would i want to kiss anyone else when i have you?” you hop off the stool and lean closer “and how are you sure you even have me?” you whisper and he cups your cheek softly “you have no idea how bad I am hoping” he says, his eyes showing how much vulnerability he is hiding with his teasing “same here” you whisper as he cups your cheeks and presses his lips to yours. The kiss ends sooner than you hoped but the way he is smiling melts your heart “are you done here yet?” he asks with a chuckle and mina behind you yells out “yes! She is! Go on!” she ushers you out of the booth. He holds his hand out to you and you take it with a smile, lacing your fingers together “I guess you were right” you say and he laughs “about what?’ he asks and you squeeze his hand as a blush dusts your cheeks “you have me”
Bokuto
“Hey!” he shouts and you look up at him “no hey hey hey?” you ask as you stand from the stool and smile. He laughs and scratches behind his head “i’m just a little nervous” he says with a shy laugh “hey” you say softly and he meets your eye with his cheeks blushing “I was really hoping you’d come” you say softly, your heart racing. “Really?” he asks and leans forward, placing his ticket on the booth edge and you laugh with a nod. You raise your hand and use your finger to tell him to come closer which he does with a smile and you cup his cheek with one hand while leaning into his opposite ear “i really, really like you Kou” you whisper and he hums in excitement “i like you too!” he says and you laugh “maybe i should kiss you now” he says and you nod as you feel yourself get twice as nervous. He cups your cheeks “so beautiful” he whispers before he presses his lips to yours. You hum at the same time and then chuckle as you kiss him deeper. He pulls back and you chuckle as you wipe his bottom lip with your thumb. Mina taps your shoulder “you’re done hun, now go get your man” she says and you laugh as you make your way around to Bo who excitedly takes your hand “do you wanna maybe turn this into a date?” he asks and you smile with a nod “I’d love that Kou”
~ending~
You spend the whole day with him and watch the sunset form the Ferris wheel, stopping right at the top for you guys. “Wait” you say and turn to him “weren’t you supposed to be in the kissing booth too?” You ask and he chuckles softly “yeah I ditched. I don’t want to kiss anyone else but you” you smile, your cheeks flushing and heart dancing at his words “well if I knew that in the beginning” you say with a laugh and he cups your cheek “you only wanna kiss me too?” He asks softly, his eyes drifting to your lips as you nod. “Then maybe you should be my girl” he says and you laugh “yeah maybe I should” you say just before his lips press against yours for the umpteenth time already today, sending warm fuzzies to your heart and spawned more butterflies you were sure to fly out and into his mouth.

LAYER ONE: THE OUTSIDE - Name: Light / Joy - Eye Color:  Black - Hair Style/color: Textbook Japanese girl hairstyle tbh, for the few of you who have seen my pic, I’ve been pretty much wearing this hairstyle my whole life SDHFSDJF. only bc im too lazy to think of any hairstyle that fits my head. - Height: 4′11 (150 cm) - Clothing style: I (ironically) wear a lot of red and black, during formal occasions, only bc. pastel colours make me look a lot younger than I really am. But usually I just wear a jeans skirt + casual shoes and whatever shirt/top that goes with it. - Best physical feature: No idea, maybe the fact that I look super young???
LAYER TWO: THE INSIDE - Your fears: Losing my family---honestly I’m so close with my immediate family I can’t really see myself living without them. I also have serious acrophobia and stage frights, but my stage fright is worse then I thought. My acrophobia is manageable as I grow older, and it depends. I’m also terrified of theme park rides ( rollercoasters, Ferris wheel, and other wild stuff ). Other than that I don’t really have any fears. I’m pretty bold and shameless. - Your guilty pleasure: I like petting furries. I almost itch to pet any animal I come across that’s fluffy with fur. I also have a cute aggression syndrome aka if I see a cute plushie or round things like rabbits and hamsters, I really want to squish them. - Ambitions for the future: Travelling, meeting some long-term online friends I’ve always wanted to meet in person, getting a dream job. Have fun in life.
LAYER THREE: THOUGHTS - Your first thoughts waking up: Check my emails, my phones, and reply to all my messages, then recall my entire schedule for today. - What you think about before bed: Think about my schedule for tomorrow---whether I got everything done, or if I’ve forgotten anything. Then daydream about my fictional children before I go to sleep.
LAYER FOUR: WHAT’S BETTER? - Single or group dates: I do well with both single or group dates. It just depends on whether people want me around. - To be loved or respected: Both. Though they come naturally for me. I’m the sort of person who only loves someone after I decided that I respect them. So they both come hand-in-hand. Without respect, there’s no love. and I can’t love if I don’t respect them. - Beauty or brains: Both. But my definition if beauty if that the other person knows how to keep their appearance--they don't have to be beautiful, but I’m super fussy so I don’t think I can have a nice impression on someone who doesn’t care about their appearance, or don’t care to shave or wears like a beggar. As long as they groom and dress appropriately.  - Dogs or cats: Dogs. ( Sorry WWX ).
LAYER FIVE: DO YOU. - Lie: I have no opinion on lies. Whichever works. Sometimes you can’t tell the full truth---but it’s not necessarily lying. As I said... whichever works. As long as it’s not done with malicious intentions. - Believe in yourself: Strictly speaking, I don’t believe in myself, but I cope with it by behaving spontaneously, since I believe that less thinking draws out my more logical/practical behaviour. I’ve also acknowledged that I perform best in this way. - Believe in love: I do believe in love---in all its forms: familial love, romantic love, platonic love, friendship, and so on. - Want someone: Yes... I do. But I have a difficult personality to match with anyone. That’s one of my problems. I don’t like clingy people, but I don’t want people who are too distant as well that it’s difficult to connect on a personal level. I also really love my freedom.
LAYER SIX: EVER? - Been on stage: Yeah, I have. Despite having incredibly serious stage fright, I’ve somehow managed to grab every opportunity and put myself up there.  - Done drugs: No and never.  - Changed who you were to fit in: I have a bad habit of reflecting how other people behave towards me. I don’t think I ‘change’ to fit in. It’s more like I just naturally reflect their behaviour. The only times I’m myself is when I’m talking to myself. But I’m trying to be consistent.
LAYER SEVEN: FAVORITES - Favorite color: Blue, red, black. - Favorite animal: Bunnies, hamsters, hedgehogs, dogs. - Favorite movie: LOTR, The Hobbit, Pacific Rim, Lilo and Stitch, Mulan, Finding Nemo, Tarzan, Mo Dao Zu Shi....... (they’re all heavy with family themes I’m biased ASDHASDASD). - Favorite game: Spyro, Crash, Bioshock, LOTRO, Frogger, this old Tarzan game, Lion King.
LAYER EIGHT: AGE - Day your next birthday will be: Tuesday! - How old will you be: 23 (I’m old aDSsd)  - Does age matter: Not really, not to me. But I tend to mingle with the older people more bc they seems to.......like me??? People around my age don’t really take a fancy to me......Maybe bc I’m odd and eccentric and just have a rlly old personality.

Looking down on Pierowall, the main village on the Orkney island of Westray, you are right to notice that the folk here are (and always have been) adaptable. The North Sea is the main actor in these dune-built islands and can’t be denied when it gets the urge to cut an island in half or build another one someplace else. Papa Westray (just visible in the upper right) was connected to Westray when farmers were building the Knap of Howar around 3800 BC. You could walk over there. Today you take the pedestrian ferry over to Papay (local’s jargon) or the Orkney airline, the world’s shortest scheduled flight: record time 53 seconds. In 2018, the Black Ball flag celebrates 200 years in maritime operation. Since 1818, ships have proudly flown the Black Ball flag—displayed as a black “ball” on a red background. Today, the flag is flown on the mast of the MV COHO, serving the run from Port Angeles, WA to Victoria, BC. Prior to 1818, ships sailed on their own schedule, waiting until their holds were full. This left passengers and freight to languish in port—sometimes for weeks—until the ship was ready to depart. The Black Ball Line changed all of that. Its founders, a group of New York Quakers, had a profoundly simple, but game-changing idea: scheduled service. While the modern traveler probably couldn’t imagine not having a set time for departure, the Black Ball Line, with its fleet of trans-Atlantic packet ships, signaled the first-time ships left port on a specific date. ⚓️ . . . . #shiphistory #blackball #blackballflag #blackballline #anniversary #maritime #history #maritimehistory #nonprofit #sshsa #shipsters #shiphistorycenter #steam #ferry #steamship #steamships (at The Steamship Historical Society of America)

CANTLON: HOCKEY NEWS AND NOTES
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - While in our safe places under a pandemically-induced house arrest, there is some limited hockey news still going on. XL CENTER The XL Center, despite being shut down, progress on the facility's brand spanking new chiller project has officially begun. According to Michael W. Freimuth, the Executive Director of the CRDA (Capital Regional Development Corporation), a construction management contract was awarded to Hartford's Consigli Construction Co., Inc. “Consigli has bid out the chiller package to two qualified bidders who have completed NHL chillers in the past – Cimeco & Ice Builders – those bids are currently under review. The remaining bid packages are going out today and the bid packages are due on April 15th.” The project schedule indicates mobilization to begin in May and is set for completion by September 2020 in time for the start for both of the 2020-21 college hockey and AHL Wolf Pack regular seasons. NHL DRAFT Sadly, another victim to the COVID-19 virus that initially began in Wuhan, China is the summer NHL Draft spectacular that was slated to be held in Montreal on June 26-27. The NHL combines, NHL Awards Show in Las Vegas and the NHL Draft were all shut down. It looks like the NHL Draft will be held remotely at the NHL offices and will likely occur with a video hookup with all 31 teams. It will be handled with NBCSN and TSN who were going to broadcast Day 1 and TSN Day two. That is unless conditions dramatically change in the next three months in the US, Canada, and Europe and that doesn’t seem very likely. PRO SIGNINGS Ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger, Matt Donovan, has re-signed with the Milwaukee Admirals for the 2021-22 AHL season. The team also signed ex-Pack captain, Cole Schneider (UCONN), to a new AHL, one-year deal for next season. Meanwhile, in Sweden, 2019 second-round draft pick of the Rangers center Karl Henriksson signs a deal with Frolunda HC (Sweden-SHL) and is eligible to play for Sweden 2021 WJC Team. This season just concluded, he played a majority of his games with Frolunda HC J-20 team in the Super Elite League, got in eight SHL games and was loaned out to Sodertalje SK in Allsvenskan League and skated for the 2020 Sweden WJC Team. -Ex-Pack Nick Latta signs with EHC Straubing (Germany-DEL) for next season after three seasons with EHC Wolfsburg. While ex-Pack Steven Moses goes from Jokerit Helsinki (Finland-KHL) to SC Rapperswil-Jona (Switzerland-LNA). -Greg Ireland, former AHL head coach with Grand Rapids and San Antonio was named Italian Nation team coach replacing Clayton Beddoes who he replaced with HC Bolzano (Italy-EBEL) mid-season. Beddoes had a solid college career with Lake Superior State in their heyday in the early 1990s and played for several years with Providence before heading over to Europe. COLLEGE HOCKEY The player signing numbers have picked up over the past week with several each day. The Wolf Pack latest signing was skating not far from the XL Center. Alex Whelan, a 6-0, 210-pound native of Ramsey, NJ, played four seasons at Quinnipiac University (ECACHL), including 13 goals,11 assists and a 24-point performance in 29 games this year as a senior for the Bobcats. Whelan, 22, an assistant captain led the Bobcat squad in plus/minus, with a plus 16, and finished second on the team in goals and third in points. He notched his second collegiate hat trick January 17th, in a 4-3 win at Holy Cross, and had a college career-best six-game point-scoring streak (4-3-7) from November 30 through January 10. In 141 career games with Quinnipiac, Whelan totaled 48 goals and 30 assists for 78 points, along with 38 penalty minutes.  He led the Bobcats in goals his sophomore season, 2017-18, with 16 in 38 games, and twice topped Quinnipiac skaters in shots-on-goal, with 175 in 2017-18 and 152 in 2018-19 his junior season. Whelan also earned ECACHL All-Academic Team honors for three straight years, from 2016-17 through 2018-19. - The latest signing came late Friday afternoon as freshmen Trevor Zegras (Avon Old Farms) left Boston University after one year and signed a standard three-year two-way entry-level contract. Joining him in SoCal in a rare Ivy League early exit is forward Jack Badini (Old Greenwich/CT Oilers-EHL) from Harvard to the Ducks. Hobey Baker candidate, Jason Cotton of Sacred Heart University (AHA) and his brother David of Boston College (HE) both signed with the Carolina Hurricanes. Jason signed a one-year free-agent deal and David, a two-year entry-level deal earlier in the week. Mattias Samuelsson, son of former New Haven Nighthawk and one time Ranger Kjell Samuelsson, has left Western Michigan (NCHC) for the Buffalo Sabres on a standard three year, two-way entry-level deal. Several Notre Dame (Big 10) players have signed deals like Callahan Burke (Colorado-AHL) and Colton Poolman (Calgary-NHL). The top school with the most signees is the Western Michigan Broncos (NCHC) with six, including the recently inked Rangers forward Austin Rueschhoff at 6’7 and 230 lbs. departing a year early on a two year, two-way entry-level deal. The other school with five signees is the Ferris State Bulldogs (WCHA), then with four are the University Vermont Catamounts (HE) and Michigan St. Spartans (Big 10) led by Patrick Khorodorenko who played one game with the Wolf Pack after signing before the season was suspended. In total, 58 Division I players have signed and 68 in total have signed pro deals so far. The Big 10 conference has 15 players, Hockey East has 14 signees and the WCHA and NCHC each have 10. Just one player has signed in Europe, in Teemu Pulkinnen Nebraska-Omaha (NCHC) with Jukerit (Finland-FEL) and there is just one grad transfer in Sean Dhooggee from University Wisconsin Badgers (Big 10) to Arizona State Sun Devils (NCAA Division-1 Independent). -Ryan Donald, an assistant coach with Yale University (ECACHL) has left to become head coach/GM of the expansion Cranbrook Bucks (BCHL) signing a four-year deal. He has been an assistant to head coach Keith Allain since 2014-15 and played four years for Yale. -The 10 finalists for the Mike Richter Award for the top college hockey goalie were announced including Spencer Knight (Darien/Avon Old Farms) of BC, unsigned Rangers draft pick senior Tyler Wall UMASS-Lowell (HE) and Jeremy Swayman, Maine (HE) who recently signed with the Boston Bruins. -The NCAA Division I/IIII Player of the Year is Norwich University Cadets (Northfield, VT) goalie Tom Aubruen (Chamonix, France). He finished with a 23-2-2 record and an obscene 0.77 GAA and a .967 save percentage in gaining, the Sid Watson Award. He was no academic slouch either with a 3.77 GPA in business management. His career playing numbers 65 games, a record of 50-8-5 and a .946 save percentage. He should get a training camp deal from some team in the NHL, AHL or ECHL. JUNIORS Very sadly, the Canadian Hockey League, the governing body for all three Canadian junior hockey leagues the OHL, QMJHL, and WHL formally canceled the playoffs and the 101st edition of the Memorial Cup, one of the great hockey treats in late spring. -The WHL has set its Bantam Draft for April 22nd and completed its first-ever US Prospects Draft on Wednesday, a two-round 44 player process of selecting prospects from the Western US. The only name of local interest is Riley Bassen, son of former NY Islander and Springfield Indian Bob Bassen, the current Director of Alumni Relations for the Dallas Stars who resides in Frisco, Texas.   EUROPE The KHL became the last hockey league to shut down as they canceled the rest of the Gagarin Cup playoffs at the quarterfinal round. This was necessary after two teams from outside Russia, Barys Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan and Jokerit Helsinki in Finland, because of their governmental restrictions they couldn’t host playoff games and travel restrictions prevented them from leaving their country. -The NHL announced this week that KHL free agents cannot be signed by NHL clubs till after May 1st. -One of two leagues to finish its tournament and crown a new champion was Turkey. The seven-team short season Turkish Super League (TSL) saw Buz Beykov SK of Istanbul end the five year run of Zeytinburnu SK as champion with a 4-2 championship-clinching win. Serkan Gumus, the first Turkish born non-import to win the scoring title tallied all four goals in the victory for Beykov. The Telford Tigers of the English Tier two National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) defeated the Peterborough Phantoms 8-3 to win the title with Brandon Whistle, nephew of former New Haven Nighthawk, Rob Whistle scoring a hat trick in the National Cup victory. In Serbia, they played just one game before the finals were canceled as Crvena Zvezda (Belgrade) won 4-2 over Vojvodina. -The Southern Hemisphere hockey season set to begin next month has been paused as well. The AIHL (Australian Ice Hockey League) has delayed the opening of its 30-game 2020 season that was slated to begin on April 18th. Neighboring nation New Zealand is still ready for its short season 16 game per team (five teams) NZIHL schedule and is holding firm on a May 15th start date, but are monitoring developments like the rest of the planet. The Southern Hemisphere is now entering its winter season and the possibility of a COVID-19 outbreak is expected from South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. -The IIHF has canceled the Worlds Championships scheduled to be held next month in Davos, Switzerland (Belarus, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, United States) and all the other world championships tournaments as well. Division I: Group A in Ljubljana, Slovenia (Austria, France, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, and South Korea), Division I Group B to be held in Katowice, Poland (Estonia, Japan, Lithuania, Poland, Serbia, and Ukraine ). Division II: Group A in Zagreb, Croatia (Australia, China, Croatia, Israel, Netherlands, and Spain) and Division II Group B in Reykyavik, Iceland (Belgium, Bulgaria,  Georgia, Iceland, Mexico, and New Zealand). Division III: Group A set for Kockelscheuer, Luxembourg (Luxembourg, North Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and United Arab Emirates-UAE).           Travelling is definitely one of my passions and I have thoroughly enjoyed my experiences thus far. Unfortunately, I haven’t explored as much of our beautiful country as I would have liked. One of my goals is to do a small, more local trip each year. I decided to head to the West Coast (aka best coast if you ask anyone who’s been there) to visit my good friend Shera. Shera and I met while we both lived and worked in Toronto several years ago. While we don’t get to see each other that often, she is such a strong, positive and inspiring person that I am so lucky to have in my life. I was really excited that she had some time in May for me to come visit. Many of my friends and family have been to and loved BC, so I was super excited about this trip. I decided to use some of my hard earned Aeroplan points to book my flights and was heading to BC for an extra long weekend.
Thursday, May 9th, 2019          I decided to take the bus from the Hamilton GO station to the airport. It takes just over an hour and drops you off at Terminal 1 (perfect for my AC flight). It is also super cost effective at about $12 each way and really easy if you packed light (which shockingly, I did). My flight was easy and I landed mid morning in Vancouver. Shera is currently teaching at BCIT, which has several campuses in the city. She works out of the Burnaby Campus, in the east part of the city. She picked me up and brought me towards here work where I could catch the Expo line into the city. Since I had so much that I wanted to do, I mapped out a bit of downtown to check out, starting with Downtown and Gastown. I wandered around downtown and hit up the Gas Town Steam Clock and a few things around that area. I love libraries, so I made sure to visit the Central Library, which had great views and a cool promenade at its base. I meandered along the majority of “downtown Vancouver” and the business district.                                                                                                                             I made my way down towards Stanley Park and rented a bike for about $30. I biked all the way around Stanley Park, which was way better than I had anticipated. Stanley Park borders Burrard Inlet and English Bay and is over 1000 acres in size. It was one of the first places to be discovered in the city and offers so much!  The park was amazing! I did enjoy many of its beautiful sights while biking along the 1000-year-old seawall.  I managed to get myself a bit lost while trying to find the famous “hollow tree. Let me tell you, the 27 km of hiking paths in Stanley Park are no fun with a bike (not that I explored even ¼ of that). After getting sufficiently lost and seeing the majority of the park including the Lions Gate bridge, Iron Workers Memorial Bridge and totem poles, I wandered around English bay for a bit. Seeing as it was getting quite late and Shera was expecting me at the ferry, I grabbed a snack (ice cream of course), dropped my bike off and hopped on the bus to the Horseshoebay Ferry terminal which took about 30 mins on the bus.                                                                                              Once I arrived at the ferry terminal, I met back up with Shera and grabbed my stuff out of the car so we could take the ferry home. We had some time to kill before the ferry arrived so we grabbed dinner and drinks at Trolls (I think) and caught up a bit. It had been 5 months since we had last seen each other and had a lot to catch up on!                                                                                          The ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Gibsons leaves at random intervals thorough the day (the schedule is confusing and doesn’t seem to be super consistent) and takes about 40 minutes to get to Gibsons (Langdale Ferry Terminal). Gibsons is technically part of the mainland but is really only accessible via ferry. Tons of people commute into the city each day from Gibsons and beyond- and here I complain sometimes about my 20 min commute.                                                                                                                       Once arriving at the terminal, we hopped into Shera’s baby (her new but older Ford Escape} and made the 10 or so minute drive over to her place. She has a lovely place in “Lower Gibsons” with beautiful views of the town and water. I was exhausted so went straight to bed after a long and enjoyable day.
Friday May 10th, 2019         Shera had to work quite early in the am so we took the first ferry over (about 5/6 am). The ferry is actually a lot more fun than I had expected. We met up with one of her friends on the ferry and enjoyed coffee and toast. The ferry is such a great place to get work done and hang out. If I had to commute, I would much prefer to do it on a boat where I could work, eat or sleep. Once we got off the ferry, I hopped in Kate’s car as she worked closer to the main part of the city than Shera. Kate dropped me off near the Vancouver General and I moseyed around for an hour or so before things opened. I grabbed a coffee and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the South Granville/East? part of the city. I walked down towards Granville Island and enjoyed the shops and the market. I had a second breakfast there and enjoyed some quiet time people watching. Granville market had some super cute spots but the entrance and Kids Market looked like the most fun part. Sadly, it wasn’t open, or I would have totally gone in.         After Granville Island, I hopped on the bus and headed out to the UBC campus where my partner Mike went to school and suggested. After a few glitches (aka my getting lost MULTIPLE times in the huge campus) I managed to find the treetop walk and the botanical gardens I had been looking for. The treetop walk was pretty neat although definitely not as exciting as I had thought. I was there with a big school group and managed to avoid them at all costs. I headed over to Nitobe gardens, which is considered to be on the most authentic Japanese gardens in the world with its cherry blossoms, irises, Japanese pruned trees and a koi pond. I think I hit 20,000 steps before 2 pm, which might be a record for me! I hopped back on the bus and got off just before Kitsilano. I was a bit hungry so grabbed some snacks at Whole Foods before enjoying some R&R on the beach. Shera came down from work and met me at Local Kitsilano, where we grabbed beers before heading to the ferry back home.         Shera was having some girls over the next day as a belated birthday celebration so we scooted over to the grocery and liquor stores before going home to get ready for dinner. Sadly, the oyster restaurant was still closed for the season so we settled for the delicious Mexican fare at Lonitas. We enjoyed some chips and guac along with delicious tacos. Shera took me on a little walking tour of Gibsons, despite being super full and tired. The town is so cute and quaint! Being so close to Van but with the perks of a small town are so amazing- I get why she loves it there so much. After our stroll and tour, we headed home for a good nights sleep before another jam-packed day.
Saturday May 11th, 2019        While I may be a Crossfit enthusiast, I am all for any and all forms of exercise and will try anything at least once! Shera has recently become involved in kickboxing and was excited to take me with her. While my spatial sense and hand eye coordination could use some work, I really enjoyed the class. My favourite part was the “elevator” at the end that included jabs and burpees. After a great sweat sesh, we grabbed some much needed coffees and showers in preparation for our afternoon.       Shera was having an intuitive come to the house to “read” us if you will. Now, I wouldn’t call myself a full on skeptic but I did have my reservations. I am happy to say, Joanne the intuitive was amazing. She was very personable, relatable and kind. We each had about 30 minutes with her, in which she took time reading our energies, answering questions and guiding us through what she was feeling. I really enjoyed my time with her and took a number of things away from the experience. She was pretty spot on with many of her thoughts and readings, despite my “skepticism”. I would definitely see someone like her again and highly recommend it for anyone who is interested.        After Joanne left, we continued to enjoy our snacks and sangria before making our way to down to the dock to meet Scotty. Scotty owns “Scotty’s scooters” and is a friend of Sheras. He kindly brought us on his boat to a spot near them off of Keats Island. This is where locals dock their boats, cook, drink and enjoy the outdoors. The weather was just perfect and I love a good boat ride! We met a few other people and enjoyed drinks, homemade sausages and freshly caught prawns. The prawns were the best I had ever tasted- they were so fresh and didn’t even need the melted butter that accompanied them. After enjoying our drinks and dinner, we hopped back on the boat home. The night was still young so we headed over to Kate’s house to hang out for a bit. They have one of the most beautiful designed homes I have ever seen. It was farmhouse meets industrial chic, all wrapped into one! I hung out with their adorable and precocious munchkins for a bit before we all enjoyed some more bevvys by the fire.
Sunday May 12, 2019         Yay for a bit of a sleep in! We didn’t have a strict itinerary today so we enjoyed a bit of a sleep in before brunch at the Gum boot. The Gum boot is a delicious and popular restaurant in Roberts Creek. Shera and I waited a bit to get seated but my meal did not disappoint. Since it was mother’s day, we enjoyed MUMosas overlooking the nice grass area. Shera had a game of baseball to get to so I hung out and enjoyed that. Her teammates were all super friendly and were pretty decent players. After the game, we hiked around Smugglers Cove and enjoyed the lush greenery, arbutus trees and the views of the Georgia Strait. Since the Raptors were playing (this was the infamous Kawai shot night), we headed over to the lighthouse in Sechelt for dinner and beers to enjoy during the game. Shera’s baseball team had another game so we went and cheered them on for that before heading home to watch an amazing sunset on the beach amongst the driftwood. Sunset is my favourite time of the day and the BC sunset did not disappoint!
Monday May 13th, 2019         Since I love my sleep, Shera went into the city before I did on my second last morning in BC. I lounged around Gibsons and enjoyed coffee at the Beachcomber. I took the bus over to the ferry and met Shera at the ferry Terminal. Today we were going to be proper tourists and check out the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain (which we were supposed to do on Friday but thank goodness we didn’t as my legs wouldn’t have made it). The Capilano Suspension bridge is one of Vancouver’s most popular tourist attractions. At over 130 years old from its inception the “Kia’palano” (meaning beautiful river) bridge was named after a great Squamish Chief who lived in the area in the early 1800s. While the bridge has had many improvements and enlargements over the years, the 70 meter high and 140 meter long suspension bridge has magical views over the Capilano River. The park also has a learning centre, treetop walk and a cliffwalk, all surrounded by lush, beautiful forest. While it was very cool and beautiful, it was super touristy and a bit pricey ($54 a person) for what it all is. I would still highly recommend it (or the cheaper/free suspension bridge called Lynn Canyon.          Next stop- Grouse Mountain! Grouse Mountain is just a short drive from the Bridge. We made sure to check our bags and waterbottles before our hike so we would be prepared. Grouse Mountain is considered the Peak of Vancouver at 1200 meters high.  It is a popular ski destination for those in the area during the winter but is probably even more popular in the summer. Nicknamed “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster” the over 2800 steps leading the way up over 800 meters  (about 2.9 km) to the top are no easy feat. Every year, there are thousands who come do the “Grouse Grind”. There is even a contest to see who can climb it the most in 24 hours. I am not the most avid hiker (fake it till you make it) but am probably more experienced than the average person (cough Kilimanjaro, cough). Despite my previous experience, I suffered supremely on this “hike”. I would call this more of steep steps. Being 5”2, I am very disadvantaged when it comes to high steps and had a hard time keeping up with Sheras long, gazelle-like legs. I think it ended up taking us almost an hour and a half to do the whole thing, which was longer than I had anticipated. I mean, I wasn’t in the best shape of my life but didn’t think it would be so hard! For reference, the top time of the day was around 25 minutes… I definitely suggest doing the Grouse Grind but make sure you are prepared both physically and mentally- and have lots of water and snacks!          Once atop the 2830, steps, we ate our snacks and grabbed a coffee before paying the $15 to take the gondola back down. You can’t actually climb back down-which is probably for the best. The gondola is beautiful and well worth the climb. The sights of the city and area are amazing. After our hike, we headed to the ferry Terminal and back to Gibsons. We were the only patrons at Drift Restaurant in town and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It’s too bad the weather wasn’t cooperating because their patio was awesome and had great views of the water. After full tummies, we headed home for a good nights sleep.
Tuesday May 14th 2019          Sadly, it was my last day in BC. Shera and I hopped on the 0830 ferry and picked up Shera’s car that was being looked at in North Van. She dropped me off in downtown after saying our sad but so happy and grateful goodbyes. She had a busy day at work as the new school semester had just started. Since I had my suitcase, I found a post office that stored bags for the day and paid to have my suitcase and large backpack stored. It is an ingenious idea and worth every penny, especially since it was raining and I did not want to be carting my stuff all around town.       After dropping my stuff off, I made my way back over towards Stanley Park and walked in a different way to the Aquarium. Since it was pouring rain, I figured the aquarium was a great place to visit. I was the only adult above the age of 21 there without a child but still had a great time. I learned a lot about sealions during their live show and checked out the many different eco systems they have set up at the Aquarium.        Once I had seen all of the sea creatures, it dawned on me that I hadn’t had much seafood yet this trip, which is sacrilegious when visiting any coastal city. I wandered around downtown and settled on Fanny’s Oysters, which ended up being a fabulous choice! I had several different types of oysters and some that was almost as good as the oysters. Anyone that knows me, knows I can eat my weight in Oysters but I limited myself to a dozen and kept on my downtown stroll. I stopped into Steamworks for a beer in Gastown before grabbing my stuff at the post office and jumping on the train to the airport. The train ride was about 30 mins and seamless. The airport seems so much smaller in comparison to Pearson so getting around it made more sense. I had a lounge pass and was super excited to use it! I enjoyed dinner, drinks and a nice hot shower before getting ready for my redeye back home. I managed to sleep well on my flight home and took a morning bus back into Hamilton.         While there are many places I would still like to see in BC, I really think I did a good job of hitting a bunch of important spots on the trip. Most importantly, I got to spend some quality time with my girl Shera and get a glimpse into the amazing life she has built for herself on the west coast. I see many more visits to come and cannot wait for them!

Futaleufu to Termas de Puyuhuapi (Chile). 2/8/17
Due to known construction issues on this leg, we were requested to leave no later than 7 AM. Today we were planning a day mostly of ripio (unpaved) down to the Chilean coast and to join the well known Austral Highway, Route 7. A small breakfast was prepared by the Hosteria, basically a plate of meat and cheese along with some bread and jam and of course coffee. Today was a really fun day. I didn't grow up on dirt as many riders have, but I have gained a good deal of confidence riding the gravel/dirt on this trip. Riding with a more experienced rider has helped me a lot on this surface. We had a couple surprises of the animal variety on the bike today as we descended past our section of the Futaleufu river we rode yesterday. Coming around a curve or two we encountered a small herd of sheep and through the day, cows were grazing alongside the road with one herd taking up about a third of the road. One chicken rarely escaped death at the front end of Rod's Africa Twin. We saw an older gentleman riding his horse on the highway and we asked if we could take his picture and he obliged our request. At the junction of Rt. 235 and Rt. 7 there were a whole lot of hitchhikers. We have consistently seen a lot of that throughout Chile. We had a plan to meet at 12:30 at the main square of Puyuhuapi. The two of us arrived first and it was only 10. Unfortunately this town is very small, all torn up and the rain had started to fall. Zero restaurants were open but we found a mini market and I got a coke and a package of "donuts" which were actually chocolate covered cookies. We had a snack under a cover by the waterfront. There is a tsunami warning sign there as the area is quite seismically active and this town sits at the northernmost arm of a narrow bay. The type of topography and shoreline can amplify the magnitude of a tsunami. Also, until the 70's this town was only accessible by boat or plane. Lots of dirt in this town and it seemed quite poor. Perhaps the terrible condition of the roads due to construction swayed this impression. The policeman asked 9 of our 11 bikes to move off the street (mine wasn't one of them) and I got the impression that may have been the most excitement he had all day! As we rode south on Rt.7, we would transition from new pavement to ripio. You can tell they are making a large effort to pave this Austral Highway. Our driver said we are fortunate to ride here now as in a number of years it will all be paved. We met a guy in a bike from Boston who was pedaling his way hundreds of miles down the coast. I also spoke to a couple of French guys at the tiny gas station on BMW's who were in a group of four bikes on a 2 1/2 month journey from Brazil to Ushuaia, our destination. Although this section of the Andes has some rugged peaks (some look as if the rocky spires are the result of some crazy version of sand art, when you drip the water/sand solution and form narrow towers) overall they are more green and tree covered than sheer. We have seen more and more snow due to our increasing southern latitude but atop the mountains. After meeting up around 12, we proceeded towards the ferry scheduled to take us to the Puyuhuapi Lodge and thermal springs. The 4 or 5 construction zones made the 12km trip take about an hour. We pulled into a parking lot and grabbed our bags. We left everything but our clothes and boarded two ferries to the resort which sits in an inlet on the other side of the bay. Basically southwest of Puyuhuapi but no roads are cut here and boat is the easiest way to arrive. This Lodge is by far the nicest place so far. Greeted with champagne, porters handle the baggage, a full spa, a number of pools, natural hot springs at different temperatures and first class accommodations. The restaurant also provides delicious and beautifully prepared dishes. I donned my bathrobe and set out for the hot springs after a tasty lunch in which one of my courses was an interesting dish of wild hare, simmered in its own juices. I figured I wouldn't have too many chances to try that. There was a path to the left to "canelos" which my Google translator app not so helpfully translated as canelos. I took that path and walked more then 10 minutes on a we'll maintained path by a series of waterfalls as the geothermally heated water cascades down the hill. All the hot water here is heated courtesy of Mother Earth and her "ring of fire" magma close to the surface. The cold water is delicious and also right from the spring. I turned back and found the hot pools and the cafe. A few of our group were in the body temperature pool (37°C) and hung out there for a while. Later I was alternating between the hot (40°C) pool and took a dip in the sea also to cool off. We had off and on drizzle today with the green mountains shrouded in mist. Looks a bit like BC especially with the dense rain forest type vegetation including ferns. Dinner with the Aussies was fun and delicious. The Lodge has no wifi nor cell signal. There is one computer for guest use, however as most of my accounts including this (Tumblr) and email and Facebook all have been additionally secured with two-step verification I am SOL. Since I can't get the verification text on my phone I am unable to sign in to any of my accounts so I am locked out. When I get on wifi hopefully tomorrow in Coyhaique I can post this and the pictures.

Devote a day to Victoria's picturesque Inner Harbour.
Here you'll find popular sites like the Parliament Buildings and the Royal British Columbia Museum, as well as cafes and restaurants boasting wonderful views of the water. Here are the Top 10 things to do in Victoria & Vancouver Island.
1. Inner Harbour
Inland Port is Victoria's main tourist district. Countless cafes and restaurants line up on the sidewalk and provide the perfect spot to enjoy an afternoon cup of tea while keeping your eyes peeled off for whales to play in open water. For an even more captivating scene, come back in the evening, when Parliament House is lit up.
2. The Butchart Gardens
Today, more than 1 million people stop each year to walk along the flowery streets of the hotel, which houses more than 900 variants. There is also a carousel and boat tour available on site. Butchart Gardens are open daily at 8:45 or 9:00 and close at different times depending on the season. Admission ranges from CA $ 18.75 (about $ 14.50) to CA $ 33.80 (about $ 26) for adults, depending on the season.
3. Parliament Buildings
British Columbia's Parliament Building is very hard to miss. Their neoclassical buildings with their impressive blue domes face Victoria's famous Fairmont Empress hotel and provide a great backdrop for a stroll in the Harbor of the Inland, especially is at night when the facade is illuminated. But if you want to take a closer look at the building (dating back to 1898), the parliamentary process and the history of the province, many tourists recommend visiting, talking about well-informed guides. If you happen to be here when Congress is in session, consider participating in one of the Legislative Council debates. You will find a schedule of discussion topics on the Parliament Calendar.
4. Royal British Columbia Museum
The exhibition includes tribal artifacts from the first nations, exhibits natural history and even replicas of colonial settlements. Recent visitors have said the museum is a must-see while in Victoria as it provides an in-depth look at the geography of the area and the indigenous people. Reviewers also praised the layout of the museum, which is chronological. Some critics even say this is one of the "best museums" they've ever visited.
5. Goldstream Provincial Park
Between October and December, chum, coho and chinook salmon can be seen leaping upstream to their ancestral spawning beds. When you need a break, stop for a picnic. Admission is free unless you're planning to camp. The entrance to the day-use area is at the junction of Trans-Canada Highway No. 1 and Finlayson Arm Road. Visit the BC Parks website for more information.
6. Mount Washington Alpine Resort
7. Fairmont Empress
Challenging Parliament Houses from across the Inland Port is the elegant Fairmont Empress hotel. Built in the early 20th century, the Queen is one of the region's oldest hotels. But while the interior is worth a photo or two, the main reason to visit this giant hotel is for tea. Although most Victorian visitors enjoy high tea at the Empress due to the high price, some say that the experience is worth the money. For more information, visit the hotel's website.
8. Victoria Whale Watching Tours
In addition, you will benefit from knowledgeable guides, who have access to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve, located in the southernmost part of Vancouver Island on the Pacific coast. There are a range of tours available - some more intimate than others - but most last three to four hours. Some critics say they have lost the number of whales they see, while others are particularly impressed with guides who keep a respectful distance from animals and provide plenty of Information for tour people.
9. Cowichan Valley
British Columbia is peppered with vineyards. The best way to get a feel for this part of the island is to stop at several vineyards for a tasting. Many travel experts also recommend bringing a bike so that you can cover more ground without confining yourself to the car. There's also a more direct route via the Trans-Canada Highway that takes about 45 minutes. If you'd rather travel by boat, you can make your north way to Brentwood Bay and catch the Brentwood Bay/Mill Bay ferry to Cowichan.
10. Craigdarroch Castle
To sample the Victorian high life, head about a mile east of the Inner Harbour to Craigdarroch Castle, a National Historic Site. Admission costs CA$14.25 (about $11) for adults and CA$5 (about $4) for children ages 6 to 12. Although there are no guided tours, admission includes an audio guide.
The above are places we think will bring you unforgettable experiences. Hope that makes you happy and above is Victoria & Vancouver Island. San Juan Islands / Victoria BC - Day Eight - Wednesday August 21, 2019
We were blessed with 7 days of amazing weather, but all good things must end. Without rain, we wouldn’t enjoy the sunny days as much, right? Plus it was great to be around 100+ like-minded souls who don’t mind cycling in the rain.
Today was a transition day, ending the PAWs adventure and off on our own again. We had breakfast and set out for the 20 mile ride back to Sidney to catch the noon ferry back to Anacortes. It had rained off and on for a few hours, and we left Victoria in “heavy mist,” not exactly rain. Back out onto the Lochside Trail, which we now knew backwards and forwards quite well. I was worried about some spots being slippery (metal bridge deck and others made of wooden planks), but it was ok. About five miles out, the mist turned to actual rain, but was warm enough to keep the misery factor low.
We got to the ferry dock, showed our passports and bought tickets - plenty of time (an hour before sailing). I’d packed my larger backpack with layers of warm clothes wrapped in plastic bags so I shed a wet layer for a snuggly warm layer and that was great. We huddled inside the gift store and bought more hot drinks, then the clerk kicked all of us “bikers” outside! It had stopped raining so we willingly moved outside and chatted with a neat couple from North Carolina.
We’ve enjoyed being with this group so much. As I’ve said, we’re like-minded, and it’s been so much fun to connect with so many different people. Here are the stats of the attendees:
107 riders from 22 states (IL, WI, OH and MN being highest numbers)
Age range: one person under 40, and one over 80; biggest numbers in the range 60-69 years old ... lots of senior discounts on the ferry!
59 ladies, 48 men (mainly couples but several groups of lady friends).
The ferry boarded and left just after noon. We were last to board, which means the good bench seats were taken. We found a good spot with enough empty chairs to hang our wet jackets. I changed into dry yoga pants - temporary luxury. We played cribbage, ate soup, napped, and soon we were arriving in Anacortes (about 2:30pm).
We were the last to leave the ferry, which meant long line at US customs. It was raining again, but still about 60 degrees so not too cold. It took us 30 minutes to clear customs, then a 5 mile ride back to the Marina motel. I was a bit anxious about getting to our connection, and the rain was heavier, as was the traffic - misery factor of 8. As Jeff likes to say, you get to a point where you don’t get any wetter. I was there.
Arrived at the Marina with many others that were also in a hurry and anxious about connections. Many were scheduled to catch the Airporter Shuttle and fly out yet tonight! Jeff had brought his pedal wrench so he extracted our pedals, lights and mirrors from the loaner bikes while I collected our bags. We summoned a Uber driver to bring us back to the ferry dock, and tried to not leave a puddle in his car! Back to the ferry 10 minutes before they called for pedestrians to board - whew! Time to change into another stash of warm dry clothes - felt like heaven. Relaxed and snacked on our hour cruise back to Friday Harbor.
I’d booked a hotel close to the harbor, Friday Harbor House so we wouldn’t have to schlep our bags far and we’ll also be close to the meeting point for our upcoming paddle adventure. It felt so different leaving the ferry this time, knowing the layout of the town and exactly where we were going. This was the smallest room so far of this adventure, by the time we washed out our wet and dirty gear and unpacked our 4 bags, we had the place looking like our usual adventure travel hillbilly style!
Got settled, then remembered this is a town that closes down early (and much activity around the ferry schedule as many just are here for the day I think). We walked a few blocks to the San Juan Brewery, where we were delighted to find it was open mike night, so we enjoyed various levels of entertainment while we devoured a pizza and beet salad, washed down with some Black Boar Porters.

BC Ferries to Invest USD 3 Bn in Fleet, Terminals
Under the 12-year capital plan, BC Ferries will upgrade its fleet and terminals, introduce alternative energy sources, and invest in its Fleet Maintenance Facility.
“BC Ferries will standardize its assets, improve interoperability and address growing demand in a sustainable and ecological manner,” the company said.
On September 28, 2018, BC Ferries filed its Performance Term Five Submission to the independent British Columbia Ferries Commissioner. The purpose of the submission is to provide information to assist the Commissioner in establishing price caps for all regulated routes as specified in the Coastal Ferry Services Contract between BC Ferries and the Province of British Columbia for the period April 1, 2020 – March 31, 2024.
One of the key elements of the submission is the company’s capital plan, which details plans to invest more than CAD 3.9 billion.
“Our capital plan will help to ensure a sustainable, future-ready, efficient marine transportation system, while delivering an exceptional and affordable customer-focused travel experience,” Mark Collins, BC Ferries’ President and CEO, commented.
“In developing our plan, we recognize that decisions we make today must consider the way people will travel tomorrow. We are planning for a more resilient ferry service that takes into account the energy transition to a lower carbon future and that can address customers’ interests in the areas of reliability, affordability and choice,” Collins added.
BC Ferries recently released its second quarter results for the three months ended September 30, 2018. The company’s net earnings for the second quarter of fiscal 2019 were CAD 90.9 million, compared to net earnings of CAD 98.4 million for the same quarter of the previous year. Year-to-date, net earnings were CAD 96.9 million, CAD 18.9 million lower than in the same period in the prior year. The decrease in net earnings is primarily due to initiatives that reduced fares as well as the addition of more sailings at popular sailing times which increased operating expenses.
“To provide our customers with the service they expect from BC Ferries, we added sailings where possible on a variety of routes and extended schedules to meet demand,” Collins explained.
“BC Ferries provided 288 (640 year-to-date) additional round trips compared to the same time last year throughout the system and adjusted the schedules for the routes operating out of Horseshoe Bay terminal,” he continued.
BC Ferries provides ferry transportation services to the west coast of Canada on 25 routes, currently supported by 35 vessels and 47 terminals, and also manages other remote routes through contracts with independent operators.

oof
so the last few days have been a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts
i’m not doing good right now
my mental health is at a low.  not the lowest its been, but definitely very low.  i’ve been eating bad, drinking soda, and honestly not doing anything for my physical or mental health lately.
idk, everything is just too much yanno? like we’re getting ready to move across state to a big city (but bubblegum your dream is to live in a big city. i know i know but it’s scary) and start college and stuff. and it’s all freaking me out quite a bit. like i know it’ll be good for me and that this change is going to be amazing, but up until it happens, it’s just gonna be really scary.
on a side note, i did get a job at a giant streaming service that has an office within the city i’ll be living in and going to school in, and it’s full time. that’s gonna be great, but i do feel bad bc my bosses are trying to get me a transfer to another one of our stores but this place pays better and i’ll have a very set schedule. and as much as i love the people, i’m just not passionate about what i do anymore. plus i need something with less stress because of school. i’m determined to do good today.
girlfriend and i went with their mom (who doesn’t know we’re dating) to go shoe shopping for them. i was a little sad because i wish my mom could just shell out money to buy me shoes when i needed them, but also happy for my girlfriend for getting a good pair of shoes today. plus i got shoes anyways. we went to my job because they were having a shoe clearance event and i got a pair of $75.00 converse for only $20.00. they’re so cute too. they’re denim with little daisies and the hippieness is my aesthetic.
however, i decided to wear them when my friends and i all went to the carnival and that was a terrible idea. never wear new shoes to the carnival. don’t do it. d o n ‘ t  d o  i t .  so anyways, yeah, now my feet hurt.
that carnival though. i had fun but it didn’t start out fun. girlfriend had a panic attack on one of the rides but we couldn’t just make it stop so we went to cool down and i felt really bad because i felt like they only went on the ride for me. then we all went on the ferris wheel but then i had a panic attack and so did my girlfriend so we just kinda sat in fear for ten minutes lol. and then, best of all (fucking sarcasm), i had a panic attack on the slides. the SLIDES. of all things, one of my favorite things to do, and i had a panic attack because it was windy and high up and the thing was rocking and i have a terrible fear of heights. so then the carny came and he was making fun of me and told me i was annoying and pathetic and made my panic attack worse by shaking the damn thing so i got really scared and when i finally got down, people were laughing at me and yeah i feel really really really stupid over that but my legs are literally still shaking.
anywho, today hasn’t been bad but bad thoughts still preside in my head and it kind of sucks ass. like i’m just trying to have a great day with my friends and my girlfriend and my head is telling me they all hate me.
so how’s your day/night going

We recently had the opportunity to chat with David Smith, an agent out of Langley, British Columbia, Canada. David generously shared with us his perspective on how to win listings and how to work effectively with sellers, and he gave us some insights into what he does every day to keep his sales momentum going.
What are the three most effective things you do every day to grow your business?
1. Get face-to-face or “belly-to-belly” with someone. I love hearing people’s stories, what makes them tick, what they’re passionate about, what their struggles are. The fact this occasionally benefits my business is a wonderful bi-product! In a crowded real estate environment, it’s easy for Realtors to become commodified, but our personalities are what really cause us to stand out — nobody can get a sense of who we are if we never sit down with them.
2. I do exactly what my google calendar tells me to do — every day. My schedule tends to develop in the days and weeks prior to the present, so I know each morning I just have to open it up, look at what’s there, and execute on it.
What your lead follow-up is missing
Tom Ferry says love your leads and they’ll love you back READ MORE
I also record everything I do as I go, that way I can data mine my calendar to see what’s working and what’s not, both in my business and personal life. At all times, I can tell you how many family dinners and bedtimes I was home for that week, how many work hours I put in, what my weight was doing and how many steps I took daily, among a host of other metrics.
Over time, this helps me track trends, both positive and negative, and allows me to tweak different elements of my schedule to better reflect where I’d like to be.
3. Not to get too “woowoo,” but I do attempt to meditate daily. I tend to be a bit of a people-pleaser and, in spite of my best efforts, I don’t always succeed. That can too often lead to disproportionate worry and anxiety. I’m a baby in this realm, and still depend on a few meditation aids, like the Calm App.
After a few days of meditation in succession I notice a drastic improvement in my resiliency, which helps me continue to focus on the people in front of me in that moment, which is essential in this often stressful business.

David Smith: The Advocate Agent (Inman Connect San Francisco 2017)
What tactics do you use for driving referrals and winning listing presentations?
I was recently in a listing presentation where I knew I was competing with more experienced, more local agents. Of course I prepared in advance by researching the property and market, which proved beneficial as I presented to the family, but it seems to have been my demeanor toward an elderly relative involved in the transaction that led to my “winning the listing.”
It was important to her that we acknowledge the fact that she had been able to care for her ailing husband until just a few days before he passed away, and she needed to hear if there was a way to market the property to a family in a similar situation.
I had a couple creative ideas that could potentially identify such a buyer, and just this small effort to patiently listen and then thoughtfully respond seemed to make all the difference for the family.
For the most part, our clients want to know less about our awards, marketing strategies and social media influence, and more that we will listen to them attentively and respond thoughtfully. As it turns out, treating clients this way tends to build appreciation and trust, which occasionally “drives referrals” — bonus!
How do you handle working with sellers on pricing?
We’re in a very strong seller’s market up here in Metro Vancouver, with sales ratios often over 100 percent and an average time on the market of one week. In that environment, pricing at or slightly below market value is the ideal strategy as the best price will inevitably be reached in a competitive multiple-offer situation.
Overpricing leads to the home potentially sitting on the market, causing unnecessary concern that there may be issues with the property or that the seller is unreasonable. It may eventually sell, but it will sell for less than could have been achieved by pricing at market value and driving the property into multiples.
Most clients understand this reasoning, but some haven’t sold in a seller’s market before and are used to a buyer’s market with sale prices generally being lower than list prices. Such clients are often concerned they will “have to” accept an offer lower than list price, which simply requires some encouragement that they need not accept any offer, never mind one they are unhappy with.
I usually come prepared with as many comparables and statistics as I can, and often “open up the back end of the MLS [multiple listing service]” on my laptop with the client to show them exactly what those comparables are and where the statistics are coming from.

David Smith, The Local: Cloverdale Community Kitchen
What’s the best piece of advice you ever heard?
“Unrealistic expectations are just planned disappointments.” This is true both in life and real estate. I tend to be someone with very high expectations of myself and of others, and those expectations often cross the line into being unrealistic. Almost without fail when that happens, I am disappointed and even resentful at times toward others who fail to meet my unfair expectations.
I’m very guilty of not heeding this advice, but when I do, it sure benefits me.
In the real estate world, I remember one client who had been told she could achieve an entirely unrealistic price for her home. The night we signed an offer, which represented a record for the area, I asked her how she felt and her word was “disappointed.” This really saddened me, as we never want to hear that from our clients, but it was based purely on that original unrealistic expectation, and I had to comfort myself with the understanding that those unrealistic expectations were just planned disappointments.
If an agent should stop doing one thing today, what would it be?
Making ourselves the center of attention.
A significant portion of agents are naturally extroverted with more than a touch of narcissism, and I find myself in that breed. One way I’ve tried to combat the shadow side of that personality type is by finding other people and organizations I can wholeheartedly promote. Instead of constantly advocating for myself, I lean toward advocating for others — whether it be refugees, a local community kitchen, the brewery down the street or simply my clients.
It’s not that difficult, it just requires us to look beyond ourselves and to become truly passionate about what others are trying to achieve. Sometimes this even means publicly celebrating another local Realtor for their advocacy work, and doing so without fear that it will somehow negatively impact our business.
I’m so proud to serve alongside some Realtors in my community who are using their platforms to build schools in the Dominican Republic, organize fundraising music festivals, support women’s shelters and so much more. Some days when I’m feeling insecure or worried, this can be a discipline, but with practice it’s become one of the most fulfilling elements of my life and business.
