Reading the Reckoning of Roku, still not gonna sway from my narrative of Roku being one of the chumpiest avatars in the last few generations lmao

mini reckoning of roku rant (mild spoilers)

my main gripe with the reckoning of roku is that literally every character in that novel was more interesting and compelling than roku. which I guess doesn't make it a bad novel, it was just bit unsatisfying as someone who liked roku in the original series.

gyatso was great, very fun, very compelling. malaya - loved her, she was really interesting. really liked what ribay did with ta min! i think she's being set up to be a key part of roku's team avatar in an interesting way. not a lot to say on sister disha, kozaru or dalisay, they seemed like alright, decently interesting side characters, I'm sure there's interesting stuff going on in their lives, but the novel really isn't about them so whatever.

sozin, though. well, he was awful. racist, conniving, paranoid. he sucked as much as you would expect him to, but also he was very compelling. there was a rebelliousness and air of mischief to him. him swiping roku's childhood journal as a gift for wan shi tong - very devious and wicked, but also funny as hell. and in general it just seemed like he was quite charismatic, very confident, knew what to say, ambitious, driven. you know, the full evil dictator persona.

roku. hmm, roku honestly was just very nothing. he was very hesitant about being the avatar, which is fair. lacked confidence in general. his main issue was supposed to be that he was biased towards the fire nation, which I think was a poor choice of topic to explore, because it isn't really anything new. we've seen avatar and the fire lord! we know roku spares sozin because of their past friendship and then regrets it when sozin kills him and starts the war.

f.c. yee's kyoshi novel was great because it subverted our perception of who kyoshi was as a person. it's so interesting how she started out as a rather unassuming maid to the 'avatar' because we expect her to be a total badass from the get-go. instead we see how the corrupt and unbalanced world that she lives in has shaped her into this paragon of justice who is feared as much as she is respected.

i think most atla fans perceive roku as a nice guy but ultimately a little useless because he didn't prevent the war from happening. and I think that's sort of how he was throughout this novel. not the evil, calculating bigot that sozin is, but also not smart enough to question his actions without gyatso's intervention.

yeah idk i wish the novel focused on something other than his loyalty to sozin, because it made the novel more about sozin than it did about roku. and yes these characters are very interlinked, but a novel about roku should feel like it's about roku! roku is an avatar that's overlooked by the fandom already and here, he felt pretty overlooked in his own story.
