Post Spartacus Sequel (or the very last scene of the sequel, I'm not picky)
Once you've crossed the Rhine into the free lands to the east, there is still a great deal of forest to journey through before you can rest. In the first valley, the first breath of true freedom, there is a small village and a large goat farm. The farm is situated on the western most edge of the village, the first thing visitors must pass. It is run by two men, one with a brand on his arm and hands scarred by Rome and the other from lands too far away. They greet all new travelers for anyone who approaches them from the west comes from Rome. For any Roman who finds their way to them, they are greeted with a swift end. For those fleeing Rome's might, they are greeted with warm smiles and rough Latin assuring them "you are safe. Rome has no place here."
#Spartacus#nagron#goat farm#ive been thinking about what I want from the newly announced sequel and ive decided i dont want nagron#at least not until the very end#bc I want them free from rome#and if the show is set in rome that means they can't be in it#but if the show still follows escaping slaves then they can be in at the end#to welcome others who escape romes grasp

I do love your takes because they mirror mine in a way, I am curious about your take on François relationship with Ludwig and partly with Antonio too. Alasdair is a free soul like him, there's not much to say about it there I think. Baby brother stole everything even the french menace and it bothers him but won't stop him. I do wonder about your take on Alfred's own relationship with Ludwig and the italian brothers. I hc he and the south get along really well but he clashes with North Italy bc he doesn't understand why Italy hides behind his airheadness. I know I'm in anon, sorry but I have many things on my mind and don't want to develop my own op right now bc it will take time to write it down
Ohh yess
Ok just a heads up, this is an expansion on the previous François post:
Ludwig and François have an interesting dynamic. At first glance it might seem like they are polar opposites in almost every aspect. And who knows that might be true, but there is an appeal to me of the sad depressed and drinking-wine-in-bathtub-at-3-am François calling up Ludwig just to chat and get reassurance that it'll be fine. Ludwig is young. He feels like he needs to prove himself on this old world continent. He feels the need to work more just to get to where the rest are. And as an economic powerhouse, he feels somewhat responsible for keeping the peace. Though, despite that, he is kind. And in the recent years (cough cough after Brexit cough cough gurgle fall over die) he and François have gotten close. As close as the ghosts of the past will allow, at least. So, if there is anyone willing to talk to, and even come over and make sure the Frenchman is not drowning in the bathtub or the wine, it's the german lad. Even if he's just sitting on the toilet, laptop on lap, doing work and listening to François' rants. It's the kinda dynamic François can relax in. He doesn't enjoy Ludwigs quiet company always, but it's a nice break from bickering with Arthur and debating with Alfred.
Antonio is a different story. They are very similar in their worldviews and mindsets. Two past empires grown up under Rome (more or less) and getting dunked on by the rat man extraordinaire and his big fat rat baby. If François is going to do dumb shit and get plastered in the town center, he's doing it with Antonio. Gil is also included. They are not the type of friends to talk about their feelings and go emotional on each other. But, naturally there is mutual respect and understanding. "The world has changed and its pace is too fast for us now."
Alasdair is someone who has seen and stood next to François for a very long time. I think he understands the inner workings of François better than most. And, in a certain way, better than even Arthur. From the fall of Rome to the 7 years war, Alasdair kept frequent contact with the man, both physical and if unable to visit, by letters. Alasdair is the one trapped between worlds and emotions after the Treaty of Versailles in 1763. Matthew, whom he adores so much, was abandoned by the man he deeply feels for. And in times like these it's very human to take sides, despite actively trying to understand each party. Alasdair chose Matthew. A boy he almost saw as his own. And François felt the shift. Less frequent letters and visits, as well as somewhat reserved communication when in person. They are still important to each other and always will be. But nations, in my hc are very human. I understand the appeal of making them non human eldritch beings, but i think they are very very human in their emotional and mental capacities and understandings of the world. Wiser and more experienced sure, but human non the less.
You also mentioned Alfred and the Italy bros. I'll do a separate post on their dynamic. However ye i do agree, Alfred and Romano are closer than Alfred and Feli. But what i will add is that Alfred doesn't dislike or find Feli off-putting due to the mask of airheadness. It's the fact that Alfred does the same and knows what it's used for and how it works that doesn't sit right with him. He knows the mask is a front for a sharp mind and knows that there is intelligence behind it.

Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as Romulus and Remus, as the founders of Rome - Toon History - History in Duckverse and Mouseverse - Happy Birthday to the Best City!
Yes, it's time to change my plans now with my new project called Toon Historia, also History in Duckverse and Mouseverse in which our famous cartoon and comic characters play famous historical figures and will play in important historical events . And first I drew Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Mickey Mouse as the founders of Rome, as Romulus and Remus. Romulus and Remus, according to Roman mythology and Roman tradition, were the sons of Rhea Sylvia and the god Mars and grandsons of King Numitor. Numitor's brother Amulius overthrew his brother and ordered the execution of his children, including the sons of Sylvia who were thrown into the Tiber River. However, according to legend, a she-wolf found them and raised them until the shepherd Faustulus came along and adopted them. Afterwards they grew up and when they heard the truth, they went to overthrow Amulius and succeeded and restored their grandfather Numitor to be king of the city of Alba. Afterwards, Romulus and Remus went to seven hills in the valley of the Tiber River and there on April 21, 753 BC they founded the eternal city, which will be called Rome. Yes, there was a conflict between the two in which Romulus killed his brother (a tragic event) and thus took the title of the first king of Rome.
Oswald and Mickey who were created by Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney in 1927 and 1928 also became the first Disney icons, however the conflict between Iwerks and Disney resulted in Oswald being part of Universal, until in 2006 Disney bought the rights to Oswald. Yes, that's why I drew Mickey and Oswald as Romulus and Remus, because of that parallel, but don't worry, Mickey won't kill his brother, even though mice and rabbits are not the same species, they are still considered brothers because of Epic Mickey. As Romulus and Remus were the founders of Rome, so Oswald and Mickey were the founders of the new world.
I drew this last year, but I waited for this moment to publish now and I drew it as a redraw from an illustration by Tancredi Scarpelli (1866–1937) for Storia d'Italia by Paolo Giudici (Nerbini, 1929). I drew Mickey in my own style, while I left the old look for Oswald, because I still like him better with dot eyes. And yes, I drew this on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the creation of Disney as well as the 75th anniversary of Topolino magazine, which is published in Italy, and the capital of Italy is definitely Rome. Yes, Rome, the eternal city and capital of one of the greatest empires and greatest civilizations of all time. As well as related to the birthday of the City of Rome, which is celebrated on April 21 every year. Happy Rome Day! Roma Aeterna!
I hope you like this drawing and this idea and if you want to support feel free to like and reblog this! I just ask that you don't copy my same ideas without mentioning me and without my permission. Thank you! Happy Rome Day, my favorite city in the world!

Do you have any headcanons for the canon pjoverse???
oh my GOD DO I?? I HAVE SO MANY it's hard to even keep track of them all bc tbh i forget which ones are canon or not canon
in general i've put a *lot* of my hc's into my fics, specifically my because i'm a mirrorball series which is basically my version of will's backstory (even though a large amount of it was disproved by tsats... i'm just ignoring that bc it's already engrained in my head even though i did enjoy tsats)
i also think i share quite a few of the popular hc's of the fandom, just because i'm actually pretty new to it (read the pjo series in like september of 2022 i think? and then hoo and toa immediately after) and i consume fandom content to an unhealthy extent
HOWEVER here are some things i feel very strongly about
will is a swiftie. i think this is canon bc rick mentioned it during the tsats book tour i think?? or maybe cotg?? not sure but i DO think he said it at some point
and also his favorite album is fearless like he's that album's number one stan im sorry there's no other answer
nico can cook like rlly well
LEO NICO AND WILL FRIENDSHIP i know that leo lives at the waystation now. but. BUT. i'd like to think that he'd visit chb every once in a while and they'd be pretty good friends
adding on to that, aroace leo. caleo what? nope. leo is aroace and he was in denial and i actually wrote a whole fic about it because i just feel very VERY strongly about this
i just love the idea that even before toa, apollo was more present in his kids' lives than other gods. like, showing up in dreams and stuff. even if it came from a different purpose, like wanting to show off his poetry or music or whatever, he wasn't completely absent from their lives
i very much like the idea of will and nico sort of stepping up to be the "leaders"-ish of chb once percabeth leave for new rome. i mean, will already sort of is one with him being the head medic and also having seniority over a lot of the campers, and nico being a child of the big three like percy
percabeth returning to chb to create a sort of new rome type place for older demigods to live!! so they do not feel like they're going to die young immediately when arriving!!! bc they are children!! and deserve to live long lives!!!
i have a *lot* of thoughts about will and his trauma, but one of the main things i believe about him is that his fatal flaw is putting others before him and overworking himself. i think that being pushed into the head medic position from such a young age sort of emphasized this, though i also think (from my ideas of his childhood) that he was kind of always taught to put other people and other jobs at a higher priority than himself
nico dies first. i know i was just talking about them living long lives and i think that ends up being true, but also nico is a demigod child of hades and i think around his 30s would already be way longer than anyone would expect. anyway, i think that he dies first, simply because i cannot put that boy through any more, and i know i could say the same thing about will after having lost so much as well, but i think that the idea of nico being right at the entrance of the underworld by the river styx to welcome will once he dies (bc nico's the ghost king/prince of the underworld and isn't confined to elysium) is a very comforting thought
those are the main things i can think of right now just off the top of my head, but if there's any specific parts of canonverse that you'd like my thoughts about, feel free to ask! this didn't really cover a lot of like the general pjo/hoo timeline and it was mainly solangelo centric but likeee these are just things i thought of first! thank u for the ask!!

This year, between now and March 14th, read a bit about Caesar (go to Wikipedia, they give a solid overview) before you stab him, instead of relying on the the Shakespeare "for his ambition I slew him." His ambition was feeding people, giving them enrichment, using public lands to build housing. (Also started his career as a prosecutor hunting down white collar corruption, not those who stole to feed themselves.) He was working on a plan to build a rival to the library of Alexanderia. They literally rooted and tried to hunt down the conspirators in the street bc Caesar was always aimed at taking power from the Senate but not for him, for the people. He could have crushed opposition when he returned and instead only brought one Legion across the Rubicon bc he didn't want a civil war in Rome.
Dictator has bad connotations now, but then it was a normal position in Rome -- during times of stress (the one was bc everyone was starving and there was huge unrest), a guy would be named dictator for a decade -- he got the grain moving and fed people plus the other stuff.
He got Cleopatra pregnant and it was used to start rumors he intended to make himself dictator for life and then have that inherited by their child, except there's no evidence he actually wanted ANY of that.
Oh and Brutus? His father had been away on campaign when his mother got pregnant and she was having an affair with 15 year old Caesar. Both Caesar and the mother believed Brutus to be his son and he'd been made aware of that forever. Caesar did not claim him as he had the legal father, husband of his mother happy to claim him, however Caesar shepherded his entire politic career, he was only in the Senate bc of Caesar.
In fact when those opposing Caesar fled when he crossed the Rubicon, Brutus was one of them. Caesar hunted them down but with instructions to not kill Brutus -- when he was captured, Caesar simply took him back to Rome, set him free, and put his ass back in the Senate.
In some reports he fought back until he saw Brutus at which point he pulled his cloak over his face and let them kill him bc he felt he must have failed a man he believed to be his son so badly that Brutus would do this. "Et tu, Brute?" hits different now huh?
And Brutus was the most easily manipulated moron to ever breathe, in that none of this was secret and the conspirators used his resentments over nothing to get him to betray Caesar bc he had Daddy issues.
Think twice before you stab, friends.

the entitlement of some of your requesters being like 🤨☝🏼 but how will we KNOW if our stories are being written vs if they were deleted vs if they’re rejected but I didn’t see bc I took one glance at your blog and didn’t see it written yet! Or to call you rude every single time someone just spams you with asks with no regard for your personal boundaries.
guys she does this for free, IF your request is nice enough to inspire Mei’s beautiful mind then you will be granted a lil fic. She does not owe you anything. I want you all to hear that. She chooses to be nice and fulfil most of her requests, but you do not get to be a giant whiny baby when you’re unsure where your request is. Have patience, or write it your damn self if you need it so bad, just please stop treating her like a machine.
Again, mei is not paid. It is not her job to fulfil your requests, nor is it your right to have them filled. That is a privilege and I wish more of you could be grateful if/when you do get them filled. play nice, please.
grabbing your face aggressively in my hands and tongue kissing you
i have it in my request rules that requesting something twice is something i really don't enjoy from people, it honestly makes me want to write the fic less 😭 but it sometimes feels like kind of a loophole when people ask whether i remember getting their specific request or not !! i don't really like that either, 'cause chances are if you read my guidelines and i haven't answered your ask saying no, then it's just waiting to be written, because there are a lot of requests waiting to be written. i just ask for patience if you request from me because rome's right and i'm not a machine that can whip up a fic five minutes after i get the request, i put my time and care into what i write and i'm very lucky to have all of you giving me scrumptious ideas but there's only so much i can do in one day so please be patient with me! i understand your eagerness to see your prompt written, and i'm flattered that you're so excited to see what I can do with your idea, but writing takes time. it might take two days, it might take a week, it might take a month, hell sometimes i drudge up requests from last year to work with once they finally strike my inspiration. i understand that not everyone has that patience, and chances are your request will be written sooner than later, but please don't be upset with me if it's not hot off the press 12 hours after you sent it to me. i'm a human being who's enrolled in college and i have chores and other hobbies and daily-life things to do, so i write what I can and if I can write something for you, i hope you enjoy it. as devoted as i am to this blog and all of you that are here with me, this is my hobby, not my job, and I do this for fun in my free time, so please help me keep it fun. thank you <3

roman roy and fleabag parallels
hi. so, the worms in my brain got a little (very) out of hand and this post is a result of it👍
let's talk about the line "i dont know what to do with all the love i have for her i dont know where to put it." fleabag as a character is deeply, incredibly flawed. she's broken, depressed, self-destructive; i could go on and on. to me, the show was essentially about love and grief and being able to find support in the people around you, and coming to terms with the fact that there are in fact, people that love you and that you deserve to be loved. fleabag thinks she's "greedy, perverted, selfish, apathetic, cynical and depraved" and yeah, she is, but she's also trying her damned best to get through life goddamit. roman, my precious failbaby, my son, he literally thinks of himself as unlovable, thinks he deserves being hit because he's "annoying." the core of roman's self-hate stems from the abuse he suffered as a child (and continues to), all those years that he spent trying to please a father who thought there was something wrong with him. he's a cruel, evil guy (first time we see that on screen was the baseball game where he promised that kid 1 mil and then proceeded to tear the cheque in front of his eyes) and yeah, he too, is "greedy, perverted, selfish, apathetic, cynical and depraved."
"i think you know how to love better than any of us that's why you find it all so painful." phoebe waller-bridge why would you do this to me. do i even have to elaborate on this line? fleabag holds so much love in her she doesn't know what to do with it she wants to be loved but doesn't want to go through the terrible ordeal of being known, of being seen, her boyfriend literally told her "don't make me hate you, loving you is hard enough as it is", the priest's speech on love, his decision to choose to stay or leave her and he chose the former !!!! her relationship with her sister, how claire loves her but doesn't see her, not the way the priest did. just. yeah. rome. he has so, so much love to give. i think out of all the characters on succ, he's the one vulnerable enough to say something like "i don't know dad, love?" like??? and that scene where he asks greg to get him one of logan's sweater, something that smells like him?? how he's the one who initiates hugs?? "hey can we do the hug-y thing"??????????? ARHJHJEFKHDFS im not going to elaborate on the love he has for logan or his siblings bc there are sooo many posts that do it better than i could, but essentially, just like fleabag, roman wants to be loved but he doesn't think of himself as deserving of it.
their relationship with sex. it's so different but also not?? my friend phrased it for me so im just going to paste that over here (my fave part about this is the fact that they literally haven't watched succession but figured all this out from whatever i've told them HAH)
feel free to interact w this post and elaborate on this more!!
how they blame themselves for the death of the person they loved (logan and boo), although in rome's case it's kinda funny in a tragic way if him calling logan a cunt is what killed logan.
how they use humor as a coping mechanism, how they deal with guilt.
something something their relationship with their sibling/s too.
and that is all for today, thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Hi can I ask a few questions about lent? You can ignore this if not. I am not religious at all and would like to try and observe this year.
From my understanding lent has already started but orthodox lent is this march- can I still observe then? Or is that not allowed?
Also, in your pinned post, it says you are maronite. Is that a separate sect (as in, different from catholic, orthodox, protestant?)
And finally, is sexual intercourse permitted during lent?
Sorry if this is a lot!
catholic lent has already started, yes! it's not a closed practice for catholics and afaik the same goes for orthodox christians (orthodox followers plz feel free to weigh in!) so I think it would be fine for you to observe it. hell, since you're not religious, you could try it any time of year. I'm not sure exactly what that would look like bc it's hard for me to conceptualize lent outside of a christian framework (and specifically its place in the full cycle of the liturgical year), but you should feel free to approach it however works for you imo. lent is a pretty self-directed thing even for christians; there are broad responsibilities—fasting (from food if safe to do so; some people fast from other things e.g. substances or—yes—sex, but it's not required), prayer/reflection, and almsgiving/works of mercy, but how we go about those things is open-ended. it's basically a time to identify and distance yourself from things that are barriers between you and god/your neighbor.
maronites are catholics! we're part of the roman catholic communion—all the churches that recognize the bishop of rome (aka the pope) as the highest church authority, which is the primary difference from orthodoxy. the catholic communion is made up of 24 "autonomous particular churches"; the latin church (what most people in the west think of when they hear "catholic") is one and the other 23 are "eastern catholic" churches including maronites, chaldean catholics, etc. this system was established so that after the great schism, eastern churches that wanted to remain in communion with rome could do so while still practicing our traditional liturgical rites in our traditional liturgical languages, rather than switching to western practices. for that reason a lot of eastern catholic liturgy resembles orthodox liturgy more than latin catholic liturgy, because we use many of the same liturgical rites. basically all eastern catholics are catholics but not all catholics are eastern catholics, and not all eastern christians are eastern catholics but all eastern catholics are eastern christians, and all orthodox christians are eastern christians but none of them are eastern catholics. if that makes any sense 😭

Happy Wip Wednesday! (which of course I get on Thursday because of the time difference… what a sad story)
But I am so happy when you tag me! I also created a freaking ugly banner for the occasion!!!
@special-bc-ur-part-of-it and @shame-is-a-wasted-emotion, thank you darlings <3
I have multiple wips going at the moment. I'm going to share a snippet from La Dolce Vita, cause at least I resolve to continue it instead of abandoning it.
In the midst of the Roman traffic, he was sure that the only ones who stood out were the two of them. They moved between cars on the Vespa with ease and sinuous movements. The boy never made him worry about falling or slipping, he just felt safe. Leaning his cheek against the boy's back, fully relaxed on him, he felt that this was the life he wanted to live. Frenetic, colorful, noisy. In Leastein there was no noise, everything was very sober and quiet. Rome was outrageous, crazy and alive. The sun was beating down on the asphalt and the temperature was getting hot; it was almost noon. He could not remember the last time he had had the honor of sweating. And he almost enjoyed being embraced by a sun he felt so unfamiliar.
Let me make two things clear:
this is not betaed, so errors will obviously be edited
in the original there are names, but I decided not to write them down because I felt like I was ruining a surprise??? Does this make sense???
Those who want to play, please be free to do so! Surely you all played yesterday 😭🤌🏻

🦅, 🗣️, and 🐕 !! also au where aaron works at w.aystar sounds soo so fun omg
WEEEEEEEEEEEEE
🦅How good are their friends at being wingmen? Do they even help at all or just sit back watching the pining with a bag of popcorn?
AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT AARONS FRIENDS OH BOY...
(aaron is one of like... 10 fully fleshed out ocs i have that all make up a wretched wretched friendgroup of late 20's gays and i love all of them dearly. i could literally talk abt them forever theres SOO MUCH!!! if anyone ever wants to get an earful frm me feel free to inquire bc holy hell like 10 years of oc content n my mind...)
ANYWAY... his friends are sick of his shit anyway so when he's like 'ooh new man :3c' theyre already like. shut the hell up brother. but when they meet roman...they can't help but be a /little/ charmed. they wont wingman for aaron bc his lovelife is so radioactive they dont wanna get near that shit. but tbh they do think roman is funny and he fits in with all of their senses of humor and stuff. even aarons childhood bestie (who hates everyone hes ever dated) likes roman so he gets a Good Grade in getting along w aarons housemates. so much to say on this but i'll leave it at that.
this doesn't...apply to poor roro so much bc he's like...deeply lonely...certainly no friends who he would come out to, or introduce his bf to. :(
🗣️ Who’s the one that will ramble on about their highly specific interest while the other just sits back and nods along?
i think that they both do this to some degree. aaron is the bigger culprit bc he has a lot of interests roman wouldnt know very much about (specific genres of music, culinary arts, specific horror movies), but they pretty equally yap at eachother! they both have SO MANY OPINIONS on filmbro shit...also roman is actually pretty knowledgeable on art so they can both bounce off eachother about that too! when roman talks abt work aarons eyes do tend to glaze over.
🐕: Do they have any pets together? If one of them had a pet from before their relationship how well does the pet get along with their partner? Do they have the pets approval or does said pet sit in between them and their partner any time they try to make a move?
aaron has a silly lil cat named gustav!!!! thats his baby (adopted the cat after a bad breakup and pair bonded to him Instantly) and he would take a bullet for him. roman never had animals growing up and at first was a little iffy on gustav but eventually he falls completely in love with him. before hes able to have any public pics of aaron he makes a picture of gustav his lock screen on his phone....
gus is iffy on rome at first but after about a month or so of bribery via treats he's chill...he still gets a little jealous and tries to sit between them on the couch and in bed. he also yowls like a bastard outside the door whenever hes locked out.

Top 3 stories of yours that you wish everyone would read—GO! Then remember to pass this on to at least 5 other people ❤️ (no pressure tho)
Hello Anon! I am finally getting around to answering this! <3 I'm again maybe copying some answers from similiar asks.
Drabble #51 - Francetto This may be one of my favourite drabbles ever - it certainly is my favourite Francetto piece. It has it aaaall: They've fucked in an abandoned building. Franci is being a fucking showboat. Dolcetto endears his lover's madness calm but intrigued. Rome Is A Corrupting Entity, which I am sure the clutuals would have a lot to say about. Plus, the song it's inspired by is a fucking banger! Zugezogen Maskulin's reinterpretation of Falco's Junge Römer is my everything.
Between Me and the Goddess (and You) Will you please, for the love of God, read my Imperial Rome setting AU that doesn’t rely on some Victorian decadence narrative bc these mfers believed Tacitus blindly. We don’t need love slave bullshit and tyrannical hedonism, we need a couple who is so concerned for each other’s health that they travel miles and miles for it. We need Harry being so close with Michele that he involves him in Magic - in something that is ought to only be between the one who calls upon a divine Entity and the Entity itself. Michele, who cannot bear a night parted from his love to fix his own troubles, in case Harry’s leg gives him grief all alone. Also, curse tablets are inherently funny, so please read this SicIre trip to Aquae Sulis, where Harry wishes plague upon houses for petty theft.
She's the only one I want, she's my only wish Dreadful title aside, I treasure this little TurGre AU fic a lot. It fundamentally highlights their differences, but that this is what makes them drawn to each other. And it shows how full of love they are when they talk about their friends and what Herakles is risking to get his friends back. They annoy each other, they argue a lot, you can see Sadık's ugly and controlling side and you can see how cold Herakles gets in response, but the spark is still there. Not to mention, I had tons of fun with their 'are sirens bird- or fishwomen' debate. So if you'd like some late medieval/early modern high seas slowburn, feel free to check this one out.

☆Nine people tag☆
Thank you @morbertthemindless for tagging me☺️🫶🏻
last song: Kolima by Eleni Foureira slay of the century
last film: I went to see Bottoms a few weeks ago and it was amazing! It’s really worth all the attention it’s been getting and I highly recommend it, plus it was a nice experience to go see a movie in a theater
currently reading: The Daughters of Rome series by Kate Quinn!! I started it over the summer and it made me want to read for fun again!!! I've read the first two but the last two books have Trajan, Hadrian, and Antinous as characters and focus on Sabina as the protagonist, so I am especially excited for those! I'm also reading Plato's Apology and some various poetry from Ovid for school. Lastly, I have been reading a stage adaptation of the Satyricon but I actually put that on hold because it’s showing in a city where some of my family lives so I’m going to see if I can see the play with no spoilers when I visit them🥸
currently watching: the Hadrian opera at the moment! The shows I have been watching are The Sopranos, Drag Race (US version), and Criminal Minds but yeah i don't watch a lot of tv anymore
current obsession: probably just the usual... I'm still thinking about Hadrian and Petronius + his Satyricon a lot and tbh it feels weird to put anything else on the same level of obsession for me... I have been researching Apuleius lately for some personal stuff, who I think is very fascinating as a person, but also as proof that it is not necessary to write down every thought one may have. I also plan to become obsessed with Socrates/Alcibiades bc I started drawing them more and I already LOVE them so we will see how that develops :)
tagging @illegible-scribble @emperornero, @kebriones, @eternalexander, and @kunstkamera1714, no pressure to do it!!
Also, anybody who wants to share their answers please feel free!! I usually just tag people I interact with a lot so please if you're not tagged and want to be in the future respond to the post with the 💚 emoji and I will add you to a tag list!
#tagged#tbh the song one was very difficult and I have my spotify in my carrd bc there’s really not one that represents my music taste#anyway thanks for reading this essay lol I’m self isolating and bored rn

Hi lovelies,
Okay so on account of me having a very a gifted kid (turned burn out) childhood, I read the Iliad at age 11 and so I could probably recite that thing in my sleep. The Aeneid, however, I do not know nearly as well, on account of Aeneas being the most boring hero ever. Anyways I was checking out the World of the Hero spec for my A-levels and there is a huge chunk on Augustus’ reasons for commissioning the Aeneid and the political context behind the epic, and so today I am going to try and explain the reforms made by Augustus- also known as the Pax Augusta.
Okay so some general context. When Virgil wrote the Aeneid Rome had just finished a period of 100 years of civil war and was dealing with its new found peace at the hands of Aeneas, and the concept of single leadership. At the time of the Roman Republic it was massively important that no one man had all the power, and so power sharing took place. Some things happened and this all went to shit, hence the emergence of a civil war. Towards the end of the civil war, there were two powerful individuals vying for power- Mark Antony and Octavian (aka Augustus). Augustus defeated Antony at the battle of Actium (31 BC) and became the leader of the new Roman Empire. As the first emperor, Augustus has to be incredibly careful about how he plays his power, not wanting to risk rekindling another set of wars, and the way that he enforces his power is through a series of new laws and, frankly genius, propaganda victories- these were known as the Pax Augusta.
Quick note, the Pax Augusta are sometimes referred to as the Pax Romana and also refer to a 200 year period of peace and military expansion, starting with the rule of Augustus, but his propaganda, politics, and constitutional reform are also known as the Pax Augusta because of the major role they played in this 200 year peace.
After the demise of the Second Triumvirate, Augustus restored a sort of mask of a free Republic with the majority of governmental and political power belonging with the Senate, the magistrates, and the Tribunes. However, what he actually did was get the Senate to agree that, by law, Augustus had the power granted to him by the Senate for life, this included military command. He passed a series of laws from 30- 2 BC that transformed the framework of the Republic into the constitution of the Empire. Some of these reforms included a new system of taxation, a standing army, and an official police guard. His reforms are split up into the First and Second Settlement.
During the first Settlement, Augustus modified the Roman political system to make it more palatable to the senatorial, rather than the plebeian, classes. In 28 BC, he got rid of the emergency powers he had as a dictator and returned all power to the Senate and Roman people. But this is not the democratic win you think it is. So in the time of the Republic, a sure fire way to guarantee someone’s assassination was to refer to them as ‘king’, because of the fear of single leadership. Now, if Augustus calls himself a King he is sure to get overthrown, so if he wants to be a single leader, he needs to be clever about it. So instead, he has himself called Principes Civis (first citizen). Clever. He also has another title ‘Imperator Caesar divi fillies Augustus’. This is genius, because, it links him to Caesar who was still very popular amongst the lower classes, and also calls him ‘son of the divine’ which just gives him a whole new level of legitimacy. Sort of like the medieval concept of the divine right of kings. By the end of the first settlement he finds himself in an ideal political situation where unofficially the Senate have granted him all the powers of a dictator, and he has an identity of such influence, that, if he says something, people naturally just agree.
During the Second Settlement, he takes on the role of Tribunica Potestas, which means that he act of the guardian of Roman citizens. This comes with a stupid amount of benefits because he can now propose laws to the Senate whenever he feels like it, and also veto laws. This basically gave him legislative supremacy.
Surely you’re asking the same question I did when I first learnt all of this. If Augustus has effectively established himself as a single leader, how come no one has challenged him? The reason for that is basically because the last 100 years of the Republic was technically single leadership during the time of the civil war, and whilst the single leadership was constantly changing, it was still there, and so when Augustus establishes himself as Emperor, it isn’t as shocking because that’s effectively what its been for the last century.
Okay that’s a brief overview of the political, so now the propaganda. In Rome there is something called the Gates of Janus. When the gates are open, Rome is at war, and when they are closed, Rome is at peace. So for the last 100 years, the gates have been open. Augustus makes this huge show of closing the gates, symbolising an era of peace, and indicating that the peace is because of him. Seriously this guys PR team worked overtime. Another genius example of propaganda was the Aeneid.
The greatest propaganda achievement, arguably, was the Ara Pacis, or Altar of Augustan Peace. It was commissioned by the Senate in 13 BC to honour the peace established by Augustus. The theme of peace is shown on the east and west sides of the altar. It shows a goddess (probably Venus or Peace) with a symbol of prosperity and fertility. Twin sit on the lap of the goddess along with a cornucopia of fruits. Bene that the goddess sits a bull and lamb- both animals used for sacrifice. On each side of the goddess are two women, depicting the sea and wind (one riding a bird and the other a sea monster). Basically, its him saying looking at the peace and prosperity I have brought you, and also while I was at it, I conquered the sea and sky as well.
Anyways listen, dictatorship is bad, but the guy was a genius about it. That was a whistle stop tour of Augustan propaganda and I hope you all enjoyed reading about the Pax Augusta. Enjoy your weeks xx

I answered 15 before so I'll skip it here
4 -had your aesthetics changed at all during last year?
Like appearance? Appearance = aesthetics? It went from 'don't grab attention' to 'grab even less attention'. Rly, I don't like standing out in any way appearance-vise so I dress in most non eye-catching way possible. B/W and other non-flashy color of clothes, light brown hair, some min makeup etc.
6- name 3 books that changed your life
Some school textbooks I've cried over. Possibly my high school history book, I lost nights over it. And I still remember nothing, except that some dude set Rome on fire then composed a song about that. Wild times in ancient Rome and Greek
9- favourite quote
Don't have any. But I bet something cool could be found in classic literature
10- state unpopular opinion you have
Parking on walkway should be illegal af!
Actually I think it is prohibited here by law but noone is enforcing that law unless you personally call hauler vehicle to pick up car that parked on pavement (owner would be fined). Side streets here have narrow sidewalks and cars in some streets are parked so close to buildings I can barely use sidewalks. I lost count how many times I had to walk on road instead; and if young thin person without any luggage can't pass, noone can really; maybe except 7yo kids, but that's not the point. What about baby strollers, elderly with canes or those market bags they carry. Idk what disabled people with wheelchairs do in this city since streets are basically unusable for them, from markets to escalators that are never working to narrow sidewalks to basically everything.
And ofc there's danger of using roads bc cars use them too. I doubt I'd get hit by one since I'm aware of them and they're aware of pedestrians in side streets but I hate that I always have to be concentrated on cars moving around me (and then on rainy days you get splashed by cars ;-;). And that's me, neurotypical fully-abled person in early 20s.
Ik parking is a problem and they have nowhere to park cars (and want free parking) but I also want to be able to use fucking sidewalks like they're meant to be used :< maybe we need less cars and more people using public transport...
