What I Took from Colditz
WARNING: SPOILERS. I will be giving out the plot. If you're interested in the movie, better to go watch it THEN read my thoughts and make a post of your own so I can hear what you think.
So I took a rainy day yesterday to watch Colditz, the 2005 British 2-part miniseries starring Damian Lewis, Sophia Myles and Tom Hardy. Let's just say it was a great movie to watch on a drizzly, cloudy, depressing day.
Let me preface this way: I love the WW2 period, and I love reading any book or seeing any movie set in the period. But the driving incentive to see this movie was Damian Lewis (-;) The only thing I'd seen him in was Band of Brothers (in which his performance was STELLAR) and I really wanted to see him in another role. And one quite unlike Dick Winters, which this movie fit the bill. So I probably would have seen this movie had not Damian been in it, because of the historical setting, drama, and let's face it, fascinating storyline, but Damian was the reason I saw it ASAP. So I come to it with a liking for the actor, though he does portray a bit of a jerk. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
So even if you haven't seen the movie, chances are you know already the synopsis:
Three escaped POWs escaped from their camp and are about to be recaptured at the border of Switzerland. Only one, Scotsman Nicholas McGrade (Lewis) has a shot at getting away. Before he goes, his comrade Jack Rose (Hardy) asks him to look up his girl whom he met right before leaving London, and tell her... Tell her what? He doesn't expressly say. He'd told McGrade earlier he regretted not asking Lizzie (Myles) to marry him. But he doesn't tell McGrade what to tell her. Just says to find her.
McGrade gets back to London, gets promoted to Lieutenant, and is excited to get back to his life. He looks up Lizzie, tells her about Jack, and we can see he has a liking for her pretty much from the start.
Meanwhile, Jack is taken to Colditz, a castle where Germans are keeping POWs. He and his buddies start escape plans immediately. Their story runs parallel to McGrade's in England, but I'm going to focus on McGrade's.
McGrade sees Lizzie at a club one night and after some conversation about Jack (she can't remember what he looks like and she feels guilty ) and some pretty adorable flirting, they dance. We can see Lizzie is unnerved by Nick, and when he tries to kiss her, she leaves. He walks her home. Of course. Worked up and high on emotion, Nick tells her "we can do anything we want. We can be anything we want. We can have anything we want. I want you." At which point Lizzie kisses him, then runs away, distressed because of Jack.
I think it's important to legitimize that Lizzie and Nick had feelings for each other. He was the bad guy, he did terrible things, but I don't believe falling in love with Lizzie was one of them. I know it was his buddy's girl, but Lizzie also was attracted to him as well. He had much greater blunders to commit.
After their kiss, Lizzie wants to put distance between them. "I don't want you to come here again," she tells him. Here is where Nick makes his first AWFUL error, taken with the desire to have Lizzie: he forges a letter telling her Jack is dead. This is terrible and heinous, no way around it. Did Nick really think Jack wouldn't come back??
Well, his ploy works in bringing Lizzie, right to his door. And here is where I will clarify that Nick does not push or coerce her at all, to his credit. (I mean, beyond making her think her fellow is dead, which is probably worse than coercing her...) One blogger said something to the effect of "Nick convinces her to share his bed" which is not what happened. Lizzie came right to him. And despite his deception and all that, Lizzie does love him. I think that's important.
With Jack out of the way, Nick has Lizzie all to himself. They appear to be quite happy together. And then a Colditz man escapes, to the anxiety of Nick. He sees Nick and Lizzie together and recognizes her from a drawing he did for Jack in Colditz. Nick keeps falling lower and lower, meanwhile, mistake upon mistake. The escapee from Colditz knows his dirty secret and says so, and Nick kills him. He doesn't mean to. But it's done nonetheless, and Nicks wrongdoing strangles his happiness with Lizzie.
Jack escapes from Colditz. Nick finds out, and gives up the name of the safehouse he's staying at, betraying his country and their cause. Knowing he's soon to be caught, he asks Lizzie to marry him and go with him to America. "I want to be wherever you are," she replies, sealing their engagement with a kiss.
They don't make it out of the country. Jack finds them, and the two men have a face off. Nick ends up shot by fellow soldiers for treason, and it's Lizzie who comforts him, calling him a bastard even as she holds him close as he dies.
Jack pursues Lizzie, but she is shaken, distant and confused. "I don't know if I have any love left to give," she tells him. Her love affair with Nick haunts her, as I'm sure it did the rest of her life. As I said, I'm sure she really did fall in love with Nick. What they had was much different than the attachment she had to Jack, whom she met only three weeks before he left for the war. There is not a defined ending for Lizzie and Jack.
People who are at all familiar with the history of Colditz as well as the old Tv show are usually quite disappointed in this movie. Many claim it was basically just a setting for a dramatic love story, and it did history a disservice. I enjoyed it because I watched it just for the love story (hey, it pays to be honest) and I like stories set in WW2. I will say though that it gave more screen time to the plight of the POWs than critics led me to believe. Anyhow, I enjoyed it for what it was, being fond of romance, drama, angst and oh, yeah, Damian Lewis. It was nice to see him in a role where he was exuberant, outgoing, and yeah, human (cause face it: Dick Winters is a heavenly being of some sort). And he did a Scottish accent that was quite impressive to me. (Gee whiz, I've heard this Brit American, and Scottish now! How does he DO that?!)
It's a heck of a dramatic, frustrating, depressing story. Remember it on the next rainy, gloomy day.

I May Destroy You Review
Tumblr media
I May Destroy You
Story line: 6/10, Generally, the story line was good, it was interesting and sometimes shocking. However, at times it was hard to follow, especially the last episode. I know in the last episode there was a message, but I did not really catch it and maybe the was me being dumb. But the fact that it was hard to follow made it difficult to watch and thoroughly enjoy.
Protagonist: 7.5/10, Arabella is a fascinating character in my opinion. You are led to believe that she is damaged from the events that occurred in the beginning but as the season progresses you can kind of see that she also has a bit of unresolved childhood trauma. At some point it was hard to see if things would get better for her as bad things kept on happening to her, but she managed to push through everything which I really respect.
Would I watch again?: It is very unlikely considering I didn’t really love it the first time, it would help if I re-watched to really understand the story but right now at this moment I do not think that I will be watching it again.
Overall: 7/10, I May Destroy You is definitely worth the watch, some of the topics covered are raw and may trigger some people, so I would be quite cautious. I like how the show works to educate people on different types of sexual assault and how that affects people. However, this is not one of those shows that you can causally put on and do other activities, it needs your full attention and things need to be digested properly, unless you are just going to be confused.

A brand new digital painting to celebrate Morwenna, one of my favourite character from “Poldark”, a novel/tv series based in Cornwall between the 18th and the 19th century. She’s a cutie little thing 🌷 💕

EastEnders Iconic Episodes:- Den & Angie
Tuesday 23rd June 2020
Good evening everyone! I know it's been a hot minute since my last post. I've been debating on what to post about, considering there are so many EastEnders clips for us to dive into whilst it's off air. After a long think, I thought it would be good to perhaps write about the iconic episodes which have been airing on Tuesday evenings. So many epic memorable EastEnders moments, some which I never got round to seeing when they originally aired. What a perfect time to write about some of the soaps most memorable moments.
So last Tuesday was iconic two-hander episode between Den and Angie Watts. What I'd give to be a viewer during that time to see Leslie Grantham and Anita Dobson in the highlight of their time on EastEnders. This particular episode was first aired on 16th October 1986. I'm not 100% sure what the story-line was but from the take on how the soap went, Den I believe had become fed up of Angie's drinking and had come to the decision that he wants to have a divorce and start a new life with Jan, I believe? Eager to keep hold of her husband, Angie was forced to come up with a way to keep him to herself. She was thrown into a corner and starting lines such as, "Booze is the least of my problems!" and "I'm really very ill!" .... Swirling and swirling a ball of lies to be able to keep hold of husband, I happened to notice that when Den asked her specifically what she had, I did think she was going to lie and say she had cancer, but she couldn't actually make an excuse and give an explanation, instead she blurted out that she only had 6 months to live!
Tumblr media
Den was visibly taken aback by this, taking back everything he had ever done to her, and promised her he will make her last 6 months the best yet, also promising her he won't leave her. At the very end of the episode Den leaves the Vic to gather his thoughts and process the news he's just been given, which unbeknown to him, is fake! Angie is left in the Vic alone and we see her just giving a little smile to camera. She's happy she's not losing her husband, but now she has just told the biggest lie anyone could come up with! I wish I knew how she managed to pull it off for so long, well up until that episode on Christmas Day when Den gifted her divorce papers, after she drunkenly admitted to a member of a bar that she had lied about it.
During the episode, I couldn't help but notice how awkward it was just to have those two main characters there for a two-hander episode, and yet the only other person they shared the screen with was the bloody window cleaner! I, personally, thought that was hilarious! That wouldn't happen nowadays in EastEnders ... if there was to be another two-hander episode, I doubt there would be anyone in the background such as a bin man or post man or whoever. They would leave the episode strictly on the two characters. I really enjoyed watching this episode and I'm happy I've been able to view it in full, I feel like being born in the 90s, I missed out on such iconic EastEnders moments involving Dirty Den and Angie. I'm sure I would've loved them! I was so happy when Den returned to the Square on 29th September 2003 with those iconic words to end an EastEnders episode, "Hello Princess!" - How bloody amazing was that? After 14 years of being away and assuming he had died, Dirty Den was back alive and kicking! During his return, he had some fantastic moments, sleeping with his son's girlfriend, in a way of convincing her that if she were to get pregnant, his son wouldn't leave her for Sharon! It only turned out terribly wrong when they were caught in the act, and then both his son and daughter admitted they were deeply in love with each other!
And then his time on the Square came to an end, officially, when his wife Chrissie killed him by smashing his head with a door stop, after she got him to admit his wrong doing's whilst not realising his daughter, Sharon, had heard everything from behind the bar. I truly believe that that was another iconic moment for EastEnders - the end of another phenomenal, epic character. I feel a little saddened that Angie never made a return to the Square, from my knowledge that is, that she never did? I would've loved Sharon to have a reunion with her Mum, even if it was just for a second, a small little reunion. I feel Sharon's life would be complete then - she had a reunion with her father, who sadly passed away, and then to have had a reunion with her mother - completely separately, would've been amazing! I mean, could someone enlighten me if I have this wrong, but has Angie already passed away in the soap? Was it ever mentioned that she had passed away? I don't recall. But if she hasn't, I feel it would be another iconic moment to see. What do you guys think?
I'm really looking forward to seeing what other iconic episodes are going to be pulled out of the bag for us to view. I believe next week is going to be the Sharongate episode, when her secret is brought to light when Grant plays the iconic tape in the Queen Vic for everyone to hear! That's another episode I never got to see when it originally aired. I'm really excited to see it!
Have any of you been watching the EastEnders episodes from 2008 which have been brought to BBC iPlayer? I watched the first few episodes and boy it was brilliant to see characters such as Pat, Peggy, Bianca and Janine once again. I couldn't get over how young Tiffany (Maisie Smith) and Whitney (Shona McGarty) looked! It's amazing how far both these wonderful actresses have come! I hope you all are enjoying all these EastEnders clips we've been given to feast our eyes on until the soap comes back on air in September! I think things are will slowly get back to some form of normality once everywhere begins to open from 4th July, of course, it's just a hope, but who knows what could happen, right?
Keep yourself safe! Keep indulging and watching the brilliant EastEnders clips and episodes that the wonderful BBC are providing us with, I'm sure we'll have much to look forward to when the soap returns. I'll be back on Tuesday with another blog following the iconic episode of #Sharongate! Have a good week everyone and I'll be back very soon! Lots of love to you all! xXx

Why this is the next book you should read before summer ends: “The anarchic, laugh-out-loud tone of Adam’s memoir masks a frank, insightful and often visceral portrait of a committed young professional struggling to do the job of his dreams” says Piers Wenger of #bbcdrama on the announcement @bbctwo has ordered @amateuradam bestseller #thisisgoingtohurt for an 8 episode comedy drama. We are delighted to represent this painfully funny #mustread here in the states and to congratulate Adam Kay and @picadorbooks @panmacmillan on the announcement that the book has garnered the inaugural @hearst #BigBook award in the #Biography category! . #Scrubs meets a modern #CalltheMidwife and we know you will ♥️.
