Bria shared a photo of a baby giving rock horns. A leaked photo of Mini BBB. Bradford burst out laughing when he saw that. When the band asked what was making him laugh, he told them. Everyone thought it was adorable! She was upstairs, resting after her first meeting with Brad's parents. William and Jane's preconceived notions about her were completely wrong. She had not lied about having cancer to trick their son, and she was not just using him for his money.

They hung out in the living room while the boys were working in the studio. The first thing they did when they arrived was wash their hands. They approached Bria, who was in her wheelchair, and introduced themselves. The animals stared at them with interest.

“Hi, humans.”

Bria and Brad introduced them as Misty, Princess, Micha, Henry, Growler, and Kate respectively. Misty and Growler were Mike and Dave's dogs. What was their relationship to her? Mike was her ex-husband’s brother. He and Dave were married. They questioned her about her marriage and divorce. She was open about her and Jason's shared drug addiction. He requested a divorce once they had both become sober. How did she first meet him? She grew up with both him and Mike.

Their families lived next door to one another for a few years. When she and her parents moved, they stayed close friends. Their engagement happened unexpectedly. Were she and her parents close? She was. Unfortunately, they were killed in a car accident in 2003. Muto and Donna, her in-laws, had taken on her parents' roles. Brad hoped his parents would accept her.

They were difficult to impress because they held traditional beliefs. The belief that men should be masculine while women should be stay-at-home mothers. He was a rebel who did not care what others thought. His brother and sister did not share his views. They sometimes wondered if he was gay. No, he simply did not meet their definition of what a man should be. Bria was the same kind of rebel. She did whatever she wanted while holding up her middle finger.

That was one of his favorite aspects about her. She embodied both innocence and rebellion. Every man who spent an hour with her developed an attraction to her. Okay, maybe not George. He preferred a particular type of woman. Jon? Yes, he would take her to bed if he wasn’t engaged to her. He was married, but that did not mean he did not have women. He had them sign non-disclosure agreements.

Bria was stunning, and it caught men's attention. Her outgoing personality and the way she treated others contributed to her attractiveness. She made him feel like the luckiest man alive simply by being with him. He was going to marry her regardless of his parents' approval. They talked privately about having an open marriage. He questioned her about her arrangement with Jason. Initially, they were allowed to be with other people. They just needed to be honest with each other.

They did it because he was going to Cambridge for graduate school and did not want her to wait for him. He also wanted to be with other men. It just seemed fair to give her the same courtesy. That fell apart due to his addiction and refusal to know what he wanted. He preferred to be with other men while keeping her to himself.

The divorce occurred unexpectedly. In retrospect, she was relieved when he requested a divorce. He wanted to know why. Jason lacked maturity. She could have returned to drugs. He believed that was possible. Did she know he would gone back to rehab?

Yes, she overheard Mike and Dave discussing it. They had no idea she knew. Did she want them to find out? It made no difference to her. They were probably doing it to keep her from getting stressed out about it. She wanted him to get the help he needed. They met them after she had taken a nap. Dave asked her how things went with his parents. It did not go so well. He chuckled.

"My parents are not easily impressed. She tried everything she could, but nothing worked. They have old-fashioned ideas and can be extremely stubborn."

"Okay, yeah. Yikes. The best thing you can do is try. How are you doing?"

"It sucks because this has never happened before. I am not saying I am everyone's favourite," she explained.

"We understand what you are saying. Some people are just difficult to get along with," Mike explained.

They discovered she knew about Jason. Mike confirmed that they were trying to protect her. She already had enough to worry about, and they did not want her to worry about him. How did their parents react? When he relapsed, Muto planned to call the cops and have him arrested for drug possession. He and Dave also agreed that he would not be allowed to be near her if he was using drugs.

She was asked for her opinion. What did she think? She believed they were very reasonable. They were not enabling him. At the same time, he required tough love. She would always love him because they had been friends for so long, and she despised what he was doing to himself. He needed to realize that he needed to put on his big boy pants and show that he was serious about staying sober. Did she believe they were being unfair to him? Yes, but then what? He was dying from being babyed.

"If I relapsed repeatedly, you guys would do the same thing. The same goes for Mike, Chester, and Brad. We are addicts, but that does not mean we should not be held accountable.

"Bria, where do you get your wisdom?" Dave questioned.

"I am not sure, dude. If you find out, please let me know. That is why I invited you to live with me. So we can support each other through our sobriety."

A recovering addict shares tips on how to love an addict. I have an addict in my life, who will remain anonymous. Unless, of course, he reveals his identity. I have been clean and sober for several years. The most difficult year following rehabilitation was the first year out. The cravings were so strong that I went to a friend's house in search of drugs. He turned me down before turning me into Mike and Dave.

I returned home with my tail between my legs and my head down in shame. Staying sober is more than just saying no to drugs or alcohol; it is a mental exercise that helps you overcome cravings. It is about learning to deal with shit by asking for help. Your drug dealer is not one of your friends. The liquor will not solve your problems. Addiction is the act of lying to oneself and those one cares about. You try to resist temptation until you can't. That is when you slip up or relapse. You beat yourself up when you see everyone else's disappointment.

The guilt drives you deeper into your addiction. However, addiction also requires boundaries. No, I will not give you any money. No, I will not let you into my home. I have a lot of sympathy for the addict because I know what it makes you do. I also feel compassion for those who have to discover they have been duped again and whose trust has been broken repeatedly.

They then have to make the difficult decision to remove the addict from their lives. Addiction does not imply freedom from consequences. I love you, [blank]. I will never stop loving you. But I have to cut you off right now because I have to prioritize my health. I am sorry. - Bria

The Great Anime Rewatch of 2024 - Part IV

Lucky Star

First watched: Circa 2008? Rewatched: January 2024

The weird shit about Lucky Star is that even though the show is essentially about nothing, the episodes go by very quickly for me. (Compared to other slice of life shows in this rewatch round that were mind numbingly slow, but actually had a plot, or something resembling a story arc: Aoi Hana, Aria, and Kimi ni Todoke.) Its quick switching between scenes due to its nature as a 4-koma adaptation is actually doing wonders for my shitty attention span. With that said, it was wearing out its welcome very quickly, and motivation to watch more was low. The second half starts focusing on the expanded cast that I don’t give a shit about, and I don’t think other fans do either. Lucky Star is definitely not a show to be binged, and I also don’t see myself revisiting it again.

Blood Blockade Battlefront 1 & 2

I’ve been on a weird streak of watching anime featuring blonde twins: Migi & Dali, Trigun Stampede, and now BBB. As soon as I started watching, I remembered the original story was written by the same author as Trigun. Rewatching Trigun did not go well for me. But wait! Matsumoto Rie directed the first season. Maybe this won’t be so bad. 

First off, I’m not wild about the art style—specifically the way people are drawn. There are stunning visuals elsewhere: the not-chess match in episode three, the giant tree train station, etc. The ending sequence is fun and joyous. BBB’s tone reminds me more of Baccano or Space Dandy than Trigun, which is definitely a good thing. What I don’t think is a good thing is how BBB starts with a large cast, and primarily focuses on what they can do, rather than who they are. The problem is exacerbated as new characters are introduced every episode. Space Dandy was similar, but that show did a much better job of establishing its core cast. Then the story shifted to anime original material which was so poorly done and…maybe Matsumoto Rie isn’t as good of a director as I once thought. (Although I do love King of Despair, he just wasn’t in the right anime.)

The second season’s change in director was noticeable immediately. The first thing that felt different was the music—we started off with a rap song. The visuals also look cleaner. And, oh? What’s this? We’re finally spending time on the Libra members? I’m finally getting a feel for who they are as people now? Amazing. This is what I was looking for last season. But of course, I’m impossible to please, whatever. And now my problem is that the entire season is episodic, and no overarching goal for the heroes to be working towards. The seasons should’ve aired in reverse: season one should’ve been character-centric episodic, and give an overarching story to season two. There were some fun moments, but BBB just didn’t do it for me the second time around.

Here’s an anime no one else remembers. Taking place in the year 2025, and with the original story starting publication in 2003, it’s interesting to see how people depicted the future without the presence of social media and over-reliance of cell phones. Other than that, there’s not much to say about Rideback. I think the premise of a retired dancer trying to find a new purpose could’ve been really lovely in the hands of a better writer. Too bad the writing and characters are dull, but the mechs themselves are cool. More pirouetting mechs please. Moving on.

Full Metal Panic! & Fumoffu

This is such an anime anime: teenage mercs piloting mechs, high school romcom, terrorists, man Full Metal Panic! sure does have it all. When I first watched it, I liked it enough to watch the sequel, the comedy spinoff, and the OVAs/specials. There is something about it that is timeless, yet it has aged strangely. The first few episodes in particular were very bad. Barring the lackluster animation, it did get better, or at least more tolerable. I’m thankful that Sosuke’s secret was out to Kaname by episode five. But every time I finished an episode, I asked myself, ‘what actually happened?’ Things are happening, but it never feels like the plot is advancing, or the characters are growing. I lasted twelve episodes. 

Crunchyroll doesn’t have the second season, but it does have Fumoffu. I had a much better time here. Because the jokes are so specific to the characters and the bits actually have a plot, the comedy has aged surprisingly well. 

I didn't realize how big of a franchise Full Metal Panic! actually is until now. With a a ridiculous number of light novels and manga, and anime adaptations as recent as 2018, I can’t fathom this story going on for as long as it has.

Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket and I go waaaaaay back. Both the English and Japanese versions, as well as the manga, I couldn’t get enough of this shit when I was in middle school. I’ve been wondering whether to watch the remake for a while now, but wanted to revisit the original first. 

Barring the mispronunciations of the character’s names, the dub's core cast still rocks. I alternated between English and Japanese depending on what characters were present. Also this is funny as hell. 

The main issues I have with this adaptation are: the soundtrack sounds like it only has ten songs, and constantly reuses the same song each episode, the lackluster art style and animation (Deen 2001 at your service), and some of the English voice actors. Aside form that, this story still holds up. And I am more emotionally attached to it than I thought I was going to be. I still like these characters, I still like this story, and I still love that gentle opening song. I had a good time revisiting this. 

Dear fucking god please let the remake still keep the humor. Don’t let it succumb to the melodrama.

I was cringing so bad when Marlene tried to explain their quackery. I know it's fictional universe but still my little heart was about to sink down to my ass. 

I love that we are talking about would it work or how it would be distributed. Trouble is they would never go as far as to... anything? I never played the game but based on the show. The doctor guy is a doctor, not a scientist. That's why we have translational medicine cause scientists sometimes can't grasp the reality and translate the developments into the medical fields BUT doctors on the other hand can't grasp the underlying subcellular functions of the disease or a drug.

So he is clearly a doctor (and so far there is only him, one fucking person lol) and they use the term signaling molecules/chemicals? Vague is not even a word I can use to describe it. Honestly, it might not even be a chemical being produced but a long standing change in Ellie and her cells presenting mushroomy/having mushroomy receptors to communicate. Just one example of many. They would actually have to find the compound or whatever is different in her. They would literally have to fish out the one thing out of millions, and mind you they are two decades into apocalypse aka event that would introduce a lot of changes into what would be considered a healthy human, so comparing samples with 2003 standards could be kind of iffy too. Not like anyone would think this far ahead though. Another important thing is, how much they know about the species itself? Do they know the exact species? The toxins and other funny stuff it makes? Do they know the detailed invasion mechanisms? How does it cross the BBB? What is the host immune response? If anyone tried to do any research on the fungus, do they have the data still and how reliable it is?

And here is the biggest kill me please, coming from people having no clue about the factual state of anything. They have no resources to grow it or even transport it in sterile manner from Ellie to wherever. Everything about that hospital space screamed contamination. And I'm fucking sure they have cleanrooms and safe preservation protocols and liquid nitrogen tanks up and running to preserve the VERY VALUABLE tissues since they are killing the only known source of it.

They are harvesting the materials that possibly POSSIBLY contains what they are looking for and in the process they are killing the source. Biopsy anyone??? And the actual material they plan to re-grow in the lab... Like okie, go and try to grow a mammalian brain/cordyceps mutant NOT ESTABLISHED cell lines in a post-apo lab. Yes go, go and do that but before you do you better ask if we have enough power to complete the surgery... How you gonna grow them? In what media? What you gonna feed it? Can you maintain environment oxygen/temp/pH at the very least? Can you make sure it is not contaminated or infected? I understand that Marlene got bioreactors installed in the sewers? Or is she more of a single use technology pusher girl? You just gonna put a piece of her brain on a slice of beef in an old fishtank and hope for the best aren't you?

The fungus is a living organism after all so it has growth requirements. Do they know what that even means? How deep the Ellie/mushroom connection is? It is mammalian mutant or they can separate the fungi? Can they immortalize the cells if they are in fact mammalian-ish? The cells will eventually die (it was established in the show that infected do in fact die) and then we have senescence too. Then, how would they make the cells produce the SIGNALLING CHEMICALS when these are probably only produced when there is a signal received for them to be produced cause all cells are smart like this and they like to make life easier for themselves and not everything is always in production mode on. How are they gonna harvest them from the lab grown cells? They can't just give people the crude cell extracts, they know as much right? RIGHT? How are they... yeesh there is like 3614 pages biologics R&D and production 101 essay brewing here but you getting the point ;c

Sorry for yelling I know it's fiction but people (me!!) been personally victimized by this stupid shit ;c also 20 years old research facilities? equipment sitting there for two decades, concept of validation and standards nonexistent anymore. At the time (2003) they just finished to sequence the human genome and it took like 15 years to do it and involved hundreds of labs all around the globe and SO SO SO MUCH RESOURCES. Again, fictional. But this is just stupid to even think ANYTHING they were thinking of doing would work in the slightest ;c 

Then when it comes to developing a drug/vaccine, that doctor lady in episode 2 already knew the story. She was ahead of her time like a real queen that she was may she rest in peace. 

Also big possibility (since who is gonna do a safety/efficacy studies or later I don’t know follow any GMPs), this shit cure might do fun things such as a) kill you, b) give you immune reaction so strong it will kill you, c) may have another adverse effects that might be lethal since there are no hospitals around, d) be contaminated and the contaminants are toxic and that kills you, e) might get you infected and mushroomised since they actually have no clue what the fuck they are working with. Just couple of possibilities cause yet another essay is brewing here.

These are my thoughts without sense or anything really and I wrote this on 3 hours of sleep but I WAS REALLY PERSONALLY VICTIMIZED BY A COUPLE OF LINES OF DIALOGUE and I need everyone to know this. But then I am attacked by every show that fails to even look basic biology concepts in the eye. This is what I like to call the breeding grounds for antivaxxers and this oil and prayers will cure my cancer crowds. 

Oh and Frank! I think it wasn't cancer but something neurodegenerative like MS.

Just in case anyone was wondering if the Fireflies would have found a cure: absolutely NOT.

Ignoring the game canon (where they mention that they have tried and failed and murdered dozens of immune kids), and only using text from the show we know for a fact that medicine has NOT advanced since 2003.

To begin with, when Frank is dying of cancer and wants to do euthenasia, Bill says they "might find a cure." Frank jokingly says that there was no cure before the fall, and he doubts there are any new doctors walking around with functional MRIs. This tells us we did not develop any new cures for incural diseases. In 2003 we did NOT have a cure for this fungal infection, and we don't even have one now in our 2023, let alone THEIR 2023.

In Kansas City Karen is holding a doctor hostage in exchange for information about Henry. He tries leveraging the fact that he's a doctor in an attempt to keep himself alive. It doesn't work. Doctors are NOT valued in this world.

Marlene mentions that when crossing the country they lost half their men, while Joel stayed alive the whole time. The Fireflies are barely equiped to travel, let alone distribute a life saving medicine. They are terrorists willing to experiment on children. Even if they found a cure, they would not give it away for free. It would become leverage in a power struggle, and Joel knows this.

That's just what I can think of off the top of my head. The Fireflies would have murdered Ellie and it would have been for nothing.

If the letters are rearranged they can spell hobnobs if you don't use all the letters, which is apparently a type of cookie according to the internet. I have never seen a hobnob before in my life. Google says they're british. The letters can also spell BB Johns Boob if you use all of them. That probably wasn't what you were going for either

So if you put the number of occurrences of each letter in the order the letter appears you get 114311 if you don't repeat the letters.
