Reposted from @bayardrustin1 THIS IS HISTORY PEOPLE, LOVE IS LOVE AND LOVE WINS. President Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act on Tuesday 12/13/22 at a triumphant White House ceremony, enshrining federal recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages into federal law for the first time. The Respect for Marriage Act formally repeals the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which was signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton. That bill denied same-sex couples federal benefits and permitted states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Reposted from @bayardrustin1 REMEMBERING SYLVESTER ON HIS 75th BIRTHDAY Sylvester James (1947-1988) was in some ways an unlikely star: an androgynous, cross-dressing, openly gay, African American, falsetto-singing, unapologetically flaming man-diva influenced primarily by church women, black blues singers, drag queens, hippies, and homosexuals. In the 1970s and 80s, Sylvester rode his marginality right into the mainstream--a star not despite the boundaries of race, gender, and sexuality he crossed but because of them--becoming an international disco sensation and an enduring icon of bold self-determination. https://www.instagram.com/p/CiMHFA_M-on/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#memorialday Reposted from @bayardrustin1 Memorial Day began in 1865 when Black locals in Charleston, SC exhumed mass graves of Union soldiers, gave them proper burial and had a parade to celebrate them. This is a day for us to remember and honor the generations of Americans who gave their lives to protect us and our freedom. https://www.instagram.com/p/CeMlPZMvONk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The choice to love is a choice to connect, to find ourselves in the other." -bell hooks. Reposted from @bayardrustin1 @dailyblackhistoryfacts April 3, 1968: #MartinLutherKingJr delivers his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech. King spoke at the Mason Temple (Church of God in Christ Headquarters) in Memphis, Tennessee. This would be his FINAL speech. The speech primarily concerns the Memphis Sanitation Strike. Dr. King called for unity, economic actions, boycotts and nonviolent protest, while challenging the United States to live up to its ideals. At the end of the speech, he discusses the possibility of an untimely death. REGARDING THE STRIKE; "The issue is injustice. The issue is the refusal of Memphis to be fair and honest in its dealings with its public servants, who happen to be sanitation workers." REGARDING ECONOMIC BOYCOTTS: "The individual Negro is poor but together we are an economic powerhouse, we should use this power to stop support for racist groups and instead empower Black businesses. Go out and tell your neighbors not to buy Coca-Cola in Memphis. Go by and tell them not to buy Sealtest milk. Tell them not to buy – what is the other bread? Wonder Bread. And what is the other bread company, Jesse? Tell them not to buy Hart's bread. As Jesse Jackson has said, up to now, only the garbage men have been feeling pain; now we must kind of redistribute the pain." REGARDING DEATH THREATS: "Like anybody, I would like to live - a long life; longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. So I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord." https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb6cQKFsRuB/?utm_medium=tumblr

Reposted from @bayardrustin1 Happy Birthday To A King The Federal Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first celebrated as a national holiday on Jan. 20, 1986, following state ratification. The holiday day is meant to commemorate King's birthday. But it’s not his actual birthday. King was born on Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta. He went on to become one of the most respected civil rights leaders in American history before he was assassinated in Memphis in 1968. The last time the federal holiday fell on his birthday was 2018. The next time will be in 2024. Why the discrepancy? MLK Day is observed on the third Monday in January because of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, a bill signed into law in 1968 and enacted in 1971. As passed, the mandate moved commemorations for George Washington’s birthday, Memorial Day and Labor Day permanently to Mondays. Washington's birthday and the federal holiday happen to coincide on Feb. 22. Monday was chosen so that federal employees could ensure long holiday weekends with their families. Four days after King’s assassination in 1968, Rep. John Conyers, Jr., D-Mich., introduced his first bill to honor the civil rights icon with a federal holiday. It took 15 years for his effort to succeed, with President Ronald Reagan signing a law for the event in 1983. Reposted from @bayardrustin1 DOMESTIC TERRORISM Angry white men are allowed to do this while many of us non-whites would be shot and killed. We are targeted while doing far less, or for doing nothing at all but walking down the street of our own neighborhood. We respect John Pavlovitz, for writing a brave article questioning his privilege and privilege of other whites that make it okay to commit violence against Blacks or people of color and terrorize the nation. Bayard Rustin Coalition has no doubt that the National Guard would have been called out on Black Lives Matter. They would be run down and killed like the Black Panthers, for protesting with guns in the face of police. Surely these angry white men will face little consequence. After all, the FAKE PRESIDENT in the White House has again called them good people, the same words he used to describe the white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia. Those whose hate murdered a young woman, Heather Heyer. These are the real terrorists about whom we should be concerned! - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/B_s8fbaJHE1/?igshid=1u0jn0g8e8u0r

Reposted from @bayardrustin1 (@get_regrann) - #BiWeek: BI VISIBILTY DAY! Today 23rd September, we observe #BiVisibiltyDay also known as International Celebrate Bisexuality Day as we reaffirm the existence, strength and resilience of the Bisexual Community worldwide. To commemorate, here are some facts about #Bisexuality; #1 Bisexuals make up more than 50% of the LGBTI+ community. #2 Bisexuality is real and its own identity. There is no in-between about it. #3 A person remains bisexual whether in a consensual same sex or heterosexual relationship as long as that's how they identify as. #4 Bisexual persons deserve equal human rights that are inherent to all of us without any form of discrimination or violence. #5 Bisexuals are capable of long, healthy and monogamous relationships if they choose. To the entire #Bi community, happy #BiVisibiltyDay2019! We see you! We celebrate you! You Are Valid! #BisexualsExist! #BisexualityIsValid! - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/B2x2Q8whlM-/?igshid=1gprxsewbsb54
