Marsha P. Johnson was an American gay liberation activist and self-identified drag queen, known as an outspoken advocate for gay rights, she was a mother figure to many young LGBTQIA+ people in her community — especially those experiencing homelessness.
◾ TW Violence, Hate Crimes ◾
On July 6, 1992, Marsha’s body was found in the Hudson River off the West Village Piers. The police determined she had committed suicide despite adamant claims from her friends and community members that she was not suicidal.

Trans and queer activists and allies mobilized to defend a family Trans Day of Visibility event in Brooklyn, New York, on March 30. The event at Marsha P. Johnson State Park included arts and crafts, informational tabling, and a drag story hour for children and parents. The annual event was targeted for a second year by far-right anti-trans protesters.
The community response was organized by NYC Queer and Trans Defense. This grassroots movement was created by activists in response to the growing number of fascist threats against queer events and venues, including drag story hour and Pride events at libraries, museums, and other public facilities in New York City.

Happy Pride Month!
Today's post is about Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. I'll warn you now, it's not entirely joyful. First, I want to say that while these two women were instrumental in our movement, there were many others who worked with them. The work continues even now. Please see them as the starting line, not the finish line.
Marsha P Johnson was six years older than Sylvia. The two met in New York, when Marsha was 17 and Sylvia was 11. Marsha had already established that she was transgender- of course, the language at the time was "transvestite". Sylvia was a young Puerto Rican trans girl, and Marsha encouraged her to embrace herself and her style as she had learned to do.
On the night of the Stonewall Inn Riots, Marsha and Sylvia arrived after the riot had started. I know someone is going to want to correct me and say Marsha threw the first brick, but no. Marsha herself, and many others, have said she arrived after the first riot began.
However - Marsha and Sylvia spearheaded the movement from there. They led marches, Sylvia gave speeches - and in fact I have linked some videos below of speeches and interviews they each gave. The two co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries - which was renamed the Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries.
Marsha was something of a den mother to homeless LGBTQ folks, taking them in when they were kicked out of their homes and embracing them when the world shunned them. She was also a fierce HIV Awareness activist, when much of the world saw it as "God's punishment for being gay". In 1992, Marsha's body was pulled from the Hudson river. Her death was ruled a suicide due to her history of mental illness, though Sylvia and others within the community argued that it was a homicide. A suicide note was never recovered, and Marsha's death was later ruled 'undetermined' but was not pursued as a homicide, despite the presence of a head wound.
Sylvia remained a lifelong activist, calling out queer folks who made themselves palatable for the straight and cis communities that had shunned them, calling out racism and transphobia within the community. She also advocated for sex workers and those with addiction, as she and many of the queer folks she knew struggled with these. She would pass away in 2002 due to complications from liver cancer.
See these links below for videos of the two :

Sylvia Rivera a year before her death, condemning the new, palatable movement - this is still a problem within our community, as many more radical activists have pointed out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI2bxUSRF7I

Reposted from @history_unerased History UnErased celebrates the history, achievements, and influence of the queer black community during Black History Month and EVERY month. History UnErased's Intersections & Connections curriculum makes LGBTQ history a part of mainstream history courses, allowing students to apply their own identity lens(es) as they approach their learning, whether it be race, gender, ethnicity, or nationality. Our curriculum includes forgotten and silenced figures of American history like #PauliMurray, #BayardRustin, #MarshaPJohnson, and #PerryWatkins, and many, many more! 🔵 We believe in a complete, complex, and empowering story of America, do you? 🔵 Reposted from @bayardrustin1 https://www.instagram.com/p/CoaU7PvPMJy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

happy pride to the sign i made for trans pride seattle many years ago that, due to my inability to plan how to correctly format posters, accidentally read “the first pride riot was a #marshapjohnson” and became my best friends’ favorite pride month rallying cry <3 🌈
#can’t find a picture of it sadly#i’m still a little sad it never took off#should have introduced it to the greater seattle polycule#that’s just a marketing failure right there#personal

Important to remember going into pride month - corporations want your money, but all the rainbows in the world doesn’t mean they care about your right to exist. @walgreens @draftkings @pepsi @att @anheuserbusch @zillow @amazon all donated to Florida’s shameful #DontSayGay Bill. Stop rainbow-washing hate and corporate greed, and remember that lgbtqia freedom comes from trans activists like #MarshaPJohnson, #SylviaRivera and #StorméDelarverie. From @staleypr, Larry Kramer, Vito Russo, Didier Lestrade and all the organizers from #ActUp back when Reagan was doing nothing about the AIDS epidemic. This year as much as any, our Pride should be about standing up and fighting back against the people trying to deny our existence. I definitely have privilege as a bi white woman in a hetero-passing marriage, but I’ll always stand with the LGBTQ+ community. #lgbtqia #lgbt #lgbtrights #lgbtqrights #gayrightsarehumanrights #humanrights #corporations #florida #rondesantis #bigotry #homophobia #transphobia #pride #pridemonth #respectexistenceorexpectresistance #nocorporationsatpride #gayrights #lgbtrightsarehumanrights #standupfightback https://www.instagram.com/p/CeHKELku8qO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
