Iâm watching BSG miniseries for the first time since the mini aired.
Itâs so interesting to watch BSG alongside my Voyager rewatch, by all accounts Battlestar Galactica 2003 was in response to the Ron D Mooreâs battles in the Voyager writerâs room.
It feels like from Bryan Fuller to Ronald D Moore, these writers have Voyager writerâs room related anger.
The writers were chafing at the bit at the way they always had to reset back to status quo, and hated how Voyagerâs rich premise was being hamstrung by Braga.
TrekMovie: On Voyager and Battlestar, it is a ship on its way to Earth with no infrastructure, there are some parallels. Would âRon Mooreâs Voyagerâ be like Battlestar, if you were the showrunner?
Ron Moore: YahâŚprobablyâŚwhen I was on my brief tenure on Voyager and I was starting to think in terms of what I wanted to do, I remember sitting with the writing staff and saying âI really thinkâŚthat when Voyager gets damaged it should get damaged, we should stop repairing the ship, the ship should be broken down more and devolving a little bit more.â One of the ideas I had is that they should start developing their own culture within the starship and letting go of Starfleet protocols and stop thinking of themselves as Starfleet people on some level, even though they still wear the uniform and still try to adhere to the regulations. I thought it would be interesting that by the time this ship got back to Earth, that it didnât even belong at Earth anymore. That it sort of had become its own culture, it had formed its own civilization which was dissimilar to that which they had left behindâŚNow that you mention this there was somebody, I donât think it was me, somebody had pitched the notion of them having to guard some alien ships they had encountered. It was a convoy and through some plot I canât remember that they had agreed to protect and Sheppard through some hostile star systems on their journey. And they were going to be the warship tending the little convey of civilian ships. And I was really taken with it and really liked the idea and thought it would be cool and it was sort of Galactica. We might have even mentioned GalacticaâŚ.but to your question, If I had been the showrunner from the beginning I probably would have sent it into a darker direction and sent it into a more harrowing journey yes. And made them more on the run and more less of a pretty journey getting back, and at the same time, I probably would have felt compelled to stay within certain boundaries of what Trek was and how Trek had established itself. So I donât think I could have taken Voyager to the places I have taken Galactica, even if I did have the reins.
(source)
I think in the end, I wouldnât have liked going on the deep end of this. A compromise of having more repercussions but still having the rails a Trek show would have, would work more.
I like the idea of Voyager having its own culture and the crew feeling out of step with Earth when they return.
Eventually, even BSG fell down some narrative deep end that was too much.
Itâs kind of amazing how Battlestar Galactica disappeared from the cultural zeitgeist because it was almost as big as Game of Thrones back in the day. It won so many accolades and awards that for a good long while almost every space show had the gritty filter of BSG.
I think thatâs what ultimately killed the Stargate Franchise when it tried to BSG-fy Stargate Universe.
TLDR, itâs interesting to look at Roslin and see the narrative lineage from Janeway to Roslin.
And looking at Adama/Roslin, itâs interesting how Chakotay/Janeway could have gone if Ron Moore were allowed to do more things in Voyager.
Itâs also fascinating how Roslin grew and took command the moment a crisis happened. If not for the attack (which until the end was BAFFLING because no matter how much the intro says it, THERE WAS NO PLAN) Roslin would just be in the background. Her potential unrealized.

This is Big Bang, a large Autobot who was intended to succeed Transformers Zone protagonist Dai Atlas as Autobot Supreme Commander in the 1991 storyline for the Transformers brand in Japan, but was replaced by Star Convoy (aka the resurrected Optimus Prime) in the released storyline Return of Convoy. Had he remained the lead character, he would have fought alongside Autobot Battlestars Iron Baron (Grandus in the final release) and Sky Garry to defeat the threat of Dark Nova.
Due to his status as a scrapped yet fully designed character, Big Bang has only made a few cameo appearances elsewhere in the series after being showcased in a Japan-exclusive series guidebook. He appeared in a few stories written by the Transformers Collectors Club as the Communications Officer of the Autobot Elite Guard under Sentinel Major, and IDW's Allspark Almanac II would identify a version of the character from the world of Transformers Animated who held the rank of Prime and was mentally-bonded to the giant Autobot Beta Supreme, who took the form of his starship, the Battlestar. His latest appearance in media would be in the rebooted IDW comics, in a flashback fighting alongside fellow obscure Autobot champion Halonix Maximus against Gaidora and his pack of turbofoxes.

Enjoy some new images of the 1991 Takara Return of Convoy Sky Garry and Shotbomber toys!
I had to glue the decals down because, starting with Victory in 1989, Takara started using just the weakest adhesive on the laminated-paper sticker sheets.

As pointed out by former Allspark staffer, PoweredConvoy, in our Super Megatron thread, the Generation Selects Super Megatron Web Comic/Manga was made available last night revealing the possibility that Super Megatron is a triple changer that has an alternate Tank mode! Read on for more information and to view the comic! Want to interact with more Transformers fans? This time we have a 2-part web comic/manga which seems to be linked to the events of previous Generation Selects Star Convoy and Seacons stories. In part 1 we can see a flashback with Convoy/Optimus Prime and Galvatron who face Unicron and his armada of small Unicron clones. Then, we get back to the battle against Optimus and King Poseidon (Piranacon) which is interrupted by the arriving of Super Megatron (who seemed to have taken down Halfshell previously). King Poseidon now battles against Super Megatron revealing a new âcombat modeâ transforming his limbs into weapons, but heâs defeated easily by the upgraded Decepticon leader.
Part 2 reveals the next battle. With King Poseidon out, now Super Megatron and Convoy/Optimus Prime clash. Optimus uses his silver Matrix and becomes Star Convoy again. He transforms into a new battle station mode and defeats Super Megatron. But the treacherous Megatron forces Optimus to hand him the Matrix in order to save some innocent inhabitants. Now, Super Megatron powers up again, and a second alt mode is revealed! A new tank form which seems a homage to Ultra Megatron (also seen only in the old G1 TV Magazine Battlestars: Return Of Convoy pages).

Since you guys brought up Battlestars earlier, can we get a post talking Super/Ultra Megatron, or at least show off some pictures so folks can see how incredibly awesome his design is?
Thereâs not a tremendous amount to say, so hey, why not! After Galvatron was buried under an iceberg by the Autobot Headmasters in the latter stages of The Headmasters anime in 1987...
...that was it for the OG Decepticon leader for a couple of years. Guys like Scorponok, Overlord, and Deathsaurus rose to replace him, but after their successive failures, 1991â˛s âReturn of Convoyâ storyline saw evil alien Dark Nova resurrect Galvatron after something like 20 in-universe years and reformatted him into âSuper Megatron,â to counter Optimus Prime, who had just been revived from his own death as âStar Convoy.â
After Optimus and his team, the âBattlestars,â merged into the colossal âTriple Combination Battlestar Attackâ vehicle, it became apparent that âSuperâ Megatron wasnât cutting it, so Dark Nova upgraded him again into âUltraâ Megatron:
Even that wasnât enough, and Ultra Megatron got blown to biscuits, but Dark Nova himself then merged with his remains to become âStar Giant.âÂ
But of course our heroes prevailed and Star Giant was destroyed. 2013â˛s Metrowars slipped an extra chapter into Megatronâs story, as it revealed that Ultra Megatronâs body was recovered by Straxus, who attempted to brainwash him via a mental link, observing that if Megatron did not stop fighting him, then Megatronâs âdiabolical natureâ would soon âcrumble away.â
This little retcon served as an explanation for Megatronâs restored âsanity circuitsâ in the Japanese Generation 2 storyline, when he worked with Optimus Prime to form the âCybertron Allianceâ... until humans killed an old friend of his, and everything went south again.

Something that mightâmightâbe interesting: a story in the vein of Battlestar Galactica with a convoy of disparate ships attempting to return to Terra from the Dark Imperium, skirting the Great Rift and pursued by Cylons Necrons Chaos I guess.

Hey guys, do you know of any Autobots that become an artillery platform? Particularly one with missiles on it
Assuming weâre leaving the classic huge city-bots and their battle station modes out of the equation, and discounting guys like Optimus Prime and Ironhide who have trailers and other parts of their alt mode that disconnect and turn into battle platforms, etc, the first ones to come to mind are the Powered Masters from Transformers Zone, Dai Atlas, Sonic Bomber, and Roadfire, who each transform into âZone Modeâ forms for Micromasters to man. Hereâs Dai Atlas:
The Battlestars, from the sequel series âReturn of Convoy,â had the same thing going on - Optimus Prime (in his revived form as âStar Convoyâ), Grandus, and Sky Garry. Hereâs Optimus:
Not quite an Autobot, but Beast Wars Maximal BâBoom (and his Japanese counterpart Apache) also has an artillery platform mode thatâs bristling with more guns and launchers than most!
Anyone got more suggestions?
