The Battle of the Somme took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916. It was one of the largest battles of the First World War, in which more than a million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history - by John Warwick Brooke (1886 - 1929), English

An unknown soldier has been returned to Newfoundland and Labrador, as Newfound prepares to mark Memorial Day, 1st July.
On July 1, 1916 — the opening day of the Battle of the Somme — most of the Newfoundland Regiment was killed or wounded at Beaumont-Hamel. The date has since been recognized since as a solemn one, even after Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949 and began to celebrate Canada Day on the same date.
Preparations have been underway to refurbish the Newfoundland National War Memorial ahead of the 100th anniversary of its opening. It will be the final resting place for the unknown Newfoundland soldier recovered from the Somme battlefield, to be interred now inside a newly constructed tomb.
The soldier was laid in state at Confederation Building from June 28 to June 30, allowing members of the public to visit the casket.

About midnight a message was passed down that I was wanted on the left. Proceeding there I found an officer of the Warwicks (I believe), who stated that he had come to relieve us. Words cannot express the meaning of that word "relief" as it applied to our fellows at that moment. To a war chronicler it cannot but mean much more than a trifling operation, but its effect in our case was that after handing over our little line to the newcomers, we were making our way back down the main ride at a pace that I never would have dreamt tired men capable of. I remember very little about that long journey back, except that as a parting gift we had a direct hit on our tail which killed a number of our men as we were nearing Mametz Village. But well I remember my quartermaster sergeant meeting me somewhere with the words "Thank God! you're all right sir", having a dixie of hot soup and falling off into a dead sleep.
Lieutenant-Colonel Graham Gwyther, commander of the 14th Royal Welsh Fusiliers on his battalion's attack on Mametz Wood on 10 July 1916.

#OTD in Irish History | 18 November:
1657 – Death of Franciscan friar and historian, Luke Wadding, in Rome. Born in Co Waterford, Wadding founded the Pontifical Irish College for Irish secular clergy in Rome. In 1900, Wadding’s portrait and part of his library were in the Franciscan friary on Merchant’s Quay, Dublin. Through Wadding’s efforts, St Patrick’s Day became a feast day. 1703 – The Commons hears a petition from Sir Kildare…

Unlikely friendships between two footbal clubs.
Leyton Orient 🏴 & Edinburgh’s Heart Of Midlothian 🏴
A friendship that dates back the early part of The Great War (1914 ~ 1918). Players of Hearts and then-named Clapton Orient led the way as the first professional footballers to volunteer en-masse for what became known as the “Pals’ Battalions”. Both Battalions suffered terrible losses and heavy casualties, with three Orient players and three Hearts players killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme alone.
To celebrate 150 years of Heart Of Midlothian, next year the Scottish club will host Orient in a pre season friendly at Tynecastle Park. ⚽️
