Jedi Order Bureaucratic Structure
I’ve been working for a while on worldbuilding the inner workings of the Jedi Order. Below is a flowchart of the administrative bodies, their duties, and any other admin bodies they oversee. More details on each below the cut.
These are different groups involved in running the Jedi Order. For different roles within the Jedi, see my Jedi Order Corps and Subdivisions.

So here’s the conception of hell where Imp Taya comes from~
Hell (not its real name, but frequently referred to as such by both locals and outsiders) is an alternate dimension that expands outward indefinitely in all directions. Hell is ever-expanding, and when one domain increases, everything else increases proportionally as well. Each of these are known as “domains”, though “circle”, “ring”, and “district” are often used as well. All of them have residential areas, but are equally populated towards production of certain goods or services.
In the center is the ever-towering city of Pride. Pride is the primary sin, and expands into all the others. This domain is made of enormous skyscrapers and heavy urbanisation, all fitted together precariously in a jumble of walkways and towers, as if each building is growing--and out-growing--from its neighbour. The Pride domain is also the center for the arts and entertainment. Theaters and museums intermingle with the various towers, and Pride is the place to go for the most up-to-date view of Hell. At the very top is Lord Lucifer, who judges everything below in his ivory tower, the oldest construction in Pride.
The surrounding four domains are the sub-cities of Greed, Gluttony, Lust, and Sloth. Each of these is built in a tiered spiral surrounding Pride, spilling their influences into each other while still remaining equal.
Greed is the financial and commercial district. It is the place to make money and to spend money--or whatever you got in Hell to approximate value. The richest and most unscrupulous spend their time in Greed, where there’s always a deal to be made. It’s probably the most organised of the domains, given its need to keep track of deals. As you might expect, Lord Mammon runs a casino here.
Its sister domain, Gluttony, is of course the domain devoted to food and waste production. Gluttony is essentially an enormous food court and open-air market all spilling into each other. Uneaten food becomes waste, and is reprocessed and recycled back into another restaurant’s menu. There is no distinction between kitchen and landfill in Gluttony, they all feed back into each other over and over. The lord of the flies herself, Lady Beelzebub, owns her own buffet here, which she spends all her time patronising.
Such depravity not to your taste? Looking for a different kind of excess to indulge in? Why not drop by the land of Lust, which is home not only to the completely obvious red-light district, but also the creative hub for all of Hell. All creative types end up in Lust, and all their works end up in Pride or sold in Greed. Indeed, it is not merely debauchery that Lust deals in, but artistic pursuits of all varieties. Lust is the land of expression in all things material. They even have an amusement park! Its primary attraction is a nightclub and arcade run by Asmodeus (who eschews both Lord and Lady titles, as an expression of any, all, and yet no gender).
Worn out now? The material no longer satisfying? Then Sloth will welcome you with open arms. Despite what you might think, Sloth is the domain of innovation and industry. If Lust deals in the material, Sloth goes for the immaterial. Sloth expresses itself in ideas, because ideas don’t take the effort of creation. The most clever minds meet in Sloth, spending all their time thinking, while the rest of the domains do the doing. Sloth makes (after)life easier. And if you’re not up for that, then simply find a bed, and we’ll plug you into Sloth’s power grid, harvesting your unspent energy powering the giant battery that fuels the whole rest of the dimension, Matrix-style. How’s that for restful? The penthouse of Sloth’s largest hotel is occupied by Lady Belphegor, who sleeps an eternal dreamless sleep. Don’t be the one to wake her!
Beyond the various city domains are the Wrathful Wastes, the endlessly sprawling badlands, where the outcasts and worst-of-the-worst dwell. This is the stereotypical depiction of Hell, the fire-and-brimstone, the eternal torture, all that jazz. It is essentially Hell’s prison system, since it extends even more indefinitely than the city, and the wild energies block teleportation magic when not inside the city limits. Otherwise, it’s a lawless place without the protection of the agreed-upon niceties inside the sway of the city council. You can get away with anything here, which is why it’s the dumping ground for those the rest of the city doesn’t want. There may be settlements here, but they don’t tend to last long. Rumour has it Lord Satan is training an army out here. Best hope he doesn’t train it against you.
Beneath it all, underground both the city and the wasteland, is the Sea of Envy. Envy is the runoff of every facet of Hell, dripping from every other sin and forming an enormous cavern and endless ocean beneath the entire dimension. The city also uses it as a sewer system, a great pipe maze that all drains into the same sea. It all washes out in Envy. Being entirely underground, there is an ever-present gloom here, and those that end up in Envy often can’t find their way back. The deepest depths of Envy are inhabited by Lady Leviathan, the physically largest of the domain rulers.
So who inhabits these terrible lands, besides the aforementioned seven domain rulers? Well, the lost and the damned, certainly. Those foolish or unlucky enough to wander into its plane of existence, or those condemned to it by their actions or choices in a previous dimension. But mostly, it’s inhabited by demons and devils alike, the natural-born inhabitants of the dimension. These creatures are essentially physical aspects of the domain they’re born into, a literal manifestation of their parent sin.
Though similar, demons and devils are not alike, and will in fact be wildly offended if confused for the other. The easy distinguishment between the two is that demons are chaotic, while devils are lawful. Demons live on impulse behaviour and wild hedonism, and will act on whatever whims will satisfy their sin personally. Devils, on the other hand, are meticulous planners and will play the long game, usually involving tempting others to partake in their particular sin. For example, a demon of Gluttony will take great delight in depriving a mortal creature of eating in favour of satisfying their own craving. A gluttony devil, however, will attempt to get the mortal to indulge in deeper and more concerning gluttonous acts.
Why involve mortals at all? Because of how both creatures feed. Demons and devils (fiends, collectively), despite being physical manifestations of sin, are metaphysical in nature, and don’t feed like mortals do. Instead of gaining energy through frankly a gross display of ingesting food and expelling waste, they absorb it ambiently from the atmosphere, in the form of mortal emotions. Different classes of fiend seek different emotional outputs, but they all desire to invoke a particular emotion in a mortal subject, then “feed” on the results. That’s why they enjoy either tormenting mortals by visiting their home planes and nearby dimensions, or luring them back to Hell as a personal food source. (And yes, while Gluttony is one of the major sins, demons don’t gain nutrition from indulging in it, merely physical pleasure.)
Demons and devils, while in Hell, run on the same caste system, which is largely dictated by magical ability. This itself is typically attributed to physical form and morphology. Namely, their horns. A fiend’s horns are the source by which they draw in and store the ambient magic/emotions they feed on. Larger horns can draw in more at once, and therefore are more powerful. It is not uncommon for fiends with undersized horns to develop horn envy against their more well-endowed peers. If their horns are broken, a fiend cannot feed, and is therefore powerless. This will only make the demon more desperate and dangerous, as they will seek out magical artifacts or other proxies to use instead. Devils will instead make contracts to augment or replace any power source they lack.
While there are a huge host of various types of fiends (and the more powerful a fiend becomes, the more likely it will take on its own unique shape and appearance), three of the most common are imps, succubuses, and balors.
Imps are the lowest rung on the ladder, typically servants of other more powerful fiends. They are also incredibly numerous, and typically hang out together in small gangs for protection. While not especially powerful, imps typically have a wide range of magical abilities, as befitting their nature as tricksters and mischief-makers. Imps feed on the shadenfreude of having caused mischief to someone else: a well-pulled prank leaves a bitter annoyance that imps love, and in a pinch, simply harassing a mortal will satisfy as well. They typically have small bodies and horns, usually with some feature exaggerated to aid in their particular domain’s indulgences. They’re not unintelligent, but they’re extremely childish and impatient, usually satisfying themselves on the short-term.
Succubuses, despite the name, are not regulated solely to the Lust domain. Instead, these are the fiends that most closely resemble human physiology, and can most easily pass among them, usually through some variety of illusion. They gained the reputation for being from the Lust domain because their most sought emotion is temptation. They play a game of seduction to get mortals to give in to their particular domain’s sin and feed on the resulting shame of a successful temptation. Because of their more careful dealings with mortals, these are the fiends most likely to rise in rank and gain new powers.
Balors are the brute class among fiends. Perhaps less intelligent than even the imps, these are the biggest fiends and the most likely to be used by other fiends as soldiers or bodyguards. Typically, these creatures rely only on the simplest solutions, as their particular taste is for the despair that comes from destruction. Most balors live in the Wrathful Wastes, as they’re difficult to control or make obey rules. They’re where the reputation for red, goatlike humanoids come from, as they tend to have the least physiological uniqueness among fiends, being either enormous and muscular (the demons) or skinny and cruel (the devils). Their horns tend to be small, but they can store magic power inside their bodies and expel it phsyically as well.
There are, of course, innumerable other styles and appearances of fiends, but the more unique ones don’t tend to visit the mortal realms as frequently, preferring to carve out their own niche in their particular domain, employing the various lesser fiends around them for tasks. While within their home dimension, a fiend can be sustained indefinitely by the ambient nature of Hell’s own magic. Most fiends are content with this, as dealing with mortals is exhausting and confusing--and potentially dangerous. But every so often, some enterprising young demon finds their way to a nearby dimension and encounters the local mortals. And the most successful of these might find a mortal they can corrupt with offers of power, and bring them back home to Hell to corrupt into a new fiend among their ranks... As once happened to a particular latex-clad monster enthusiast named Taya~

Remove Your Brass Wire Scrap by Receiving Excellent Price and Save Environment
Reputable recycling businesses collect, pick-up, sort and recycle brass scraps such as brass wire scrap, brass fittings scrap and all other types of brass scraps.  They will pay you fairly for all these brass scraps. These companies believe that brass scrap recycling should be done with professional services so that you can avoid brass contamination in the soil and protect against the unlawful activity including illegal brass scrap disposal.  These authorised scrap recyclers collect all forms of scrap brass such as hard brass, red brass, yellow brass, industrial brass, bronze and more. These businesses guarantee they can provide their clients with the chance to engage in an ecologically responsible brass recycling process that pays a fair brass price. They also perform the recycling of other metals such as stainless steel, copper, auto batteries, and more.
Tumblr media
These businesses also collect lead acid batteries scrap by paying fair price for it.  Used lead-acid batteries contain lead, lead compounds and sulphuric acid, all elements that are considered to be hazardous waste. Lead acid batteries scraps can be recycled and repurposed so they can become new products rather than going to waste. Recycling batteries is also beneficial because recycling requires a significantly lower amount of energy than refining virgin ore does.  These businesses can collect your old unwanted batteries and quote a reasonable price based on its condition.  They will collect car and truck batteries scrap, forklift batteries scrap, excavator batteries scrap and more.
Importance of Brass Scrap Recycling:
Verified researches show that disposing of brass scrap in landfills is bad for the environment and increases the need for natural resources. A lot of metal recyclers gather various sorts of brass and pay a decent price for brass scrap with the intention of recycling it because of the value of this metal.  In addition to the recycling industry, the building, plumbing and industrial sectors all value brass as a resource. One of the few metals that may be recycled indefinitely without losing its quality or purity is brass.
In conclusion, metal recyclers collect, sort various types of ferrous and non-ferrous metals by paying fair price. Someone looking for clearing any type of metal scraps can contact a nearby metal recycler.

Dallas County Hazardous Waste
Disposing of Hazardous Waste
The Ultimate Guide to Properly Disposing of Dallas County Hazardous Waste
Dallas County residents face a unique challenge when it comes to proper disposal of hazardous waste. Not only do they need to know how to identify and classify different types of hazardous waste, but they must also be aware of the best methods for disposing of them in order to protect local ecosystems and public health. This guide will provide an in-depth look at all aspects of Dallas County hazardous waste disposal, including identifying common types of hazardous waste, understanding their potential environmental impacts, tips on reducing production at home or work, and where to take them for safe disposal.
Disposing of Hazardous Waste
Identifying Common Types of Hazardous Waste
The first step in disposing of hazardous waste is to identify and classify different types. These can include items like paint, automotive fluids, batteries, electronics, cleaning products, fluorescent bulbs and other household chemicals. Knowing what types of hazardous waste you have will help ensure that they are disposed of properly. For example, if you have motor oil or other automotive liquids, they must be taken to a hazardous waste collection center or a local retailer that offers recycling services for these materials.
Understanding Potential Environmental Impacts
When improper disposal of hazardous waste occurs, it can have serious environmental impacts on local ecosystems and public health. Not only do these materials contain potentially dangerous toxins and pollutants, but they can also contaminate soil and water sources which can put people, plants, and animals at risk. For this reason, it is important to follow the proper disposal guidelines for these materials in order to protect our environment.
Tips on Reducing Production at Home or Work
In addition to properly disposing of hazardous waste, residents of Dallas County can also reduce their production of hazardous materials through smarter practices. This includes purchasing products with minimal packaging, avoiding buying items that contain potentially harmful chemicals such as paint strippers or pesticide sprays, and reusing items whenever possible. Additionally, recycling electronics and other items when they are no longer usable can help minimize the amount of hazardous waste produced in Dallas County.
Where to Take Hazardous Waste for Safe Disposal
Once you have identified and classified your hazardous waste, you must take it to a designated collection center or retailer that offers recycling services. These centers are designed specifically for the disposal of hazardous materials in order to protect public health and local ecosystems from harm. You can find the nearest hazardous waste collection center by visiting the Dallas County Health Department website.
Hazardous waste poses a serious risk to our environment if not disposed of properly. It is important for Dallas County residents to be aware of how to identify different types of hazardous waste, understand their potential environmental impacts, reduce production at home or work, and where they should take these materials for safe disposal. By following the guidelines outlined in this guide, Dallas County residents can ensure that their hazardous waste is disposed of responsibly and our environment remains safe.

The Most Surprising Items That Can’t Be Put in Your Regular Trash or Recycling Bin
Australians love to recycle, but are you as good as you think you are? Too many of us “Wish Cycle” – we want to do the right thing and feel that the more you can recycle, the better. We think it should be recycled, so we put it in our curbside bin. Because really, the less we send to landfill in those red bins, the better right? Wrong! The irony is that, to recycle more, sometimes we must recycle less. Rubbish Removal Kings are here to help and educate you on what you can and cannot recycle.
Cleanaway did a report recently stating that 89% of Australians believe recycling to be an important step in helping our environment, and 74% of those people believe themselves to be good or very good recyclers.
Many of us do participate in some form of sustainable behaviour in our lives. Despite this positive outlook, results from this research suggest that many are misinformed or mistaken about what they can and cannot recycle, harming the environment rather than helping. For example, 47% of Australians think that soft plastic can go into recycling, whilst 26% don’t know that food containers need to be washed and rinsed before going into the recycling bin. Most shocking of all, 15% of Australians think that everything can go into recycling, citing that it will get sorted out at the facility.
As you can see, many of us mean well when it comes to recycling, but a great majority of Australians simply don’t know enough in order to recycle properly. It can be confusing, which is why we’re here to help you curb those bad recycling habits. Here is a list of items that are frequently found in kerbside recycling bins that shouldn’t be there:
Plastic bags
Takeaway coffee cups
Broken glassware or mirrors or glass from photo frames
Batteries
Clothing and other textiles
Food containers that haven’t been rinsed/cleaned
Building materials, such as pieces of timber or bricks
Paper towels
These examples are just some of many. Misconception is our biggest enemy when it comes to recycling, so our best weapon against it is research and proper knowledge of how recycling works. Even equipped with your best intentions, mistakes can be made.
So what can be done with these other materials that don’t normally go into your recycling bin? There are actually many services in place to properly dispose of these pesky items.
Cans can normally be recycled, but a better way to get rid of them is through a container deposit scheme. This program provides a financial incentive to reducing letter, leading to a much cleaner environment for us all, and also clears up some room in landfill.
Believe it or not, batteries can also be recycled, but not in your curbside bin. Australia has an official battery recycling scheme called “B-cycle”, so you can give those dead batteries a new lease on life. With over 100 organisations in Australia where you can recycle your batteries, head to B-cycle and find your nearest drop off location.
Mobile phones can be easily recycled thanks to Mobile Muster, a free mobile phone recycling program that aims to do their job to the highest environmental standards. Empty laser or inkjet cartridges can be dropped at all Officeworks stores.
Lastly, purchasing products that have the Australasian recycling label is a great way to learn how to easily recycle certain products, as they contain clear instructions as to how to properly dispose of this waste.
Now that you know how to recycle with ease, go out there and make Australia a cleaner place for the future. Rubbish Removal Kings are also here to help with any recycling or rubbish removal required. Contact Rubbish Removal Kings for a free quote and book in your rubbish removal today. When it comes to waste disposal and service, no one does it better!

What Are The Benefits Of Recycling Computer Parts?
Tumblr media
Recycling computer parts is not only an environmentally responsible practice, but it also offers a range of benefits that can positively impact society as a whole. As electronic waste continues to grow at an alarming rate, recycling these components can help in conserving precious natural resources by reducing the demand for virgin materials. It also prevents the release of hazardous substances into the environment, ensuring a cleaner and safer world for future generations. Additionally, the process of recycling computer parts creates employment opportunities in the recycling sector, contributing to the economy and promoting a sustainable lifestyle. Furthermore, recycled components can be utilized in the manufacturing of new electronic devices, reducing their overall production costs and making technology more accessible to a broader audience.
Top 5 Benefits Of Recycling Computers
Environmental Protection
Recycling computers helps to protect the environment by reducing the amount of electronic waste that ends up in landfills. Many computer parts contain toxic materials, such as lead and mercury, that can leak into the soil and water supply if not disposed of properly. By recycling computers, we can ensure that these materials are safely removed and reused or disposed of responsibly.
Conservation of Resources
Recycling computers can also help to conserve natural resources. Many computer parts, such as circuit boards and hard drives, contain valuable metals and materials that can be extracted and reused. By recycling these parts, we can reduce the need for new materials to be mined or extracted, which can help to conserve resources and reduce the environmental impact of resource extraction.
Job Creation
Recycling computers can also help to create new jobs in the recycling industry. As more people recognize the importance of recycling electronic waste, there is an increasing demand for workers who can collect, sort, and process these materials. This can help to stimulate economic growth and provide new job opportunities.
Data Security
Properly recycling computers can also help to ensure that sensitive data is securely destroyed. Many computer parts, such as hard drives and memory cards, can contain personal or confidential information that should not be accessible to others. By recycling these parts through a reputable service provider, we can ensure that this data is securely erased.
Cost Savings
Recycling computers can also help to save costs in the long run. Many computer parts, such as batteries and power cords, can be reused in other products or repaired, which can help to save money on replacements. Additionally, many recycling programs are free or low-cost, which can help to save on disposal fees and reduce overall waste management costs.
Why Should We Recycle Computers?
Reduces electronic waste
By recycling computer parts, we can keep these items out of landfills, where they can release harmful chemicals into the environment. Many computer parts, such as batteries and circuit boards, contain hazardous materials that can be dangerous if not disposed of properly. By recycling these items, we can reduce the amount of electronic waste that ends up in landfills and minimize the associated environmental and health risks.
Conserves natural resources
When we recycle computer parts, we can extract valuable materials and reuse them in new products. This reduces the need for new materials to be mined or extracted, which can help to conserve natural resources and reduce the environmental impact of resource extraction.
Creates new jobs
Recycling computer parts can also help to create new jobs in the recycling industry. As more people recognize the importance of recycling electronic waste, there is an increasing demand for workers who can collect, sort, and process these materials.
Promotes sustainability
Recycling computer parts is an important part of promoting sustainability and reducing our impact on the environment. By reusing materials and minimizing waste, we can create a more sustainable future for ourselves and future generations.
Why Recycling Your Old Computer Equipment Is Crucial For The Environment.
It's tempting to just toss your old computer equipment into the trash and forget about it. Unfortunately, this is what many people do, and it's contributing to the growing problem of toxic landfills. Electronics and computers contain a variety of hazardous materials, such as lead, cadmium, lithium, and mercury. Dumping them into the environment is both dangerous and illegal under European WEEE regulations.
However, recycling IT equipment and electronics is now easier than ever. Not only does it benefit the environment, but it also helps to make computing more accessible to everyone by putting refurbished computers back into the marketplace at an affordable price.
As a certified electronics recycler, Absolute IT Group can help you dispose of your electronic waste in an environmentally responsible manner. Whether you need to arrange a collection or simply want to learn more about our e-waste services, we're here to help. Let's work together to protect the planet and create a more sustainable future.

Study: Availability of 27 raw materials "very critical"
Tumblr media
Electric vehicle and alternative energy applications for copper could strain global supplies of the red metal.
The growing demand for raw materials, the high prices and the dependence on individual countries are worrying the economy. The Research Institute of German Industry (IW Consult) assesses the availability of 27 important metals, minerals and rare earths as "very critical". Many of these raw materials are necessary for digitisation and the energy transition.
IW Consult[1] Managing Director Karl Lichtblau said on Friday 9-12 when the study was presented in Munich: "The markets for raw materials are still working." However, there are risks if you are heavily dependent on individual producing countries or suppliers. From Russia, for example, Germany gets a lot of nickel, which is important for batteries and steel alloys, as well as palladium for electrical engineering and the chemical industry. "Commodity trading with Russia is still ongoing," in contrast to gas imports, Lichtblau said.
But "the sometimes difficult geopolitical situation is making it increasingly difficult to obtain raw materials," said Bertram Brossardt, general manager of the Bavarian Business Association (vbw)[2]. Dependencies could be used as leverage in conflicts, "then it becomes a serious problem."
In the study commissioned by vbw, IW Consult cites copper as an example of the rapidly growing demand for raw materials. The energy transition will increase demand by 40 to 75 percent by 2030 and by as much as 165 percent by 2040. Copper is not scarce geologically, but investments must be made in mining, recycling and raw material efficiency, and high demand drives up prices, said Lichtblau. The biggest challenge "will be to adapt the conveyor and processing chains quickly enough to the growing demand," said Brossardt.
One of the largest sources of CO2 is cement production - 8 percent of global CO2 emissions are attributable to the manufacture of this building material, more than half of it in China. The CO2 produced during cement production could be captured and stored and the recycling of construction waste could be improved, Lichtblau said. There is now also carbon concrete. But "of course that drives up the construction costs".
"Recycling is a big issue," emphasized Lichtblau. That has to start with product development. In the case of cobalt, for example, a third of consumption can be saved through the circular economy.

Juniper Journal’s 6.26.22 “Regenerative Generation”
We are the Regenerative Generation We seek the green that plagues these nations Not the fumes that fuel the clouds with toxic rain In their cycle of perpetual pain We seek the financial envy of our neighbor’s pastures The weeds and dreams and deals To keep our gardens wild Fire brick tiled And painted without human hands and coal-stained cough Hack the ridges, bare bushed like the magazines Tossed in the trash after enduring months Of perverted self-flagellation
We are the Regenerative Generation We are the takers of time to mend our Bruises, cuts, barethreaded clothes and relationships Watchers of our parents’ failure to reduce impact With belts, racquets, and carbon footprints Reuse their friendships, their shopping bags, and compost And find new ways to recycle the love that was wasted On unloving families We are giving it away on the edge of driveways, Drive-ins, and quick-sift thrift stores overcharging For undercharged batteries, hand-me-down survivors Of assault and parental battery
We are the Regenerative Generation Who are filled with an exorbitantly high volume of rage For individuals of our stature At the dreaded, hopeful, destined morning Prepared for the coming clause That will rip into tomorrow’s rising sun Bright and warm and full Filling our sight and stomachs With parenthetical hypotheticals Subcategories specifications to circumnavigate Any and all what if’s While we spend our free time volunteering Admiring the admonished and impoverished With street art, street walks, street service food
We are the Regenerative Generation Too sick and tired of the fading grasses Running in a direction we were told, We hope, is forward Without fear of what has come and What will follow Heading headlong into the headlines Make way! Our bleeding knee caps have healed Time spent as two-bit half-wit skater kid photographers Well spent, ill spent, unspent youth We’re rigging this coin toss Our wounds have almost healed, And we’ve bandages to spare for you We were the Degenerate Generation We spanned across all nations The days behind will haunt us, If we let them come again Our hands  are green and red and black and brown From blood and ash and soil and seedlings Fire in the skies and red flashing lights Selling me a faster way to burn, and We’re still mending, rending the rulebooks Rather than idly sitting by idols We are moving, if not forward, then in any direction That isn’t standing still We are the Regenerative Generation We seek all that plagues each nation

TAFAKKUR: Part 174
Little-Known Rare-Earth Elements
Will there be wars over elements like there have been over petroleum and water? What element have we been using in color televisions? What substance is used to make energy saving, environmental light bulbs?
Each of the elements found in the periodic table have their own characteristics. After they have been cooked in the pot of the universe, these substances that are offered to our service can be radioactive (like uranium), metallic (like magnesium) and even gaseous (like helium). Seventeen of the elements not easily found among the layers underground have unique properties. These elements are called rare-earth elements, because it is hard to discover and mine them.
Rare-earth elements are in many of our everyday devices. The data projected on a computer screen is transmitted via optic cables containing erbium. The light of a tablet device is generated by the phosphorescent element europium. We actually touch indium covered surfaces when we scroll our fingers on touch screen monitors. When listening through headphones, we are using neodymium magnets that are ten times stronger than iron magnets.
From space technologies to defense industries, from cell phones to LED lighting, many such rare-earth elements are used in every stage of our lives. These elements – many of which we cannot live without, even though we've never heard of them – were recorded into the Critical Materials Strategy Document published by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2010. In a public announcement, the department declared fourteen of the elements as specially significant regarding clean energy, listed six of them as critical, and the other four as near critical. Fifteen elements, beginning with lanthanum and ending with lutetium, numbered between 57 and 71, comprise lanthanides. Combined with scandium and yttrium, these make up the seventeen rare-earth elements.
The elements that we touch on screens
Indium (atomic number 49) gains the properties of electrical conductivity and optic transparency when combined with tin, which, at number 50, is indiums's neighbor on the periodic table. Optical transparency is a desired property for plasma screen and television technologies. Indium is also an important material for mobile phone touchscreens. Interestingly, when indium combines with cadmium, also as a neighbor at number 48, it loses the optical transparency. Instead, it is able to absorb light. Light harvesting is a very critical feature in the production of solar cells.
The relationship of indium with its two neighbors opens new horizons for scientists. In the near future, it is hoped that many unknown and interesting features will be unearthed by investigating the known elements of the periodic table. It is amazing that these elements have been around for thousands of years in the universe only to be discovered by technological advancements.
The need for rare-elements in the world is around fifty thousand tons. The current recorded reserve for rare-earth elements is 110 Million tons. Currently, 95% of the demand for rare-earth elements is supplied by China, yet the country only has 35% of the world's reserves. Therefore scientists are constantly searching for rare-earth element mines to eliminate the Chinese monopoly and to boost the production of these rare materials. In recent years, China has gotten into political debates with Japan and the United States by curbing rare-earth element exports. Economic journals covering these debates wondered if "element wars" were near. In 2010, a massive reserve of elements, enough to sustain worldwide demand, was discovered in the Pacific Ocean. Developed countries are now planning to recycle rare-earth elements from used devices due to low reserves.
Yttrium, europium, and terbium (atomic numbers 39, 63 and 65) have been known for a long time. Terbium and yttrium are named after the Swedish town of Ytterby. Yttrium is the first rare-earth element discovered, at the end of 18th century. Plastics containing europium are used to make laser products; it's also used as an element to provide the red color on television screens. Yttrium has a supplementary role that enhances europium's red color production. And terbium oxide activates the green phosphorescence of television tubes with its yellow-green phosphorescent property.
Terbium also enables an 80% reduction of energy consumption in light bulbs. This makes it one of the most wanted elements in the $2 billion rare-earth element market. Today, when we purchase class A type light bulbs, we are actually buying rare elements like terbium.
Neodymium (number 60), which emits a green light via laser pointers, is also used in the magnets of electric motors. When neodymium combines with boron and iron, it makes a magnet twelve times stronger than simple iron magnets. Because it is significantly less dense than iron, it makes electric motors and laptop computers much lighter. Another interesting feature of neodymium is that it enhances the data storage capacity of hard drives. Furthermore, neodymium is wanted for electrical devices and wind turbines.
The union of elements
Dysprosium was discovered in 1886 and can never be found in a free form in nature. This is because it exists in a compound form with other minerals, like gadolinite. Dysprosium is also known for its magnetic property, and when mixed with terbium and iron, it forms a substance called Terfenol-D. In a magnetic field, Terfenol-D has unique transformational abilities. Dysprosium is utilized in laser production together with vanadium, and it emits infrared radiation when used with cadmium.
The magnetic alloys of iron, boron, and neodymium lose their magnetic features beyond 300 degrees Celsius. However when this alloy is combined with dysprosium at a 5% ratio, that problem disappears. Therefore, these magnets are used for electric turbines and hard disc motors. Dysprosium also makes magnets in electric motors 95% lighter. And dysprosium and nickel mixed fillings are used as cooling rods in nuclear reactors.
The human mind becomes fascinated after seeing all the wisdom and properties involved in these lifeless elements. Either we conclude that these elements have doctorate degrees in physics and chemistry from Harvard University, or we may express our weakness and fascination in front of The Grand Creator who created and presented these elements for our benefit.
Is the yellow color in glasses from the planet Ceres?
Since Dell recalled four million laptop computers in 2006, because of a possible explosion caused by overheating battery, scientists' eyes have been focused on lanthanum and cerium. These two elements are considered to be safer than other alternatives. Lanthanum and cerium are used in electrical equipment and energy saving light bulbs, and are classified as critical elements in these processes, along with tellurium. Cerium, named after the planet Ceres, is responsible for the yellow coloration in glasses. Cerium is also used in polishes, ceramics, and petrol refineries. Tellurium is produced indirectly, unlike most other elements. The production of cadmium takes place during zinc production, and tellurium during copper refining. Tellurium is a cheaper element that has been used in combination with cadmium on solar cells since 2009; before then, most solar cells used expensive silicon panels.
Elements in our lives, from space rockets to ultrasound imaging
Hafnium, tantalum, erbium, and technetium are important elements, even though they are not listed critical. Even though hafnium and technetium are not rare-earth elements, they were still added to the critical material strategy document produced by the US Department of Energy. Hafnium is employed in space rockets for its resistance against extreme temperatures and wearing. Hafnium oxide is a valuable material for electronic transistors since it is a very effective electric insulator. It is 20% faster than the silicon oxide that is commonly used in transistors. A transistors length is around 65 nanometers when silicon oxide is used, but it is only 32 nanometers with transistors made of hafnium oxide. This 50% decrease enables smaller devices.
Touchscreens containing indium, laptop computers powered by lithium ion batteries, and cell phones with hafnium transistors are some of today's technological wonders. Would these inventions still be possible without these elements? Could we reach the high capacities in hard discs without the tantalum? Would we be able to protect ourselves from electric leakage in computers without high quality electric insulators such as tantalum oxide?
Radioactive technetium, which was discovered in 1937, is the first artificially produced element. The technetium 99 isotope is used in nuclear medicine. Technetium produced from uranium has a half life of 211,000 years, as opposed to the 6 hour half life of the technetium 99 isotope. The number of technetium based nuclear medicinal tests, like ultrasounds and x-ray imaging, is estimated to be above thirty million annually.
We take advantage of these elements in every stage of our lives, from medicine to technology. Could we become dependent upon elements the way we are upon petroleum? Only time will tell. Either these elements will be replaced by other materials, or other technologies will outdate the current technologies. It is also possible new elements will be discovered.
A majority of our modern technologies would not exist without these elements that were dispersed among the earth billions of years ago. These elements were placed here for our benefit, and so we could utilize them, and produce institutes of scientific research and education to study them.

Hey it’s the anon about FALC from earlier. Thank you for explaining, it really helps me to get a grasp on things. I suppose my question would be then, what sort of personal electronics do you think we’d retain, and what sorts of electronics do you think would become more communal? Like, what would an ecological but also technological future look like from a socialist perspective? (1)
You mentioned space based solar before, do you think it’s feasible? I think there’s massive potential there but also complications. A lot of my issues with renewable energy come from distribution and storage. I heard about certain storage methods such as geothermal, hydroelectric, concentrated solar etc. - do you think these would be viable? I understand you’re not an expert but I see so much soft anti-civ on tumblr that it’s hard to come across someone who repudiates it constructively. (2)
I think most of the time I tend to fall into a very defeatist narrative where most modern comforts would have to be left behind to conserve energy. I agree wrt to smartphones but I don’t know what (or if) they would be replaced with. And while I do think things will have to change dramatically, I am unsure as to how society would look, what sorts of personal property would be available, and what sort of public luxury we would gain access to. Anyway thank you again! (3)
-------------------------
What electronics would we retain? - I believe that the disabled and chronically ill should be given the greatest priority for such resources. Thus blood sugar monitors, electric wheelchairs, CPAP machines, and similar devices would be high-priority as their removal would have a disproportionate impact on the quality of life for the people who need them in comparison to non-essential devices for the able bodied population.  Power tools and kitchen appliances can be distributed on temporary basis from a library like system, reducing the number of individual units required to service a community in the non-professional context. Similarly entertainment devices - including electronic musical devices - can be centralized into “Free Theatres / Studios” and so on.
Disposable electronics would be scrapped for parts which could be recycled to produce longer lasting electronics. Individual ownership of non-essential personal electronics (computers, etc) would fall into the same system as the distribution of non-essential luxury goods. Electronics repair specialists (like me) would effectively be part of an artisan guild or union depending on the specific flavor of red our post-capitalist society takes on.
Space Based Solar - I believe that the future requires a diverse approach to the subject of renewable energy. However I believe that Japan specifically is working on building such arrays as we speak.  Energy Storage - Further decentralization of a renewable energy grid will reduce our dependency on energy storage. You don’t need as much backup for a cloudy day when you have a diverse grid of varying renewable types connected across many geographic regions.  Second the means of storing solar specifically are going to be different from other forms of renewable energy. However on the specific subject of Solar I’m very interested to see the future of molten salt. However for general renewable energy I believe that hydroelectric reservoirs are still currently the most efficient choice for large populations.  You can read about water batteries here to see what I’m talking about.  https://www.hydropower.org/sites/default/files/publications-docs/the_worlds_water_battery_-_pumped_storage_and_the_clean_energy_transition_2.pdf
Comforts & Public Access Goods - As a general rule the majority of comforts don’t need to be abandoned, they need to be reshaped. We didn’t use massive amounts of rare earth metals for telephones until they became the throwaway mini-computers required by almost every employer.  Take your currently existing consumer electronics. Look at how their function was achieved before the 1980s. Chances are you can find some examples that are substantially more environmentally friendly. With a little imagination you can probably also figure out how it could be transferred into a community rather than individual resource.  Even with production technology a move away from capitalist megamarkets allows us to embrace slower and cleaner methods of production. My family was big on fiber arts for example, and had spinning wheels and looms that had been used for generations. Moving away from capitalism allows us to resurrect artisan guilds to organize the production of such goods outside modern industrial centralization.  I think the bigger problem that pulls people into the defeatist mindset is the complete lack of artisan skills in their life. It’s hard to imagine building a new world when the entire concept of “Building Something” is reserved for factories in Indonesia or your dads shitty porch he build during a midlife crisis.
