I joked about how the Ace attorney Universe has like 11 tokusatsu shows while most franchises have 1, but to be honest, it’s one of my favorite things about the AA universe. It adds so much depth to the world but also the characters. (spoilers across the mainline games + the investigation games + anime)

Like originally, the Steel Samurai case was supposed to be just a filler game in between 2 very important cases.

But then Suekane made that comic where Edgeworth was secretly a Steel Samurai fan and that gave Takumi the idea to completely reinvent the character of Edgeworth and make him sympathetic and give him a redemption arc. 

Edgeworth then became someone who was forced to grow up quickly, whose childhood was ripped away from him. And despite his cold exterior, he allowed himself one childish thing, the Steel Samurai.  Someone, who despite taking his job very seriously and having a reputation, has a statue of the Steel Samurai in his office.

And that’s a parallel to Maya, who is forced to grow up quickly so that she can become the Master of Kurain. But with her Steel Samura obsession, we are reminded that she is still a teenager.

And that leads us to the events of Farewell, my Tournabout, where they introduced not only an annual contest of tokusatsu shows, but six new tokusatsu shows, two of which were the Jammin’ Ninja and the Nickel Samurai. They showed a rivalry between the two shows and the actors which in my opinion adds so much more depth to the AA universe, to know that people in that world have options of shows they can watch and that there’s a rivalry similar to DC vs Marvel (without the murder).

And then in Investigations, they added to that by making Kay a Jammin’ Ninja fan and making her contrast with Edgeworth and by making Edgeworth’s love for the Steel Samurai so important, that he solved a big case with it.

And Investigations 2 (spoilers!!) added even more to it because they took one of the characters from the Heroes of Heroes Grand Prix, the  Global Hero Onyankopon and they gave him a sworn enemy called Zurvan. They gave Simon Keyes a tshirt with the Onyankopon logo on it, and they gave Blaise Debeste a Zurvan mask, which foreshadowed their relationship.

And even if Simon Keyes himself is not a Global Hero Onyankopon fan himself, it’s still interesting that Onyankopon is popular enough that people wear his iconography on shirts, the same way people in our world wear Batman, Superman or Spider-Man t-shirts without necessarily being fans of the comics or the movies.

In Spirit of Justice, they introduce the Plumed Punisher, a hero beloved by the people of Khura’in but hate by Miles Edgeworth. Was it really a rip-off of the Steel Samurai or was it more like an international remake, where a show is made for a different audience and adapted for the local culture? Who is the say. The clash of culture is very interesting tho. It reminds me of when they made a Spider-Man live-action in Japan but made it a mecha show instead.

Then the adaptations added to it.

The anime created the Signal Samurai. A show that Miles, Phoenix and Larry bonded over when they were. The were the Signal Samurai Trio and they got matching key rings. Miles and Phoenix kept their keyrings even in adulthood, symbolizing their everlasting bond.

It also created the Rainbow samurai. A show that Phoenix watched in middle school after Miles had left while Larry had grown over samurai shows. It symbolized how Phoenix still felt connected to Miles while Larry viewed their friendship as something from the past

And the stage plays used it as the setting of the plot of 2 different plays.  Turnabout Spotlight, the first stage play, was set at a Steel Samurai stage play. Talk about meta. And Turnabout Teleportation, the Investigations stage play, was set on the film set of a tokusatsu show called Psychic Academy Σ.

Idk, as someone who interacts a lot with geeky media, I love to see how characters interact with the geeky media that exist in the world, and how that world is shaped by said geeky media.

So. Square that mystery away. why are the flashbacks of mikey alone in japan different from the other flashback style? Well aside to just communicate tone and atmosphere (which they do). This stuff. Eastman's annotations also mention possible influence from the unmade 'final turtles story', (the idw ult collection pub. 2012) which very first conceptions seem to be very old, and is now the last ronin, 2020.

They really had me, with this one. Cause time travel IS A THING. The turtles can do. AND this was published after the turtles 1st cross over with Usagi Yojimbo, and (i didnt include any but) many dinosaur like animals are shown in the art. Like in that comic, tho clearly the inhabitants are human people, not anthro animals. And even, this plot in some ways resembled the third live action turtles movie. The Real Answer?
