It was a bit hard to choose, because a lot of fics might have a violent or aggressive Bruce (especially within sexual dynamics), but I tried to limit it to fics where Bruce is particularly possessive, jealous or obsessive, and overtly displaying that over Joker... which led to the inclusion of some downright dark!Bruce fics, fair warning. Honestly this fic feels like the fic that all Batjokes shippers should all read. It's like the initiation fic for entering this community. The plot revolves around the rehabilitation of joker, and a lot more things actually. it's just a very good fic overall, though I wanna give you a word of warning it is unfinished but read it anyways it's too good too pass really.

This fic I read every Christmas from now on, very lovely, very dearly beloved, first amnesiac Batjokes fic I ever read. You should read it. It's so good!

This had me sobbing in the middle of the night, literally out right crying into my pillow like a wee lad, incredibly bittersweet. If you want retirement batjokes this is brilliant, no spoiler for the ending just read it.

Very, very sweet fic. a must read as well, honestly don't wanna spoil any of the plots of any of these fics.

Distort-opia on AO3 : Honestly I feel as though I have read every batjokes fic of theirs, I love their flavor of batjokes, such dark obsessive longing but also I very sweet.

You know, I've never really been one to ship batjokes even though I like fucked up romance. Dark!Superman, Two Face, Lex Luthor, his adopted children, I'm happy to explore the horror that would naturally come about from putting Bruce in any of those relationships for a time, and considering batjokes is not only huge but also way more fucking horrifying than any of those, one would think I'd spring for it, but... I don't know. The Joker's always felt like he was better used as a plot device for other bat-ships rather than to actually explore whatever he has going on. Maybe because Bruce has 0% chance of feeling any sliver of affection for him to twist into the fray (in my personal opinion)? That's probably it. What's the point of a good old fashioned toxic abuse couple if there isn't something compelling the victim to stay.

Anyway I reread Like Magnesium We Burn right around the same time I rewatched the BTAS episode "the man who killed batman" and Death in the Family clips, and goddamnit ig that was the perfect lightning storm to strike something up because I am starting to see the vision and it is consuming me a little bit

Bruce doesn't need to have conflicting feelings of affection and horror. All he needs to feel is pure, primal, animalistic fear as the Joker commits the most heinous acts known to man to both him and his loved ones - tortures and kills his kids - and his city with zero remorse, but dresses Bruce's wounds if he looks like he needs help and gives him a place to sleep and refuses to ever actually fucking kill him. Help help help help help. I still don't get most of you I think but I kind of get it now.

How did they get there. How did it start. Could Bruce have had any fucking clue just how bad it would get. What does the Joker even care about. What about Harley, was she ever able to tell in the midst of the fog of abuse and codependence that that thing existed long before she was there and would continue after she was gone, that she never even mattered to him, that the Joker only ever viewed her as a stepping stone to this goal he had decided he wanted to achieve long ago and could never be swayed from by someone like her, maybe by anybody. (She should hit him with her baseball bat.) Why is he like that - don't give me the one-bad-day shtick I'll kill you. Was there ever anyone else. Why is Batman The One to him. Does the answer even mean anything now.

Hey! You can see a collection of stories I liked here. ('Gotham' folder features fics based on a TV show). Most fics are from AO3, but there are quite a lot of them from LiveJournal. When getting into a new fandom, I tend to research its history and I hunt down old and less known works.

My biggest favorites are these (you can find all of them via the link above):

Beneath the Surface: Nolan verse. Bruce meets a man and starts a relationship with him without realizing it's Joker.

Immediate and Morbid Curiosity: Nolan verse. Bruce is dining in a restaurant when he notices a man who looks just like Joker with no make-up. Joker sees him watching and develops his own curiosity.

Repetitio Est Mater Studiorum: a classic. Batman relives the same day (mostly with Joker) and tries to do something to change their relationship and its fatal destination.

Half-Way Across: it's also a classic, so I'm sure anyone in this fandom read it. Joker agreeing to be rehabilitated.

Made for the Journey: Apocalypse AU, with Batman and Joker unable to let each other go.

I'm gonna butt in here with someone who has a few fics in the top 5 of their ships and say that selecting fics based on kudos to hits ratio is fucking stupid.

Let's look at my most popular fic, which is a batjokes fic. There are currently 3352 fics for it in ao3, so it's a decently sized fandom. My fic has 13 chapters, and at the time of writing this it has 121 844 hits and 5776 kudos. Sorting by kudos, it's the 4th most popular fic in the batjokes fandom. Going by bookmarks, second. Looking at those metrics, it's safe to say it did something right and people like it, so people sorting by kudos or bookmarks are more likely to click on it. It's probably on a few rec lists, too.

But looking at the kudos to hits ratio? That's not a one kudos per ten hits ratio. That's not even a one kudos for twenty hits ratio. Why? Because people clicked on the fic and didn't like it, it's a 143k fic so reading it takes time, I didn't publish it at once so people who followed it from chapter one had to click on it at least 13 times, people re-read it, and people just don't kudos fic even if they like it.

The kudos to hits ratio is not a good metric to estimate whether this fic is good or not. The only way for you to decide if this fic -- that has very specific tropes so it didn't have a ton of competition in its category when I posted it as far as I could tell -- is something you might enjoy, is looking at the summary and tags.

If you start selecting fics based on how many kudos to hits it has, you are going to lose on so many gems. You are going to miss out on new fics, on multi chapter fics, on niche fics, on fics people come to reread time and time again. Just read the summaries and tags. You'll find your favorites that way, I promise.

actually that ao3 post about calculating kudos-to-hits ratios to decide if a fic is worth reading has me so pissed off. someone put real time and energy into something they are SHARING WITH YOU FOR FREE on a site where you can quite literally filter and search by anything you want and you're STILL trying to find a foolproof method to find stuff that's "good enough to read"???

YOU ARE NOT THE TARGET AUDIENCE FOR EVERYTHING

you don't have to like or read everything in a given fandom or tag, but you also don't have to be a cunt about it and imply that it's not worth reading. this is the kind of shit that moves people to stop creating altogether, and to see people agreeing in the tags is so disheartening. absolutely unserious behavior.
