Endlessly captivated by the stories where the Joker is just as horrible and cruel and incomprehensible as he usually is - seriously, not a part of him has softened, possibly because there's nothing to soften - but he still goes out of his way to put the Bat back together when he's broken, and he will pretend to be just (JUST) as fine and thoughtful and calm as he needs to be to make it happen. Make no mistake, though, if it had been anyone else, he would have shattered them on purpose.

Hey! You can see a collection of stories I liked here. ('Gotham' folder features fics based on a TV show). Most fics are from AO3, but there are quite a lot of them from LiveJournal. When getting into a new fandom, I tend to research its history and I hunt down old and less known works.

My biggest favorites are these (you can find all of them via the link above):

Beneath the Surface: Nolan verse. Bruce meets a man and starts a relationship with him without realizing it's Joker.

Immediate and Morbid Curiosity: Nolan verse. Bruce is dining in a restaurant when he notices a man who looks just like Joker with no make-up. Joker sees him watching and develops his own curiosity.

Repetitio Est Mater Studiorum: a classic. Batman relives the same day (mostly with Joker) and tries to do something to change their relationship and its fatal destination.

Half-Way Across: it's also a classic, so I'm sure anyone in this fandom read it. Joker agreeing to be rehabilitated.

Made for the Journey: Apocalypse AU, with Batman and Joker unable to let each other go.

Somewhere between Love and Abuse: Joker falling for Bruce Wayne.

LMAO so my OTP is Scriddler but we have two alters in the headspace whose OTP is Batjokes. I don’t front for a few short weeks and suddenly—on the AO3 account that I created i.e. is MINE—over half of our bookmarks are Batjokes 😭 like you dare come into MY home and disrespect the sanctity of Scriddler?? Summary:

Batman and the Joker are perched along the edges of a precarious and complicated affair when an old enemy returns to Gotham. The adversary's desires for revenge against Bruce Wayne have only strengthened with time. This forces the two enemies on a wild goose chase, and to confront their relationship head on, whether they’re ready or not.

You know, I've never really been one to ship batjokes even though I like fucked up romance. Dark!Superman, Two Face, Lex Luthor, his adopted children, I'm happy to explore the horror that would naturally come about from putting Bruce in any of those relationships for a time, and considering batjokes is not only huge but also way more fucking horrifying than any of those, one would think I'd spring for it, but... I don't know. The Joker's always felt like he was better used as a plot device for other bat-ships rather than to actually explore whatever he has going on. Maybe because Bruce has 0% chance of feeling any sliver of affection for him to twist into the fray (in my personal opinion)? That's probably it. What's the point of a good old fashioned toxic abuse couple if there isn't something compelling the victim to stay.

Anyway I reread Like Magnesium We Burn right around the same time I rewatched the BTAS episode "the man who killed batman" and Death in the Family clips, and goddamnit ig that was the perfect lightning storm to strike something up because I am starting to see the vision and it is consuming me a little bit

Bruce doesn't need to have conflicting feelings of affection and horror. All he needs to feel is pure, primal, animalistic fear as the Joker commits the most heinous acts known to man to both him and his loved ones - tortures and kills his kids - and his city with zero remorse, but dresses Bruce's wounds if he looks like he needs help and gives him a place to sleep and refuses to ever actually fucking kill him. Help help help help help. I still don't get most of you I think but I kind of get it now.

How did they get there. How did it start. Could Bruce have had any fucking clue just how bad it would get. What does the Joker even care about. What about Harley, was she ever able to tell in the midst of the fog of abuse and codependence that that thing existed long before she was there and would continue after she was gone, that she never even mattered to him, that the Joker only ever viewed her as a stepping stone to this goal he had decided he wanted to achieve long ago and could never be swayed from by someone like her, maybe by anybody. (She should hit him with her baseball bat.) Why is he like that - don't give me the one-bad-day shtick I'll kill you. Was there ever anyone else. Why is Batman The One to him. Does the answer even mean anything now.

this might be a way too specific request but thought i’d try my luck anyway. i absolutely LOVE how you’ve written harley and the joker’s dynamic in ‘induced labour’ where they have this platonic friendship but it’s complicated by their history and has a little bit of darkness while still being so funny. i was wondering if you’d seen similar dynamics in any other fics with harley and the joker and had any recs? (the whole fic is incredible by the way, so funny!)

Thank you so much! 💖 I feel like my thoughts about Joker and Harley's relationship have changed a lot over the years, but yeah, I've settled into leaving in the complications because that's more interesting to me than the "girl-buddy" never-romantic Lego Batman route. Which isn't to say I've never enjoyed that dynamic, just that it's never fit for what I personally want to write. (And then there's the Good Victim Harley route, which... no thanks.)

Unfortunately, my fic reading habits are sporadic and highly batjokes-based, so my recommendations for Harley and Joker relationships mostly revolve around Joker and Bruce. 🤷‍♀️ But here are some:

Teamwork by Dracze — This is actually a Harley Quinn/Wonder Woman fic. Joker helps engineer the two meeting.

In Which Jack and Damian Walk into a Bank by MargueritePoretesDefenseAttorney — Part of a larger universe with a disguised, reformed-ish Joker in a relationship with Bruce. But Joker has difficulty staying under the radar when he comes face to face with Harley. More of an antagonistic dynamic.

Learning A New Dance by the_tilly — A long fic in which Joker decides to go after Bruce Wayne to make Batman jealous. Harley appears sporadically throughout, first to offer support, then as a dose of reality.
