Machine Memories- Day 15: Draft

Summary:

Jane has a bright new idea... She just hopes it can make the cut.

Rating: G/PG

Jane's pencil danced across the page like a pirouetting ballerina. Her lunch lay abandoned at her side; leftover tuna salad wasn’t too appealing anyways. She had just gotten into the groove of a new design, and the inspiration was practically spilling out of her and into the lead on the paper. Eating could wait.

A little curl here, some shading there. Maybe she should add a hat. What kind of hat? Jane couldn't see her creation being the type to wear any sort of cloche. A dress was also out of the question, Carley was more practical than that. She was a part of the butcher gang, after all. Or, going to be.

Jane eventually decided on a bowler hat. She adjusted the hair to resemble horns; it definitely matched Bendy now. 

What was next? She carefully crafted a sleeveless top and pants, somewhat resembling Boris's overalls. Perhaps she could throw in a bit of lipstick like Alice Angel wore. Finally, she blocked out her oversized boots and spent at least five minutes fixing her gloves and fingers.

There. Perfect. She had her final draft. Jane held it up and admired her piece with a bright smile. Now all that was left to do was submit her idea to Mr. Drew. Her heart gave a little flutter. She hoped he liked the idea.

The page was ripped from her hands. Jane whirled around to find a trio of her coworkers snickering at her drawing. They'd been doing that all week, and she had learned to block it out after a while. But now, they'd decided to confront her.

"So this is what you've been doing all week," The curly haired brunet holding the page sneered at her. "Is this your little fan project? You're really still at it?"

"Give it back, Daniel," Jane snapped icily and lunged forward. He stepped back and held it out of her reach.

"It's never going to work, Jane," Kim piped up, batting her false lashes at her. "Best not to waste your breath, hon."

"Carley will work," Jane combatted and reached up on her tiptoes to try and snag the drawing. Daniel was a full foot taller than her and barely even had to try warding her off.

"You're not special, Jane," Daniel replied. "Nor is your little cloudy friend here. Mr. Drew isn't going to bat an eye at this. You think we haven't tried? He doesn't listen to any of us."

"She's a ghost," Jane corrected, fighting hard to hold back tears. She wouldn't give them the pleasure of seeing her reaction. Was that true? Would Mr. Drew not care?

"Oh, that's cool," Richard complimented, eyes glued to her drawing. Daniel and Kim shot him a poisonous look. He quickly ducked his head and shut his mouth with a squeak.

"We're just trying to help you out here, Jane. This isn't going to work. Better to crush those dreams before they even start." With that, Daniel crumpled up the drawing in his fist.

Jane felt like her soul had been stomped on. Daniel tossed it onto the ground with a dismissive side glance. "Look, it's amusing. Cute, even. But big ideas are... not for you." With that, he turned and sauntered back to his table. Kim followed him like a lost puppy, giggling all the way. She was such a suck up...

Richard eyed his friends before reaching down and picking up her drawing. Jane steeled herself for more humiliation.

The young man only straightened out the drawing to the best of his ability and gave it a smile before handing it back to her. "Um... I think Carley is pretty cool," He said lowly, if a bit sheepishly. "I think you should show it to Mr. Drew."

Jane blinked. Was she hallucinating? "What...?"

"Your idea," He clarified with a bit more confidence. 

"Oh..." Jane murmured and held the drawing closer to her chest. So she wasn't imagining that. "Thank you."

Richard brightened up a little and the tension in his face faded. It only lasted for a split second before a shout made him stiff as a statue.

"Rich!" Daniel was staring at them now with an irate grimace. Kim was looking over his shoulder in curiosity. "Your food is getting cold."

"Coming!" Richard called before giving Jane a light smile. "Good luck.”

Jane was left standing there, frustration, despondence, and relief mingling around in her head. She looked back down at her drawing. The wrinkles threw off her proportions and angles, but Carley was still there despite it all.

One day Carley would come to fruition. Maybe not now, maybe not a month from now… But one day. She wasn’t going anywhere until it happened.

some character design practice with studio folk

Carley was originally created in 1935 by an employee of Joey, this woman is known as Jane Todd. The artist was very passionate about her character Carley and created her in nearly two months of the butcher gangs debut episode.

The young woman showed her co-workers her character who she was very proud of and adored the ghost.

She was extremely disappointed and upset after her co-workers crumpled up her drawings. Jane tried to ignore their 'critiques' and remained determined as she strives to make her character join the Butcher Gang and bring her into the Bendy shows. She was successful after she built the courage to show Drew her character a year after its creation. (1936)

Drew himself seemed reluctant but his daughter was ecstatic. The young girl absolutely adored Carley, and would continuously bug Drew about the ghost being in the show. Jane was overwhelmed with joy when the girl went on and on about how much she adored Carley and even drew fanart for Jane.

Joey soon welcome Jane’s character after many many begs from his daughter. The woman was surprised but overloaded with happiness. She often bragged to the co-workers who discouraged her.

The ghosts debut was in October of 1936, her episode being named 'Phasmophobia'. In said episode, it’s a Halloween special. Bendy and Beebee go to a scary looking house. The Imps ring the doorbell multiple times, desperate for candy. after getting impatient Beebee suggests they leave. However, Bendy was determined and found a way inside. The two entered, ghosts roamed the house, Carley being the main antagonist. The episode mainly focused on frightening the Imps until they ran out. 3 minutes in, Beebee dragged Bendy out the house in a panic. The haunting episode ending with Carley laughing at the Imps as they ran away before winking at the audience.

In later episodes, Carley is seen following the butcher gang around. Bendy and Beebee interfere with the ghosts attempts of being noticed by the gang. Only the young spider Edgar noticing her. The little spider often interacted with the ghost, getting her noticed by Barley and Charley. The ghost only accompanying the gang to care for Edgar, like a big sister. However she saw this as officially being apart of the gang.

Despite the gang having a hatred towards Bendy and Beebee, Edgar and Carley seemed friendly with the two(frenemies perhaps)

The ghost often seemed embarrassed or shy when around Beebee. The two even had a episode together 'Starry night'. In said episode, Carley attempts to ask Beebee to watch the stars with her. Bendy and Edgar encourage her, however, the ghost is hesitant. She tries to make the night perfect, though the female imp seems to enjoy the event with the ghost despite Carley making many mistakes. The episode ends with the imp giving the ghost a pec on the cheek. Beebee was seen as Carleys love interest, it was never clear if the female demon has the same affection, but it is believed so.

Despite Carley being accepted by Joey, she was later removed after a year of her existence on the show. The ghost didn’t appear for 36 years, like Azael and Beebee, the ghost was a background character. However she was later revamped by arch gate(1972) keeping her for good.

(Arrrr zip it already. Ummmm I want more Carley in canon…..she’s very cool! ^_^ )

Girls night

Through 2023, I've been sketching and conceptualizing my designs for the human cast of BATDR. Giving shape to some ideas, testing new ones, you know the deal.

And December of last year, I wanted to make some slightly more elaborate drawings ("elaborate" in comparison to the previous sketches in this case), with some of these designs. To sort of solidify these ideas better.

The result turned out quite nice, despite a few things. (why are noses so complicated from a head-on perspective) Last month I decided to bring these drawings + 3 small doodles to color. To also solidify how they look in color.

Obviously, this isn't the entire DR cast. There are only 8 designs here, it's a little less than half of the entire cast, I still have to show a lot lol. These above are what I chose to draw in recent times. For the rest of the characters, it's a matter of 1. fleshing out the designs (e.g. Angus Newman, Kitty Thompson) or 2. I still have to think of a design for them (e.g. Muncie Dunn, Telly Wester). When I have a better vision for them, I'll do something similar to what I did here. Make some more elaborate drawings for them, color them digitally and post them here eventually.

I don't know if the text I put is too big or too small, so here are the characters in each image, left to right: -Jane Todd, Kay Lee. -Grace Conway -Bill Danton, Lance Derby -Sally Newt, Hudson Doyle and Carl (one could argue that Carl might not be a real in-universe person, but I still wanted to do a design for him) There are still some details that have yet to be really set in stone, but even so, what we have above is practically the main vision for these designs solidified, so to speak,which I'm happy with.

At first I was only going to color the first three images, but I liked the other 3 mini drawings that I made at the time so I decided to put them here too. Eventually I'll make some better drawings with them, so the next time I show other BATDR designs, I'll post them together. Maybe in the future, when all the designs are finalized, I will make a digital drawing with all the designs, in one place. I tried to do something similar in the past with my BATIM designs, so it would be interesting to do something like this again with the Dark Revival cast.

- Audrey Drew: Is described to be one of Arch Gate Films hardest worker, and is liked by many coworkers

- Wilson Arch: Where his father saw a simple cartoon industry, he saw a goldmine of experiments, and he wanted it all to himself. Wanted to use his own creations against the Ink Demon, and have total control over the Ink dimension

- Allen Gray: A man of business who doesn’t appreciate having failure in his projects. Sometime after Joey’s death he tried to take back the ink machine, most likely knowing what it’s capable of

- Telly Wester: Worked at the bank that Joey Drew would take loans out from, he had to repossess much of the studio belongings after bankruptcy

- Nathan Arch: After Joey’s demise, he was inspired by his work, wanting to keep the “magic” Joey created alive. Is Wilson’s father, but never payed attention to, deeming he wasn’t a “thinker”

- Angus Newman: Worked with Shawn Flynn in the toy factory, but was often slacking off

- Dale Little: Was in charge of tracking shipments in and out of Joey Drew Studios before being in charge of the security codes

- Hudson Doyle: Was forced to be a tour guide to try and earn more money, since Joey was always finding ways to keep money close to him

- Kay Lee: She was instructed to hide objects and files Joey would deem too important to lose, making her question Joey

- Sally Newt: Joey Drew’s personal secretary

- Carl: The amount of stress Joey and the animations put on him drove him to hang himself in his office

- Bill Danton: Started having personality disorders and mental instability after creating and acting out so many cartoon characters (became one of the lost ones in Artist Rest)

- Phil Clark: Was one of the many animators Joey had to hire to replace Henry

- Jane Todd: After the rest of the animation department laughed at her character, she wanted to prove Carly was worth being shown, and thus became Carly

- Lance Derby: Would try and look into what the GENT company was doing in the studio

- Dina Dean: A model that wants to endorse a new shoe polishing product, and Wally finds attractive

- Hank Scott: Just an average worker who wants to get some decent shut eye

- Muncie Dunn: One of the original mechanics at Joey Drew Studios before GENT arrived, doesn’t approve of Joey and GENT’s business partnership

- Grace Conway: Would often talk with Norman Polk when he was hiding somewhere, and would hide in spots no one could find, even stealing from her fellow coworkers

- Eugene Lloyd: Was one of the many JDS workers that hated GENT’s company choices

- GENT: Was once a construction company before working with Joey, starting using poor people as test subjects; broke into the Joey Drew Museum to steal the ink machine and everything it needed to start up

- Steve McGregor: A strong new worker at the GENT corporation that makes everyone drop their jaws at his strength (became Big Steve)

- Archie Carter: Was in money trouble so decided to accept being one of GENT’s test subject candidates

- Chef Buck: After his coworker Little Andre died in front of him, he used his carcass as food for the other workers

- Kitty Thompson: Is a person who is curious about the mysterious ghost train that appears on the lines

- Wilton Moore: An author who loved to create lengthy stories

- Tessa Arch: Possibly either Nathan’s wife or another family member who cares about his health
