I JUST REALIZED THAT THE MAGE IS UMBRIDGE AND THE HUMDRUM IS VOLDY HELP
Explanation (you don’t have to read it):
So in HP, the “big villain” that the MC is meant to hate and that is obviously evil and is the main problem in that world is Voldemort. I’m Carry On, however, this is the Humdrum because from the very start of the book we can see that Simon is fighting the Humdrum and was always destined to- just like Harry was destined to fight Voldemort. And in different ways, the villains are both similar to the hero in some way or another- the Hundrum is literally little Simon and Voldemort is who Harry could have been if he’d been possessed with the need and ambition for power. The main difference between the Humdrum and Voldemort is that Voldemort has a nose.
Now. The Mage is kind of who we trusted at first- or at least didn’t hold anything against. There was nothing to suggest he had ill intent- except for Aunt Fiona trying to kill him (which honestly should have tipped us off because Fiona is great and she can say nothing wrong BUT) we decided he was good. And with Umbridge there wasn’t any evidence to suggest she was bad for the first few seconds of her appearance. But the similarities lie in how they tore our oblivious boyos apart- from the inside. Simon trusted the Mage, treated him like a father figure (which he was. His father I mean) and believed he could do no bad. But then he betrayed him- destroying him from the inside. Harry never trusted Umbridge- nobody did- but she did take his insecurities and use them against him- another form of betrayal and tearing him up from the inside.
Another point is that we were always ready to hate Voldemort and the Humdrum, even if the latter was basically little Simon (I know that’s not entirely correct but). We knew that they were the base of the major problems in the world and we knew that the MCs hated them so we would too. However, we didn’t anticipate the Mage or Umbridge ever being more universally hated that the villain themselves. And they are. If you go over to either fandom you will find that people will more readily kill the Mage (again) that the Humdrum (again kinda) and same for Umbridge and Voldemort. It isn’t that the actual villains did anything to redeem themselves. It’s just because in our eyes the other “smaller” villains are worse because they hurt our character internally and that’s worse than externally.
That’s just my interpretation and I might be wrong but I honestly see so many similarities between these characters so I hope you enjoyed my little rant 😂
