The culmination of my contributions to Tales of Luminaria Party 2023, where I took on the challenge of drawing one of its characters per day.
Completed on its 2nd Anniversary on November 4. The individual pieces can be found over on my art blog, meimei-artpile.
I will never forget Tales of Luminaria, nor will I ever forgive and stop being salty about how Bandai Namco mistreated this masterpiece-in-the-making brimming with so much potential.
Love you forever, Lumi~ 😭

I really can’t emphasize enough how amazing that hanko stamp company is... I’ve noticed they follow a lot of JP Luminaria fans, so that helps explains how they’re so well-informed about the game and how they’re so quick to answer fans’ questions about custom engravings. They frequently thank the fans for their patronage too.
They also tweeted that the person in charge has been excited about the various engravings that the fans have requested. I love that the person in charge is so passionate, and that they seem to be having just as much fun as the fans are!
And they even made a tag for Bastien’s birthday! They’re so excited to celebrate birthdays of the characters they’re featuring on their stamps; they have such great energy!

Okay I feel like my experience of DAI might be a bit.... I guess I could say unique? because my main Inquisitor is a human who is a devout Andrastian, AND pro-mage/pro-elf (it's a long story, he goes through some Character Development), but since last night's post, i've been mentally pacing up and down, thinking about how the "truth vs. lies" narrative throughline applies to Vivienne and her personal quest.
Because... well, hers is the only one (iirc) where you can choose to lie to her. Not tell her to keep up a lie (Blackwall), or lie because she's asking you to lie (Sera), or to conceal what she's discovered (Cassandra), but just straight up lie to her face when she's expecting the truth, and whether she's lying to you or not in general is not even the focal point at that juncture: she just comes to you requesting help, and you can either give it, or deny her.
And regardless of what you do, the facts, the events, don't change, which is what gets me. Nothing tangible happens if you decide to screw her over: whether you give her the heart of a snowy wyvern or just a regular gurgut, her formula will always fail, and Bastien dies. The only difference your lie makes is in her feelings about you, and in her knowing that you're not above stabbing her in the back.
Because if you do choose to accept her request (even though you can just turn it down, and nothing happens besides some approval loss), agree to help her, and then betray her, Vivienne knows. I don't think the game says when she finds out (be it while preparing the potion and she just forges on, hoping that it'll work anyway, or upon looking into it after it fails to see why it failed), but she tells you that much: that she is well aware of your deception, and she doesn't mince her words in voicing her contempt for you.
And man, Vivienne in general is just so fascinating to me.
I mean, she's simultaneously one of the most honest and caring companions, and also one of the ones with the clearest ulterior motives. She, like Bull, basically comes right out the gate and tells you the moment you meet her that she is in this for the power and the opportunity that you present, essentially admitting to you that you are little more than a stepping stone, and early on, her approval can swing wildly: maybe more than for any other companion. And what I keep noticing about that is that these swings are most affected by conversations, where you can lie, far more than your actions, which kind of leads me to believe that she either values your agreeing with her, or in other kinds of setups, you having the good sense to tell her what she wants to hear even if it's not true.
And like, I don't have the brain power at the moment to dissect her deep-seated fears and caution, how her general disapproval tends to boil down to risks and danger, and her whole Deal with why she, as a mage, is so opposed to mage freedom, I'd have to replay the game again to be able to articulate all my thoughts and feelings on that, but it just..... It generally fascinates me how her approval can be maxed out through pretty much conversation alone, while making all the "good" but risky choices that she disapproves of (mage alliance with full freedom, allied wardens, etc.), and before you'd even talk about Bastien's family with her.
And, if she sees an ally in you, man, she's so kind. If she likes you, she's one of the only people to ask you if you're alright after Haven, she offers advice and tries to help the best way she can, and she approves of helping the people of Haven, and of you "yes, and"-ing her, and not wallowing in empty platitudes but letting her have her space to mourn how she wants to, and I just......
Gaaah, I love Vivienne and I keep thinking about her. She makes a terrible fucking Divine, but I just... I'm just looking at her with stars in my eyes, ready to agree with whatever she says and then fuck off to do the exact opposite, knowing that I got a good grade in agreeing with her anyway.
#squirrel plays dragon age#dragon age#dragon age: inquisition#vivienne de fer#just. i didn't mention her in the first post because it's just. a lot#she's a lot and my thoughts are all over and complex and weird#and my inquisitor going from average Andrastian Marcher noble to radical kinda-agnostic-don't-ask freedom-fighter throughout the story#is just very important to me ykwim#he witnessed horrors for the first time in his life and went “wait a minute actually i CAN stop that from happening”#and then he did#truly a guy for all time

Maddy couldn’t help the smile. Of course she would have a union set up, it was only right. “Just wait on that delivery, because it’s coming, one way or another.”
The Valentine’s Day dance had been a whirlwind, for a number of reasons. And even if it didn’t originally come out that way, friendships had been forged and strengthened since that night. Arthur had been the luckiest guy in the room, with Piper getting the arrow while she was looking over at him. The envy of many men who didn’t get pricked that night. But that was all behind them now. Only good things now. She looked back on that night with an odd fondness. And it was like what Bastien had said when he had gone to talk to Pierre that last time. That night was supposed to happen. Willem was meant to enter their lives.
The question she asked wasn’t shallow. She wasn’t expecting a ‘I’m good’ and moving on. She wanted the truth because she was already determined to send Uncle merchandise to the other side, getting something that might improve Arthur’s death over there wasn’t too much to add. But he gave that answer anyway, even with the vagueness, even with the feeling that there was more going on, she chose to believe.
“You know me, Arthur,” She said, a soft smile on her face, as she looked into his dark eyes. “I never stop worrying about the ones I care about.”
She saw that look of realization on his face and chuckled to herself. It was obvious how he felt about Delta, even without the speech he had made at the Krampus Ball all that time ago. He had basically laid it all out for her during their first ever conversation. “Go on, I know you want to,” She said, letting him duck out of the dance early. “I can’t say for certain but they’ve been partial to the roof.”
There was that connection, and Maddy was no longer putting a fog around it. She had always felt this affinity - this closeness - with Wulf of all people. Hell, he was the first person that she had attempted to reach out to, and confirm that she and Bastien were okay to, when they were hiding out in Spain after Oogie attacked their house. She hadn’t done that with the Laveaus. Or with the Trouillefous. Sure, she could amount it up to strategy, if Oogie was really aware that she had the cornerstone, those two families would be ones that they would watch. But still, it had been Wulf. The sweet man that she had met while she was drunk, had gone to while she was lost, and was very proud to have be a part of the wedding party on the biggest day of her life.
Maybe it could have been romantic, once upon a time, once upon a dream. But she couldn’t, nor would she, picture a life without Bastien by her side. She knew who she was, and where she was supposed to be, and she was right there. It was extremely unfortunate that Wulf hadn’t had his own happy ending. He deserved it more than most.
She also had to take a deep breath, to keep herself from crying again, from just squeezing him tight and refusing to let him go, refusing to let death take him again. She was considered a Reaper for Christ’s sake now, wasn’t she? She had killed, even more than just tapping a piece of paper. Been startled by an apparent survivor and pulled a Wall-e, compacting him up into a trash cube. So why couldn’t she stop the reaper that would come around and take everyone back? It just wasn’t fair.
“Fog isn’t just a power of mine, it’s a curse sometimes. But I saw you,” She said, her voice just barely loud enough to be heard over the music. A private conversation for two. “Knew you were going to be important the moment you and Bastien convinced me to go pig-grabbing. I just didn’t know how much.”
He’d get that squeeze. And death would come back for him in the end, but there was hope for next year. Even if it wasn’t at some grand event like this, she’d see him again. She felt sure of that. That was one of the two reasons that she would let him go.
And the second reason was, of course, her husband. No one else could sweep her off her feet the way that he could. The dance they shared when she was recovering, in their little Italy. The dance in the Gazebo during the best date ever. Their wedding dance to this very song. Bastien had wanderin’ feet, walkin’ feet, but he also had dancing feet.
Elsa wouldn’t have known what to do with a hug from Bastien, either way. Might have made that nice costume of his a bit frosty if he had tried. She made her own quick departure, going outside of the castle towards where Bastien had stored the flowers. She would freeze some of the stems in with the snow and ice she would create to make them stand up. A garden in an unsurvivable place.
Bastien was impeccable in noticing things. He did the noticing for the both of them, most times. Maddy was the planning girl, the detail girl, but that didn’t mean she was the most observant of her surroundings. The smile that she would give to her husband was genuine though, knowing that he wasn’t going to disappear like the others. That he was here and warm, and alive, and stable, and she could keep holding him way past this day.
“Did you talk about me?” She asked, amused, though she was already sure that she knew the answer. Sometimes she would catch him talking about her to the gargoyles, so it would make sense that he did the same with his other friends.
She didn’t even catch on. That fogginess. She just thought that he was being a romantic soul, wanting to dance with her for the rest of the night but also being realistic about it. “We can do that.”
To Figaro, this was proof that you didn’t need a romantic date to have fun at something like this. They attended a plethora of the school dances, save for Valentine’s Day because even that was a bit awkward to go solo to and watch all of the kissing and groping and grinding and ugh. And they always had fun with friends, just like they were having the time of their life with this crow kid.
“You get spots?” Figaro nodded, understanding that. “Who cares? Circle them with a marker, make sure everyone can see em. Everyone gets em.” And then they leaned in close to whisper conspiratorially - “Except Delta, I’ve never seen her with a single one, must be fae magic?”
They didn’t mind hanging out with this weirdo. Felt like people like him were often attracted to them like a magnet. Even the weirdo animals. Kebabs was a fucking lunatic, and had pretty much started to nest at their house. So there was a little bit of sadness when he just curly excused himself. “Hasta La Vista, Birdy.”
And then they just bounced their way back to the Merry-Men, pogo jumping into their flock, making themselves be a a part of the ghostly crew.
And yes, back to the Belleroses. While being held by both parents, Frankie was constantly looking around. There was just so much to look at. So many people to watch with wide, curious eyes that resembled her fathers. People were dancing, which took a lot of her attention. She was content to just watch, like a little fly on the wall, just like her dad.
There would be a slight whitening on the on the glass, it growing paler as frost crawled across it, showing Bastien that indeed, Elsa had begun on holding up her end of the deal. It was like a therapy to her, actually, being able to let it out, to create something with it, to release it like a scream that’s been held in for far too long.
Maddy was feeling so good tonight from the talk with Wulf, with Arthur, with her man coming to her side for their song, that she had actually temporarily forgotten about her brother’s ghost. The tension that she held in her shoulders when she had first heard him had dissipated, and she was relaxed, and happy, as if he had never turned up again. And that was a HUGE compliment to her Merry Men and Bastien, considering how much stress that boy had put her through. She forgot even more about him as Bastien started to bring up their beautiful memories together.
She remained silent as he went on, not wanting to interrupt. But her eyes, looking into his baby blues, were showing that she was definitely taking it all. TSG could be beside her, singing into a microphone and she wouldn’t spare him a glance, so heavy was she in this moment. Pumpkin patch engagements, Easter bunny heads, dancing and his imagination.
She still kept those sketches that he threw out. His ideas that he threw away. She’d straighten up the crumpled ball and would put it in her bedside drawer between two heavy books to flatten it back out and try to restore it. Even if they were just scribbles, they had meant something to him. His ideas, his dreams, even if she was just being a Reaper Dorothy and he was the Cowardly Lion, were important.
She opened her mouth to speak but he continued on, so she was just listening, a shocked little smile on her face, never stopping, never interrupting. ‘And you pinned the award for courage on me with your faith in me.’ That was one of the most beautiful things that she had ever heard. He’d been keeping all of this inside of his head? Thank you Gargoyles, for encouraging him to bring it out because she was tearing up again but oh, it was so happy. And she was very glad she had worn waterproof mascara.
That thought train was going choo choo all the way down the rails and until it reached the station on its own, there’d be no delays.
She laughed lightly as he squeezed at her ass. Oh, she may have once been insecure about being flat in the front but he made sure that she knew she wasn’t flat in the behind. It made her blush, all of these words, bringing a red glow to her dusky-colored cheeks.
“You did amazing,” She assured him, standing on the tip toes in her heels and kissed his forehead, leaving just the slightest trace of lipstick there, without wiping it off. It looked good on him. He could pull off all colors. “I love saying yes to you. I love spending every holiday with you. I love how much you clapped for me when I danced. I love how brave you are. I love that you take care of me, not just back then when I was hurting but each and every day, and I’ll always need you, for the rest of my life. I love you during the day, I love you during the night, when you’re happy, when you’re sad, when you’re in pain, when you’re in the zone, every single moment. I love that this is my place, right here,” She moved in closer to him. “And I love that this is yours too.”
She could only address a few of the things that he said, otherwise they would have been here until well after dawn, and she didn’t think that he would be comfortable changing in front of everyone, though he had made leaps and bounds with that. And oh, she was proud of him for that.
Something told him with that look in Maddy's eye she could make it happen. Wulf had every faith in this world about it. "With you in charge, I'm not. I'm sure you'll have between realm postmen and have their unions set up before it's over and done with too."
Arthur and Maddy did not get a real chance to dance at the Valentine's dance and it was only now he was realizing it as they were arm in arm. He remembered not being confident about going when he had a wheelchair. Then Piper sat in his lap for a dance. Piper's magic always had a way of boosting a guy's confidence even if it was just for a little while. She never really needed to be under any enchantment to do it, but Arthur never knew that. What he thought about now was finally getting his chance to dance with his date, even if his date was married. It felt like things always did iron out and come full circle. No enchantment needed here either. He wasn't in his wheelchair. He was up on his prosthetic leg even in death, but he knew that Maddy came up to him willingly today. After he'd learned about the enchantment at the dance he wasn't so sure about Piper anymore. It shook the confidence he'd gained that night back in life. In death he knew one thing was certain. Maddy was a true one. He could tell by her question.
Was he happy? It paused his steps. He smiled like only a spirit who knew there were rules behind his eyes that knew he had to be vague to the living about all the details of over there. It was the sort of thing that used to drive River bonkers when colluding with the other side. He's well on his way to knowing all the answers now. Maddy didn't really ask for elaboration even though most normal people knew to do so when speaking off the end of a question. It was rude to answer without elaboration in most regular conversations. So, it would give that feel of that's all I can say even as he completely answered what she asked.
"Yeah. I'm good, Maddy. Really. I'm in a good place. Don't you worry about me."
Then his steps would start to move again as he suddenly realized his feet stopped to answer. He was however starting to worry about time. Ever loyal Arthur was in waiting for Delta and Frank to show face and after this dance he was going to start snooping the castle if they didn't.
Lil John had no idea what he was healing inside, but he sure was having the best night ever. Wulf however was gifted his own healing. Maddy gave a new kind of magic tonight. She let down her shield instead of keeping those walls so high even she couldn't or wouldn't look through. In that he heard what he needed to hear. That he wasn't crazy. That it wasn't all in his mind. It didn't have to be about ending in romance. It was connection. Ah boy that look in her eyes. It took him back to the cabin on a day she seemed so lost. She wasn't lost now. She seemed to know exactly who she was, and who she once was. He was never convinced they were really much different people, but just a part of what the difference in growing up is versus grown up, but he never minded the name change. He never went by his birth name either. Hell, even in death he was going by Wulf and no one knew any different. He liked it that way. If anyone understood, it was Wulf.
The look on her face could have made him burst. He had no idea he could still feel the heat in his throat that threatened tears. Her words were a relief that brought a little sanity to his emotions when it came to her. She noticed. He nearly felt like Eeyore thinking it. But, he wasn't a guy who usually went around unnoticed. However, most guys in her class's age group knew Maddy as the girl who didn't notice anything. As he did not go to school with her he wouldn't have known her reputation. So it was more of an unnerving experience not to feel seen. He'd just smoke one up and try not to think about it.
She was proving now it wasn't all in his head. She noticed or she wouldn't say such a thing now. Somehow he didn't feel like just another Merry Man in the group she was being nice to now. Polite for polite sake or just the guy who happened to have the weed. Such people could be so annoying. She had no idea how much he needed that. He named a pet after her. Big hint there that maybe she was special to him in some kind of way.
"I always saw you, Maddy." He blew out a big breath right then to admit,
"Just wasn't sure you saw me... or heard me more like. Thank you for not looking through me either. Seeing I saw." Okay his words were about to get tripped up. "I enjoyed seeing you." Yup. Best to hug it out instead.
Then she'd get that last hug because there was no way it wasn't happening before he let go for Bastien to cut in. He'd give her the kindest smile as he stepped off too. Wulf didn't have a lot of problems in his life. He wasn't that guy. But there were a few mysteries that plagued him and she settled his heart. He'd be forever remembering this Halloween and the girl he tried so hard to get to follow her own heart. No one else's. Maybe he made a difference there after all. Maybe she really did. He liked that thought so much.
Lil John was dancing with his piggie by the time he stepped away from Maddy and had to threaten to pulverize him for stealing his real partner. All the merry merriment of Merry Men ensued again. Silliness as usual as Wulf and John play bickered over who's turn it was with the hog dancer.
The Big Bad Wolf would holler from across the room when he heard the commotion. "I'll dance with her." John and Wulf watched as Zeke popped a big flop of bacon dipped in chocolate into his mouth and their eyes widened.
"No-no. No. No. We're good. She's good." Both men who were bickering over Agnes the pig started saying, "You dance. No you. Please dance. Just dance with her." They both wanted anyone to dance with the hog ballerina but that huffing and puffing blow her little house downer. They didn't trust Zeke to dance with her at all, not even one.
Zeke was left smirking at their reaction. "Suit yourselves."
Bastien wasn't a hugger like Maddy. So before he came over for that dance when Elsa told him she was able and willing to do the beach he said, "Thanks." He was a man of simple words once he got to the point, but he was a man that meant them. Then he'd attempt to explain where the shed was before the song interrupted his easily distracted mind.
When he came up to Maddy he noticed the expressions on Wulf and Maddy's were a little different. He couldn't always make out what every social cue meant, but he was fly on the wall enough to notice differences and was always studying even if he filed it away for later contemplating. This one however never took a brain scientist to discover. "Wulf always did like you best."
He laughed. Memories going through his mind. "He knew you were a good one. I probably talked too much when I got stoned at his place."
Then not being the slickest person for a slick guy Bastien said, "I could dance with you for a whole hour. Maybe two." Elsa was not out of his head.
Diablo was basically a kid in any form anyway with that animal like mind no matter age. Best to look the part. He was having the most fun with Figaro too. They were so obliging, so upbeat. A bird needed such flavor tonight. He was especially excited when they invited them to learn more about this Pun-Pun later. That meant seeing more Figaro later. Now they had a reason to show up. It felt like a very big score for this little guy.
As for his height, "Yeah, but I always get acne when I do and I don't like that. Not at all." He seemed annoyed at the concept. He wasn't sure why it had to be a thing, but it just was. Even as a familiar his avatar was too spot on correct with the teenage likeness. Delta blamed Maleficent for that one. All he knew now was he was going to get dipped so he was a happy one. This turned out really fun for him.
He'd let out a little caw at the end of his dip feeling like he was going to fall but when Figaro actually held them up quite well it felt like one of those trust exercises he'd seen on tv. It was strange to let himself fall without his wings. He'd end up like any kid though wanting to do something more than once, several times over once he realized it was fun. It was the sort of thing that usualy wore an adult out and eventually had to put down a foot on less injure themselves with their less enegy bars than a child. Figaro would never have to put their foot down though because eventually the song would end and Diablo would let that game go.
He even stuck around after knowing Delta wanted to be alone. He only left Figaro's side when he felt a calling from within. Then without warning or much to do he'd say, "Good bye." Then he'd go with the swirl of cape into a bird again and soar off into castle high ceilings. Anyone whoever spent any time around Diablo would find he did this often. It was his way. Never truly off duty. His life, heart, passion, and soul was bound.
Back to the Belleroses, the couple in surprise waiting, not that Maddy realized that. Bastien couldn't help but keep glancing at the southside stained glass. He was trying to notice if it looked foggy like it was cold outside. Maybe he'd notice frost? He couldn't help it. He was excited. Maybe he'd look like he was still paranoid about Frollo? Who knew? But, he still had Frollo in the back of his mind. He hadn't forgotten about the castle breach with all those dead people walking around when Delta assured him the castle couldn't be haunted due to it's protections. It had worked since they lived there. At least that they'd noticed. Arthur wasn't the only one who wanted to talk to Delta.
That said as they danced to their song by Lance Bastien was more lost in the memories it brought. "I love the pumpkin patch. I love when you said yes. I love giving pumpkins away from our trunk in the neighborhood. I love dressing up with you. I love Christmas in Paris. I love traveling. I love Chef Maddy's famous Italian restaurant. I love satin on your skin and trying to tell the difference with my eyes closed. I love sidewalks when we push the stroller down them together. Easter bunny heads, I love those too."
Bastien was on a sharing roll. Most jabbery with his wife and also when he was under the influence and his inhibitions less inhibited. There were gargoyles dancing nearby ever so proud of him too. Laverne was rooting him on. "Inside thoughts outside. You're doing it." It made him grin all the more.
"I love dancing with you and Frankie too. I love watching you dance. You were so hot when you danced earlier. I tried to clap loud. Everybody else was loud too. I love Disney World and teacups. I love pirate cafes and funny menus when I get to read them with you even when it's in the day. And Ruby Slippers. Even the shoe. I love eating there with you. I like the big sign. I love imagining you in shiny ones like Dorothy. Only when I see it your Dorothy dress has a reaper hood and I love it because you're sexy in it. You called me your cowardly lion."
Victor the gargoyle would yell out, "Maybe not so many inside thoughts."
Hugo would yell, "No! Keep going. You got this babay!"
"But I knew I wasn't cowardly because the lion earned his courage."
Laverned fluttered her eyes with an, "Awww. He's actually going to say it."
"And you pinned the award for courage on me with your faith in me. So once I had it. I loved sharing it with you. I loved helping you through everything. Yeah, yeah I love thinking of that how we shared the courage. But remember what the witch said at the end about the ruby slippers? How she had the power all along? I love that my courage came from you and when I shared it I was sharing what was already yours. You had the power all along too. I just really love you needed me anyway. That's my favorite part." He explained as if she was totally following he was explaining how his mind saw them in as vivid detail as he could. "I love that part and there's no place like home. I love we have one. A forever home." He might have sounded like a person talking about a stray pup getting adopted but from the streets to where he was now, the words seemed right to him.
He seemed to be on a thought train though and unless Maddy interrupted him he was going to keep going.
"Oh, you know what else I love? Where's Waldo? I love that. I love you tolerate my Chuck Norris jokes and walking shoes. I love your naner bread and I'm not sure why I find my big shirts on pillows but since you do it, I love that too." The big shirts comment made his mind go to the daylight. "I love you stay with me when I change. I love you don't question my pain or how tired I am. You just believe it. I love you let me sleep." His mind was plagued with people waking him up to move along in the city. Get out of the way. He always felt like such a bother for even existing. Then his face got a little emotional as his thoughts got away with him. He had to lean in because he was speaking for Maddy's ears only, "I love you go out with me in the day." Then his voice even lower, "I love remembering being with you in the day in bed. Sometimes I like to remember that in the shower even though I can't always get myself to do it for real. I still love you love me like that... even if... I always can't. I know you do." Then he shook his head as he backed his face from her ear like, "Yeah, I love that."
Then with the subject on more intimate subjects his mind got naughtier and he put his free hand down to her rear. "And I love this." He gave his wife's backside a squeeze. "Don't even make me count the ways I'm thinking about that because if you think the list I started is long already it may never end."
"I'm doing good, right? Inside thoughts out? I promised I'd do better."

Look Mode References for Bastien’s 5 Star “GE Ceremonial (Black Wolf)” outfit
You can usually find turnarounds of a character’s outfits on Twitter or Youtube, so I tried to focus on zooming in on details of a character’s outfits rather than capturing the whole outfit in one shot.
More good shots for the Noble Carrot Blade’s hilt and “sheath.” In hindsight, I should’ve had Bastien model all the Katana type weapons because he probably displays blade, hilt, guard, and sheaths the best out of all Katana wielders...

Panier (0)Musée Jules Bastien-Lepage et de la Fortification, Montmédy
Montmédy (German: Mittelberg) is a commune in the Meuse department in Grand Est in north-eastern France.
Jules Bastien-Lepage (1 November 1848 – 10 December 1884) was a French painter closely associated with the beginning of naturalism, an artistic style that emerged from the later phase of the Realist movement.
His most famous work is his landscape-style portrait of Joan of Arc which currently resides at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.
Bastien-Lepage was born in the village of Damvillers, Meuse, and spent his childhood there. Bastien's father grew grapes in a vineyard to support the family. His grandfather also lived in the village; his garden had fruit trees of apple, pear, and peach up against the high walls. Bastien took an early liking to drawing, and his parents fostered his creativity by buying prints of paintings for him to copy.
Jules Bastien-Lepage's first teacher was his father, himself an artist. His first formal training was at Verdun. Prompted by a love of art, he went to Paris in 1867, where he was admitted to the École des Beaux-arts, working under Cabanel. He was awarded first place for drawing, but spent most of his time working alone, only occasionally appearing in class. Nevertheless, he completed three years at the école. In a letter to his parents, he complained that the life model was a man in the pose of a mediaeval lutanist. During the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, Bastien fought and was wounded. After the war, he returned home to paint the villagers and recover from his wound. In 1873 he painted his grandfather in the garden, a work that would bring the artist his first success at the Paris Salon.
After exhibiting works in the Salons of 1870 and 1872, which attracted no attention, in 1874 his Portrait of my Grandfather garnered critical acclaim and received a third-class medal. He also showed Song of Spring, an academically oriented study of rural life, representing a peasant girl sitting on a knoll above a village, surrounded by wood nymphs.
His initial success was confirmed in 1875 by the First Communion, a picture of a little girl minutely worked up in manner that was compared to Hans Holbein, and a Portrait of M. Hayern. In 1875, he took second place in the competition for the Prix de Rome with his Angels appearing to the Shepherds, exhibited again at the Exposition Universelle in 1878. His next attempt to win the Prix de Rome in 1876 with Priam at the Feet of Achilles was again unsuccessful (it is in the Lille gallery), and the painter determined to return to country life. To the Salon of 1877 he sent a full-length Portrait of Lady L. and My Parents; and in 1878 a Portrait of M. Theuriet and Haymaking (Les Foins). The last picture, now in the Musée d'Orsay, was widely praised by critics and the public alike. It secured his status as one of the first painters in the Naturalist school.
After the success of Haymaking, Bastien-Lepage was recognized in France as the leader of the emerging Naturalist school. By 1883, a critic could proclaim that "The whole world paints so much today like M. Bastien-Lepage that M. Bastien-Lepage seems to paint like the whole world." This fame brought him prominent commissions.
His Portrait of Mlle Sarah Bernhardt (1879), painted in a light key, won him the cross of the Legion of Honour. In 1879 he was commissioned to paint the Prince of Wales. In 1880 he exhibited a small portrait of M. Andrieux and Joan of Arc listening to the Voices (now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art); and in the same year, at the Royal Academy, the little portrait of the Prince of Wales. In 1881 he painted The Beggar and the Portrait of Albert Wolf; in 1882 Le Père Jacques; in 1885 Love in a Village, in which we find some trace of Gustave Courbet's influence. His last dated work is The Forge (1884).
Between 1880 and 1883 he traveled in Italy. The artist, long ailing, had tried in vain to re-establish his health in Algiers. He died in Paris in 1884, when planning a new series of rural subjects.

Count Edmont shook his head. “I had hoped bringing you into our household would inspire Emmannlien to make something of himself. I wonder, now, if anything would.”
“It is hard to live up to our parents’ expectations,” Bastien said. He stared out across the plaza of the Vigil, at the distant mountains of Abalathia’s Spine. He remembered his father’s face, when he told them he was leaving. “We try and try, and seem to fail more often than we succeed. Sometimes we must forge our own path, not the one our parents laid out for us.”
“If only he knew what path he wanted to forge.” Count Edmont shook his head. “I appreciate the insight. Mayhap this time he has gained some sense.”
They entered the Manor. The halls were quiet, and the lights darkened. Count Edmont nodded at Bastien before parting ways, heading for his chambers. Bastien glanced into the sitting room to find it empty, as if the entire first floor of the house was vacant.
He retired to his room for the night, and remained undisturbed.

Everything I could find on Bastien Forge
The Black Wolf, one of the Alphas who support the empire alongside August. He boasts overwhelming strength, even for a soldier of the imperial army; his mere appearance on the battlefield is enough to make federation soldiers shudder in fear. A man lacking in emotions, he usually thinks only of the mission, but sometimes baffles others with his peculiar comments. He thinks of himself as little more than a weapon, and when not on duty, he is training for his next mission.
