i think the worst form of rejection is when you give someone who's supposed to care about you an easy opportunity to show that they care about you, and they still don't take it.

i'll never fault someone for continuing to love even though their love isn't reciprocated, but if you're climbing mountains for someone who won't even take a single step for you, at some point it's good to let go. that rejection will eat away at your self-worth and convince you that you're cursed to chase after the slightest gestures of love for the rest of your life.

Princess Porkchop fiddled around in a bush, then looked up at Maria. A huge, limp rat was in her mouth!

Maria let out a scream and slammed the door.

Princess Porkchop sat at the door, confused.

Mei was standing in front of her bathroom sink, staring at the faucet handles. Nothing was out of the ordinary about them, they looked a bit dirty but nothing was wrong from anyone else's glance. But Mei knew. There was definitely something wrong. It was the weekend, and she woke up in an empty house earlier that morning, accompanied with a text message from her parents saying that they were out for a business trip. She hadn't encountered Lily (her pet cat) yet either despite the house's size. After going to the bathroom, she washed her hands in the sink she was standing at. But the right handle turned on hot water, while the left turned on cold. Mei knew. When she was smaller, her dad jammed the left handle so hard that it broke. Her family could only wash their hands with hot water in the kitchen sink after that. Eventually her dad fixed the handle and she could use hot water again. But that day the faucet didn't work the way it always had. And Mei knew. This couldn't have been her house.

It had been an uneventful past few days, but that had come to an abrupt end today. It started off pretty normal, with Roxanne making breakfast for herself and her kitten, doing some chores, then setting off for work. Work though, in itself, was always an adventure somehow.

Today's adventure was that they'd managed to run out of burger patties. This came with the consequence of pissing people off that their well established cheap burger chain couldn't keep the very thing they were known for in stock.

Stars forbid people don't get their lab made hamburgers, Roxanne smiled despite the bitter thought as she handed over another refund to another pissed off customer. He snatched the money from her hand, grumbling something about never coming back as he turned away.

"Have a nice day!" She forced a cheery tone through a strained grin. "And please keep that promise to not come back!"

...Today might just be the day she loses her job for getting smart with a customer. Or today may be the day she quits out of spite. Whichever happened first.
