On This Day in History June 2, 1935: Famed slugger Babe Ruth announces his retirement from Professional Baseball.
Ruth was traded to the Boston Braves with promises of future managerial opportunities and profit sharing from gate receipts. In reality the promises were hollow which were made worse by his conflicts with management and by his poor performance both on the field and at bat. Ruth would finish his last season with a .181 batting average with 6 homers and 12 RBI in 72 at-bats.

I normally do this on my @historysisco and @baseballsisco IG pages but I found this book to good not to recommend. Chasing Space: An Astronaut's Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances by Leland Melvin shows us why we should never quit on our dreams and aspirations. Here is how the book is described: "In this uplifting memoir, former NASA astronaut and professional athlete in the NFL, Leland Melvin offers an examination of the intersecting role of community, determination, and grace that align to shape our opportunities and outcomes. Chasing Space is not the story of one man, but the story of many men, women, scientists, and mentors who helped him defy the odds and live out an uncommon destiny. While training with NASA, Melvin suffered a severe injury that left him deaf. Leland was relegated to earthbound assignments, but chose to remain and support his astronaut family. His loyalty paid off. Recovering partial hearing, he earned his eligibility for space travel. He served as mission specialist for two flights aboard the shuttle Atlantis, working on the International Space Station. As a chemist, athlete, engineer and space traveler, Leland’s life story is a study in the science of achievement. His personal insights illuminate how grit and grace, are the keys to overcoming adversity and rising to success." #LelandMelvin #ChasingSpace #NASA #Astronaut #BooksatmyJob #NeverGiveUp #KeepMovingForward #WorkForYourDreams #Hardwork #HardWorkPaysOff #RollingUpYourSleeves #GettingYourHandsDirty #LeadByExample #Entrepreneurship #Motivation #MotivationalWords #Success #Failure #Resilience #SiscoVanilla #SiscoVanillaIsStepping (at Barnes & Noble)

Well New York Mets fans, you can be glad that your 1962 Metropolitans no longer have the most season losses. That distinction is now held by the 2024 Chicago White Sox who now have lost 121 games with two games to go. Can they lose two more games? We'll have to wait and see.

The epic reunion of father and son Luis Tiant Sr. And Jr. at Federal Park during Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. Tiant Sr. was allowed to travel to the U.S. from Cuba to see his son pitch in the World Series. Tiant Sr. was a professional pitcher both in Cuba and the Negro Leagues.

A legend of Latino Baseball has passed away. Cuban pitcher "El Tiante" Luis Clemente Tiant Vega (November 23, 1940 – October 8, 2024) passed away at the age of 83.
Tiant, with his distinctive fu-manchu stash, barrel chest and unique corkscrew windup was a second generation star who played for the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and California Angels.
El Tiante's best seasons came while with the Boston Red Sox in the mid to late 1970s. Tiant had three 20+ win seasons and four seasons of over 260 innings pitched including a career high 311 IP in 1974.
Tiant was involved in an emotional moment during the classic 1975 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. The political climate at the time with Cuba forbade easy travel between the two countries. Fidel Castro relaxed the restriction to allow Tiant's parents to travel to Boston to watch him pitch in the World Series. Tiant's father Luis Tiant Sr. pitched in his native Cuba and in the Negro Leagues primarily for the New York Cubans from 1935 - 1947. Tiant Sr. would throw the ceremonial first pitch before Game 6.
En paz descanse Tiante.

Happy Thursday everyone. Here is my MLB Immaculate Grid number 542 for Wednesday September 25.
I went back to the "Black Sox scandal" days for the Chicago White Sox/100+ RBI season. Shoeless Joe Jackson is immortalized in Baseball History for his part of the scandal. Whether or not he participated in throwing the World Series is up to debate, but there is no denying his ability on the field.
Jackson had a career WAR of 62.2 and while not a power threat, he dominated the basepaths by being a doubles and triples machine. Jackson has 4 seasons of 40 or more doubles and 9 double digit triple seasons. His best in terms of triples came in 1912 with a league best 26 3-baggers. His prowess in doubles and triples also meant his OPS was phenomenal. He had four straight seasons of an over 1.0 OPS and had a career .940 OPS. Its a shame that he has yet to be reinstated for enshrinement to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Its a short and sweet post today. The UN General Assembly traffic, protests and residual delays have worn me out. On to grid number 543.
