Dizzy Time
Another wonderful Wednesday evening. We will be returning our books to the library in Ozark tonight at their convenient library drop box, after our Wednesday evening Bible teaching. And after all the years that have passed (well over fifty) I began recalling library thoughts of some of my youngest years.
I spent hours at the Hayden Heights Public Library on the East Side of St. Paul while in…

Happy MLB Playoff Tuesday!!! Here is my MLB Immaculate Grid number 547 for Monday September 30.
At first I wanted to do a whole grid with old school players. But when I realized that the top line was the Arizona Diamondbacks, I knew that idea was screwed. But I still kept that feel for the lower two lines.
Dizzy Dean had one of the most outstanding seasons for the 1934 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Dean led the "Gashouse Gang" with a 30-7 record with a 2.66 ERA, 311.2 IP, a league leading 195 strikeouts, 75 walks and a WHIP of 1.165. Dean started 33 games and appeared in 50 games during the 1934 season which led to Dean having both 7 shutouts AND 7 saves. Not surprisingly, Dean was the 1934 NL MVP. And to top it off, Dean was one of Baseball's biggest characters.
I would have never thought of Lou Gehrig getting only 1.0% of the vote in any grid. Consider that Gehrig hit BEHIND Babe Ruth for most of his early career, he had 13-straight seasons of 100+ runs scored from 1925-1938.
Jimmie Foxx is another HOFer that I'm surprised got a low score in the A's/100+ run scored. Foxx retired with a career 1.038 OPS so he was in the position to drive in some major runs.
Roger Maris is known for his time in New York and St. Louis. I guess most people don't remember that Maris played for the A's...The Kansas City A's. I actually didn't realize that Maris came up with Cleveland before being traded to Kansas City.
With the whole Oakland A's playing their last game in Oakland and perhaps some people don't know, the A's started in Philadelphia, playing there from 1901-1954. The team would move to Kansas City and play there from 1955-1967 before being moved to Oakland by owner Charley Finley. Now the A's are probably moving to Las Vegas after playing the next couple of seasons in Sacramento.
Well that's all for now folks. I'm going to enjoy the playoff action today. On to MLB Immaculate Grid number 548.

1934 Wold Series and “The Gas House Gang
"When the Great Depression struck, many baseball owners feared the worst. They would have trouble drawing fans. The fans they did draw would have a hard time paying for the extra souvenirs or food concessions. Little did they know, people would still come to the ballpark if only to forget about their own troubles for a while. Attendance would be down in the 1930s but none of the sixteen franchises ever folded or moved as a result of the Great Depression and some of the games’ lasting stars said goodbye while others said hello. New ways of playing emerged, lasting vestiges of the game emerged, and a new era of baseball had begun. Coming out of the 1920s, baseball began to boom. Newspapers and radio combined to turn the game into a way to forget about your problems for a couple of days. New stadiums had been built and offense was booming. ...

Nice Guys Finish Last - Leo Durocher & Ed Linn
Nice Guys Finish Last Leo Durocher & Ed Linn Genre: Sports & Outdoors Price: $17.99 Publish Date: September 15, 2009 Publisher: University of Chicago Press Seller: Chicago Distribution Center “I believe in rules. Sure I do. If there weren’t any rules, how could you break them?” The history of baseball is rife with colorful characters. But for sheer cantankerousness, fighting moxie, and will to win, very few have come close to Leo “the Lip” Durocher. Following a five-decade career as a player and manager for baseball’s most storied franchises, Durocher teamed up with veteran sportswriter Ed Linn to tell the story of his life in the game. The resulting book, Nice Guys Finish Last , is baseball at its best, brimming with personality and full of all the fights and feuds, triumphs and tricks that made Durocher such a success—and an outsized celebrity. Durocher began his career inauspiciously, riding the bench for the powerhouse 1928 Yankees and hitting so poorly that Babe Ruth nicknamed him “the All-American Out.” But soon Durocher hit his stride: traded to St. Louis, he found his headlong play and never-say-die attitude a perfect fit with the rambunctious “Gashouse Gang” Cardinals. In 1939, he was named player-manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers—and almost instantly transformed the underachieving Bums into perennial contenders. He went on to manage the New York Giants, sharing the glory of one of the most famous moments in baseball history, Bobby Thomson’s “shot heard ’round the world,” which won the Giants the 1951 pennant. Durocher would later learn how it felt to be on the other side of such an unforgettable moment, as his 1969 Cubs, after holding first place for 105 days, blew a seemingly insurmountable 8-1/2-game lead to the Miracle Mets. All the while, Durocher made as much noise off the field as on it. His perpetual feuds with players, owners, and league officials—not to mention his public associations with gamblers, riffraff, and Hollywood stars like George Raft and Larraine Day—kept his name in the headlines and spread his fame far beyond the confines of the diamond. A no-holds-barred account of a singular figure, Nice Guys Finish Last brings the personalities and play-by-play of baseball’s greatest era to vivid life, earning a place on every baseball fan’s bookshelf. http://bit.ly/2EJZuBQ
