This photo is not from an actual farm that held a rave, but rather is an image really close to my memory. It was definitely a Drop Bass event, and may have been Genesis. 

Raves in ‘93

I sparkled with beautiful memories last week listening to an interview with Caroline Prothero, causing me to reflect on early 90’s rave culture. I just became aware of what a huge heart-opening effect those experiences had on my life! I see now that it was my entree into a deeper element of life, the first glimpse that something spiritual exists in the electricity in the air around us. Sure, in my own path those early experiences definitely didn’t propel me right onto inner development, spiritual work, or for that matter even mental health. Still, when I look at that movement as a whole I see how to some degree those were the seeds behind the really blissful elements of modern day spiritual and musical festivals, particularly Cali ones like Coachella and Lightning in a bottle. Similarly, I can also see that pop of awakening in my young self to the spirituality of tribal dance, tribal love, and genuine acceptance - basically the purity in coming together to celebrate being alive and feel the transcendent effects of music.

I didn’t attend many of these parties, maybe just two in Wisconsin, and one very different feeling warehouse party in Chicago. After that I moved to Seattle in ’94 and experienced just a couple parties that seemed to be morphing into a different, more organized and structured type of event. It was the couple events in Wisconsin that really impacted me. Maybe a few hundred kids, really without social stratification, except maybe the three or so dj’s visiting for the event. There was no big ticket price preventing anyone from attending, it rather just took having enough curiosity and courage to explore what happens when you and a couple friends pick up a pyschedelic flyer or get tipped off from a friend to call a phone number which directs you to a house - aka map point - somewhere in the night, and there meet a kid in big pants and Manic Panic’d hair, who gives you a photocopy of a hand drawn map which directs you out to some farm land in the middle of nowhere in the plains and hills of Wisconsin.

There wasn’t anything for sale at these events, at least the farmland Wisconsin party I can remember well. You couldn’t even get a bottle of water if you’d failed to bring your own, the only alcohol present was a random six pack here or there that attendees might have brought for themselves. No one had planned ahead to silkscreen Tshirts. Did Red Bull even exist back then? In any case, it was absent. Now, I hear there are things like VIP sections and champagne service at electronic parties, and I attended a Vegas show of a famous DJ in 2015 filled with people in glittering BCBG and heels. The parties to which I refer are 180 on the spectrum from the feeling of exclusion I felt at that Vegas show, as I arrived in what I thought was a carefully purchased and chosen ensemble that actually made me feel like I was coiffed more suitably for a role as a busser or barrunner. We were pretty blind to status in a way that regrettably teenagers may never know again in this age of early self-branding and image-consciousness.

I myself was awkward. I was not hip or stylish or just naturally someone who would be included in anything exclusive and cool. It took me quite a while before I even braved my parents’ frustration to wash in some hot pink Punky Color into unbleached hair. I didn’t have any teenage confidence to pull off the pigtails, midriff shirts, and jnco jeans with the same aplomb that many of those darling 90’s raverettes did, although it didn’t stop me from trying. But something in me was drawn like a moth to a flame to be there, in need of that community, in need of those hugs, in need of the love and the unity. I needed to be permitted to look up to the heavens and ask for something higher, like the love and other realities that were reflected in all the wrappings of these events.

In the podcast that sparked these memories, Shaman Durek pointed out that tribal dance is an incredibly old tradition that is used to create an energy which can thereby be directed to the needs of the community. How incredibly true this is. That young, naive, sweating, hopeful group energy charged some kind of light to illuminate a road I did not previously know existed. How lucky I was to take my first steps along it in childhood years. I really remember being changed as darkness melted and the sun arose and we found ourselves surrounded in nature by animals and friends.
