New Miguel comic: Conchata
This is talking about the abuse Miguel/Gabriel went through and my unhappiness with the writing of conchata
As we all know the first issue of the 2024 spiderman 2099 comics has come out, there are 5 in total but only the 1st is out, the first one is about downtown. No I am not calling “barrio” having a zombie infestation and conchata gets bitten, conchata accidentally shows how bad the writers are at writing Latino characters by having Miguel call her “mom” and “Connie” Connie which Tyler calls her as a way to do a micro aggression. He calls Miguel “Mike”, and conchata “Connie” to erase their Hispanic roots, so why is Miguel calling her that, and to take into consideration, he’d more likely call her “ma” he is a proud Mexican man, he wears his heritage with pride, (literally as his suit is a dead of the dead suit), why is the first thing we see erasure, through conchata.
The next thing is her mentioning “barrio” the writing terrible “barrio man” stupid, they wanted to try and connect Miguel to his roots by using a random Spanish word, when they could have connected him to his roots by getting him to call conchata “conchata” or “ma” very easy.
Next up is the fact conchata basically blames Miguel for Gabriel’s death, she does regret what she says afterwards as it was the “infestation” making her speak but it was obviously her inner thoughts. Leading to a bigger issue. by the end of the comic Miguel forgives her for it and tells her it was just the infestation, but can we really believe that? Obviously conchata felt there was truth behind her words and she was upset Miguel had to hear them as she wanted to keep them inside. To me it was like the inner thoughts coming out of a drunk person as they have no self control, losing the control to keep the truths hidden as you lose the off button
Conchata is abusive, I’m not going to act like she’d a good mother to either Gabriel or Miguel, Gabriel faced abuse, mostly from George, but we aren’t going to pretend that conchata wouldn’t have been disgusting towards him as well in any way, and then of course Miguel, she physically abuses him, neglects him, and hates him, and the marvel industry has an obsession with redeeming her
As someone that was abused I can say abusers can be redeems in some situations, I had an abusive family member that is now my most loved and cared for family member, because they redeemed…themself…and put in the work..they got therapy…they admitted to their wrongs, they changed their ways, and removed people from their life that made them bad, does conchata do this? No lmao
We are expected to watch conchata get redeems when Miguel is putting in all the effort, abuse victims are not the ones that should put in effort, why? Because it justifies the abusers actions, doesn’t get them to learn, and lets them continue that behaviour on. Realistically Miguel putting in the effort, is showing a way abuse victims get stuck in cycles of abuse, and we are meant to believe everything is okay and that it is a good thing, it is not, it is a harmful message, and one many young fans who are just getting into spiderman will see, and can possibly start to believe this is okay, as fiction can and will alter the brain specially of younger people.
You could argue “well she is putting in effort now!” From the way the comic ends but
Miguel waits hours to see conchata, he tries to save her, he is patient with her, by the end he decided to do her jobs so she can figure herself out, a way of doing the work for her literally; and he’s too forgiving, he is still an abuse victim, and in a way this is signs that he will be abused again. And I have to mention the “too forgiving” bit, who is too forgiving? GABRIEL. And he does that as a BAD coping mechanism, he is a people pleaser due to trauma, he copes in the wrong way of trying to please people to the point of being overly forgiving because he is a victim of abuse, marvel is indirectly writing Miguel to start having Gabriel’s toxic coping mechanisms.
Yes it says she will learn to live with herself. But it says nothing about learning to become a better mother, learning to change, learning to become better.
Tho as much as I hate her and the writing, I love the art so much, this is absolutely stunning

Ángel Manuel Soto on Cultural Specificity in Blue Beetle
Rafael Motamayor : There is a cultural specificity to the film that we haven't really seen before in superhero movies, and the Reyes family members aren't just Pan-Latino, but specifically Mexican. Why was this important for the film?
Ángel Manuel Soto: I think we've been psychologically and pathologically inculcated a fallacy by the hegemony that our specificity is not universal, that the white and gringo are universal. The truth of the matter is that we're all universal if we embrace our true selves. We Latinos watch Korean movies, Japanese movies, European movies, and we connect with their specificity because Latinos were never given that change because we were told you couldn't, and I never agreed with that feeling, that thought. It is an institutionalized philosophy, and Hollywood has perpetrated it.
So for me, I wanted to start from the premise that the universality of our cultures exists in our specificity. And if we are honest and free to be authentically us, and we don't have to be like someone else, it can still reach a general audience even if they don't look like us. To me, it was important for writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer as a Mexican, for me as a Puerto Rican, and to the actors as Mexicans, to be themselves, to allow this to be a movie where we take ourselves seriously, but also enjoy ourselves and express ourselves freely. To me, it was important to not have to reinvent the wheel at the first try, but to instead use nostalgia to make a throwback to the movies we liked as kids and insert ourselves in those scenes as the heroes of the movie, embracing authenticity. After, we can reinvent the wheel.
The only thing that could have prevented this was the studio, and from the beginning, I told them if they were going to tell me how big the explosions were going to be, they could not tell me how Latino my movie was going to be.
RM: One thing I love was the references to cultural touchstones like "El Chapulín Colorado" and "María la del Barrio." Could you talk about those references and introducing these things to a wider audience?
AS: Just as we consume other countries' popular cultures, we can't leave other people ignorant to the things that connect us as Latinos, because though our countries have their own idiosyncrasies, truths, and specific cultural identities, there are also more things that unite us within a Latin American collective. For me, it was very important not only to pay homage and honor that first Latin American hero we all collectively grew up with, but highlight that a Mexican in Querétaro like Gareth, and a Puerto Rican like me, being so far away, still can say that our first exposure to a superhero was El Chapulín, because he was in every Latin American's home.
So we thought, why not embrace the characters or elements that are specific, which also have a Pan-Latino appeal? And through that, we can celebrate the intersectionality of our cultures. It doesn't have to be Mexican for me to say it is also mine, it is also yours. Same with Puerto Rico: Reggaetón is no longer ours. It belongs to the world, even if it came from there. Same with "Maria la del Barrio," and novelas. The references in the movie are both a celebration to the things that unite us collectively as Latino, and also references we are canonizing in this fictional world.
RM: Speaking of Carapax, his story is fascinating in that it brings in the real history of the School of the Americas. Can you talk about the decision to bring in that part of the story?
AS:
To me, it was important to explore that in Hollywood, Latinos are always introduced in the middle of the paragraph. We enter a scene and we're gangsters and narcos, we are violent and dishonest people, and no one questions why that is. And when a movie or a show explains why, it just says that we are like that because that's our nature. So, we've never been given the chance to explore the history of blood behind the violent behaviors in Latin America. And, come on, you don't have to be a rocket scientist or an erudite to do a simple Google search and learn about Yankee interventionism, and why that interventionism started in 1954 to protect the American [United] Fruit Company in Guatemala.
It was important for me to be able to show this villain who is not just Latino, but indigenous, and show why he is the way he is to a certain point. Because even though he is responsible for much of his actions, the reason why he is a villain is because his trauma was weaponized. And when you see it, you understand he is a victim of the endless perpetuating of violence in Latin America by the CIA through the School of the Americas, but no one talks about that. No one talks about the start of neoliberalism in the School of the Americas in 1973 with the murder of Allende and the placement of Pinochet.
It was important that the film reflected that reality that is not taught at school. It is why Susan [Sarandon's character] represents the Military Industrial Complex, and the rampant imperialism that exists in Latin America. She is a person that has been perpetrating trauma, and then using that trauma like the School of the Americas, which trained the locals so they'd invade their own people. There is nothing more nefarious than that, so it was important to me to have that exist in this movie, if only for a minute. Using fantasy to raise curiosity could help us be better informed and more emphatic.
When I joined the project, I wanted the movie to be somewhat anchored in realism, in real traumas that Latin America has experienced historically. But I wanted it to be recent, not to just go all the way back to Columbus, though we do tumble a statue of Columbus in the movie. We talk about the more recent and relevant history, the one that is not talked about, but should be remembered so it is not repeated.
And the name is a bit ridiculous, and some people may not realize this is actual history, so we intercut Carapax's flashbacks with archival footage of the School of the Americas to make it clear this is real. RM: The character is also indigenous, and you bring Carapax's native language into the movie, too. AS: Yes, we had him unlock his memory, and his language. It is an allegory for how colonized or imperialist education works overtime to erase our history and make us forget where we come from, because it makes it easier to control. We wanted to make this situation where, at the end of the day, his memory is freed and he can look back to the source of the trauma, and understand everything that happened to him. His being able to talk in his native tongue is the most explicit way to show that he could return to his origin and empower himself by that origin, to close that chapter and sacrifice his own master for the greater good.

Hola, a friend and I are thinking about doing a sightseeing trip to Madrid in the middle of november. Do you have some insider tips what we should see? :)
hi anon, yes of course !!!
so, one thing about madrid, it isn't a monument city but a walking city. i'd say walking through the city center, centered around the two main squares, puerta del sol and plaza mayor (both also massive tourist hotspots so expect a ton of people). just walking around that area, around arenal street, calle mayor (main street), carretas street and others is enough to get a feel of the oldest part of the city (also called 'madrid the los austrias' or 'austrian madrid', when spain was ruled by the habsburgs). it's my favourite area honestly, alongside the barrio de las letras, which you can get to walking or in a few metro stops. its name translates to 'neighborhood of the letters' because a ton of writers lived here, and you can find phrases from spanish literary classics engraved on the streets, it's lovely.
apart from that central area, other cool spots i would really recommend you should check out is gran vía (busiest street in the city, it literally translates to 'broadway', it has a ton of theatres as well), malasaña (hip arts district, love the vibe, also it's so beautiful and there's always stuff going on, really nice place to go out at night as well), chueca (next to malasaña, it's the queer district!!! also very beautiful), debod (my actual favourite place in the city!!!!!! it's this hill that holds an egyptian temple - the temple of debod - that was gifted to spain after the aswan campaign, you can visit it and also the views from the city from here are lovely, you can find the best sunset here), el rastro (the largest flea market in the country, you can visit it every sunday, you can find anything here. also nearby, in the cuesta de moyano, there's a book fair also open only on sundays), retiro park (our main park, really pretty, it's very nice to just chill; it also has a lake you can row on, and cool statues and stuff), and the royal palace (it's open to the public if that's your thing, but the area around it is very very nice, i always end up here when i hang out with my friends).
now let's talk museums!!!! madrid has a ton of museums, i'll tell you the ones i recommend but depending on what you're looking for there's probably something for you. important to note is that at least the prado and the reina sofía museums are free everyday one hour before they close !!!!!! important !!!!!! check in case there's other museums that do this, but i'm unsure, i think it's those two and maybe the thyssen?
so. the main three art museums in madrid are the prado museum (the counterpart of the louvre, that sorta vibe), the reina sofía museum (our modern art museum, only stuff from picasso onwards), and the thyssen museum (ngl i haven't been here, it's a private museum made out of the collection of this one countess). all of them (more or less) are in the prado boulevard, which is also very nice to walk by so it's always lovely to go there even if you don't enter the museums. nearby there's also the national archaeological museum, my personal favourite one.
other smaller but also cool museums that i love are the madrid history museum (the facade is insane, also has tons of cool maps of the city), romanticism museum (an old romanticism-era palace with romanticism-era paintings and other stuff), cerralbo museum (underrated af; it is the personal collection of this one noble, the building itself is absolutely insane), and the sorolla museum (if you like sorolla this is your place!).
(i'm nearly done i swear)
if you have time and want to visit a nearby city, my recommendations are: alcalá de henares (really close to madrid, it has the second oldest university in spain, with a medieval feel to it, it also has the madrid archaeological museum - it was a roman foundation under the name of complutum - and most importantly, it's known for being the birthplace of miguel de cervantes, writer of don quijote!!!! you can visit his house, it's now a museum :), el escorial (deep in the mountains, it has the monastery of el escorial, maximum icon of spanish renaissance, it was the winter palace of the monarchy and holds the royal crypt, where most of spanish monarchs have been buried), toledo (oh if you love medieval cities you'll love this one. it was the first capital of spain, and it is most known for being the city that during the medieval times had christians, muslims and jews living peacefully. there's tons of churches, mosques and synagogues to visit, and it is very well preserved, with narrow steep cobblestone streets, cannot recommend it enough), and segovia (toledo is to the south of madrid, and segovia to the north! it is most famous for its roman aqueduct, the best preserved and highest in the country, and it also has a ton of historical buildings, including its alcázar, a palace that inspired the sleeping beauty castle !!!!!). also it's not a city but there's a national park in madrid, the sierra de guadarrama national park and it's super beautiful, it's this lovely mountainous area perfect for hiking or just chilling, and depending on when in november you come, you might see snow!
as a final warning!! i don't know where you're from but in november madrid is probably colder than you are expecting so make sure to pack some extra layers just in case !!!
#ask#madrid#sorry for the long post anon. but you asked for it#(but again. sorry)#hope this is helpful!#and if you have something in particular in mind of some kind of activity or a kind of place of visit#let me know so i can further help#also about guadarrama !!!#the national park is just part of the mountain range of the guadarrama mountains#and personally i haven't been to the park but i've been to other places in the guadarrama mountains and i can't recommend them enough#just going anywhere in the mountains is <3333#i would recommend the hayedo de montejo (the southernmost beech forest in europe!)#the boca del asno which is a popular picnic spot#navacerrada is the most famous ski town. maybe it will be opened in november but i'm unsure? there's cool trekking paths tho and it's easy#to get to via public transport#also !!!! la pedriza !!! which is this cool mountain (?) group of mountains (?) with these big rock formations that look funny#and there's a ton of mountain goats there as well.#anddd in the town where la pedriza is located (manzanares el real) is a really cool castle used by the templars#one of the best preserved medieval castles i've been to#definitely the best one in madrid#i almost added manzanares el real to the list of places to see next to madrid but it didn't feel important enough#there's also other places as well like again. if you want more info about specific stuff feel free to let me know!!!#also with public transport you should be able to get everywhere. the metro is (maybe a bit confusing) pretty reliable

It's important to have people from the cultures you're trying to represent in your team both as writer and consultants, and it would be good to give the opportunity for actors of said culture and ethnicities to play the characters.
It is also important (in general you know?) To have people with common sense
Because this whole Primos debacle has only reminded me of Mucha Lucha.
A show that 21 years before made everything that shit show tried better because it was made with respect
Made by Lili Chin (Australian Woman of Chinese descent) and Eddie Mort (British Man living in Australia) both of whom loved Lucha Libre (Mexican Wrestling) so much that they wanted to make an animated show about it while respecting latine culture and Mexican culture specifically.
The show has two brown main characters La Pulga and Ricochet, a girl main character Buena Niña who embodies idealized ideas of smart and proper girls that respects and loves her parents while KICKING ASS TRANSFORMING INTO A LITERAL BULLDOZER.
La Pulga's parents owned a Taquería. Which I get it if you think "well of course the Mexican characters own a Taquería". But A) They're all Mexican and B)I don't think you understand how much Mexican people love tacos. And with good reason, they're delicious. Plus they both love their son and their restaurant very much and love the community they work with.
And the premise of the story worked with this fantasy of "Everyone is a Superhero Wrestler" that later stories like My Hero Academia would do too.
But I want to call attention to the Intro. Given that not only is all we have of that trainwreck Disney tried to produce but also because...well, you see when Lili and Eddie decided to produce the iconic Opening of Mucha Lucha they wanted it to be:
1)In Spanish
2)Done by a Mexican band
3)For it to be a C U M B I A
So they got Chicos de Barrio to play it and
IT
FUCKING

Hi Lyra! I hope you're doing well. For your writer's ask game, can I have 3, 8, 23, 40, and 45 please? (I hope that's not too many 😅). Thank you so much, dear! Cheers!! 🥰
Hiya Acacia! I’ve been doing well I hope you have been too 🥺💕! Of course you can, and this isn’t too many don’t worry 😁, I hope you enjoy them!
3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?
I’m not too sure if these are tropes but I notice I like to include head pats and wearing each others clothes in my fics 😆! I also notice I tend to write people sighing a lot which…is a very bad habit of mine that i’ve been trying to break *for years*. But the headpats and clothes is what i notice I tend to include in my fics so I think those are probably the most characteristic things in my fics!
8. What song would make a great fic (to either write or read)?
I have so many of these 😭! But this one would be perfect imo 👀.
“Have We Met Before?” By Eric Nam and Sarah Barrios!
I can already imagine it being either a fantasy or just modern fic where these two meet and feel this strange pull towards one another and they keep asking themselves (and each other) have we met before? And it turns out that they actually used to be lovers or friends in a past life before they were tragically pulled apart 🤧!
The fantasy aspect could be where only one of them recognizes the other and tries to keep them at a distance so they won’t have to go through the pain of losing their lover again in this life (like they did before) and aaahhh I would love to read or write it 😭🤧💕!
23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?
I have so many 😭! Right now as far as AU’s that I’d like to try and write…maybe medical? I like watching medical shows and have some medical knowledge (not much admittedly) and I think it would be fun and chaotic to imagine everyone being in a hospital and as doctors and nurses 😁!
Also I’d love to write a “Shakespeare in Love” type fic someday, although, I doubt i’ll be able too 😅!
40. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?
Hm it depends 🤔! I’m usually a “one and done” kind of person, but if I really like a fic I’ll re-read them 😁! For example I’ll re-read a lot of the collabs I’ve done or I’ll re-read a lot of works my mutuals have put out (especially their next gen stuff 😅👉👈)! So it depends, but I do love re-reading fics 😁!
45. What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?
Besides researching I think my vocabulary is something I’ve improved on 😁! I tend to google or look at thesarus’s now when i write more than I used to and I think it’s made my writing a little better and a little more interesting!

I don’t care that it doesn’t have a fandom, i gotta get this off my chest. I couldn’t finish watching paquita la del barrio series because theres way too much filler about characters who i really don’t care about, particularly regarding “Clara” and “Camilo”.
I would have wanted to continue watching it if the stories revolved more around the actual main character, i get that they probably wanted to add more drama or whatever but if they wanted to do a novel they should have just made one instead of trying to mix an autobiography with a soap opera.
I was told from my niece who did watch it to the end that they never stop including clara in the story somehow.
It’s so annoying, just think the writers wanted to give the story a villain but was it really necessary?

Here’s a run down of what happens in the honorably mentioned soap operas: in la usurpadora (the usurper, translated) an evil twin (Paola) falsely accuses the good twin of burglary and blackmails her (Paulina) into going to live at Paola’s house for a year with her husband, stepchildren, mother in law, sister in law and brother in law (who she’s having an affair with) so Paola can travel the world with another man she was having an affair with. Their mom (Paula) separated them at birth but never told either daughter, Paola was raised rich and Paulina is poor. Also Paulina pretends to be sick for all that time to avoid having sex with Paola’s husband because she’s a virgin. Huge Madonna vs whore plot device happening here as it usually does in every soap opera.
She saves everyone from their problems in the family and falls in love with the husband who by that point is thinking about cheating with his cousin that is madly in love with him. They find out, she runs away, but then comes back to help the guy find his son, Paola runs off with another lover but then comes back but then the family realizes they prefer the good twin, so Paola sends her to jail for stealing her identity, she gets acquitted, Paola dies after a car crash she causes and after some more drama Paulina marries the widowed husband of her sister.
That’s literally Paola’s reaction after she found out her husband bad been shot by her brother in law
In María la del barrio (Maria from the neighborhood, translated), a poor orphaned girl gets taken in by a rich old man and his family doesn’t really like her because she’s poor, but they soon warm up to her including the rich guy’s son starts liking her but his cousin (Soraya) who is madly in love with him and wants to marry him for his money pretends she’s pregnant by him so he can marry her. And then Soraya tries to kill someone and falls off a high balcony and dies. But people really warmed up to the villain because she was absolutely evil so the writers brought her back. And then like 15 years later she decides to come back to get her revenge on Maria who is now married to the guy that was her brother and had a kid. Tiktok books have nothing on soap operas (both of these are from the 90s).
And Soraya married some guy and kills him and has a step daughter who is sick. Soraya starts having an affair with Maria’s son and but later he gets involved with her step daughter and Soraya attacks her
AND THATS WHATS HAPPENING IN THE ICONIC GASPS IN SPANISH MEME
And more drama happens, Maria loses her memory a couple of times, gets sent to jail and then Soraya tries to kill Maria and dies on a fire. But honestly she survived falling from a high balcony, so who the fuck knows
Also the actor who plays the love interest who is also loved by a cousin is the same guy.
All three novelas are loved by public for one reason only: the most unhinged comically evil villains are evil for the sabe of being evil.
Whenever I see someone who is not Brazilian using this gif I wonder if they know that it is from a Brazilian soapopera from the 2000s called senhora do destino (mistress of destiny) that has a chokehold on pop culture to this day
This character is the villain of the story, who steals a baby from another woman and raises the kid as her own. She kills a bunch of people usually by pushing them down the stairs or with scissors and this scene from the meme is her slowly going mad when she realizes she’s getting her comeuppance and going to prison. It is a tragic story but she is a meme because she is stereotypically evil and has lines that are comical and are memes 20 years laters such as seeing a gay couple and going “dykes… I can smell the leather”
This one just says “Maria de Nazaré Tedesco, that big hot blonde”
This one is just “first you get born again then you brush your teeth, do some gurgling and then you get a grip on yourself”
she’s evil and iconic, a villain like no other

Eternal Avenger (8)
Papi tengo hambre – dijo Karli entrando a la cocina
Y yo – dijo Joaquín siguiéndola
Ya somos tres – dijo Sam
Entonces a comer – dijo Bucky
– dijo Agatha apenada – tú no sabes nada
¿saber qué? – dijo Karli
No – dijo Agatha – olvídalo.
No – dijo Agatha –.
Gracias – dijo Sam – Carol…
No te preocupes
