Elizabeth Taylor made her stage debut alongside Richard Burton in “World Enough and Time.” The purpose of the poetry reading event was to raise funds for the American Musical and Dramatic Academy of New York.

Richard read three works: Andrew Marvell’s “To His Coy Mistress,” D. H. Lawrence’s “The Snake,” and William Shakespeare’s “St. Crispin’s Day Speech.”

Elizabeth read four: Thomas Hardy’s “The Ruined Maid,” William Butler Yeats’ “Three Bushes,” “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and “My True Love Hath My Heart and I Have His” by Philip Sidney.

They had fun with the audience, selecting poems that poked fun at their public image at the time.

The evening was a great success; in addition to raising the necessary funds for the academy, the audience gave the Burtons a standing ovation.

Elizabeth and Richard’s friends, including Montgomery Clift, Lauren Bacall, Carol Channing, Dina Merrill, and Hume Cronyn, attended the event in support.

🦜Background🦜

Scarlett was born into a prominent Scalding Sands family, the eldest of three daughters. Her father is a royal diplomat who can track his lineage back to the time the Sorcerer of Sands is rumored to have lived. Her mother is a former musical theater star from whom Scarlett and her sisters inherited a love of music and dancing. 

Scarlett’s magic manifested at a young age and she has been attending arcane academies since she began school almost a decade ago. She also began studying traditional Scalding Sands dance styles with her sisters when they were still children. Later in her childhood, Scarlett attended a summer dance camp in the Land of Dawning. There she met two people who would soon become her closest friends during that summer,Taima and Kieran. 

Taima and Scarlett would reconnect when they both began attending Three Graces Academy (though soon drifted apart since Scarlett was a year younger and a grade lower) but she wouldn’t see Kieran again until she came to NRC who was at that point a junior. Between the prospect of meeting old friends, and already something of a prodigy as a young mage, Scarlett is greatly looking forward to what adventures fate has in store for her at NRC.

🦜Appearance and Personality🦜 

Scarlett has a milky white complexion, fiery red hair and eyes which are a mix of amber mixed with green, a mixture of her parent’s eye colors. Though her hair appears as a bob, there is actually a long ponytail tied in the back and secured with a gold barrette shaped like a feather. This is invisible most of the time but sometimes rests on her shoulder if she’s been moving around a lot. Her cheeks have a naturally red tint most prominent under her eyes that make her face appear flushed even when she isn’t flustered. It’s her one insecurity since it’s something Kieran likes to tease her about. She wears most of her uniforms in a pretty standard fashion but with her dorm uniform, Scarlett like to wear ten gold face gems around her eyes, five on each side. 

Personality wise, Scarlett is a bubbly, energetic girl who brings good vibes wherever she goes. Her sweet personality immediately wins the hearts of her clubmates and she gets along best with Taima, Danica and surprisingly, Iman. Though pretty easygoing, Scarlett can be a little impulsive and doesn’t always think things through, particularly when she’s anxious. She doesn’t become anxious often, usually only when Kieran is around.

🦜Other Skills/Talents🦜

Mimicry ~ Scarlett has the interesting talent of being able to mimic people’s voices and speech patterns almost to perfection. So much so that Kieran has suggested that could end up being her UM. 

Dancing and Acrobatics ~ Scarlett is a talented dancer most skilled in hip hop, jazz and the traditional styles of Scalding Sands. She’s also quite flexible and is able to pull off many kinds of leaps and turns that her senior club members might struggle with. She also loves raves and her favorite styles of music to dance to is techno and EDM. 

Cooking ~ Scarlett is also a pretty decent cook and her favorite thing to make is raspberry jam cookies.

🦜Trivia/Lore🦜 

🦜Scarlett was the only girl selected for the Black Swans after an audition of nearly 30. It ended up being a near tie between her and Albani but Scarlett just managed to surpass her when Iman had both girls improv to a techno song and she proved superior despite not having the best vocals. Albani ended up becoming a reserve member. 

🦜As an idol, I'd liken Scarlett most to Leeseo from IVE.

🦜Scarlett’s Relationships With My Other TWST OCs🦜

Because Scarlett is a freshman a year after the current timeline, she hasn’t had much of a chance to interact with the canon twst characters save for her two dorm leaders. She’s on decent terms with them both but is better acquainted with most of my OCs. 

She gets along with most of them except for Albani who holds a grudge against her for outshining her at their club audition. Being a part of the Black Swans is one of the things Scarlett loves most about life at NRC and she affectionately refers to all her clubmates as her swan sisters. Because she knew Taima previously, she’s closest to her.

The sun was setting on a quiet evening as you sat on the rooftop of your apartment building, looking out at the city below. It had been a few months since you lost someone close to you, and the pain was still fresh in your mind.

You couldn't shake the feeling of loss, of longing for the one you loved to come back to you. Every day was a struggle to get through, and it seemed like nothing could make it better.

But tonight, as you sat alone on the rooftop, you heard a voice behind you that made you jump.

"Hey, what are you doing up here all by yourself?"

You turned to see Bangchan, one of your closest friends, standing behind you with a small smile on his face.

"Oh, Chan, it's just you," you said, relieved to see him.

He walked over to where you were sitting and took a seat next to you, looking out at the city with you.

"You know, you don't have to go through this alone," he said softly.

You looked at him with tears in your eyes, feeling a lump form in your throat.

"I know," you said. "But it's hard. I miss them so much."

Bangchan put his arm around your shoulders, pulling you close to him. You leaned into his embrace, feeling a sense of comfort wash over you.

"I know it hurts," he said. "But you have to remember that they wouldn't want you to suffer like this. They'd want you to live your life to the fullest, even if they're not here with you."

You nodded, knowing that he was right. You had to try to move on, even if it felt impossible.

Bangchan sat with you for a while longer, talking about anything and everything to take your mind off things. He made you laugh, telling you stories about his experiences in the music industry and his members.

For a moment, it felt like everything was okay. Like you could forget about your pain and just enjoy the moment.

But as the night grew darker and the cold set in, you couldn't help but feel a sense of dread creeping up on you. You knew that you would have to face your pain eventually, no matter how much you wanted to run from it.

"Chan," you said softly. "Do you ever feel like you're going to die?"

He looked at you with concern in his eyes, sensing that something was bothering you.

"What do you mean?" he asked.

"I mean like, do you ever feel like your time is running out? Like you're going to die soon?"

Bangchan took a deep breath, looking out at the city below before turning back to you.

"I think everyone feels like that sometimes," he said. "But it's important to remember that life is precious. We have to make the most of every moment we have."

You nodded, feeling a sense of comfort in his words.

"I just wish I could go back in time and change things," you said, tears streaming down your face.

Bangchan wiped away your tears with his thumb, looking at you with a sense of understanding.

"I know," he said. "But we can't change the past. We can only learn from it and try to do better in the future."

You looked at him with gratitude, feeling a sense of warmth in your chest.

"Thank you, Chan," you said. "For being here for me."

“Fly me to the moon / Let me play among the stars / And let me see what spring is like / On Jupiter and Mars / In other words, hold my hand / In other words, baby, kiss me.”

It would be nice if the romantic comedy Fly Me To the Moon were as simple, frisky and romantic as the song from which it took its title. Honestly, sometimes it does reach those heights, but it has too much going on plot-wise and not enough romance and comedy to keep its story airborne.

That’s a shame, because this is one of very few rom coms which will be widely released this summer. I was hoping that this film would ignite, but that only happens periodically.

Fly Me To the Moon captures a particular place and time in American history – Cape Kennedy, Florida on the eve of the 1969 Apollo 11 launch and man’s first walk on the moon. It has an interesting cast of characters – scientists, astronauts, marketing specialists, shady government agents, far right-wing politicians and egomaniacal Hollywood directors. It’s old-fashioned, and yet it has things to say about modern society as well.  

So why does Fly Me To the Moon only sometimes reach lift-off?

Simply put, because they were trying to do too much. Added into the dish like an unnecessary spice is a whole section based on the old conspiracy theory that the moon landing was a fake made on a soundstage – quite possibly by Stanley Kubrick. (I will give Fly Me To the Moon props for a clever Kubrick gag in the middle of the action.)

This not-so-little subplot does not appear in the story until about an hour into the film, and honestly, it’s an unwelcome addition. Not only has the fakes space mission storyline been done way too often on film already – from the mostly forgotten but surprisingly good 1970s thriller Capricorn One to more recent films like Moonwalkers, Dark Side of the Moon and others. Hell, it was even a quick sight gag in Minions, which may be proof positive that this story is overdone.

To be quite honest, I think Fly Me To the Moon would have worked better had they simply jettisoned that storyline and had done a straight romance around the NASA launch of Apollo 11. The faking story makes more than one of the main characters look bad on a regular basis. Sure, it does give more ammunition to Woody Harrelson playing the shadowy Nixon operative behind the scheme – and Woody is very funny here – but he was very funny well before this plot thread was introduced. They could have found more for him to do in the original narrative.

Because what Fly Me To the Moon is really about – or at least it was until the storyline took that hard right turn – was the timid romance between two very different types of people who meet working on the leadup to the launch.

The woman is Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson), a smart, flirty and somewhat cynical public relations professional who has a sketchy past and some questionable methods. She has been hired by the government to start a buzz on the space program, which is still reeling from the tragic explosion of Apollo 1 a couple of years earlier. She has the hair of an astronaut’s wife, blood red lips and the va-va-voom pants suits and capris of a pin-up girl – all of which she uses to disarm the sexist guys she always has to deal with in business.

The guy is Cole Davis (Channing Tatum), the rather humorless former-aspiring-astronaut and scientist in charge of the mission. You can tell how button-down Cole is because throughout the length of the film he wears the exact same style of shirt – just in different colors. (He also has an odd-modern looking short-but layered haircut which is far from the crew cut which someone in his position would have worn.) You can also tell that he is repressed because the first time he meets Kelly – in a local diner – he acknowledges she is the most attractive woman he has ever seen. Still, he cock-blocks himself, telling her that he can’t get involved with anyone because of bad timing and the importance of his job.

I guess we should look at the elephant in the room here. While Johansson and Tatum are both undoubtedly gorgeous, they have very little chemistry together. This is mostly on Tatum’s side – and it may not even be the actor’s fault, it may just be the role as written. Still, it is a little hard to root for a happy-ever-after for these two.

However, taking a look at the space program at the height of its importance is endlessly fascinating. Had they maintained the view at the actual space landing rather than showing the less interesting attempts to recreate it, Fly Me To the Moon may have been something special. Instead it is a fairly good movie which had the potential to be very good.
