This Disney Villains crossover collage is of Dr. Facilier and the Evil Queen Grimhilde, as part of my crossover collage series of Disney Villains, to mark the countdown to Halloween. The time of year when Disney gives their villains control of the rains.
The ship between their Once Upon a Time counterparts, Baron Samdi and Regina Mills, was the main reason for this collage.

Video Game Idea: Marvel vs. Capcom 4: Heroes Return
Hey! Marvel vs. Capcom is popular again! And it's all thanks to the recent account of Marvel vs. Capcom: Fighting Collection, a compilation pack of all the arcade MvC games and Marvel arcade games Capcom produced that's being released later this year.
This has gotten many people excited for three reasons...
This is the first time we've heard anything new about the Marvel vs. Capcom series in almost a decade!
This is the first time the games have been complied together
This possibly means that the Marvel vs. Capcom may actually be returning for a new installment in the near future
And this led many people to speculate and give ideas on what a Marvel vs. Capcom 4 would be like.
And since I like coming up with game ideas, I figured I'd hop on the train.
So sit back, relax, and join me while I take you on a train through my idea for the game....
Marvel vs. Capcom 4: Heroes Return!
(This is gonna be a short one, so bare with me)
Gameplay-wise, Heroes Return would essentially follow the same mechanics as Fate of Two Worlds, from the combat system to even bringing back being able to switch between three characters.
The new gameplay addition would the modified Team Combos.
Here, either two or three of your team can perform a Hyper Combo.
And it would be accompanied by actual names for the Combos, and a cool ass cinematic!
For the look of this game, it would bring back the cel-shaded look of Fate of Two Worlds, but obviously a little more polished with the advanced technology of today’s consoles.
Now we come to undoubtedly the most important part of the game: the roster.
Heroes Return would feature the biggest roster seen in the series by far, with a total of 100 characters (with there being 50 characters evenly for both brands).
And those 50 characters on both sides would be split evenly into two groups: Heroes and Villains.
Let’s start off with Capcom, since they deserve to go first after the bullshit they went through with the last game.
On the Heroes side, returning from the previous games we have….
.Ryu
.Chun Li
.Mega Man
.Viewtiful Joe
.Phoenix Wright
.Dante
.Amaterasu
.Strider Hiryu
.Arthur
.Morrigan
.X
.Monster Hunter
.Captain Commando
.Jin Saotome
.Frank West
As for the new Heroes, we have….
.Leon Kennedy
.Claire Redfield
.Luke
.Kimberly
.Victor von Gerdenheim
.Apollo Justice
.Lady
.Regina
.Masamune Date
.Sissel and Lynne
As for our Villains, the returning baddies would include….
.M. Bison
.Wesker
.Vergil
.Sigma
For the new Villains, we’ll be getting….
.Juri
.Vega
.Dr. Wily
.Manfred von Karma
.Grandmaster Meio
.Strider Hien
.Alastor
.Demitri Maximoff
.Lord Raptor
.Fatalis
.Scumocide
.Nemesis
.Alcina Dimitrescu
.Carlito Keyes
.Tyrone King
.Cyclops (Tyrannosaurus)
.Nobunaga Oda
.Hideyoshi Toyotomi
.Yami
.Astaroth
.Commander Sith
Now we come to the Marvel side of the roster.
On the Heroes side, our returning faces would consist of….
.Spider-Man
.Wolverine
.The Hulk
.Captain America
.Iron Man
.Thor
.Venom
.Cyclops
.Storm
.Psylocke
.Colossus
.Iceman
.Doctor Strange
.Iron Fist
.Deadpool
As for our new Heroes, we have….
.Nightcrawler
.Mr. Fantastic
.The Invisible Woman
.The Human Torch
.The Thing
.Ant-Man
.Wasp
.Daredevil
.Elektra
.Luke Cage
As for the Villains, the returning baddies include….
.Doctor Doom
.Magneto
.Sabretooth
.The Juggernaut
.Dormammu
.M.O.D.O.K.
.Ultron
In terms of new Villains, we have….
.The Green Goblin
.Doctor Octopus
.Carnage
.The Abomination
.Red Skull
.Baron Zemo
.The Mandarin
.Loki
.Enchantress
.Mystique
.Pyro
.Toad
.Baron Mordo
.Steel Serpent
.Diamondback
.Annihilus
.The Kingpin
.Bullseye
As for the stages, this game features total of 30: with 15 representing Marvel, while the other 15 represents Capcom.
On the Capcom side, we have….
.Genbu Temple
.Castle Wily
.Movie Land
.Courtroom
.The Demon World
.Kamiki Village
.Kazakh City
.The Ghost Town
.Zeltzereich Castle
.Metro City
.Space Fleet
.Fortune City
.Castle Dimitrescu
.Ibis Island
.Odawara Castle
As for the Marvel side, we have....
.The Daily Bugle
.The Weapon X Facility
.The Gamma Base
.HYDRA Island
.The Valley of Spirits
.Asgard
.The Danger Room
.The Sanctum Sanctorum
.Harlem
.The Baxter Building
.Asteroid M
.Shadowland
.The Negative Zone
.Jotunheim
.Latveria
And finally, this game would actually have a Story Mode! Being the first in the franchise to do so.
The first of actual worth....
Anyway, the story is pretty simple. It's essentially like Marvel Ultimate Alliance, except with Capcom thrown into the mix.
Essentially, an alliance between various Capcom and Marvel villains have been formed, led by M. Bison and Doctor Doom, who plan on using their combined skills and abilities to conquer the world and further their respective goals.
Luckily, this manages to catch the attention of Dr. Light and Nick Fury, who decide to retaliate by forming their own alliance of heroes to fight against them.
Once again, really simple story, but what will really make it engaging are the world-building and characters iterations.
The world of Marvel vs. Capcom has always been interesting to think about, since it appears to be a world where the Marvel and Capcom characters co-exists with each other.
But we've never really been given an in-depth look on what the world is like or how it works.
From what it seems like, the two brands have always shared this world.
And if that's the case, it would be cool to see how the corners of Marvel and Capcom connect to each other.
Or maybe this could like Battleworld from the Secret Wars event, where their world is the result of the Capcom worlds and the Marvel Universe being merged into one huge world!
As for the characters iterations, I can see so many between the Marvel and Capcom characters.
Some of the ones I can think of the top of my head include....
-Cyclops and Ryu being friendly rivals akin to the latter and Ken. Well, before Ken....ya know, fell off.
-Spider-Man and Morrigan being total besties and often throwing quips together while in battle.
-M.O.D.O.K. and Dr. Wily getting into constant arguments and trying to prove whose the better genius.
-Toad constantly simping for Juri, who as you would expect, isn't having any of it.
-Iron Man being a big brother figure to Mega Man.
-Hulk being an absolute dog person around Amaterasu.
-Deadpool constantly hitting on Chun Li, complimenting her thick legs, only to get his ass kicked every time.
-Magneto and Vergil bonding over their "I'm better than you" personalities, usually talking trash about their fellow villains behind their backs.
-Venom being Claire's big buddy and always telling her to...
youtube
Well that's all I have for now!
Let me know what you guys think about idea of mine's.
But most of all, let me know what you all think about the roster, since I believe that's the most important part of any Marvel vs. Capcom.
When making it, I wanted to make sure that both sides were perfectly even.
And for the Marvel side of things, I wanted to include faces from all over their universe rather than just utilizing the ones who are the big names in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And addition to that, there will be no MCU SYNERGY at all in this game.
Because we all know how much it helped the last game....

Shadow Queen high school au, if you want to :)?
I have no idea what High school AUs should have in them so... just have these:
1. Regina is studying in the most prestigious school her mother could find. It costs a lot but Cora wants the best for her daughter. Never mind that Regina doesn't want to go there.
2. Baron is also going to the school with the scholarship he won because he could never afford it otherwise. He starts a small "business" where he does tarot readings for the rich kids to earn some extra money.
3. Most of the girls are entranced. Especially if they get a reading they like. But Regina is just curious to see what he'll tell her. And she wants to see if it will come true and thus prove her mother's thesis that magic is all made up just like the fairy tales it appears in just a little.
4. Baron tells her there's love in the future for her which seems really unlikely considering her mother's eternal plans for her life so he lets her keep The Lovers card as proof. Cora sees the card, though, when it falls out of one of Regina's notebooks one morning in the car and she rips it to pieces before throwing it out the window showing Regina that she'll never be free of her mother's control.
5. When Regina opens her locker at school, though, the card is right there, waiting for her. It is the same one her mother destroyed but it is whole again, the lines where it was put back together just barely visible but there to prove it's the same card. She feels her heart bursting in happiness and then leaping in surprise when she turns around to find Baron behind her. He asks her put on a date and she accepts even when she knows her mother won't approve. He made sure the card survived even her mother's rage. So maybe a relationship between the two of them can too.

My 25 Favorite Films of 2020 (UPDATED)
Well, this was quite the crazy year, especially for movies. While many films that were slated to be released this year were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year still provided some laughs, tears, and thrills both in theaters and in the living room.
Here are my 25 favorite films of the year:
25. The Trial of the Chicago 7
Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin sits in the director’s chair once again in this courtroom drama about the real-life protesters who showed up in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. With themes that resonate today, The Trial of the Chicago 7 benefits from its sharp screenplay, well-paced editing, and an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Yahoo Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Frank Langella, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Michael Keaton.
24. Unhinged
In a year plagued by the pandemic, Unhinged led the way to the revival of movie theaters back in August and perhaps in some ways it was meant to be the film to do so as the themes of a rage-fueled society and the lack of human connection carry weight. Russell Crowe stars, as the title suggests, as an unhinged psychopath whose road rage torments a woman and her adolescent son. Unhinged is the epitome of pure entertainment and is why we go to the movies. While it’s not quite the most sophisticated thriller of the year, it’s still one helluva ride.
23. Emma
Anya Taylor-Joy has had quite the year with both highs (The Queen’s Gambit) and lows (The New Mutants). But it began before the pandemic with the release of Emma, which she stars as the iconic Jane Austen title character, a socialite who meddles in the love life of others while refusing to acknowledge her own shortcomings in that department. Supported with a strong ensemble cast, beautiful production design, and comedic charm, Emma is not to be missed.
22. One Night in Miami
Regina King makes her directorial debut adapting a stage play about a fictionalize meeting of Sam Cooke, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Jim Brown. One Night in Miami is one of those films that’s completely carried by its cast and Leslie Odom Jr., Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, and Aldis Hodge all deliver with powerhouse performances as four American icons.
21. The Invisible Man
ln the era of remakes and reboots, very few are as good as Universal’s latest monster flick revival of The Invisible Man. Elisabeth Moss stars as a woman who believes she’s being haunted by her abusive ex-husband, someone she becomes convinced faked his own death and is stalking her without being able to be seen. Filmmaker Leigh Whannell, the writer behind the Saw and Insidious horror franchises, generates good thrills and high-wire tension with the help of high production value and a terrifyingly-good performance from Moss.
20. Dick Johnson is Dead
Documentarian Kirsten Johnson filmed a beautiful, intimate tribute to her father Dick Johnson, who has been suffering from Alzheimer's in the final years of his life. However, instead of dreading his death, both daughter and father embrace it by having him acting out several scenes of his over-the-top demises. Dick Johnson is Dead may focus on the subject manner of death, but this documentary actually celebrates life and the laughs that happen along the way.
19. The Wolf of Snow Hollow
Perhaps one of the littlest-known films of the year, The Wolf of Snow Hollow is not your conventional indie comedy horror flick. Writer/director Jim Cummings stars as an overly-heated police officer who attempts to get to the bottom of a string of murders in his small, snowy Utah town by what appears to be some sort of werewolf, though he remains unconvinced. Featuring one of the final performances from veteran actor Robert Forster, The Wolf of Snow Hollow uses its quirky sense of humor to stand out from the rest of the pack.
18. The Gentlemen
The Gentlemen is a fun, action-packed, crime caper from Guy Ritchie about the London turf war of drug kingpins. Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Goulding, Michelle Dockery, and Colin Ferrell all round out the strong cast, but its Hugh Grant that really steals the show as the comedically manipulative Fletcher, whose only allegiance is to himself. If you like a stylish film with well-choreographed violence and a fast-paced plot, The Gentlemen should be your cup of tea.
17. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Some of the best play-to-film adaptations are the films that feel like you’re watching a play, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is one of them. Produced by Denzel Washington, Viola Davis gives a transformative performance as Ma Rainey, known as the “mother of the blues” and the clash she had with a pair of White music producers, but she also butts heads with her trumpet player (played by the late Chadwick Boseman), who also has his own music ambitions. While Davis obviously gives other Oscar-worthy performance, it was Boseman who was able to show how incredibly gifted he was as an actor. And while the world lost him far too soon, at least his last role ended up being his greatest.
16. Boys State
Boys State is a fascinating documentary about an annual program that brings a thousand 17-year-old Texan boys together where they’re divided into two groups to form their own parties and election campaigns. The biggest takeaway from this teenage social experiment is how much these youngsters pickup the tactics of actual politicians (which in some ways is horrifying). What really carries the film are the select few it focuses on who are still young enough to be humble but cunning enough to know how the game is played. For better or worse, they make great politicos someday.
15. Mank
Citizen Kane is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made and Mank is a worthy tribute. Gary Oldman stars as the title character Herman “Mank” Mankiewicz, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind the iconic film. David Fincher (The Social Network, Gone Girl) managed to capture the epic scale of the 1941 classic that would make Orson Welles proud.
14. Soul
Soul is one of those rare existential Pixar films that goes beyond being children’s entertainment. Following in the footsteps of 2015′s Inside Out, Soul depicts what happens to the soul of a jazz musician who’s convinced his time on Earth isn’t over. While the universe created to explain how souls work and the plot that went along with it falls short of its emotions predecessor, Soul is still high-caliber among Pixar films and a great movie for both kids and adults alike.
13. The Kid Detective
One of the biggest surprises of the year was how good a movie starring and produced by Adam Brody was. Brody plays a washed up former kid detective who attempts to revive his once-celebrated career of solving mysteries by getting to the bottom of a murder in his hometown. The Kid Detective is a brilliant dark comedy from newcomer writer/director Evan Morgan with good laughs, plenty of plot twists, and a career-best performance from Brody, who proves he’s more than just the pretty face from The O.C. we all know him as.
12. Judas and the Black Messiah
Judas and the Black Messiah is an intense historical drama about FBI informant Bill O’Neal who infiltrates a branch of the Black Panther Party led by Fred Hampton, played by an Oscar-worthy Daniel Kaluuya. What felt like a high-wire thriller, filmmaker Shaka King shows he’s full of talent with likely a long, successful career ahead of him.
11 . Wolfwalkers
From the Irish filmmakers behind the Oscar-nominated films The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea comes their greatest animated feature yet. Wolfwalkers is a touching fantasy of an aspiring hunter Robyn who befriends a girl who can magically turn into a wolf in her sleep (aka a wolfwalker), but their relationship faces hurdles as Robyn’s father is hired to wipe out the wolves who live in the woods outside of the town’s perimeter. Wolfwalkers is gorgeous, riveting, and far more sophisticated than the average cartoon. It’s also easily the best animated film of the year.
10. Another Round
Perhaps the greatest work from Danish director Thomas Vinterberg to date, Another Round follows four unsatisfied middle aged men who decide to take a theory of task from a Norwegian psychiatrist, who concluded that maintaining a blood alcohol level of 0.050 will enhance their mental and psychological state. Mads Mikkelsen, who’s best known to American audiences as Hannibal Lecter in the short-lived NBC series Hannibal and the Bond villain in Casino Royale, offers a strong, nuanced performance as one of the four educators who embraces this drinking challenge in a film that provides an equal balance of chuckles, cringes, and emotional gut punches.
9. I’m Thinking of Ending Things
From the crazy mastermind of Charlie Kaufman, the writer behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Anomalisa, his latest on Netflix is too a mind-bender. I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a surreal, zany, and at times disturbing examination of the human condition as the nameless female protagonist played by an incredible Jessie Buckley mulls over breaking up with her boyfriend (played by Jesse Plemons) while visiting his parents’ house. Accompanied with a stellar production design and a crazy-good performance from Toni Collette as “Mother,” Kaufman newest cerebral feature lives up to his iconic reputation of filmmaking.
8. Da 5 Bloods
Spike Lee is one of the few genius filmmakers who is able to blend multiple genres together and his latest film is no different. Da 5 Bloods is an action adventure, buddy comedy, dramatic character study, and war movie all wrapped up into one about a group of Vietnam War veterans who return to the former battlegrounds to find the remains of one of their fallen soldiers as well as some treasure that they kept hidden years ago. With a strong ensemble cast that includes the late Chadwick Boseman, its longtime character actor Delroy Lindo who steals the show with his powerful performance. Da 5 Bloods is easily one of Netflix’s strongest films to date.
7. The Assistant
One of the first #MeToo-era films, The Assistant offers the day in the life of a low-level female staffer of a production company who is haunted by the presence of her Harvey Weinstein-like boss (who never actually appears in the film). However, rather than depicting the dramatics of sexual misconduct, The Assistant uses the common subtleties and nuances of the workplace yet maintains the same tension and heartbreak. Anchored by the remarkable, devastating performance by up-and-comer Julia Garner (Ozark), The Assistant is as important as it is well-done.
6. Minari
No film this year captures the pursuit of the American dream better than Minari. A Korean man moves his family from California to Arkansas to build a farm, which causes strain on his marriage. Writer/Director Lee Isaac Chung delivers a fulfilling and intimate film that is family drama and part coming-of-age with humor sprinkled throughout. Minari also benefits from a strong cast led by Steve Yeun of Walking Dead fame as the aspiring farmer desperate to provide for his kids, Yeri Han as the mother who struggles to adjust to the new lifestyle, and Youn Yuh-jung as the loose cannon grandmother who desperately tries to seek her grandson’s love and approval after she moves in with her daughter’s family.
5. The Father
The Father is a remarkable drama about an aging man named Anthony who refuses his daughter’s desire to hire a caretaker, but there’s a surprise element of suspense as the audience is essentially in the mind of Anthony, whose sense of reality is on shaky grounds. Anthony Hopkins gives his greatest performance in decades as a vulnerable man who simply wants to be left alone in his flat while Olivia Colman offers a painfully brilliant portrayal of a daughters who feels obligated to take care of her ailing father. With sharp writing and superb editing, The Father is one of the few films of the year that resonates after viewing.
4. Nomadland
Nomadland is an enriching, emotional, beautifully-made film from writer/director Chloé Zhao. Frances McDormand gives yet another stellar performance as a widow who embraces the nomad lifestyle and embarks on a self-discovery journey on the road. The cinematography is so stunning, nearly every shot looks like a painting. Nomadland is full of heart and one the year’s most standout films.
3. Promising Young Woman
What can be described as a #MeToo revenge thriller, Promising Young Woman is a heart-pounding rollercoaster with a dark, biting sense of humor. Emerald Fennell has proven to be a promising young filmmaker with her unique vision that resulted in a smooth, stylish feature debut. Carey Mulligan truly shines in the role she was born to play as the cunning, relentless Cassandra seeking vengeance on behalf of her best friend. Promising Young Woman is one of those rare films so satisfying yet keeps you begging for more even when it’s over.
2. Sound of Metal
Riz Ahmed gives the performance of his career as a heavy metal drummer and former addict whose sudden battle with going deaf upends his life. Sound of Metal is an incredible experience that gives a rare glimpse in the American deaf community which is enhanced by the remarkable sound design that helps the audience actually hear what the musician is going through. It’s truly one of the most rewarding films of the year.
1. The Climb
The Climb takes the generic “man sleeps with his best friend’s fiancé” storyline and turns it on its head. In his feature debut as writer and director, Michael Angelo Covino leads as the not-so-apologetic adulterer Mike and Kyle Marvin, who co-wrote the film, is the good-hearted Kyle who struggles to whether or not to forgive his best friend’s ultimately betrayal. Not only is The Climb is quirky and hilariously written, it’s a remarkably well-made comedy with some of the year’s best cinematography. Between a strong cast, a superb screenplay, and the extremely-high production value, The Climb is at the top of the mountain of 2020′s best films.

I’m anxious about the election and our crumbling democracy et cetera et cetera so I’m gonna distract myself by making some Oscar predictions, lol.
I don’t think I’ve officially made any yet, but with the nominations a good five months away, might as well start making some guesses!
All predictions in alphabetical order, not likelihood of happening.
BEST PICTURE
The Father
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Mank
Minari
News of the World
Nomadland
One Night in Miami
Soul
The Trial of the Chicago 7
Keeping an eye on: Da 5 Bloods; Judas and the Black Messiah; The Midnight Sky; The United States vs. Billie Holiday
Weird year!
It’s easy to imagine that the top four will shake out to be Mank (which will lead the nomination count, is a likely Director winner, and could easily take the whole thing), Nomadland, News of the World, and The Father. Beyond that, I have no idea!
Miami and Ma Rainey feel fairly safe.
I’m trying to manifest a Room-esque haul for Minari.
I don’t see Trial having the passion to carry it all the way to March as a top contender, but it’s basic enough to make it into Best Picture with support from actors and writers.
It’ll be neat to see if Soul can be the first animated nominee here since Toy Story 3.
BEST DIRECTOR
Lee Isaac Chung (Minari)
David Fincher (Mank)
Paul Greengrass (News of the World)
Florian Zeller (The Father)
Chloé Zhao (Nomadland)
Keeping an eye on: Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7); Regina King (One Night in Miami); George C. Wolfe (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom); Lee Daniels (The United States vs. Billie Holiday); Spike Lee (Da 5 Bloods)
Predicting winners this far out is a fool’s errand, but this will likely be an easy win for Fincher.
Again, I’m holding out hope for Chung and Minari, and it’s worth noting that the directors branch tends to appreciate movies anchored around a child performance -- Room and Beasts of the Southern Wild both surprised here, so it’s not totally unrealistic.
Unless something really wild happens, Zhao looks primed to become the sixth woman nominated for Best Director, and the first woman of color.
Regina King stands a chance at joining her, which would be really, really cool.
George C. Wolfe might get squeezed in if both Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis end up as frontrunners for their respective awards.
BEST ACTOR
Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom)
Tom Hanks (News of the World)
Anthony Hopkins (The Father)
Gary Oldman (Mank)
Steven Yeun (Minari)
Keeping an eye on: Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods); Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night in Miami); Lakeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah)
The late, great Boseman will officially be going lead for Ma Rainey, which makes things interesting. He would have been a slam-dunk winner in Supporting Actor, but in leading, he is now competing with Hopkins, whose reviews are out-of-this-world. It’s going to be awfully tight, and honestly, I don’t know who I’d predict to win right now. Either way, it’s all-but-guaranteed that Boseman will join the likes of Jeanne Eagels, James Dean, Spencer Tracy, Ralph Richardson, and Massimo Troisi as a posthumous acting nominee. If he wins, he’ll be the third, after Peter Finch and Heath Ledger.
Depending on how well Netflix handles all of their contenders, I’m worried for Yeun and Lindo here. I’d love for both to get in, but I just can’t see Hanks or Oldman missing out, especially if both of their films end up being major Best Picture contenders. Since I’m predicting Minari to do better than Bloods across the board, I’ll predict Yeun to make history as the first East Asian Best Actor nominee over Lindo.
Judas and the Black Messiah is basically the biggest question mark in the race right now. Its release and eligibility is up in the air and as are its category placement for its two leads (Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield). If the film comes out and delivers, I could see it sliding into Best Picture as well as nabbing a nomination for one or both of them. Actor is tighter than Supporting, though, so it might make sense for the studio to push previous nominee Kaluuya (who has the flashier role) into supporting.
BEST ACTRESS
Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom)
Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday)
Frances McDormand (Nomadland)
Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman)
Kate Winslet (Ammonite)
Keeping an eye on: Amy Adams (Hillbilly Elegy); Jennifer Hudson (Respect); Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman); Sophia Loren (The Life Ahead); Meryl Streep (The Prom)
Honestly, this category is deep this year. So much so that the five I left off (Adams, Hudson, Kirby, Loren, Streep) could make sense as a lineup in any other year, and I expect most of them will pop up at the different precursors (Streep won’t come near the Oscar -- probably -- but she is guaranteed a spot at the Golden Globes).
I can easily see a world in which Davis is the one to beat: her role is juicy as hell and a Best Actress Oscar feels inevitable for her. However, if Boseman ends up winning Best Actor -- which is very possible! -- the situation becomes a bit tougher. It’s really hard for movies to win both Actor and Actress unless they’re, like, top five Best Picture material, and I don’t know if Ma Rainey will end up that high.
Keeping a sharp eye on Andra Day! Early buzz is great, it’s a juicy role that’s already been nominated for Best Actress (Diana Ross in 1972), and this could end up being a real star-is-born type moment. She’s the only other person who makes sense to me as a possible winner.
Mulligan is my wildcard prediction, lol. She’ll probably miss out to someone like Adams (unless Hillbilly gets completely destroyed) or maybe even Loren (whose narrative writes itself).
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7)
Charles Dance (Mank)
Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah)
Leslie Odom, Jr. (One Night in Miami)
Eddie Redmayne (The Trial of the Chicago 7)
Keeping an eye on: Yahya Abdul-Matteen II (The Trial of the Chicago 7); Chadwick Boseman (Da 5 Bloods); Trevante Rhodes (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) Mark Rylance (The Trial of the Chicago 7); Jeremy Strong (The Trial of the Chicago 7); Glynn Turman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom)
It’s funny, for a little bit, it looked like some of the possible Best Actor contenders would be pushed supporting (Boseman and Yeun, specifically). Now... well, it’s looking weird.
Trial, which might not even end up a top 5 Best Picture contender, could easily snag two, maybe three, nominations in this category since Netflix announced they’re pushing every actor in supporting. Baron Cohen feels like the surest thing of that cast -- he has one of the flashiest roles and Borat 2 is only helping him stay in the conversation -- and I wouldn’t be surprised if Redmayne happened. He’s basically the lead of the movie. I’m curious if Abdul-Matteen or Rylance or Strong will be able to get in over them. The rest of the cast is (I think) DOA.
If I had to pick a winner today, I’d probably say Sacha Baron Cohen or Leslie Odom, Jr., whose performance as Sam Cooke seems to be getting a lot of attention (along with Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Malcolm X, who might be getting a leading push). That both have other huge projects this year that won’t get them Oscar nominations (Borat 2 and Disney+’s release of Hamilton respectively) only helps their narrative.
I have no idea about Charles Dance, lol. I’m only really picking him because he’s an old veteran character actor (which this category thrives on) and he likely has a major antagonistic role in the Best Picture frontrunner playing a real person (check, check, check!).
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy)
Olivia Colman (The Father)
Amanda Seyfriend (Mank)
Youn Yuh-Jung (Minari)
Helena Zengel (News of the World)
Keeping an eye on: Saoirse Ronan (Ammonite); Olivia Williams (The Father)
Can Close finally win an Oscar? Or will Colman snatch it from her yet again!? Will Seyfried get swept up in a Best Picture sweep?! Or will Zengel be the one place the Academy can reward News of the World in an above-the-line category?! So much excitement.
Predicting Youn over Ronan mostly in my expectation that Minari will be a bigger deal with the Academy than Ammonite, but conventional (racist) Oscar wisdom tells us that a four-time nominee like Ronan is more likely than a Korean older woman who is mostly unknown American audiences. We’ll have to see!

Veni, vidi, vici: Venice
Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, Can't Help Myself 2016
Summer is a time for travel, relaxation and inspiration. In August we visited Venice for the Biennale, grateful for the calm that enveloped the Gardini rather than the mayhem of the May opening. This year, curator Ralph Rugoff limited himself to one set of 60 artists, each providing a work for both the International Pavilion and the Arsenale. It was compelling to see this highly curated group of artists presented in two very different contexts.
Fragile Future Chandelier by Studio Drift and painting of San Sebastien by Andrea Mantegna, courtesy Carpenters Workshop Gallery
Although this is a year for the art, not the architecture, biennale, there are numerous design events and installations in Venice this fall, further connecting the two disciplines by engaging art collectors with the design world.
One of the highlights of Venice this year is the Dysfunctional show from Carpenters Workshop Gallery at C’a D’Oro, a late Gothic palazzo along the Grand Canal near the Rialto market. Rather than a white-box presentation, contemporary works by Vincenzo DeCotiis, Random International, Studio Drift and Virgil Abloh, are set in direct relationship with the architecture of the palazzo and the permanent collection of Baron Giorgio Franchetti.
Ocean Memories by Mathieu Lehanneur, courtesy of Mathieu Lehanneur
Under a Light Tree by Nacho Carbonnel, courtesy of Carpenters Workshop
If you’ve never visited the Venice outpost of the Prada Foundation, now is the time with an immersive installation of the Arte Povera master Jannis Kounellis. Though some of this work dates back to the 60’s it all feels incredibly contemporary, especially in the context of Prada’s 18th century palazzo, Ca’ Corner della Regina.
Chahan X Colnahi, Abbazia di San Gregorio, Venice
Our favorite interior designer / collector Chahan Minassian also took over a palazzo this year. Abbazia San Gregorio, near the Peggy Guggenheim along the Grand Canal, is installed with his signature mashup of art and design creating luxurious, ageless interiors. The courtyard and interior spaces include pieces by Chahan, Marie Khouri, Pierre Sabatier and Peter Lane interspersed with masterworks from the venerable art gallery, Colnaghi. By appointment only please see details here.
Mary Wallis / Suzanne Tick Woven Neon installation
Mary Wallis / Suzanne Tick have installed Woven Neon within Palazzo Michiel as part of Venice Design this summer. This adaptive reuse project is based on weaving light and creating visual wonder at the building's core. All aspects can by recycled, reconfigured and resized. Mary Wallis, neon and lighting designer, was key for bringing the concept to fruition with legendary weaver Suzanne Tick.
All of these installations are scheduled to be open through the end of the Biennale on November 24th, but double-check opening hours; it’s Italy after all.

Below-freezing temperatures and bulky outerwear can make winter a challenging time, sartorially speaking, but come January, the gloves are off—both literally and figuratively—when Hollywood’s jet-set touches down in sunny Los Angeles for award season. Thanks to a blockbuster year in film, music, and television, the 2019 red carpets are an opportunity to make a major statement. Here, we’ve shown an early spotlight on 23 actors and musicians guaranteed to land spots on the 2019 awards season’s best-dressed lists. Let’s start with a red carpet renaissance woman: Lady Gaga is going to have an epic award season. We can’t wait to see what she wears to the Golden Globes, the Oscars, and the Grammys when she wins big for basically everything A Star Is Born is nominated for; her style evolution has been a true Hollywood glow-up! A close second and perennial team Who What Wear fave, Emma Stone is bound to inspire your next black-tie event look when she hits the red carpets in 2019. Think she’ll take any notes from her character, Abigail Masham, in The Favorite and go full baroque, or keep it completely contemporary with the latest from Louis Vuitton? Speaking of The Favourite , Joe Alwyn , aka Baron Masham, aka the first earl of Leicester in Mary Queen of Scots , is guaranteed to have a memorable awards season (especially if Taylor Swift is on his arm). The 27-year-old British actor had a banner year with four movies premiering in 2018, and undoubtedly cribbed a few style notes from several of Hollywood’s leading ladies—we have a feeling his star status is about to skyrocket. Of course, award season wouldn’t be a must-watch moment if not for a little healthy competition. Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie , two of 2018’s best dressed and co-stars/rivals in Mary Queen of Scots , are absolutely going to slay—sartorially speaking. Spoiler alert: There’s a clear winner in the film (and, um, history), but we’d be absolutely thrilled if the top red carpet ranking featured a tie between these two sensational style stars. While we’re revisiting history, let us remember the ground-breaking, earth-shaking, and red carpet–rousing movie of the year, Black Panther . Boasting an all-star lineup and memorable world premiere in which the cast paid homage to African royalty, we hope this stylish crew—especially Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Leticia Wright, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, and Angela Bassett —continues its winning streak throughout award season. Wakanda forever! Crazy Rich Asians , one of the most over-the-top and enjoyable fashion films of the year, was a feast for the eyes both on screen and at the red carpet premiere. Constance Wu , the movie’s leading lady, worked with celeb stylist and Who What Wear contributor Micaela Erlanger for the press tour last summer, creating gorgeous looks for a range of appearances. We love how they play with fashion together and can’t wait to see which designer is selected for the Globes in January. Fashion’s latest It boy, Timothée Chalamet , had an incredible 2017 with Oscar-nominated films Lady Bird and Call Me by Your Name , and this year, he added Golden Globe nominee to his list of accolades. Not only does the Beautiful Boy star embrace bold colors and prints, but he’s also reportedly self-styled. We’re impressed! If you haven’t already heard of Kiki Layne , don’t worry—you will soon. Her breakout film, If Beale Street Could Talk , an adaptation of James Baldwin’s 1974 novel by Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins, has already been nominated for several Golden Globes ahead of its premiere. Kiki has a major year ahead of her with at least two other projects in the can, and we’re excited for her red carpet debut with Regina King, her fellow Beale Street star and Golden Globe nominee. Rounding out our list of film favorites is a newcomer, Elsie Fisher . At just 15, she has captured hearts as the cringe-worthy (in the best way!) ingenue of Bo Burnham’s directorial debut, Eighth Grade , which premiered over the summer. Elsie has already made an impression at smaller red carpet events, and she recently spoke to Vanity Fair about her affinity for suits, remarking, “I feel like suits are very me… I look poppin’ in ’em!” We couldn’t agree more. As far as red carpet style goes, we find musicians tend to be a bit more daring than actors, which is why we’re especially excited for the 2019 Grammys. One woman who never ceases to surprise us with her style chops is Cardi B, who is up for album of the year for Invasion of Privacy . Whether Cardi goes full-on glam, breaks a piece out of Versace’s archives, or debuts her upcoming collab with Fashion Nova, we know she’ll dress to impress—red bottoms, guaranteed. It’s no surprise that with the rise of the rosé wave in pop music came the return of cowboy boots . At the center of this ethereal yet empowering moment is singer Kacey Musgraves . The “Velvet Elvis” singer has already racked up several Country Music Awards but was recently nominated for album of the year for Golden Hour , transcending the confines of her genre, and presenting an opportunity to show off her unique mix of vintage-meets–high-fashion style at next year’s Grammys. We’ve had our eyes on Dua Lipa ever since she explained “New Rules” to us in 2017, and we were thrilled by her two Grammy nominations this year. Up for best new artist and best dance recording, this edgy British singer and street style star will undoubtedly make a major red carpet splash throughout 2019. Is there anything Tessa Thompson can’t do? In addition to her appearance in Janelle Monae’s much-buzzed-about “Pynk” music video, the Creed and Westworld star is a style chameleon who’s bound to thrive during award season—even if she’s just there to support her friends and castmates, the similarly suave Michael B. Jordan and Thandie Newton. Let’s talk about Lili Reinhart for a minute: Not only has she captured hearts as Betty (and Dark Betty!) on Riverdale for the past three seasons, but she’s also become a media darling, sharing insights into acting , acne , and of course, all things Archie. Notably, we love her brand-new campaign photos for the Mighty Company x Ilaria Urbanati celestial-inspired charity collection—hey, if anyone can pull of stars and stripes on a red carpet, it’s Lili. See you at the Emmys? If you haven’t already caught up on Atlanta , consider this an official mandate. You’ll probably recognize Zazie Beetz as Vanessa Keefer, Donald Glover’s character’s ex-girlfriend. Or maybe you remember her from Deadpool 2 as Domino, a mutant whose superpower is luck. Either way, Zazzie is definitely one to watch this red carpet season, especially since she’s being styled by Jason Bolden, whose other clients include Yara Shahidi and Sasha Lane. Be sure to look for her at this year’s Golden Globes supporting Donald, and hopefully again on the Emmys red carpet next fall. Finally, we’ve got the one and only Busy Philipps. Unless you’ve completely opted out of pop culture and social media this year, Philipps has been on your mind—or more accurately, on your phone! A forever fave from early aughts teen dramas Dawson’s Creek and Freaks and Geeks , Philipps has BLOWN UP in 2018 thanks to her hilarious commentary, candor, and colorful style which is broadcast via her Instagram, recently released memoir, This Will Only Hurt a Little , and new E! show, Busy Tonight . Working with stylist Karla Welch (who also counts Tracee Ellis Ross and Sarah Paulson as clients), you know Busy’s bound to bust a move, whether on the red carpet, in her nightgown, or at a tiny trampoline class. Think I missed any potential red carpet style stars of 2019? Hit me up on Twitter or Instagram at @Drewblahblah and we’ll put them on Who What Wear’s radar before the New Year. Up Next: From the Oscars to the Golden Globes, Cannes to the British Fashion Awards here’s where you’ll find the most glorious red carpet looks .
