‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 Behind the Scenes: How Fashion Defines Each Character (PHOTOS)
by Kelli Boyle
Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey (2011-2016) [mod note: on PBS in the US], set that upstairs-downstairs series at a palatial British estate on the eve of World War I. He moved his newest costume drama Stateside to the streets of New York City. Set in the late 1800s, The Gilded Age, which has its second-season premiere on Sunday, October 29 on HBO (streaming on Max), pits the new money of railroad barons against the old money of New York society. The powerful fight for control of the city and use their wealth to measure social success. And dressing for success was its own full-time occupation.
When researching women’s fashion in 1800s New York, the show’s costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone saw one thing clearly: “Their life was a catwalk. There was this enormous excitement” when the ladies trekked the bustling, dusty streets of Manhattan. Her job was to recreate that excitement for contemporary viewers of The Gilded Age.
Fashion as a Sign of Status
Who’s doing all this promenading? Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) arrived in NYC with no money and was taken in by her aunts Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and Agnes (Christine Baranski), both living off an inheritance. Then the newly affluent Russells—headed by railroad baron George (Morgan Spector) and wife Bertha (Carrie Coon), who is determined to break into polite society—moved in across the street.

The frill thrills continue in Season 2, especially in a pivotal garden party scene (pictured below) that TV Insider observed being filmed in September 2022 at New York’s lavish Old Westbury Gardens estate. (Westbury House was previously home to an heir of the Phipps family, real-life Gilded Age figures whose patriarch made his fortune alongside Andrew Carnegie at his steel company.) On set was Fellowes, whose smart black suit and tie were the only dark hues around.

Historically Accurate Costumes
It’s a testament to the wardrobe department that the stunning colors of the sprawling grounds nearly pale in comparison to the vibrancy of the women’s period garb. Despite the sepia-toned images in history books, Walicka-Maimone says, those bright tints are decidedly historically accurate. She has a library of more than 35,000 reference images to prove it.
“It’s shocking to our modern eye to see the explosion of color from that period,” she said. Production designer Bob Shaw (who won an Emmy for his work on Gilded Age) was present to share his creative process, which, just as Walicka-Maimone described of her own work, is “deeply steeped in history.”
Nicole Brydon Bloom joins the cast for Season 2, pictured here at the garden party with Blake Ritson’s Oscar van Rhijn (Credit: Barbara Nitke/HBO)
He does note that, when deciding between “what is correct and what feels correct,” the latter always wins. Creative liberties are taken to “build [character] histories into the costumes,” Walicka-Maimone added.
A Garden Party to Remember
Take Brit newcomers Dashiell Montgomery (David Furr) and his daughter, Frances (Matilda Lawler), for example. Nephew by marriage to Baranski’s Agnes, Dashiell requires more “toned-down” attire suitable for social outings, which contrasts with Season 1’s primarily business and formal menswear.
Aurora Fane (Kelli O’Hara) and husband Charles Fane (Ward Horton) attend the garden party in ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 (Credit: Barbara Nitke/HBO)
Dashiell must escort Frances through society in his late wife’s absence. One consideration for Walicka-Maimone: “This is a girl who doesn’t have a mother, so there’s probably extra care from all the other family members in [dressing her],” she said.
Meanwhile, Marian, who Jacobson said is “shining this season and sees herself in [younger] Frances,” will be more open to a strategic marriage. Marian’s “not necessarily cynical” after being jilted by Tom Raikes (Thomas Cocquerel) in last season’s finale, the actress continued, but the heartbreak gives her a “spice and edge.”
Don’t count out the possibility of a romance with Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), son of the railroad titan, which was teased last year. Jacobson shared: “They will definitely continue to deepen their friendship.” Old money and new money unite!

The adventures of two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne and Garth. From Wayne’s basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called “Wayne’s World” on local public access television. The show comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive who wants to produce a big-budget version of “Wayne’s World”—and he also wants Wayne’s girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra. [above: Celine Byrne, Paula Murrihy and Claudia Boyle for Irish National Opera, 2023]
So... I've started a tradition of bringing a group of friends to performances at the Metropolitan Opera and creating illustrated orientation guides to help everyone get prepared for each show. The next one is Richard Strauss & Hugo von Hofmannstal's Der Rosenkavalier, and I'm proud of how the document turned out... even if it does run to 23 pages 😅.
Some excerpts:
Illustration by Al Hirschfeld of the 1982 Metropolitan Opera cast: (L-R) the Italian tenor, Sophie, the Marschallin, Octavian, Herr Faninal, Baron Ochs
On the final trio:
Musically, the thing that really blew my mind about this number is the way it builds to an unbearably beautiful climax (3:33), then a heartbreaking chord change (3:43), then it feels like gravity turns upside down (3:50), then somehow goes sideways (3:59), then FINALLY resolves (4:10). I’ll never be able to adequately explain how this makes me feel. It blows past all expectations, again and again, and just when you start to catch your breath, the bottom drops out from under you again, revealing a whole new level that you never dreamed was possible.
The most common way to stage this scene is to spread the three singers across the stage, each processing their turbulent emotions alone to the audience. But I also like the staging from Zürich in 2004, which keeps them tightly together and even has the characters touch at key points. It also helps that all three performers look like they’re about to fucking explode.
Feel free to read and share, and let me know what you think!

Writing to Bentham till 3. Went to bed, but my head had got so awake and so full of B. that sleep fled. Rivisitazioni
Stracult!
Il successo nullo della pellicola impedì la trilogia, dato che erano già pronti The Fall Of The House Of House Of Blackenstein e Blackenstein III.
Franco e Ciccio
L’ultragore
Il Mostro È In Tavola... Barone Frankenstein (1973)
Versione Giapponese
Furakenshutain Vs Baragon - Inoshiro Honda, 1965
Grandissimo!
Sono super accette altre segnalazioni!

Rise of the Power of Autism
Why It's Not So Much More Case's, But Rather More Open Conversation In the past few years we have seen an increase in the number of people being diagnosed as Autistic. Even well-known public are talking about it. I myself am Autistic and this even got me talking, both to family, friends and colleagues. Yet before we go any further with this discussion I think it's better that we ask what it is that is actually going on first. Is it that more people are being diagnosed as Autistic, or just that far more individuals than before are just talking more openly and honestly about the issue? Now at the rate everything is going you would genuinely have thought that that in itself was probably more the case. Well before we all go down the 'Autism being the new thing' I would like to take a few moments to put my thoughts on this out there.... mainly because I see something different happening here. If we can cast our minds back a few years ago we have had several well-known public figures, or people with public profiles as I refer to them, go public with their disability. Just last year we had Christine McGuiness the ex-wife of Paddy McGuiness go public, Food Writer Jack Monroe, Environment Campaigner Greta Thunberg got a mention. Melanie Sykes, Anne Hegerty, Love Island's Niall Islam, Anthony Hopkins. Even Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle went public with her diagnosis and Morning Live and Crimewatch presenter Rav Wilding went publically discussed his after being diagnosed by Clinical Psychologist Sir Simon Baron-Cohen. As someone who was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome/Autistic when around preteens this is something I find absolutely remarkable. As mentioned in previous columns whenever I have openly spoken about it Autism wasn't something that was on the forefront of our minds or there on the tips of our tongues. It was very much a taboo subject of which a great many simply wouldn't discuss, either in public or privately behind closed doors. Yes I am talking 'that style of taboo'. In fact if anyone dared they would be treated far differently from any of their peers My official diagnosis came about in mid/late 90's and this was when the only known disabilities where conditions like Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Partial to complete visual blindness, hard of hearing to complete deafness and being confined to a wheelchair. Problems like Dyslexia, ADHD and Autism were pretty much unheard of to just ignored. Basically if you were Dyslexic you were thick, if you had ADHD you were seen as troublesome and disruptive and if you were Autistic people looked at you as though you were some kind of social weirdo. Some of this I found to my own unpleasant experience, and even I didn't want to talk about it. For me, I had seen children my age and younger and seen how they were viewed, looked down at and treated by their peers. This was partially because I was, to some extent, in denial about my diagnosis but also I just wanted to feel at least some sense of normality and be very much like my friends and peers. It was a conversation that I just didn't feel ready to have, or let wanted. With friends, family or anyone. However, as times have changed and as neurological disabilities such as Autism, ADHD and Dyslexia have become more known and seen on TV/film and stage etc it's resulted in a positive domino effect. I'll just give you a quick example; Jason Haynes from BBC series Holby City played by Jules Robertson. Here was a character who was on TV, was Autistic and went on to have a job, a girlfriend and a child. For me, I was looking at someone who was like me and it felt incredible and soon many people were talking about it and as a result social attitudes changed. And by god it was bloomin' brilliant. After that many more Autistic characters were coming thick and fast. I just viewed this, and still do, as something of a triumph as it enabled me to both come to terms with and accept my Autism as something positive, not to be embarrassed or ashamed of. So in my opinion it's not so much that more people than before are being diagnosed, it's more that many people are talking about it openly. And from what I've seen it's leading the way for others further down the line to continue talk until it becomes part of our everyday being Read the full article

Start of March update:
Stalled on rereading Liaden because I got distracted by the Inda series
Have also started rereading Heaven Official's Blessing
About halfway through Lord of Chaos
Am reading a nonfiction book though, Prisoners of the North by Pierre Berton. It's a collection of biographical essays about people who became obsessed with the Canadian north (especially Yukon) and one of the numerous Canadian pop history books scattered around my workplace. I've been reading them completely out of order, starting with the last one in the collection, Robert Service, because he's my grandfather's favourite poet, then the third, Jane Franklin, because, well, Jane Franklin, and now moving on to the other ones. So far I've finished Joe Boyle (first mining baron of the Yukon, also probably had an affair with the queen of Romania, terrible father/husband) and started Vilhjalmur Stefansson (arctic explorer who was still Weird About Inuit People, but at least thought they were people with expertise in living in the arctic, unlike some others I could name).
Have made no progress on Discworld or my physical tbr, besides finishing Babel a bit ago (very good! did find some footnotes a bit heavyhanded, but that may be the fact I've read far too much 19th c. fiction).
Reading goals for 2024
Read more fun non-fiction (fun is a loose definition. If its a class/research reading i like, it counts. If its a class reading I hate, it doesn't)
Finish reading Discworld
Finish re-reading Wheel of Time
Read more of my physical tbr
