[above: Celine Byrne, Paula Murrihy and Claudia Boyle for Irish National Opera, 2023]
So... I've started a tradition of bringing a group of friends to performances at the Metropolitan Opera and creating illustrated orientation guides to help everyone get prepared for each show. The next one is Richard Strauss & Hugo von Hofmannstal's Der Rosenkavalier, and I'm proud of how the document turned out... even if it does run to 23 pages 😅.
Some excerpts:
Illustration by Al Hirschfeld of the 1982 Metropolitan Opera cast: (L-R) the Italian tenor, Sophie, the Marschallin, Octavian, Herr Faninal, Baron Ochs
On the final trio:
Musically, the thing that really blew my mind about this number is the way it builds to an unbearably beautiful climax (3:33), then a heartbreaking chord change (3:43), then it feels like gravity turns upside down (3:50), then somehow goes sideways (3:59), then FINALLY resolves (4:10). I’ll never be able to adequately explain how this makes me feel. It blows past all expectations, again and again, and just when you start to catch your breath, the bottom drops out from under you again, revealing a whole new level that you never dreamed was possible.
The most common way to stage this scene is to spread the three singers across the stage, each processing their turbulent emotions alone to the audience. But I also like the staging from Zürich in 2004, which keeps them tightly together and even has the characters touch at key points. It also helps that all three performers look like they’re about to fucking explode.
Feel free to read and share, and let me know what you think!

#1 INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
AMC2022–
It was a tough choice choosing between Shōgun and Interview With the Vampire for the top spot, but the decision ultimately came down to the astounding narrative feat the AMC series accomplished in its second season.
Part 2 left New Orleans behind for post-World War II Paris, where Anne Rice’s beloved vampires Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson, who’s long overdue for Emmys recognition for his performance — Season 2 will be eligible next year) and daughter Claudia (the wondrous Delainey Hayles) attempt to make a new life for themselves after their attempted murder of their maker/Louis’ immortal companion, Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid, equally snubbed by awards shows for his Season 1 performance). Season 2 follows the second half of the eponymous Rice novel, which being the gothic, romantic horror story it is, ends in tragedy for this broken family of bloodsuckers but also in catharsis wholly earned after 15 episodes in a storytelling pressure-cooker.
The series at large, but Season 2’s fifth and last two episodes especially are examples of what TV can be when artists are given the carte blanche to create (another thing this and Shōgun have in common). Showrunner Rolin Jones and his team planted narrative seeds in the show’s very first episodes back in 2022 that wouldn’t pay off until these final hours, all culminating in multiple jaw-dropping reveals involving Lestat and Armand (Assad Zaman, one of the casting department’s greatest finds) that were decades in the making in the show and yet still unpredictable. (Season 3, The Vampire Lestat adaptation, is going to be even more uncharted territory.)
Like the Rice novel before it, Interview With the Vampire uses monsters to excavate the depths of human emotion, taking bigger and bolder swings with the source material than the 1994 film dared to do. Love and death, grief and remorse, euphoria and despair are all covered as Louis carries out his “odyssey of recollection” with investigative journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian at his best) in 2022 Dubai. At its core, the show is a remarkable exploration of a most basic but confounding human experience that we spend our lives navigating: there are many sides to every story, but no matter how strongly we feel that our version is fact, the one haunting truth is, multiple things can be true at once. Imagine unpacking that for all eternity. — Kelli Boyle

Hayles explains that final look, and it wasn’t to punish Lestat. It was “for help,” Hayles says. “She trusts him the most out of everyone in the room even though she hates him. They’re familiar with each other, so she’s turning to her parent to help her.” Anderson covers his face with his hands as he says, “Delainey! That’s so sad.”
Inside ‘Interview With the Vampire’s Most Tragic Hour: The Trial Explained by Kelli Boyle
Hayles remembered how much the narrow vision provided by her vampire lenses helped in the moment: "When you face forward, the stage lights are staticky, you just can't see," she said. "And then when I turned to him, away from the light, it was the first time that you could see somebody, but [it was] an outline. And I was concentrating so hard on his face, and it was so sad." She understood Claudia's last look to Lestat as how any child would look to a parent in a moment of distress. "The way that she looks is like all hope is lost, like, 'Dad, I need you.'"
Interview with the Vampire's Delainey Hayles and Rolin Jones 'Leaned Into Grotesque Beauty' for the Trial's 'Horrifying' End by Allison Picurro

Directing DRAINING THE SWAMP
ON TOUR IN MARCH/APRIL
A New play about British fascist leader Oswald Mosley...
What lessons are there for today when nationalism is once more on the rise across the Western world, and politicians like Trump and many more worlwide, are able to attack democracy and stir up violent protest? Draining the Swamp is a provocative new play, exploring these issues and challenging our approach to extremism. It raises questions and warns with a chilling contemporary punch. A Thought provoking and challenging new play.
"An incisive exploration of the rise of fascism"
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Counter Culture UK
"A first class piece of historical theatre"
⭐⭐⭐⭐ One4review
DRH productions present a new play by David Hill, directed by Exchange Theatre's artistic director David Furlong (MISANTHROPE, THE FLIES).
DRAINING THE SWAMP
Oswald Mosley was considered to be the most able politician of the 1920s, a Labour Prime Minister in-waiting. What caused a changed direction for this man, who then founded the right-wing British Union of Fascists, renowned for street violence and antisemitism?
Meet Sir Oswald and Lady Diana Mosley who were given a short, sharp portrait in the BBC Peaky Blinders series. Exploring the life and activities of the Fascist leader, from the 1930's to 1960's, discover the private personas behind the Fascist leader and his unorthodox wife, both vilified and adored in their lifetimes.
Was he the thuggish villain he is portrayed as? Was he deluded, dangerous or visionary? How critical was Diana's supporting role? Draining the Swamp unpicks the intentions behind the dangerous and controversial activities that Mosley led, inviting judgement about his legacy, and raising questions about parallels with contemporary British and American politicians. What is the democratic solution to managing politicians like Mosley today?

what lines of poetry would resonate most for each of the ROs?
Ohh I saw someone answer this the other day and I am here for it ❤
These are what would resonate with them as people, not necessarily about romance, I hope that's ok!
Murphy -
“Be silent and safe — silence never betrays you; Be true to your word and your work and your friend; Put least trust in him who is foremost to praise you, Nor judge of a road till it draw to the end.” ― John Boyle O'Reilly
Shae -
“I love the silent hour of night, For blissful dreams may then arise, Revealing to my charmed sight What may not bless my waking eyes.” ― Anne Brontë
Callie -
“It’s the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I’m a woman Phenomenally.” ― Maya Angelou
Toni -
“Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back. Those who wish to sing always find a song. At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet.” ― Plato
Claude/Claudia -
“to live in this world you must be able to do three things to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.” ― Mary Oliver
??? -
Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.” ― Mary Oliver

i feel like i'm so annoying being like JOE WILKINSON ROISIN CONATY but please understand i say it because it would be guaranteed hilarious 🥹
but okay okay let's think
first i think it would be funny to have some of the well-known bonafide smartypantses on, like jo brand, david and victoria, charlie brooker, clive anderson, richard osman, dara, and john oliver, because it's just funny as heck to see them get tripped up or stumped hehe and you may be thinking "what about stephen fry and sandi toksvig?" THERE IS NO STUMPING THEM. EVER. AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT.
there are lots of other lowkey smartypantses who would be so funny — paul foot, armando iannucci, adam buxton, elis james, lee mack, rhod gilbert, bill bailey, miles jupp, wild card suggestion is darragh from the chase he cracks me up. now, random people smartypants and otherwise i think would kill the format hmmm okay besides joe and roisin who mean everything to me, guz khan, lucy beaumont, prof. hannah fry, ed gamble, chloe petts, mel giedroyc, vic reeves, claudia, matt forde? could be quite funny actually and i think guy would laugh at him a lot?, ahir shah, jess hynes, nish kumar, judi love, johnny vegas, jamie laing, jessica knappett, sara barron, kerry godliman, fatiha el-ghorri, ivo graham, get william hanson on there why not
🚨 danny dyer, susie dent, catherine tate, alan carr 🚨 HANDS DOWN!!!
don't you think this format would be perfect for chris addison to come back into our panel show lives
and omg mark watson because remember when guy was having a lil go at him 😭😭💀💀💀
CUZ THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT guy is the host and he needs to think the guests are funny... hmm who would have a hilarious dynamic with guy...well...everyone😁 guy is the best😁
it makes sense, too, that some of the funniest dynamics on a format like cats does countdown would work on guy mont spelling bee, since it's all about being a lil smarty — so russell howard and roisin on the same panel would be great because she does her best and he takes the piss out of her. people who take the piss out of each other...hmm...fatiha el-ghorri and phil wang lmfao...alan carr and romesh one of my underrated faves...frankie boyle and miles jupp would be so good omg
I SHOULD STOP NOW hehehe sorry for the block of text i answered this stream of consciousness i hope you don't mind heheheheh
what about you??
aww what a cute question 🥰 honestly i do associate it with autumn because it often comes out in september/october (so i think of it as part of the fall tv schedule)! but, really, i associate different series with different seasons? like i think of s7 as being winter time because kerry made that big circle in the snow hahaha that kind of thing! it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people think of taskmaster + summer tho?
omg i love map men they're so funny
thanks for taking the time to send in these other recs i'll check them out 🥹🫶 posting these for everyone else to enjoy too!!!
i haven't seen either yet!!! how are they? they're both on my drive waiting for me to watch them 🥹 i might watch ahir's tonight
sorry anon i don't, only the epub version is easily available 😞 maybe someone reading this will be able to help out?
someone sent it over!! i added it to the drive :)<3
hello anon yes! i threw it in the alex horne collection folder here it is :)
hello! you're not the first person to ask me this but i really don't think you can! as far as i know there is no proshot, it was never streamed in cinemas, never streamed online... someone can correct me if i'm wrong but :(
i think we just missed seeing it at the actual theatre (▱˘︹˘▱)

Under the direction of Nicolas Ménard, Nexus Studios presents this epic stop-motion film takes viewers on a journey through 90 years of the intertwined history of Mexico and iconic beer Corona. Narrated by actor and producer Gael García Bernal and inspired by the art of Pedro Friedeberg, our studio team worked with Andy Gent’s team at Arch Model Studio to design, create and animate a cast of 71 miniature characters, 8 beautifully detailed sets and 350 individually made miniature glass bottles.
From post-revolution Mexico and the birth of Corona, the film leads us through the country’s Golden Age of Cinema and Peso Crisis to see Corona’s international growth, before we arrive in modern day Mexico.
