Aardman Animations - Overview and History of the Studios PART 1

Aardman's adeptness at engaging audiences with compelling stories told through animation has earned the company a deserved worldwide reputation. Its award-winning work produces a unique brand of independent film alongside work for broadcast and advertising spots. The studio has had seven Oscar nominations and has won four.

Peter Lord and David Sproxton began their animating partnership at school and created a short animated sketch called ‘Aardman’ while they were still teenagers.

Later, BBC purchased 'Aardman' for their Vision On series.

Peter and David continued to supply material for Vision On while they were at university.

1972 - 1989

After receiving their first cheque from the BBC, Peter and David needed a name for their bank account and in 1972, they registered the name Aardman Animations.

After graduating in 1976, They moved to Bristol to make a serious go of animation as a full-time career and produced their first professional production, creating Morph for the children’s programme 'Take Hart'.

From the start, Peter and David were interested in developing an adult audience for model animation. Conversation Pieces commissioned by Channel Four Television in 1982 enabled the pair to develop its innovative technique of animating puppet characters to real-life conversations.

With films like Early Bird (set in a local radio station) Aardman demonstrated that real people could be characterised with insight, humour and sensitivity.

The duo met Nick Park at the National Film and Television School when he was working on his student film A Grand Day Out. He joined Aardman full-time in 1985.

Peter Gabriel invited Aardman to collaborate with director Stephen Johnson and the Brothers Quay on a rock music video. The result, Sledgehammer, won numerous awards that year.

That original combination of rhythm, energy, style and visual flair was also harnessed to provide the visual accompaniment to the late Nina Simone's My Baby Just Cares For Me and Robert Parker's Barefootin'.

Mayor Unita Zelma Blackwell or U. Z. Brown (March 18, 1933 – May 13, 2019) was a civil rights activist who was the first African-American woman to be elected mayor in the state of Mississippi. She was a project director for the SNCC and helped organize voter drives for African Americans across Mississippi. She was a founder of the US–China Peoples Friendship Association, a group dedicated to promoting cultural exchange between the US and China. She served as an advisor to 6 US Presidents: Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton.

She was born in Lula, Mississippi, to sharecroppers Virda Mae and Willie Brown. When her teacher told her that she needed “a real name, not just initials”. She and her teacher decided on Unita Zelma.

Her family traveled in search of work. She was 14 when she finished the eighth grade, the final year of school at Westside, a school in West Helena for Black children. She had to quit school to earn for her family.

She married Jeremiah Blackwell, a cook for the Army Corps of Engineers. They had one son. After settling in Mayersville, she began to get involved in the Civil Rights Movement. She married Willie Wright.

She was elected mayor of Mayersville, Mississippi (1976-2001). She gained national attention by traveling across the country to promote the construction of low-income housing. She served on the DNC and as co-chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party. She went to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and received an MA in Regional Planning. She helped found Mississippi Action for Community Education. She was president of the National Conference of Black Mayors. She co-founded the Black Women Mayors’ and served as its first president.

She wrote an autobiography, Barefootin’: Life Lessons from the Road to Freedom. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #womenhistorymonth
