Barduil Month Sneak-Peek 👀

I’m super excited to share some snippets of the Vampire AU @scary-grace​ and I have been working on! We’ll be posting the first part of it for Day 1 of Barduil Month but for now here’s some snippets from the first chapter! 💖💖💖

Being turned into a vampire had shocked Thranduil for a number of reasons.

First, he had to grapple with the fact that vampires are real. He had always loved the aesthetic of a classy Dracula, capes and collars and the allure of danger, but knowing that monsters were real and feasted on human flesh and blood did a number to his psyche.

Second, that his Tinder date’s bio which read ‘I hope you’re my type.’ was referring to his blood type. Was it too late to track him down and tell him it was a bit on the nose?

He hadn’t known the man more than 15 minutes, did he like what he saw or was he just feeling impatient? Thranduil would never know, what he did know was that being left for dead in an alley downtown was not the way he wanted to go. He had his son Legolas, and he’d fight tooth and nail to get back to him. The boy had already had to suffer through the heartbreak of losing his mother, how could he lose his father too?

That’s what Thranduil was thinking as his heart stopped.

“What’s that?”

Bard flipped his phone over and jammed it back into his pocket, getting just enough of a look at the screen before he did it to see that there was absolutely nothing on the scanner. So it was malfunctioning. Great. “Did anyone ever tell you it was rude to read over people’s shoulders?”

“That looked like an infrared scanner,” the newcomer said, and Bard got his first good look at him. “What could you possibly need that for?”

“None of your business,” Bard’s mouth said, but his eyes were stuck, roving over the stranger and cataloguing every bizarre detail. The more he saw, the weirder it got.

The stranger had long blond hair and a pretty, pale face. His eyes were bright blue. That part was  normal. San Francisco’s a big city, and big cities have pretty people in them. It was his outfit that was weird – a frilly white shirt and black slacks and boots, and a cape with a high collar. There were rings on almost all his fingers, and when he lifted a hand to tuck his hair behind his ear, Bard saw that his nails were unusually long. His ears were unusually pointed, too.

It looked like he was wearing a vampire costume. A really stereotypical vampire costume, designed to stand out. “Are you trying out a costume? Halloween’s not for another two months.”

day 2 of @bi-widower-dads‘s barduil month: fairytale AU! ...sort of

this is actually a reprisal of an AU from back in 2015--barduil grad students au, in which bard and thranduil are graduate students in biology! funnily enough, i started that au when i was still an undergrad, so seeing the past portions (linked below) as a current grad student now is... hilarious and wildly inaccurate. so this is an ‘update’ on that au, with my current four years and counting of graduate school!

in this case, bard and thranduil coordinated for their departmental halloween party--with costumes based on little red riding hood. bard definitely stole the fangs and cloak from a vampire costume, though.

A few months ago I read In The Woods Somewhere by Ias on ao3 and it was amazing!! 

Summary: Bard is a mechanic and Thranduil is a centuries old vampire that decides he wants to kill him. 

JESUS CHRIST this fic is SO GOOD!!! It’s story line is beautifully crafted and along with being haunting and dark and mysterious, its amazingly written and a true masterpiece of a fic. I would not recommend it as an introduction to the barduil ship because it gets really intense at times but it honestly has changed the way I look at creating writing and it is such a fantastic experience and I could honestly talk about it for ever.

Fanfictions and Me!

I come from a family of regular readers, and since I fell into this fanfiction hole when I was only 11 years old, I have never been able to get out of it! I've been through several fandoms over the years and lost count of how many stories I've read. For the past 2 years, I've been focusing a lot on the D:BH fandom, but every now and then I revisit some old fandoms when I miss them

So, here is a short list of some wonderful stories that I have read over the years. Will you end up getting interested too? There are many talented authors out there :)

P.S: On another occasion, I will make a list with only fanfictions of "Detroit: Become Human". I've been stuck in this fandom for 2 fucking years! I believe it deserves a list for itself hahaha

For lovers of good vampire stories, this is an excellent choice for you! An AU from “The Hobbit” universe, focused on one of my favorite ships in “The Lord of the Rings” world, Barduil (Bard/Thranduil), In The Woods Somewhere is a tense and intense story. But if you're expecting a story like “Twilight”, well... my friend... you're in the wrong place.

That was one of the first stories I read on Archive (AO3), well before I thought about creating an account there. At that time, I read fanfics only on national sites (yes, I am Brazilian), and I ended up being incredibly frustrated by not finding stories with my favorite characters. You know, here people tend to write only about what is REALLY popular.

Ah yes ... Then came the period of obsession with "Hannibal", that wonderful series! I spent almost two years of high school hanging from that fandom, and that's when I finally gave credit to the infamous A/B/O. Oh gods ... how I love this shit! haha

Focused on our beloved Murder Husbands, Been A Son is by far one of the best fanfics I have read to date, it has a lot of that madness that only "Hannibal" has, that ability to leave you intrigued, uncomfortable and full I want to know how the hell this story is going to end! P.S: This fanfic has a sequel called They Can Smell Your Intentions, which is equally incredible.

Annihilation has a simple plot, but it leaves you wondering what the hell is wrong with this empty world all the time! And that’s what fascinates me. And the relationship of the two characters ... And recently, after 2 long years of separation, I was revisiting this incredible fandom, and while searching the magic well of fanfics looking for something that could warm my heart a little after finally watching Season 3 (yes, I know ... I am very late)... I came across this masterpiece.

CODA has everything a good story could ask for: music, drama, characters waltzing around feelings they don't quite understand, cute moments, moments that make your eyes watery... and on top of that it's set in the 80's! Oh my god, I'm in love <3

aa well okay truth is that i learn kpop choreography even though i'm not super into kpop anymore (never been in the fandom just like some of the music) cos they're easy to find tutorials too and its a decent bit of cardio, but i have to do it with the curtains closed. and im sure its like,,, old comments from my mum in my brain. but i know even if i look terrible when i dance it doesn't matter because i'm on my own in my room just doing it for fun and to stay a bit fitter.

Ohhh, at the moment I'm really into Hogan's Heroes!

Avatar: The Last Airbender has been a favourite ever since I saw all 3 seasons on TV as a kid/teen. Cat Scratch is another big favourite from back in the day! (I used to stay up all night to watch TV and sometimes I'd catch episodes of Cat Scratch at 9pm and the re-runs at 5am before school lol)

All time favourite movie: The Road to El Dorado! I still remember the day my mother took me to burger king to get the toys (I had Miguel, Altivo and Tzekel Kan lol). I used to annoy my parents to rent the dvd at the local video rental store on the regular until they got fed up and bought me a dvd of my own :') And I still know all the songs by heart!

I'm also really soft for Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and Coraline! And a handful of Ghibli movies (The Cat Returns, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service), Shrek, Madagascar, Emperor's New Groove and Mary Poppins used to be on regular dvd player rotation for years as well lol

In terms of movies with real actors, I have a small collection of Spaghetti Western movies (most of them with Lee Van Cleef because Revolver Ocelot is based on him lol) which are really comforting to me because nice memories and nice memes with nice people :') Sabata and Beyond The Law are my favourites!

Mad Max: Fury Road is also very cool, really aesthetic. Love the cinnamon tography 👌

Oh and not to forget: Codename UNCLE and What We Do In The Shadows!

I feel really bad about it, but lately I've not felt up to reading as much as I did a few years ago... So most of my favourite books are from my childhood and teen years lol

Shiloh, the Inkheart series and a few select Goosebumps books are what I devoured in just a few reading sessions in the middle of the night as a kid. The Indiana Jones novels were also subjected to the same treatment lol

A few more "recent" favourites are: The Hobbit, a few select Sherlock Holmes stories, Frankenstein, a gay parody of Sherlock Holmes I got for my 17th birthday (Hemlock Bones: A Stud In Scarlet by Sarah Masters), and a historical gay mystery/romance novel I found at a random grocery store (Think of England by K. J. Charles)

Do fanfics count as books? Because I got two favourites in that category that could very well count as books because of their length and depth and level of emotion and action. First one is: Season of Light and Shadow by eldritchmage on AO3, 160 chapters of Modern AU Barduil goodness which got me through one of my toughest years) And the second one I'm in the process of catching up with and finishing: Men of Honor (109 chapters of Hogan's Heroes fanfic with a Klink x Hogan flavour and some serious historical parts concerning the last few months of life and war in Germany before the surrender to the Allies.)

And I'm extremely fond of two stories a dear friend has written over the past few years:

Blutige Anfänger (literally "Bloody Beginners"), an entertaining and thrilling story about Count Dracula being woken up in modern times and having to face a new very strict and bureaucratic vampire society (typically german lol) alongside a recently turned college student who would rather be back on twitter than deal with all this mess lol (best thing is that parts of the story play in a city that I know well and in areas that I have fond memories of!!!)

And Hyding Adam, a story that started as a Frankenstein/Jekyll+Hyde crossover and turned into something absolutely beautiful ahhh I still get all teary-eyed just thinking about it! (I'm even responsible for one song on the matching Hyding Adam mood playlist!!!)

There's probably loads of movies, series and books I can't think of right now but this will do for now lol

For 'show a little faith', Thunder Road is the obvious choice (since that's where the title comes from). There's also Winter Song by Sara Bareilles, which, although I pulled out the lyrics from the chapter, is the song Thranduil sings to Bard in Chapter 11. Finally, If We Were Vampires by Chester See -- that's probably my classic Barduil song, and imagining Bard singing this one reliably breaks my heart.

9. Do you write every day? If you wrote today, share a sentence of what you’ve written!

I do write every day, at least a little bit! Today I was working on the 'seeking a friend' anniversary fic. One sentence from that:

The fact that the children’s plan to keep Thranduil from being discovered involves dressing him up in very convincing drag would simply be the icing on a terrible cake, but it is not just drag: It is a performance – the performance of Thranduil’s life, or they will not survive this – as Bard Bowman’s wife, and the mother of their faux family’s five children.

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

For Kairos, I learned a lot about everything that was happening in 1977! But for my most recent non-barduil project, typically tagged as 'adoption fic', I've been building on my semi-extensive knowledge of the alternative childcare system in the United States and learning about systems around the world. It's been interesting, if somewhat depressing.

19. Give us a small teaser from one of your WIPs.

From a barduil month prompt I didn't come even close to finishing in time:

Some part of Legolas cringes from the idea of reading postcards his dad got from somebody, but he gets over it fast. Fast enough to realize that this isn’t something he should be reading at all.

22. Do you know how your fic will end before you start writing?

Yes! Almost always. I usually have the ending in mind when I get started, and it usually doesn't change much. Everything that happens between the beginning and the ending is subject to change, though!

Im not criticizing necessarily but is there a reason in particular that all the hobbit fics on ao3 are all self-inserts/OCs? I stopped checking the tag like.... Probably a few years ago when literally everything being posted was either barduil or was hidden from me for inc*st crimes by ao3rder (and there is still a lot of that but strangely [""""strangely"""] not as much durinc*st and more legolas/thranduil and im like........ Baffled and more weired out than ever tbh) but ANYWAY now i go and look and its like.... Legit all Character/Reader fics and i think it's fascinating bc ive never seen that happen to a fandom before. And it reminds me of a post a saw a while ago about how fandoms develop a particular trope or AU that seems to proliferate that fandom like vampire AUs and now it seems like hobbit fandom has been taking over by CharxReader fics and im kind of fascinated cant lie.

Barduil Secret Santa - The Vampire at the Edge of the Woods 

Merry Christmas @sharalock-holmes. I'm your Secret Santa stand-in and I come bearing a gift for you.

Bard was terrified, thought Thranduil, and he had every right to be. The vampire appeared from nowhere grabbing Bard by the arm with it's bony fingers taking both fabric and flesh in the same swift motion. They were every bit the last visages of the people they once were, surfacing like a memory from around the bend. Raising like ghosts better forgotten from their graves. He'd pulled back and let loose an arrow into one of the vampires eyes before Thranduil had a chance to turn from the tiny blue mushrooms whose virtues he'd been absorbed in describing to Bard only a second ago. A second swipe and his bow was broken and he was backing away quickly, holding his arm, terror in his eyes. Thranduil had his sword draw now, and managed one good slice to the side of the vampire before the it was on top of him, forcing him backwards into the bush and Bard back with him. The vampire slain, decapitated and then stabbed in the heart for good measure. Thranduil would have it burned and the ashes scattered after. Thranduil turned his attention now to his husband, trying to remain calm. Now that the fight was over it was difficult. He hadn't expected a vampire. Spiders and Orcs sure. They hadn't gone on this walk unarmed because in his woods there didn't lurk all sorts of monstrosities. Bard had even joked about a hunt, and the practicality of eating giant spiders. But vampires, vampires he hadn't encountered in any living mortals memory. He'd never even mentioned them to Bard. If he'd only ever heard legends of them, he preferred that remain the case. Bard had accepted the dangers of his forest home, and hadn't held it against him, but he didn't need to burden him with the knowledge of creatures Thranduil never thought even he in his long life would ever have to face again. Now his woods had attracted a vampire. again. And they would likely be attracting more soon enough. "You're fine," Thranduil told him, trying unsuccessfully not to show the dread he felt raising in his heart. No more walks with Bard in the woods. His woods. Not now that those things were back. "There's a poultice for that" Thranduil assured, inspecting Bard arm "It's not that deep either, you'll be fine." Bard wasn't looking at him, instead he jerked his chin at the crumpled heap that had dealt that damage to him. "I've not seen another in a while." "A vampire? You've seen vampires?" Thranduil asked quickly "Where? When? By the Lake?" "What?" Bard looked back at him in surprised, blinking. Shock maybe? Thought Thranduil, he should hurry him back to the castle. "Oh vampires. Yes. Not here though. Not recently "Bard said evenly, assuringly, "Not for an age." Thranduil nodded. Of course. While he hadn't expected Bard to even know that vampires were real, but he was pleased that he would have to explain what they had just encountered to him, right after it had harmed him so. It was only later after Bard had gone to sleep, mortals always sleeping half their lives away, arm wrapped up that he thought about how Bard wasn't afraid of the vampire after it was surely dispatched. He wasn't afraid that it had it had got its claws into him, the most common ways that people became Vampires themselves. Usually men, occasionally Dwarves and rarely Elves. They all think they luckily managed to survive being torn to pieces, the most common result of a vampire attack on unsuspecting untrained people, only to find that some of the vampire own blood had tainted their wounds, corrupting them from within. A corruption that causes them to forget themselves and become the blood-thirsty animals all vampires become. A plague upon the land and her people coming from what was once their very own neighbours. Bard hadn't been afraid of that all, hadn't even voiced that concern. He allowed him to take him back home and have the healers give him the medicine he would need to avoid corruption should some of their attacks blood had mixed with him, all while voicing questions about the history of vampires in his woodland kingdom. If they were common? When was the last time anyone had seen one? Would Thranduil be able to comb the woods to flesh out any others that might be there? Thranduil indulged him, thinking it was only him trying to protect him. Not voicing the concern that was on both their minds. But maybe it was only on his. The thought that Bard was afraid that he could become a vampire like that which had attacked him, didn't seem to trouble Bard at all, but he had been terrified when the vampire had first appeared. Thranduil was sure of it, sure it wasn't only for the surprise of it. He had been scared of that vampire but he hadn't been afraid of becoming a vampire. Hadn't even been afraid that Thranduil himself could have been corrupted, and Bard had been concerned to find that he enjoyed walking barefoot sometimes in the woods. Thranduil resolved to ask him about it later, in the morning or the next day perhaps but then dismissed the thought. It was silly anyway. Bard was alright, and it didn't particularly matter why he was more afraid of the appearance of the vampire then the idea he'd come so close to becoming. He was worrying over nothing.
