Since July is the Disability Pride Month and the Barbie Movie Month, here's my collection of Barbie dolls with disabilities.

Mattel has been adding disability representation to their doll series since 2019. So far we've had at least 6 Barbie dolls in wheelchairs, along with 2 Kens and 2 Chelsea dolls (little kid sized dolls).

There are 4 Barbie dolls and 1 Ken with prosthetic legs.

There's a doll with hearing aids, and a doll with Down Syndrome designed in association with National Down Syndrome Society.

There are also dolls with conditions like Alopecia and Vitiglio.

Mostly they come out in the Fashionistas line, but sometimes they also crop up in other thematic series, like "You can be anything", and so we had a Para-alpine skiier and an Interior Designer with a prosthetic leg.

There's also a doll honoring Helen Keller from "the Inspiring Women" series.

And in the clips from the "Barbie" movie, you can spot a Barbie in the wheelchair dancing along with others at Barbie's party.

Ranking and Reviewing Every Pregnant Steffi Love Doll (1992-2024) 🤰🏼

1992 - Newborn Baby/Twins

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find much information on these dolls' origins, aside from a few secondhand listings online. As far as I can tell, the body mold (and subsequently the very first pregnant Steffi Love) was created in 1992, and the rest above followed shortly after.

Overall, I give these six 7.5/10. At first glance the outfits are relatively simple, but I think they carry that late 80s/early 90s charm. As for each individually:

NBB: Navy Suit w/ Hat: 8.5/10 A standout look compared to the dresses most common for pregnant Steffi Love dolls. Points for being unique

NBT: Blue Floral Dress: 8/10 The flowers remind me of watercolors, and the pastel pink flower ties the colors all together.

NBT: Pastel Floral Dress w/ Pants: 7.75/10 Kinda reminds me of pajamas

NBT: Blue Polka Dot Dress: 7.5/10 A decent look in theory, but the silver pants make it look cheap. White ones would have paired better with the dress

NBB: Multicolored Floral Dress: 7/10 Too much going on compared to the blue florals, though fun fact this one is mistaken for Pregnant Midge in a lot of those "TOP 10 DISCONTINUED BARBIES" articles

NBB: Pink Floral Dress: 6/10 The cheapest-looking out of the six, I think I've seen that exact fabric used on a Barbie Fashionista skirt

2006 - Welcome Baby

It seems a new body mold was made for these that would be re-used in future releases, though in 2019 the arms would be switched out. The variants available, unlike, the 1992 releases, were Caucasian and Black (coming with either straight hair or an afro). The initial release came with the darker pants, face mold, and middle part seen on the left, but later releases would use the face mold and side part seen today with lighter pants.

Overall, a 10/10. I honestly love the y2k vibes coming from this look, and like the vintage Navy Suit doll it's a welcome departure from her usual maternity clothes. I think the left's darker pants work with the outfit a bit better, but I prefer the right's face mold.

There's also this variant with a pink polka dot dress (although I'm not sure when she was released) that I would honestly consider a completely different doll if it weren't for the title.

Unlike the previous, she's a 6/10. Her look is nothing special, and especially disappointing compared to the other variants of this line. I like that they used a different hairstyle, but she's just so... plain.

2011 - Happy Family

Little information exists regarding this playset, especially considering a modern remake uses the same name. This does seem to be the first pregnant Steffi release to include both her boyfriend "Kevin" (🙄) and her little sister Evi Love.

Overall, 7/10. It's a fairly decent look that I have no particularly strong feelings towards.

2015 - Happy Family

Seems to be a reproduction of the original 2011 playset with updated looks. Steffi and Kevin are using different face molds, but it includes the same accessories as the previous and next Happy Family playsets.

Overall though, 7.5/10! I like the pink pattern on Steffi with the solid color miniskirt, and it's so cute that Evi has a matching outfit!

2019 - Welcome Surprise

I think this is the first instance of Simba using their most recent arm mold for their pregnant dolls. I can't remember how big Gender Reveals were during 2018-2019, but apparently they were big enough for Steffi to want a piece of that pie, confetti cannon and all.

Overall rank when putting aside the gimmick, 6/10. While I admire the coherence in theming with using light blues and pinks with a confetti motif in the skirt, the top makes the outfit look somewhat juvenile.

??? - Sweet Expectations

This one might have the LEAST info available on it. I'm guessing by the arms that this was likely released as a budget alternative when that arm mold was first being used, so it was probably released from some point around 2019 onward. Not sure why the box says "Baby Arrival" when the name of the doll is completely different tbh

Overall, 5/10. Just a worse version of the polka-dot Welcome Baby variant. The dress looks like it’s made from wrapping paper.

2021 - Happy Family

The most recent Happy Family playset, and yet again Kevin's got another facelift. He's becoming yassified.

Overall, 6/10. Ngl just a more boring execution of the original version.

2021 - Welcome Twins

And here we enter the Pregnant Steffi Love renaissance! I'm not entirely sure why we get so many releases in 2021-2022, but my guess is Welcome Surprise sold better than they were expecting in 2020 so they probably started making all of these shortly after.

Overall, 6.5/10. I'm not really feeling the colors or pattern, and we'll see a better rendition of this outfit with the Newborn Baby set in 2022.

2021 - Royal Baby

This playset actually has a brunette & brown-eyed variant that marks one of the only other times the hispanic(?) Steffi from the XOXO Friends line appears (ngl I should make a post about that line sometime as well).

Anyway, overall I give her an 8/10! While I would have personally given her puffed sleeves, I admire the overall aesthetic! Between this and the upcoming Mermaid Family, I also like how they're the only company making pregnant fantasy dolls.

2021 - Mermaid Family

Here it is! If you've heard of any pregnant Steffi Love dolls, it's probably this one. Here we see Kevin's third facelift, and his most yassified mug yet. So many jokes I could make about his face I can't even list them all here.

Overall, 9/10. The concept alone sells this through sheer absurdity. I love that Steffi has a tattoo on her baby bump, and that this apparently confirms mermaids are a species of mammal. Even if I'm not entirely certain I'd buy this (just because of the space it'd take up), I respect the hell out of it.

2022 - Baby Surprise

Fun fact, this one is currently the only pregnant Steffi Love I've been able to find in my area. As seen above, she comes in three variants: white & lavender dress with side pony, red & pink dress with side part, and rainbow dress with high pony. She comes with 9-18 accessories (toys, pacifier, etc.), and the surprise element is that she could be having a boy (9 blue accessories), a girl (9 pink accessories), two boys, two girls, or a boy and a girl (9 of each color).

Overall, 5.5/10. The stock photos don’t get across how metallic the material for these dresses look in-person. And the ruffles at the sleeves remind me way too much of the Barbie Fashionistas for my liking.

2022 - Newborn Baby

This one has a similar outfit to the Welcome Twins playset, and is the only pregnant Steffi love to have articulation. She comes with a baby carrier, and when you press her necklace it makes the sound of a baby crying.

Overall, 7/10. I like the colors and pattern much more here than the Welcome Twins set. Even though it isn't spectacular, the accessories are cute and its central concept is well-executed.

2022 - Newborn Baby Room

And here we have the most recent pregnant doll released. My guess is the 2021-2022 batch didn't sell as well as they had hoped, so they've slowed down since then. But I doubt that'll keep them from making use of the body mold more in the future.

Overall, 7/10. At first glance the materials used for this dress looked very cheap, but it sorta grew on me the more I looked at it? It reminds me of a cupcake. However, I’d never have the room for the playset, and the doll itself is still relatively plain.

Even if a lot of these dolls were just decent, I still gotta give props to Steffi. There's only ever been one pregnant doll released under the Barbie umbrella, and that was for a side character ONCE. Steffi meanwhile may as well have being pregnant as a personality trait! Hopefully Simba makes more dolls like this soon, because I'd love to see what concept they might come up with next!

near death experience… for  as  long  as  marielle  can  remember,   she’s  always  been  something  of  a  natural  performer.   a  precocious,   outgoing  girl  who  saw  the  world  as  her  stage,   just  as  the  great  bard  once  said.   her  mother  recognised  this  emerging  talent  early  on  and  set  about  utilising  it  as  soon  as  she  could.   mari’s  little  face  was  to  become  a  regular  sight  amongst  advertisement  campaigns  and  bit  parts  on  network  television  shows.   she  worked  steadily  throughout  her  childhood,   attending  performing  arts  school  and  eventually,   graduating  from  drama  school  at  twenty  two.   despite  her  wealth  of  girlhood  experience  in  the  industry  however,   marielle  didn’t  have  much  luck  with  auditions  post-college.   already,   there  was  an  image  she  was  having  difficulty  shedding  but  the  stars  eventually  aligned  when  she  was  hired  to  work  at  a  famous  entertainment  resort  complex  in  orlando.   mari  was  a  character  performer  there  for  three  years,   playing  iconic  princesses  and  mermaids  and  fairies  alike  day  in  and  day  out  and  entertaining  children  endlessly  as  she  did  so.   it  wasn’t  the  best  job  by  any  means,   fending  off  leering  fathers  became  a  pastime  and  her  mother’s  disdain  for  it  all  was  more  than  evident  but  it  paid  the  bills  and  she  was  getting  to  do  what  she  loved…

so,   she  always  persevered.   one  job  she’d  occasionally  perform  was  that  of  the  fairy  during  the  evening  firework  display  the  resort  would  put  on  each  day  in  their  main  park.   it  was  absurd  and  unnerving  and  involved  being  launched  across  a  zip  line  atop  the  park  for  all  the  patrons  to  see  but  it  did  come  with  a  substantial  bonus  so,   who  was  mari  to  turn  it  down?   the  day  was  like  any  other  when  marielle’s  near  death  occurred.   she’d  climbed  to  the  top  of  the  castle  with  her  supervisor,   dressed  in  a  green  mini-dress  and  blonde  wig,   ready  to  make  some  “magic”  before  being  sent  across  the  zip  line  as  usual.   fireworks  burst  into  colour  behind  her,   the  audience  wholly  mesmerised  by  the  display  until  that  adoration  swiftly  turned  to  abject  terror  as  they  watched  in  horror  as  the  fairy  fell  from  her  harness  mid  flight.

the  thing  had  fucking  snapped!   was  all  mari  could  really  string  together  in  terms  of  coherent  thought  as  she  plummeted  to  the  ground,   LED  wings  and  all.   that  and  the  likelihood  of  her  very  imminent  death.   the  bright,   colourful  world  she’d  come  to  know  immediately  fading  to  black  upon  impact  with  the  ground.   ambulances  were  called  soon  thereafter,   just  as  clips  of  what  had  happened  began  circulating  online.   the  entertainment  company  tried  to  subdue  the  coverage  and  bury  the  lede  but  sure  enough,   news  of  actor,   marielle  chettiar  and  the  extensive  injuries  she’d  suffered  under  their  employ  broke  that  very  night  and  nothing  was  to  be  the  same  again.

power… she  used  to  dress  as  a  fairy  for  work  so,   she  became  a  fairy!   sorta.   marielle  possesses  the  unique  ability  to  transform  into  and  subsequently,   access  the  traits  of  a  fairy.   through  a  sparkling  transformation  (   which  used  to  be  triggered  by  a  vocal  command  but  can  now  be  performed  non-verbally   ),   she  shifts  into  her  “supersuit”  and  grows  a  set  of  beautiful  butterfly-esque  wings  which  allow  her  to  fly  with  great  manoeuvrability  and  at  enhanced  speeds.   this  glamorous  transformation  also  grants  her  the  ability  to  produce  fairy  dust,   which  possesses  hallucinogenic  qualities  when  it’s inhaled  or  comes  into  contact  with  skin.   through  her  work  as  an  agent,   she’s  learnt  she  has  an  innate  magical  aptitude  and  often  tests  the  effectiveness  of  her  ability  by  honing  her  hand-to-hand and close  combat  skills  too.

drawbacks / vulnerabilities… when  hit  or  overwhelmed  and  overexerting,   marielle’s  found  she’s  prone  to  detransformation.   which  effectively  powers  her  down  completely  and  often  puts  her  at  great  risk  of  suffering  similar  falls  to  the  one  that  gave  her  the  power  in  the  first  place.   they’re  not  easy  to  recover  from  either,   requiring  a  period  of  rest  and  rejuvenation  before  she’s  able  to  fully transform  into  a  fairy  again.

cerberus corp… in  the  wake  of  a  landmark  workplace  injury  lawsuit  against  the  entertainment  company,   marielle  amassed  a  large  and  very  dedicated  following.   the  proceedings  were  all  public  and  these  fans  saw  what  had  happened  to  her  as  an  injustice,   backing  her  at  every  turn  when  it  came  to  righting  that  immense  wrong.   including  her  new  career  ventures,   which  had  now  expanded  to  modelling  —  wherein  she  debuted  her  fairy  form  to  the  world  and  incidentally  captivated  the  hearts  of  children  all  across  the  globe.   hers  was  a  story  dubbed  “the  american  fairytale”,   a  pr  dream  and  before  she’d  had  time  to  process  it  all,   who  should  knock  on  her  door  but  elena  navarro  herself.   cerberus  corporation  were  interested  in  recruiting  her  and  with  her  aspirations  higher  than  ever  before,   mari  was  quick  to  accept  the  offer.

she’s  been  with  cerberus  corp  for  four  years  now,   since  2019  and  whilst  she’ll  convey  that  it’s  all  been  smooth  sailing…   it  hasn’t  really.   outwardly,   marielle  is  everything  an  agent  should  be.   singularly  dedicated  to  the  cause,   with  her  eye  ultimately  set  on  becoming  a  level  i.   but  she  and  the  corporation’s  pr  team  clash  more  often  than  mari  would  like  to  admit  and  it  all  comes  back  to  that  child-friendly  image  of  hers.   the  one  she  can’t  shed.   because  despite  being  a  woman  grown  with  all  the  adult  needs  and  interests  that  come  with  it,   her  past  and  fantastical  ability  mean  she’s  a  huge  draw  for  the  younger  demographic  of  eo  fans  and  the  corporation  have  stayed  firm  in  their  position  of  not  wanting  that  to  change.   it  leads  marielle  to  act  out  on  missions.   she  plays  fast  and  loose,   living  up  to  her  codename  and  doing  as  she  pleases   (   within  the  confines  of  what’s  been  asked  of  her   ).   she’s  caught  between  a  rock  and  a  hard  place.   perpetually  wanting  to  progress  higher  but  not  at  the  cost  of  who  she  is.

codename… given  that  her  ability  is  so…   self-explanatory,   faerie  was  something  that  came  to  mari  early  on  and  it  caught  on  quick.   of  course,   people  still  spell  and  say  it  as “fairy”  as  well  as  calling  her  by a  spluttering  of  fairy  names  from  pop  culture  but  it’s  faerie  and  she  will  correct  you  if  you  get  it  wrong.   do  shorten  it  to  “fae”  if  you  like  though.   she  doesn’t  mind  that.

this is (literally) my peaches n cream !! i had a hard time picking my fav 80s girl…. but this one sums it up! she shows the elegance and glamour of the 80s with the sheer quality that the 80s had….. plus the classic white holographic material they had! she’s just……. a classic

so many fun ones!! but i had to choose songbird barbie…. she was the barbie that started off my whole obsession too!!! i found her at the thrift in 2019 and searched HARD to ID her…. which made me gain a lot of knowledge in barbie and I soon started collecting them little by little and uhhhh well yknow - the 90s had a LOT to offer for barbie at the time, but this one definitely represents the glittery and innocent side of barbie that was played from 90-98!

2000s

the sugar plum princess! now…. the 2000s was def the movie era for barbie and she was well represented in her early movies. the nutcracker movie is my favorite out of them all! plus i was given her as a gift and i fell in love, when i originally was trying to avoid the movies! but oh well, i love her

the glam swappin styles fashionista from 2011! this was the line from my childhood, i was given the sporty swappin style girl as a gift in 2010 and i still have her! but barbie glam is where my heart lies now…. my actual fav glam fashionista is from 2009 but i didn’t feel like cheating LOL - she’s so epic!!!

13 Wishes Lagoona. I’d say all of these are missing an accessory or two, but this one’s the only one with accessories from a different doll - she’s got 13 Wishes Frankie’s shoes. She’s missing her leg fins but apart from that everyone has all their body parts, which is nice.

some Disney Store Ariel. She was butt-asss nekkid with zero accessories so I’m not entirely sure which one, but I think it’s either this one with a ring accessory or this one with Flounder. I’m not sure if those dolls are even different or if they’re the same thing with different clothes

Then there’s a 2014 Barbie head I can’t identify on a Barbie Fashionista #105 body. This head has straight pigtails instead of the original curls which is a crying shame, I’m absolutely gonna have to try to give her new hair. Her face looks vaguely familiar but I’ve had no luck finding what it’s from; it might not even be a Barbie for all I know but it does say Mattel on the back. if anyone recognizes it please lmk or I may have to turn to Reddit

Bye bye, Barn Buddies Eva!

When I dealt with my mother's collection of roughly 1000 dolls, I did a final weed-down of dolls I was keeping (some from my own much smaller collection). The "final" result was 19 fashion dolls of characters with canonical ages from late childhood to adulthood, plus a few 4" small girls. And the deal was that while 20 was not a firm limit, it's a good estimate on how many dolls I'm able to manage happily, so anyone coming in means evaluating whether someone should go out.

Well. I bought two fashion dolls at Family Dollar last week, both of them massively on-target for my interests. (These will be unboxed in a later post.) These are the first dolls I've bought since late 2019, so it's not like I'm bingeing, but it meant someone marginal needs to go.

When I'd done the final cut, I'd thought "wow, a 1:9 articulated doll, I remember when ToyBoxPhilosopher featured a couple and they seemed so cool." My mother was obsessed by TBP and kind of hated her by the time TBP took her break from blogging, so of course when TBP talked about this size, Mom had to buy one (probably around 2017).

Having a ton of points of articulation in a 1:9 doll is genuinely cool. In the late 2010s, there was a period after the first enthusiasm for Barbie Fashionista and before the introduction of Made to Move Barbie when getting articulation in a fashion doll meant you were either (a) collecting Monster High [which was at its peak of cleverness and popularity] or (b) going on a treasure hunt for wild and varied alternatives.

This doll has extraordinary amounts of articulation, especially for her size. She's got wrists and ankles! She's got thigh rotation!

As a result, she can not only sort of touch her head, as the top pic shows: she can sit and kneel with stability.

At this point, I was still assuming she was a Breyer riding doll, because I remembered TBP reviewing the "Let's Go Riding Western" set in 2014. But no! There was, around the same time, a review of Paradise Horse's "Barn Buddies," and that's what Mom bought.

That makes a substantial difference in resale value, as there's a secondary market for Breyer riding dolls in good condition, but sales of Paradise riding dolls on eBay are sparse.

I even waffled a little, as 1:9 dollhouse furniture finds often entice me, but those can be used as standalone display pieces for Skipper and Stacie, or as Barbie furniture if we're not too picky. But... I don't want a second one of these, and in posing her for pics, I realized I just wasn't that into her.

She's an awkward size for making friends. Although she's only a little taller than Stacie, she's clearly meant to be more mature. (Yes, Skipper is going through an awkward period. I need to sew her some outfits.)

Eva is way too big to party with the taller dollhouse dolls, Britney and Unidentified Tenant of Britney. (Yes, that's a Britney Spears 7" doll, another of Mom's finds. I do love this one. She lives in a mansard mansion with a rental unit on the top floor. More on that later.)

I was going to list Eva for $5.99 on eBay and see what happened, but while taking her tasteful nude shots, I discovered that her arm joints are so loose that she can't hold a pose. On a super-rare antique doll, you can risk selling that way with a lot of disclaimers, but on a low-cost play doll, that is standing in the middle of the highway and asking to get negged. So into the donation bag she goes, since the condition is acceptable for a $2 play doll.

Goodbye Eva. Trust your rebel heart, take the road less traveled.
