Barbie as the Island Princess: First Thoughts
The intro gives me Little Mermaid vibes for some reason.
Man I know this is only five years from Rapunzel, but they really improved in the cgi! The designs look really pleasant!
Ok, the dolphins look a bit plasticy but still!
I’m glad they also have enough confidence to let the tale stand on it’s own without having to establish this is Barbie telling a story to her little sister.
Is it wrong that I’m shipping the peacock and panda? They feel like a middle aged/eldery gay couple and I love it.
Aww! Weeby was right! They totally are Barbie’s gay dads!
Yeesh… I do NOT like the elephant’s design. Why can I see her realistic human teeth? And those eyes!
Overall a very pleasant opening musical number that shows off the island.
Pleasant scene of Ro comforting Tikka during a nightmare.
This goodnight song is making my brain feel weepy.
I love how this is a male love interest who is full of life and isn’t afraid to be in touch with his feminine side. Love the bow on his ponytail.
I love how Antonio’s first instinct when approached by a crocodile is to risk reaching for a branch to put in its mouth.
OMIGOD SHE KNOWS THE ALLIGATORS NAMES!
I love how they go "aww" because they're sad they can't munch on him.
Wait a minute... one of the crocodiles is called Fang. Holy crap, this is the origin story of Jagged Stone’s pet!
I love how Azul found out he’s a prince and is immediately like “fuck this island, come on Sagi, let’s take Tikka and live it up!”
I'm loving the lyrics in this song about Ro being befuddled by Antonio's tech and clothes.
Gerard is a zaddy, not gonna lie.
I’m giggling like a fool at hearing Azul ranting and raving in peacockese.
I wonder if Barbie will try speaking to any of the land’s animals.
WTF is that thing the queen is holding? Is that a monkey or a very unfortunate looking baby?
The king looks pretty young, more like his late 20s instead of 40s. Honestly though, he’s really hot.
Aww, the royal monkey has a posh accent!
Queen Ariana is honestly not that bad looking at all. If I wasn’t gay, I’d find her kinda cute.
It’s nice that the rival love interest is actually a sweet girl. A good subversion of expectations.
The vocals of the villain song reminds me of ABBA. Which is always a good sign.
Great contrast between Ariana’s powerful belting and Luciana’s quiet tone.
Omigod I am loving Ariana’s lyrics in this song, diabolical and hilarious.
LOL AND HER RATS ARE DOING BACKUP CHOREOGRAPHY
Aww, the girls dressed Tikka up!
They really captured the awkward yet respectful dialogue between enforced couples with Antonio and Luciana.
The backing score for the ballroom dance is divine.
Get yourself a man who would abdicate from the throne just to be with you.
Ah, I see Tikka hid the letter, I assume due to attachment issues.
I feel like the Cheese song is kinda unneccessary. A few lines of dialogue would have got the message across.
I do find it kinda ridiculous that nobody can pick up on Ariana’s evil vibe.
Seems that traumatic events are the key to regaining Ro’s memories.
Dolphin ex Machina has arrived.
So this new queen is obviously Ro’s mom, right?
I feel like Ariana would’ve been smarter to not attempt poisoning Antonio and his family so that she can remain in her daughter’s good graces.
Luiciana saving Ro and proving her mother’s the criminal warms my heart.
Ok, I’m happy Ro and Antonio are together, but isn’t marriage rather quick?
Huh… the sudden reveal of Rosella being a princess all along kinda ruins the message of “Love doesn’t care about status”.
Overall, a massive step up from the previous films. The first two were decent flicks, but this one takes time to flesh out each and every character. Also the score was wonderful and I found the animation to be a pleasant upgrade. The ending was a bit of an ass-pull but a enjoyable film nonetheless. @artzychic27 @msweebyness @nerd-chocolate

'July 2023's box office was filled with major blockbusters and the highly-anticipated Barbie vs. Oppenheimer showdown, and here are the biggest stats, records, failures, and more from the past month. The 2023 July movie lineup made it one of the most anticipated times of the year for movie fans. New movies from directors like Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig arrived, as did the latest installments from the Mission: Impossible and Insidious franchises. It understandably made for an exciting time to go to theaters and check out new horror movies, comedies, action adventures, and much more.
While several movies from the June 2023 box office still made an impact a month later, the majority of July's box office was dominated by a handful of movies. The success of Barbie and Oppenheimer was expected in many ways, but surprises still came with Sound of Freedom's overperformance. Meanwhile, the trend of sequels largely stumbling financially continued with some of the biggest stars and pieces of IP in the world. The result was the July 2023 box office breaking records across the board to deliver huge hits and some massive flops.
13. Barbie's Opening Weekend Broke Multiple Records
The biggest box office story from July 2023 is the runaway success of Barbie's record-breaking performance. It all began with a historic opening weekend which saw Margot Robbie's movie make $162 million domestically and $356 million worldwide. This meant Barbie's opening weekend box office was the biggest ever for a movie that was not a sequel, remake, or superhero property. It also became Warner Bros.' biggest opening weekend since 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Adding to Barbie's records, it became 2023's biggest opening weekend and the biggest opening of all-time for a movie directed by a woman, giving Greta Gerwig a major achievement.
12. Oppenheimer Had Christopher Nolan's Third-Biggest Opening Weekend
More box office records were also broken by Oppenheimer, as it became the biggest R-rated movie in four years. However, the bigger accomplishment is that Oppenheimer's opening weekend is the third-highest at the box office for any Christopher Nolan movie. The only two movies that are ahead of it are The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. This means that Oppenheimer had Nolan's biggest opening weekend for a non-DC movie, topping Inception and his other original works. The success comes despite the movie's 3-hour runtime as audiences are flocking to 70mm IMAX screenings to see the widely-praised biopic.
11. Barbenheimer Hype Delivered The 4th Biggest Box Office Weekend Ever
The individual success of Barbie and Oppenheimer at the box office was impressive, but the two movies releasing in the same weekend also allowed records to break overall. The Barbenheimer phenomenon that drove over 200,000 people to watch the movies back-to-back in theaters generated massive hype. The end result was Barbie and Oppenheimer leading the way for the fourth-biggest box office weekend in history. Their total opening of $244M led the way for a $307M weekend domestically, which only fell behind the weekends where Avengers: Infinity War ($312), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($314M), and Avengers: Endgame ($401M) opened.
10. Barbie Had Record-Low Second Weekend Hold On Way To $775M Worldwide
The record-breaking success of Barbie continued through its first full week of release and the end of its second weekend. The movie had a record-low second-weekend drop of only 42% as it made an estimated $93 million. The incredible demand to see Barbie means the movie ends the July 2023 box office as the biggest hit. It has made over $350M domestically already and flew past the $775M mark globally. This performance has guaranteed that Barbie will make $1 billion at the box office. Now, the question becomes whether it will be only the seventh movie to crack $2 billion.
9. Oppenheimer Had Record-Low Second Weekend Hold To Pass $400M Worldwide
Christopher Nolan's 3-hour R-rated movie about atomic bombs has cemented itself as another huge box office hit after its second weekend too. Oppenheimer made another $46M domestically in its second weekend according to estimates, and that is good for a mere 44% drop from the first weekend. The movie has already nearly doubled its budget domestically alone, but the performance has also been strong enough to see Oppenheimer exceed $400M worldwide. With no immediate signs of slowing down, how many other Christopher Nolan movies it beat at the box office remains to be seen.
8. Sound of Freedom Became The Biggest Box Office Surprise Of The Year
While the success of Barbie and Oppenheimer was expected, the way that Sound of Freedom's box office has continued to perform has been a massive surprise. The movie about child trafficking employed a Pay-It-Forward campaign to hand out free tickets to any interested party and has remained a hotly debated movie weeks later. It has made nearly $150 million domestically thanks to the word of mouth that comes with a 100% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and Sound of Freedom's free tickets. With Angel Studios securing international releases now too, Sound of Freedom's box office will expand to new audiences.
7. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Massively Underperformed At The Box Office
Although Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny technically opened in June 2023, only its first day of release counts toward that month. The rest of its run has occurred during the July 2023 box office, and Harrison Ford's final entry in the franchise has not gone as anticipated. It opened below Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and has only managed to make $355M worldwide so far. That might sound okay for most movies, but Indiana Jones 5's budget ballooned to $295 million during production reportedly. This means the movie will not even come close to breaking even, making it a huge flop for Disney.
6. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning's Box Office Was Crushed By Barbenheimer
Another surprising box office disappointment has seemingly come with Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. The Tom Cruise-led sequel was expected to be one of the biggest movies of the year after the prior installment's success and Top Gun: Maverick's box office records. Despite Mission: Impossible 7 earning rave reviews, it has made less than $150M domestically and has become lost in the Barbie and Oppenheimer domination. The silver lining for Mission: Impossible 7's box office is that it has made nearly $450M worldwide so far, meaning there is still a chance it breaks even for Paramount despite its $291M budget.
5. Insidious: The Red Door Breaks Two Major Franchise Records
The 2023 box office has been strong for horror movies, and Insidious: The Red Door continued that trend with its release in July. The movie set a new franchise record for the best opening weekend for an Insidious movie after making $33M. The success did not stop there, as the horror movie finished July with a global total of $174M. That is enough to make Insidious: The Red Door the highest-grossing movie in the entire Insidious franchise worldwide. The success comes as plans have already been announced for the universe to expand.
4. Elemental Breaks Even After Hitting $400M Worldwide
Pixar's Elemental was one of the apparent box office failures from June, but the July 2023 box office breakdown reveals how great the animated movie has continued to perform. It made almost $70 million domestically during the month, bringing its total domestic haul to nearly $150M. The great legs have helped Elemental's box office hit the $400 million milestone worldwide. This appeared unfathomable upon its near-record low opening weekend for a Pixar movie. However, audiences have continued to check out the family-friendly adventure to the point where it now breaks even for the studio.
3. Haunted Mansion Has Record-Low Opening For Disney Ride Movies
Disney's Haunted Mansion reboot was the last major release of the July 2023 box office, but it did not land as the studio hoped. After poor reviews and with all eyes still on Barbie and Oppenheimer, Haunted Mansion opened to a mere $24 million domestically. That is officially the worst opening weekend for a Disney movie based on a ride since the previous Haunted Mansion movie starring Eddie Murphy nearly two decades ago. The updated version carries a $150M budget. Disney did not wait until October to release the family-friendly horror movie around Halloween, something they likely regret now.
2. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Becomes A Major Box Office Bomb For DreamWorks
Another box office failure in July came with DreamWorks releasing Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. The animated movie received positive reviews but never caught the attention of audiences after its release on the last day of June. It had a horrible $5 million opening weekend and will not make more than $50M worldwide at the box office. The disastrous performance for the original animated movie comes after the studio had back-to-back hits with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Bad Guys last year.
1. July's 2023 Box Office Was The Highest Since 2016
One final July 2023 box office stat really shows the full effects of the month. The 83 movies that played in theaters this month domestically collectively made over $1.3 billion. That means that the July 2023 box office was the highest for the month since 2016. It is the fourth-biggest July box office total in history, falling behind 2013, 2016, and 2011. This is a great sign for the overall strength of theaters considering those three prior years each had at least 178 movies in theaters, more than double the amount that has been available post-pandemic.'

Barbie as Rapunzel: First Thoughts
The following is my thoughts while watching this for the first time.
Wow, already an upgrade in the shading and lighting judging by this intro alone.
And the CGI looks better too! Nice casual outfit Barbie’s got on.
I assume each special will start out with Barbie reassuring Kelly about something? Hope this doesn’t get stale soon.
Already this special feels like it has an upgraded sense of scale.
Ooh so instead of a tower, it’s a mansion protected by a magic barrier. That’s… actually pretty cool! A nice change from the original, even if the home seems pretty modern looking on the outside.
I find it humorous that the name of one of the coolest Spidermen ever is also the name of a cockney rabbit sidekick.
A sweet and colorful dragon portrayed by Cree Summer? I’m getting flashbacks to Sonic: SATAM.
Peneople looks like if a Dragon Tales character was in an early PS2 game and I like it. She’s so cute!
Remember how I joked about Disney copyright last time? Seems like Rapunzel did the idea of Gothel being an attractive witch first.
Ok this entrance of Gothel riding through the forest is way more metal than Tangled.
Interesting how this Rapunzel calls Gothel “m’lady” instead of “mother”.
Speaking of Disney, Gothel’s design reminds me a lot of Lady Tremaine.
The ferret sounds VERY fruity.
Man Hobie straight up wants Gothel to die. Pretty dark for a Barbie movie.
I find it funny that shenanigans with a tea set caused a secret entrance to be found.
Lol, I can relate to Penelope’s hatred of snakes.
The plot thickens as we see Rapunzel discovering a message from her real parents way earlier than in Tangled.
Heh, the ferret uses it’s tail as a sleeping mask for Gothel.
Once again, a new room discovered via accident.
Wow and she’s already out of the tower and discovered the kingdom. This thing’s going along fast!
Why is seeing the chef in his comically large hat standing in one spot with a goofy smile on his face causing me to mentally cackle like a loon?
Punzie, the cook wasn’t trying to poison you. It’s just a free sample.
I LOVE the “rabbit’s ear as a radio antenna” gag!
Wait, Penelope has a dad?
Looks like both Penelope and Rapunzel have parental issues.
I can relate to Penelope’s fear of heights. It’s ok, honey, we can curl up into a fetal position together.
Hobie: “Does he ever smile?” Penelope: “Not around me”. God my heart just broke into a million pieces at that line. Why does this hurt more than anything Gothel says to Rapunzel?
It’ll never not be odd to see all of these children with the same face.
The Prince looks just like the one from the Nutcracker. I wonder if that’s intentional?
Of course the kings are too stubborn to hash things out. As a result, you get death traps like that pit.
I love the way Otto pronounces “vill-oge”. Hilarious.
Nice showing of both Rapunzel reporting her day to her friends and Otto ratting her out to Gothel at the same time.
Damn, Gothel using her magic to destroy Rapunzel’s paintings of Penelope is cold! Honestly this Gothel seems a lot more menacing and realistic than the Disney version.
I like how this Rapunzel is not only selfless but also has a backbone.
Trippy visuals with Gothel making the house literally grow.
As Hugo was assigned by Gothel to guard the castle, all he could think was “fuck my life”.
Hang on, the little blond boy’s name is Tommy? Wasn’t that the name of the younger brother in Nutcracker?
This boy’s got the “Phantom Menace Anakin” haircut and the personality. Brings back memories of the Prequels. Poor Jake Lloyd…
I like the fact that Stefan and Tommy have the same relationship going on that Barbie and Kelly do IRL
How on earth did the prince find the tower? Isn’t it in the middle of nowhere?
Apparently he “searched everywhere”, but it would probably take ages to go around the entire kingdom. I feel like it’d have been better if maybe one of Rapunzel’s animal friends had been followed by him.
Oh, wait. It was a dream! Ok, that makes more sense. Once again, I should have not underestimated the intelligence of the writers.
Headcanon: (Unless Penelope's mom shows up) Hugo's ex-wife is the dragon from Shrek and they share custody of Penelope. Hugo really hates donkeys now.
Holy crap, this is a beautiful melody Penelope is singing.
The knights remind me of Bert and Ernie. I’ve always loved that dynamic.
The mental paintbrush is a really cool idea. More properties should use it.
Rapunzel straight up saying she’d rather be dead than be a prisoner. Respect.
See, now is Stefan tired and exhausted from actually looking everywhere.
Maybe Rapunzel doesn’t want to know Stefan’s name in case it’s a dream or so that she won’t hurt as much if she loses him.
Once again, we have a prince not telling Barbie’s character he’s royalty.
It saddens me to know that the silversmith is unable to visit or speak to his brother due to the ban on Wilhelm’s kingdom. It’s a realistic worry.
Now we’re getting elements of Cinderella with the masked ball. Once again, connections since Gothel reminds me of Tremaine.
Hobie, I don’t think that Gothel is going to care if you’re in pain. Woman’s a total sadist.
Did Otto just orgasm?
The paintbrush really is OP. It can make clothes!
The mystical music is funny because right now, they’re doing the “girl tries on new clothes” montage.
Eh the final dress is ok, but I actually think the first “simple” one looked the best.
Funny how in Tangled, Rapunzel's hair gets cut by Eugene to stop Gothel. Here, Rapunzel's hair gets cut by Gothel instead.
Gothel, maybe don’t piss off the big strong dragon who has been willingly helping you?
Now we’re finally seeing King Wilhelm. I wish we got some more of him earlier.
Ok, Gothel has to have some sort of spell activated because how the hell did Stefan not think “why does your face look so different?”.
Love to see Penelope call her dad out on his bullshit, and get through to his softer side.
Nice to see her get some love from her dad after all this time.
WOO! Tommy used his bow and arrow to save his big bro! Kid’s got guts.
And now the little children pelt her with fruit!
Really impressive sword choreography for a Barbie movie.
So Gothel just stole Rapunzel from Wilhelm because she hated being in the friend-zone. Ridiculously petty.
And Rapunzel STILL offers forgiveness to Gothel! She truly is an angel.
Honestly, the fact that this Gothel is trapped inside the tower due to her own spell for all eternity is WAY more of a scary way to go then falling out of the tower like Disney’s Gothel did.
What a wonderful ending! Seeing everyone reunited and hearing that wonderful credits score gave me such a smile.
Hopefully a full review will come out sometime this month. I've got other creative AUs to help with. Let me know your thoughts in the comments and reblogs. @msweebyness @artzychic27 @nerd-chocolate

Barbie in the Nutcracker: First Thoughts
The following is my thoughts while watching this for the first time.
Credits look awful. Still, it’s 2001 and this is the first installment so I’ll give it a pass.
Only know the basic Nutcracker song and theme but nice that it uses an orchestra
Barbie herself doesn’t look too bad but her little sis… yikes.
Kinda weird to see these dolls moving like mocap performers.
Heh! Barbie’s voice actor has the same name as her little sister.
Kelly very clearly sounds like an adult woman trying to do a kiddish voice.
Lipsyncing is odd, looks more like generic flapping.
Surprisingly decent snow effects.
I’m assuming Clara’s parents are either dead or abandoned them. Or they could also just be on vacation.
Is it wrong that I find Grandpa cute? Gives off a very distinguished vibe. Especially that voice.
They call gingerbread houses “christmas boxes”? That’s… interesting.
Kinda wish they gave Clara a different voice from Barbie, or at the very least a different hairstyle.
The lighting is actually pretty good! Nice warm hues, makes me feel like I’m at a cozy inn.
Her little brother looks like the kids who played Fortnite and would tease me in high school. Of course his name is fuckin’ Tommy.
This CGI is reminding me of early PS2 cutscenes.
Aunt Drosselmayer’s got that 90’s Leo DiCaprio/Hugh Grant parting in her hair. Bleh.
Why is Clara the only blonde in the family?
Ooh! We’ve got some family drama between Auntie and Grandpa. This is getting juicy.
Elizabeth is giving me confident bisexual vibes with the voice and manner of movement. Bet you that’s why Grandpa doesn’t trust her.
Looking at the wiki I just found out that Trixie’s VA voices the Aunt, Starlight’s VA is Barbie and Cadence’s VA is one of the kids! Must be a Canadian production.
I will never not find the word “nutcracker” to be hilarious.
Clara, why tf are you fighting over a toy with your lil brother? You’re like… 17? 18? I dunno but it’s way too old.
Seriously they gave Tommy the most punchable face ever. Not that I’d ever punch a kid but I can see why other kids his age would deck him.
Magic shenanigans are ensuing.
I like the medeival look of the rats. The CGI actually fits them well.
Clara wakes up to see an anthropomorphic warrior rat right next to her eating something and is just like “goddamn it, git ya varmint!” I love it.
Oh, she thinks she’s dreaming. That makes sense to why she’s so calm.
Hmm… I feel like the Rat King should look a bit more evil, and larger as well. Still, TIM CURRY! I’m gonna LOVE this.
Woah! We’re getting a fight scene! A swordfighting scene to be exact!
Oooh the Rat King’s magic and can shapeshift his weapon. That’s metal AF.
Tim Curry putting everything into his performance as usual.
I’m kinda surprised we’re already getting a Nutcracker-Rat King battle. I’d have thought they’d save that sorta thing until the third act.
Did they really have to change it to Sugarplum Princess? Fairy just sounds more powerful.
Wow! This snowy cave is beautiful! Something out of a classic painting.
EWWW THESE LIL SNOW FAIRIES LOOK DISGUSTING!
Did this nutfucker not realize that an icy fortress would have ice for the walls?
The fairies doing ballet looks weird because they have nothing to stand on.
Please don’t tell me the small fairy is staying, I hate her.
Dance is currently reminding me of Fantasia.
“The fairies probably went off to make a blizzard somewhere”. The way he said that nonchalantly had me cackling.
The effect of Clara’s footsteps turning into flowers is beautiful.
Pimm sounds like he’s an absolute troll online. Also gives me Psychicpebbles vibes (though I know it’s not him).
Wow the Rat King is a straight up genocider.
Why do all the kids look like Kelly?
OH DEAR GOD THAT LITTLE BOY LOOKS HORRIFYING.
Wait Prince Eric? Are they legally allowed to call him that? We all know how much Disney loves copyrights.
Man these kids are little shits and their outfits are gagworthy.
Major Mint definitely got a big personality, and the voice actor does a good job with it.
Ok Mint is hilarious and is so far the best part of the movie.
Nice to see some Asian rep with Captain Candy.
Wow, Rat King turns his failed employees into stone. Dark!
The zoom in on the Rat King as he says “that’s it?” made me giggle.
Thomas Astruc looked at the Rock Golem and got his first idea for an akuma.
Wait how the hell does Clara know that the Nutcracker is Prince Eric? I mean I already assumed because of the plot of the original ballet, but how does she know?!
The bridge scene gives me the willies, since I’m afraid of heights.
Wow this flower fairy is the only kid-looking character that has a decent design.
Didn’t expect a song to be interrupted by an enemy.
Lol, the Major’s monocle falls off as he sees the giant.
Glad to see the fairies serve a purpose other than dancing. Kick that giant’s ass!
Captain Candy’s a better man than Mint, as he actually makes sure that he gets saved.
Once again, the island is beautiful! Reminds me of Oz with the colored roads.
Ooh clever! At first I thought the castle’s backdrop looked really fake but I just factored it was because it’s 2001 CGI. But it was actually a trap!
Nice we see a test of Clara’s character that she passed.
The invisble hand touching Clara’s hand is actually making me feel kinda teary-eyed internally.
The Rat King definitely has a Napoleon complex.
Loving the character arc for Nutcracker with his final duel.
Ah! So now the Rat King is growing. Fits for the climax.
Huh… Prince Eric looks more like Jimmy Pesto than a prince.
Lol Major Mint realizes he’s been shittalking the prince.
Huh, so Clara’s the princess? I guess it sorta makes sense since it’s her dream.
For those princes out there who are hated by the public, all ya gotta do is fight a giant mouse.
Mint and Candy got the moves! Best dancers of the entire movie.
The final dance between Eric and Clara is absolutely gorgeous.
The villain was taken down by a snowball… I love it.
God Kelly Sheridan and Kirby Morrow really put everything into the scene where Clara disappears.
Lol Kelly’s Canana accent shows up when she says “It’s not a story”.
“What’s all this foolishness about mice kings and bats, Clara? Enough of your womenly hysteria! Time for a lobotomy!” Grandpa, basically.
Actually now that he’s in a suit, Eric looks a lot hotter.
I’m surprised Barbie’s little sister had the attention span to listen to a 1 hour story.
I'll be making a full review of the film soon. Let me know thoughts in the comments and reblogs. @artzychic27 @msweebyness

Come on Sparky, Let's Go Party!
I watched the Barbie movie a few months ago. This was my only experience with the franchise, not because I'm a stereotypical dude who avoids anything "girly" (I grew up watching Tinker Bell and MLP ffs). Rather I had thought that Barbie was a pretty generic franchise with nothing particularly interesting. Well... apart from one thing. Preminger and "How Can I Refuse?" I found him hilarious and his song to be genuinely wonderful. You can imagine my surprise when I found out it came from a Barbie movie of all things.
And then MsWeebyness showed me more of the songs and introduced me to what I call the Barbieverse. There's a crap ton of movies that have turned out to be memorable for lots of people of my generation. So after she began posting her Miraculous Barbie Movie AU, I had an idea.
I'll be starting the Barbie Blockbuster Breakdown tomorrow. Each day I will review a Barbie animated movie that I have watched. I'll go over the plot, characters, animation, music, story, voice acting and more. I feel that as a noob to Barbie, I'll go into all of these films and give each of them a chance. Plus, I'll be able to connect to Weebs and chat about our favorite things, see if they match up.
In fact, they'll be reblogging and giving their own thoughts on each film. Something I very much look forward to.
Finally, a brief disclaimer.
I'm skipping the 80s movie.
Not every film is currently on Barble Official Movies (thanks to Weeby for the recommendation), the channel I will be using. This means I will skip any movie not on the channel and eventually post a review when said movie is uploaded.
That's everything for now.
Tomorrow, my life will be in plastic, and I hope it's fantastic.

Nice work, Sparky! Here’s Weeby’s take! This one isn’t one of my favorites, but I love it nonetheless! I always thought the score was beautiful, as I just love the Nutcracker music! (My fave is ‘Mother Ginger & the Polnichelles’) I always enjoyed the story overall, and the romance between Clara and Eric is one of the sweetest! It was pretty well-developed! They did pretty well for 2001 CGI, imo. But the best parts of the movie for me are Major Mint, who is absolutely hilarious, Pimm, who is a sassy king, and the Mouse King, because TIM CURRY! Overall, I agree with Sparky’s rating!
Barbie in the Nutcracker: Review
Hello, everyone! Sorry about the wait, homework was harder than I thought. Let's jump right into it!
Now I only know the basic gist of The Nutcracker, but I assume this story is relatively similar to the ballet. Still, for a Barbie movie I was surprised by how much of a plot there actually was. Prince Eric provided an interesting and subdued character arc, proving himself as the Nutcracker. There's plenty of decent swordplay, excellent dancing, thrills, chills and by the end I felt myself invested and rooting for Clara and her companions to defeat the Rat King (voiced by the fabulous Tim Curry), and for the protagonists to get together. The voice acting was particuarly noteworthy, with Kelly Sheridan providing a sense of calm and humbleness as Barbie and the late Kirby Morrow giving a earnest performance as the Nutcracker. Major Mint stood out to me as the most hilarious of the bunch, clearly the voice actor was having a blast. I also found the film to make the most of its budget, and the shoddy CGI surprisingly didn't bother me. As for the music, while there's no original songs, the orchestra provides some extra immersion to the story. I do feel like the opening scene with Barbie and Kelly was rather pointless in the grand scheme of things, but it's a small critique for an overall enjoyable movie.
7.5/10
Lemme know what you think in the reblogs and comments. @artzychic27 @msweebyness

'The dual release of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” on July 21 has restored the box office to its pre-COVID glory, and the effects have been felt around the world.
To date, “Barbie” — a comedy starring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll who goes through an existential crisis — has crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, making Gerwig the first solo female director to do so. But “Oppenheimer,” in which Cillian Murphy portrays the father of the atomic bomb, has also stood its ground, making over $602 million globally — an amazing feat for a three-hour-long film based on a historical figure.
Though “Barbie” has held tightly onto the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office since its release, “Oppenheimer” has fought its way to the top in other major markets, including India and Hong Kong. And, both films have stirred up some controversy in various countries due to their themes — specifically, “Barbie’s” feminist undertones and “Oppenheimer’s” depiction of the creation of the bombs that were dropped in Japan — oftentimes making one the winner by default.
As both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” head into their fourth weekends of release, below is a breakdown of how the movies have performed so far in the world’s biggest markets, using industry estimates and data from Box Office Mojo.
Domestic (U.S. and Canada)
“Barbie” has dominated the box office in the United States and Canada, making over $485.4 million as of Aug. 9. “Oppenheimer” has made almost exactly half of that just before its fourth weekend of release, coming in at $245.5 million.
China
China, which is culturally remote from the Barbie-doll phenomenon and its western standards of beauty, initially shunned “Barbie.” But after opening poorly – fifth place with just $8.2 million in its opening three days – the film has shown some powers of endurance.
Chinese state media has frequently ridiculed Hollywood for its diversity and inclusiveness efforts, an attitude suggesting that Greta Gerwig and Hasbro’s multiracial, gender-fluid reinterpretation of society stood little chance of major success in the Middle Kingdom. But, in a country where male violence against women is an enduring scourge, “Barbie” has become a trending social media topic and has been quietly embraced by those seeking a more just society. Box office to date is $34 million after 18 days on release.
United Kingdom
After three weekends, “Barbie” has grossed $87.5 million and “Oppenheimer” $53.4 million in the U.K. In the process, “Barbie” surpassed “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($67.7 million) to become the highest grossing film of the year, with “Oppenheimer” in third place. “Barbenheimer” powered the July box office to $205.1 million. The July box office was 78% higher than June and 27% higher than July 2022.
Mexico
“Barbie” has also been received better in Mexico, where it has grossed over $48.9 million to date. However, it has recently been overtaken by “Meg 2” on the box office charts. “Oppenheimer,” on the other hand, has made around $15.4 million to date.
Australia
The release of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in synchronized fashion on July 20 led to Australia’s biggest cinema weekend since the pandemic. Both have continued strongly into their third week. “Barbie” has passed A$60 million ($41.1 million), making it the top film of the year to date and Warner Bros.’ highest grossing film ever in the market. “Oppenheimer” has a more than respectable $19.3 million.
Germany
It’s been a tighter race between “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in Germany. “Barbie” has earned $34 million in the country since its release, with “Oppenheimer” just behind with more than $28.5 million.
South Korea
Korea was on Robbie’s promo tour and the country was among the first to open “Barbie” (July 19). But the film opened meekly against decent local competition and has not revived — $3.89 million after nearly three weeks in cinemas counts as a flop. Searching for an explanation, commentators have suggested that feminism is a dirty world in male-dominated Korea. Korean society is arguably the most hierarchical in the world and those who question the status quo are considered troublemakers.
Korean audiences, who typically embrace top quality acting performances, may find “Oppenheimer” more interesting. It releases on Aug. 15.
France
“Barbie” fever has also reached France, with Gerwig’s film grossing $29.3 million so far. However, the French — who tend to appreciate darker films than the average moviegoer — are also enjoying “Oppenheimer,” making it a close second with over $26.5 million earned in the country as of last weekend.
Japan
There remains no current release date for “Oppenheimer” in Japan, which suffered the nuclear bombing discussed in the film.
“Barbie” is set to release on Friday (Aug. 11), but sensitivities have been stirred by distributor Warner Bros.’ apparent endorsement of fan-created “Barbenheimer” memes that had made light of nuclear detonations. In an unusual step, Warner Japan publicly criticized its U.S. parent company, eliciting a quick and unconditional apology. It is not clear whether that storm has now dissipated, or whether the chance of “Oppenheimer” ever releasing in Japan has been made more remote.
Spain
“Barbie” reigns in Spain, and has made $26 million in the country, topping the box office charts until last weekend’s release of “Meg 2.” To date, Oppenheimer has grossed a similarly impressive $14.4 million.
The Netherlands
It’s been neck-and-neck in the Netherlands for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” with “Barbie” earning $12.32 million so far and “Oppenheimer” taking in $13 million. But, “Oppenheimer” has topped the box office charts for the past couple of weeks.
Brazil
“Barbie” has highly outperformed “Oppenheimer” in Brazil, earning $39.5 million in the country as of Aug. 7, while “Oppenheimer” has picked up only $10.3 million.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong, a market where Hollywood and local-Cantonese films are typically the biggest draws, got “Barbenheimer” on July 20, like Australia, but had a different reaction. “Oppenheimer” has reached $6.9 million, while “Barbie’s” cultural references have not fully resonated. It has $3.67 million to date.
India
India is perhaps the biggest market where “Oppenheimer” has outgrossed “Barbie.” It is also the only major market where official and reliable box office numbers are hard to come by. Despite a sex scene featuring a line from Hindu holy scripture “Bhagavad Gita” that raised some hackles, “Oppenheimer” opened in pole position in a market where Hollywood has just a 10% market share with the audience preferring local fare. After three weekends, per Box Office Mojo, “Oppenheimer” has $17 million in India.
There are no official numbers available for “Barbie,” but informed industry estimates place the India gross at $5.8 million, a third of “Oppenheimer.” While the performance of “Barbie” is respectable in a market where the brand and the doll has nowhere near the kind of cachet it enjoys elsewhere, the success of “Oppenheimer” is harder to decode.
As producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, former head of Disney India who has also served as the president of the Producers Guild of India, observed in a recent interview with Variety: “Oppenheimer” broke “all the rules” as a “non-sequel, non-IP — that holy grail of pure cinema.”
United Arab Emirates
“Oppenheimer” topped the box office in the United Arab Emirates for the first two weekends after its release, only taken down by “Meg 2’s” release last weekend. So far, the film has grossed an impressive $6.6 million in the country.
“Barbie” just released in the UAE on Thursday, so it’s too early to know how the film’s debut went over. After a release date was originally set for July 21, “Barbie” faced delays in the UAE and Saudi Arabia over edits the region wanted to make allegedly pertaining to LGBTQ-related themes. Films releasing in the region are often cut to align with its conservative ideals regarding sex, homosexuality and religious issues. If the studio is unwilling to make these edits, then the film can be banned in the region, which happened recently with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” due to the appearance of a “Protect Trans Lives” flag.
Poland
Though “Barbie” has made more than “Oppenheimer” in Poland, having earned $10.9 million so far, “Oppenheimer” creeped up to the No. 1 spot at the box office for the weekend of Aug. 4. It earned a slightly higher $1.147 million compared to “Barbie’s” $1.144 million last weekend, suggesting a potential sea change in the country’s box office behavior. In total, “Oppenheimer” has made $7.1 million in Poland thus far.
Colombia
Colombia has embraced “Barbie,” which has earned $8.5 million in the country so far, much of which was made during the movie’s stellar $4.4 million opening. “Oppenheimer” has made $2.67 million as of last weekend.
Saudi Arabia
“Oppenheimer” has done extremely well in Saudi Arabia, having grossed $10.2 million so far. The historical drama has topped the country’s box office in all three weekends of its release.
However, as in the UAE, “Barbie” was just released on Thursday after facing a potential delay, allegedly due to its LGBTQ and feminist themes. Only time will tell if the film will catch up with “Oppenheimer,” though its action and animation-leaning box office history suggests that it may not.
New Zealand
Like in Australia, “Barbie” took off in New Zealand, topping the box office charts for all three weekends of its release and grossing over $6.2 million so far. “Oppenheimer” has also done well, though it has only earned roughly half of “Barbie’s” total, making $2.9 million in the country so far.
Turkey
“Oppenheimer” is outperforming “Barbie” in Turkey, earning $5.2 million to date compared to “Barbie’s” $3.19 million. Though “Barbie” debuted on top with a $1.5 million opening, “Oppenheimer” has held the No. 1 spot on the box office charts for the past two weekends.'

'The fabled weekend finally arrived this past weekend, with the opening weekends of Oppenheimer and Barbie combining to form "Barbenheimer". Typically, two high-profile blockbusters like this releasing on the same weekend typically isn't a great thing, as it usually means that one of the two films could lose potential audience members to the other. That proved not to be the case for the opening weekend of Oppenheimer and Barbie (which also happened to be the same weekend as San Diego Comic-Con), as the unique combination of nuclear radiation and pink plastic made for one of the biggest box office weekends in film history.
The admitted winner of that weekend is certainly Barbie, which is already one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Greta Gerwig's critical and financial hit rollerbladed past its reported budget of $145 million with a worldwide gross of over $300 million in its first weekend, giving Gerwig the new record for highest weekend box office for a film directed by a female filmmaker. The rampant success of the film is a much-needed success for theater and the box office, given the unprecedented financial failures of The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, both of which are all but confirmed to be box office bombs.
So with Barbie painting the box office pink, that is undoubtedly bad news for Oppenheimer, right? Well, actually, Oppenheimer defied all expectations and also had a more than rock-solid opening weekend, proving that the Barbenheimer sensation was more than just a meme. Did Oppenheimer do well enough to be considered a box-office success? Read below to find out our budget breakdown for Christopher Nolan's critically acclaimed World War II biopic.
Keep in mind that the full budgetary details for projects like Oppenheimer are not typically shared publicly, and much of the following is based on reported data, established net worth, etc.
Budget for Oppenheimer by Department
Cast
Christopher Nolan has assembled one of the largest star-studded casts he's ever worked with to tell the story of nuclear physicist Robert J. Oppenheimer properly, and it's all led by a veteran of Nolan's filmography. Since being cast as Scarecrow in The Dark Knight trilogy, BAFTA nominee Cillian Murphy has worked with Christopher Nolan a few times, appearing in Inception and Dunkirk. Murphy was likely paid about $10-20 million for his lead performance in Oppenheimer.
Other significant supporting characters include Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, and Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock.
In July 2022 Variety reported that Blunt, Damon, and Downey were paid $4 million apiece for their roles in the film, which is less than they are typically paid which typically is around $10-20 million.
Also in the film are other recognizable figures like Alden Ehrenreich, Jason Clarke, Kenneth Branagh, David Krumholtz, Alex Wolff, Matthew Modine, Dane DeHaan, David Dastmalchian, Josh Peck, Jack Quaid, and more, making it, so the budget must be at least half the film's reported $100 million budget if not more so.
VFX
According to Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer has zero CGI effects within it whatsoever. We don't know exactly how that's possible in a film all about the creation and testing of the atomic bomb, but impressive practical effects like that don't come cheap. Digital effects cost a pretty penny as well, but there's a reason why Hollywood studios have generally strayed away from practical effects in favor of CGI. Considering the cast list is already massive and star-studded, the VFX budget likely makes up most of, if not all of, the rest of the budget.
Filming Locations
With the cast and visual effects likely taking up the vast majority of the budget, Oppenheimer takes full advantage of its limited filming locations. Most of the movie takes place in the deserts of New Mexico, which is likely a pretty cheap location to film in.
The Costs of Promoting Oppenheimer
Turns out, releasing the same weekend as Barbie was the best publicity Oppenheimer could have possibly asked for. The viral Barbenheimer sensation led to both films getting incredible publicity, and it didn't cost Warner Bros. Discovery or Universal Pictures a single dime. The average marketing budget for a blockbuster close to this size typically ranges from $65 million to $200 million. It's rare that a marketing budget exceeds that of the production budget (though that was the case for Barbie), so Oppenheimer's marketing campaign is likely somewhere between $65 million and $100 million.
How Much Does Oppenheimer Need to Make to Break Even?
The total budget for Oppenheimer reportedly adds up to $100 million. With that in mind, Oppenheimer will need to make at least $200 million at the box office to break even. To be considered a resounding success, Oppenheimer will need to make somewhere around $400 million.
How is Oppenheimer Doing at the Box Office So Far?
While the film has not broken even yet at the time of this writing, Oppenheimer will almost certainly break even. Oppenheimer made a grand total of $180 million at the international box office in its record-breaking opening weekend. 20% of that total comes from IMAX returns alone, setting a new record for the massive company with the massive screens.
Oppenheimer will likely still keep that momentum going for the next few weekends, as the R-rated feature is really the only thing coming out in the next few weeks that appeals to adult audiences. Next week, Oppenheimer will have to fight off the 999 friendly ghosts from Disney's Haunted Mansion reboot. On August 2, a new challenger will come in the form of another reboot with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. as well as the aquatic spectacle of Meg 2: The Trench later that week on August 4. Oppenheimer will hang onto its IMAX screens until the week of August 11, with the release of Gran Turismo.
How Do Oppenheimer's Box Office Projections Compare to Prior Christopher Nolan Films?
Currently, Oppenheimer is currently ahead of Following, Memento, The Prestige, and Insomnia, making it Nolan's eighth highest-grossing film. This places the film just behind Tenet, which is Nolan's seventh highest-grossing project, though it was heavily affected by the pandemic. Oppenheimer has a fairly good chance of catching up to not just Tenet, but also Batman Begins at $373 million, Dunkirk at $527 million, and Interstellar at $677 million. Nolan's top three are still the box office juggernauts to beat, with Inception having a record of $830 million and both of the final two Dark Knight films making well over a billion dollars at the box office.'

''Barbenheimer' fever took hold in the UK as Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie took £30m on their opening box office weekend.
According to the UK Cinema Association, that makes it the most successful weekend for UK cinema-going since 2019.
That year, Disney blockbuster Avengers: Endgame opened with takings of £43.7m.
The Vue cinema chain said this weekend marked the second biggest in its history by admissions.
Barbie is now on track to become the biggest film released so far this year, ahead of Super Mario Bros.
A more detailed breakdown of the weekend's UK box office figures will be published later on Monday.
Barbie's marketing campaign has been huge - and hugely successful - with debut takings worldwide of $337m (£293m).
US and Canada takings were enough to make it the biggest opener of 2023 so far in that region.
The film took an estimated $155m (£120m) according to distributor Warner Bros, while Oppenheimer made $93.7m (£72m), Universal Pictures said.
The North American box office figure broke the opening weekend record for a female director, easily overtaking the $103.3m opening of Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman.
Both films have been a welcome relief for cinemas who are battling against the juggernaut of streaming.
Oppenheimer's plot is centred on the development of the first atomic bomb, starring Cillian Murphy and directed by Christopher Nolan.
It took just $8.2 million in its opening three days, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway, although it's not unusual for Chinese audiences to favour homegrown cinema over Hollywood and some analysts considered that hitting the $8m mark was above expectations.
Meanwhile, Indian cinemagoers were in for a surprise at one screening of Nolan's film, which was reportedly accompanied by Barbie subtitles.
"Friend of my cousin posted on insta that a cinema played Oppenheimer with Barbie subtitles," wrote Twitter user Sapun.
Barbie's release was delayed in Pakistan's Punjab province on Friday over "objectionable content", officials said.'

'IN THE new Mission: Impossible movie, Tom Cruise features in stunts that are audacious even by the movie star’s daredevil standards. From an epic train crash to a scene where he rides a motorbike off a cliff, the actor has left collective audiences mesmerised at the sheer scale of what is unfolding on the big screen.
Ever since Cruise’s Ethan Hunt came perilously close to setting off an alarm system while dangling from a ceiling in an iconic scene from the first Mission: Impossible movie, he has upped the ante when it comes to making us believe our eyes.
Cruise — who remains one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, four decades after he first shot to fame in Risky Business — has always embraced the big-scale blockbuster. But this year, he has some competition.
In one of the busiest periods in recent years for new summer movies, Cork actor Cillian Murphy is very much in the mix. Murphy has been earning rave early reviews for his performance in Oppenheimer, the story of American scientist J Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.
Christoper Nolan’s historical thriller couldn’t be more unalike another highly anticipated film which is released, along with Oppenheimer, on July 21.
Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling playing the famous dolls Barbie and Ken, in a movie that has drawn enormous interest since its first trailer was released. Barbie is directed by Greta Gerwig, whose previous films include Lady Bird and the latest adaptation of Little Women.
Ironically, one of the biggest release periods at the movies comes at a time when Hollywood is facing a crisis. This week, the unions representing actors in the US voted to take strike action.
The Galway Film Fleadh became the first film festival in the world to feel the early effects of the strike, with US actor Matthew Modine — a guest at this year’s Fleadh — voicing his support for his peers at SAG-Aftra from the west of Ireland.
The impacts of the strike will be huge.
SAG-Aftra, the labour union which represents members of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists counts more than 160,000 film and TV actors, including many household names.
The action marks the first time since the 1960s where both SAG-Aftra and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) have walked out of their jobs and taken to the picket lines for a fairer deal.
In the coming weeks, we will likely see A-list stars walk away from movie sets and film premieres as strike action takes effect. Actors including Barbie star Robbie and Oppenheimer’s Matt Damon have already voiced their support for the action, following a breakdown in talks between the unions and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers this week.
Among the many issues involved are pay, safeguards against the use of actors’ images through artificial intelligence, and residual payments, given to actors when a show is repeated.
“It’s unbelievably important,” said Damon in an interview prior to the strike being announced.
We’ve got to protect the people who are kind-of on the margins.
"Twenty-six thousand bucks a year is what you have to make to get your health insurance. There are a lot of people [for who] residual payments are what carry them across that threshold. If those residual payments dry up so does your healthcare and that’s absolutely unacceptable.”
Amid such turbulent times, the anticipated success of Mission: Impossible, Oppenheimer, and Barbie will be a welcome boost to both the movie industry and cinema owners in Ireland.
While Hollywood will be the main beneficiary from the release of three cinematic juggernauts, a high-profile run of films has a knock-on effect for Irish cinemas and even Irish movies, according to some of those who work in the film industry here.
It’s a case of a rising tide that lifts all boats, as prolific films generate broader interest in going to the cinema and in other releases.
“Absolutely. Christopher Nolan has spoken this week about this,” according to Tracey O’Brien, southwest regional manager at Gate/Arc Cinemas in Cork.
“We’re used to and want a crowded market in the summer, lots of choice. People generally have more free time.
Going to the cinema can often be a habit so the more titles people are going to see, the more they’ll think of coming back to the cinema during quieter times.
“It absolutely helps in the bigger sense though in that coming to see movies, any movie, means that your local cinema stays open for longer hours, but it also means that if the cinema has revenue from bigger titles, it allows space to be created for smaller Irish or arthouse titles.
“We’re better positioned to be able to show Irish titles that may not have the big budgets but deserve to be seen on the big screen.”
Those Irish and independent titles are debuting at the Galway Film Fleadh this weekend. The prolific Irish festival showcases some of the most anticipated Irish and international films coming to cinemas in the months ahead. The Dublin International Film Festival, held in February, brings both prolific and smaller independent films to the city.
Later this year, both Cork International Film Festival and IndieCork will showcase the films to watch out for through autumn and winter.
“We adore festivals here in Cork,” says O’Brien. “As the principal venue of the Cork International Film Festival and home of IndieCork, we see first hand the benefits across the spectrum of stakeholders from film makers, to cinemas to movie-goers.
We are such a talented country, and film-makers seeing their work on the big screen gives so much inspiration to keep going, to dream bigger and better.”
As well as the draw of blockbusters, many regard Ireland’s huge success at the Oscars this year — where Irish talent secured an extraordinary 14 nominations — as a driver of renewed interest in going to the pictures. It also showed how the concept of a mainstream success has broadened, with films like An Cailín Ciúin and The Banshees of Inisherin drawing huge audiences to cinemas here.
“The spotlight that awards season put on Ireland and Irish talent was fantastic, and I am sure the spin-off benefits will be felt for a long time,” said Patrick O’Neill of Wildcard Distribution, which has released such hits as The Young Offenders and Black ’47.
“Ireland as a location, and the quality of Irish creatives being celebrated, will no doubt encourage future investment in the sector here.
“With the amount of Irish films produced every year, there is a good chance some will be on release, or leading up to release during this period,” he said of the current blockbuster season.
“The more people go to the cinema, the more trailers and posters they will see for upcoming films — so it can be a valuable marketing tool.
“Last year, there were three Irish films that really clicked with audiences, and delivered bumper Irish box office — Belfast, The Quiet Girl [An Cailín Ciúin ], and The Banshees of Inisherin — and I believe there is no reason that success cannot be replicated on a more regular basis in the future.”
Siobhán Farrell of Eclipse Pictures, whose recent hits include Debenhams picketers documentary 406 Days, agrees that the success of Irish talent in big international films has a knock-on benefit for storytellers here.
“The recognition of Irish talent, both at home and abroad, reflects an Irish film industry that is writing, acting and directing at the highest standards,” she said.
“It’s great to celebrate our culture and creativity — this success will only help to inspire future stories and encourage more talent into the ever-widening industry of shorts, features, animation and documentaries.”
This is helped further by a summer blockbuster run, she says, as audiences not only get to see Cruise, Cillian, and Barbie do their thing, but discover what other films are on the way.
"A boost at the box office is great for the entire industry and our colleagues in exhibition and distribution.”
The idea of a summer blockbuster is widely regarded to have started with Steven Spielberg’s iconic creature feature, Jaws.
Released in the summer of 1975, it became a huge collective viewing experience, featuring scenes, often-quoted lines and that soundtrack that resonate to this day. It was the first film to make over $235m at the US box office — an enormous figure given the much lower ticket prices of that time.
In fact, the term blockbuster was used in Hollywood many decades before — but Jaws is the movie which propelled its popularity and saw the term really resonate with audiences.
The concept of the summer hit has been driving release schedules and intriguing audiences since, and seeing Irish stars in big-budget blockbusters has become the norm.
Cillian Murphy’s turn in Oppenheimer will be part of its big draw not only for Irish fans, but for his vast fanbase worldwide, as well as its other high-profile stars including Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh. It helps that his role in Christopher Nolan’s Second World War epic has been getting the Corkman some of the strongest early reviews of his career.
Cruise’s latest Mission: Impossible, too, is getting strong word of mouth and is expected to keep drawing audiences throughout the rest of the summer.
The fact that Barbie has been generating buzz for months in advance of its release, along with the presence of its A-list stars Robbie and Gosling, virtually guarantees its success at the box office at a time of diverse choices for movie fans.'

Weeby’s Thoughts!
Penelope is my sweetest child, she’s prob my fave Barbie sidekick. She’s sweet, she’s brave and actually actively does her best to help!
I. DO. NOT. LIKE. HUGO. He’s just a jerk to his daughter the entire time, and tbh, their reconciliation at the end just feels like too little, too late.
Gothel is intimidating as hell. Angelica Huston nails it.
The MUSIC of this movie. Constant as the Stars Above, Wish Upon A Star and the theme…my heart…

Yeeeeah, I could do without the elephant’s teeth. Also, that monkey… thing freaked me out as a kid

Weeby’s Notes:
This is one of my absolute favorites! I adore the score, characters and story! All wonderful!
NGL, I legit thought Sagi and Azul were supposed to be Ro’s dads when I was a kid and Tika was her sister.
Antonio is HOOOOT.
I adore Princess Luciana. She’s a wonderful subversion of expectations.
Ariana absolutely cracks me up. Hilarious villain, just below Preminger.
Always More and the Reunion Song will always make me cry!

Reply for: “Why is Clara the only blonde in the family?”
Science voice: The Barbie Gene is a rare genetic mutation which causes someone, primarily female to be born with blonde hair, have a love for pink, and go on to do great things such as become an astronaut president with a doctorate or go on strange adventures such as entering a realm of fairies or become a mermaid princess.

Awesome job, Sparky! My full thoughts will be posted with the full review, but here’s some Weeby notes!
Major Mint is one of my all time fave Barbie supporting characters! He’s effing hilarious! I love his accent and his inability to read situations. He and Captain Candy are boyfriends, prove me wrong!
The Rock Giant legit gave me nightmares as a kid. Jesus Christ, at least Ivan still looked vaguely human as an akuma! WTH is that?!
Pimm is one of my fave villain sidekicks in the franchise! He’s so sassy and I adore his voice! #TeamPimm
I agree, the ending dance is gorgeous! They animated the movements beautifully and Clara’s dress? *Chef’s kiss* Also, they put their all into the scene where she disappears!
I love how it’s hinted Aunt Elizabeth knows about Parthanea and was friends with Eric’s father!
TIM CURRY. He makes everything better!
Next up is Rapunzel!
