ANOTHER EARTH, FILE 001 – BATMAN

Circa 1996-2003 – ‘BRUCE WAYNE’S TERRIBLE HORRIBLE NO-GOOD VERY BAD DECADE’

The turn of the century is bad for everybody in a world where there’s a new catastrophe every week, but for Batman especially, this is a rough stretch. To this point, all of the despotic alien dictators and insane transdimensional imps have been haranguing Superman, up the coast in Metropolis, But in 1996, the Thanagarian Invasion of Earth occurs, and the Justice League is shaken to is very core. In 1997, Grayson trades up to Nightwing, and Bruce takes on a new Robin, the young Jason Todd, who is definitely going to be fine don’t worry about it. 

This'un is a doozy, truly comic-tier explanation below the cut.

In 1998, shit hits the fan for Batman specifically. Surprise! The Joker kills Jason Todd while perpetrating a scheme outside of the US, right as Bruce and Jason are on the cusp of truly bonding as father and son. A couple months later, the Joker reappears in Gotham and cripples Barbara Gordon, then-Batgirl and also the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon, one of Batman’s staunchest allies. The Joker’s sudden and somewhat inexplicable slide from dangerous, but goofy, crime gimmicks into genuine stochastic terrorism sets off a chain reaction amongst Gotham’s gallery of rogues. In 1999, at around the one-year-mark of Jason’s death, Tim Drake convinces Bruce to accept him as the new Robin after reverse-engineering Batman’s secret identity.

And in 2000, a new and dangerous foe emerges to challenge Batman, self-styled as Batman’s greatest foe – his bane, if you will. It’s Bane. And Bane breaks the bat. During Bruce’s recovery period, he selects Azrael to fill in for him. Azrael, as an unstable zealot at the best of times, ultimately defeats Bane but also does real damage to Bruce’s personal sphere; between the death of Robin II and Bruce choosing to keep his infirmity a secret from his coworkers in the Justice League and subsequent confusion around just who was in the bat-suit during this period, Batman’s reputation takes a substantial black eye at every level, and Bruce starts to cut himself off from friends and family. 

In 2002, a massive earthquake hits the United States’ eastern seaboard, with the epicenter just barely offshore of Gotham City. The city is plunged into absolute chaos due to extreme structural damage to a huge portion of Gotham’s downtown area; the island on which most of the city is built is cut off from the mainland, and the federal government evacuates about 75% of Gotham’s civilian population. The remaining 25% of civilians are basically left to die, as the government declares Gotham City a federal No-Man’s Land, locking down its border. Warring supervillain factions and desperate militarized police forces are eventually brought to heel… by Bane, who takes over Gotham in the confusion. 

Bruce returns to Gotham with Catwoman and finally defeats Bane personally, bringing an expanded Bat-Family to bear and restoring his public image. He also internalizes, finally, the value of relying on other people. He takes a liking to the new Batgirl who emerges during this trial, Cassandra Cain, and formally establishes ties to Stephanie Brown (briefly Robin, currently Spoiler). Simultaneously, Lex Luthor leverages a metric fuck-ton of political influence to get Gotham’s borders reopened, using the positive publicity to get a pardon of past crimes from the President and undetake a Senatorial campaign. 

The suit reflects how utterly fucked Batman’s life is during this period of time. Battered, frayed, with armor plating literally strapped on where old pieces have been damaged or torn off. The tech boom resulting from the Thanagarian Invasion has begun to hit every layer of civilian life at this point, which means villains are starting to get more and crazier gadgets and Batman is forced to keep up. Stylistically it takes inspiration from late-80s/early-90s Batman suits; it’s also the debut of my solution to the costume boyshorts ‘problem’ (I don’t necessarily think it’s a problem, mind you) – Thigh highs!

barbara  follows  canon  events,  from  her  troubled  fiance  of  jim  gordon  arc  in  season  one,  to  her  insane  in  the  membrane  arkham  arc  after  being  forced  to  murder  her  own  parents  by  the  ogre,  and  all  the  way  through  that  wild  ride  that  was  seasons  three  to  five.  i  cannot  think  of  any  immediate  canon  divergences,  but  i’ll  be  sure  to  add  any  in  when  they  come  to  me.  this  verse  covers  every  event  before  the  finale’s  timeskip.

verse  002    (  post  -  series  universe.  )

this  verse  is  set  in  the  future  timeline  gotham  presented  in  their  finale.  babs  is  now  a  mom  to  barbara  lee  gordon,  daughter  of  jim  gordon.  she  thrives  as  a  successful  businesswoman  and  semi  -  reformed  career  criminal,  though  she’s  still  more  than  happy  to  get  her  hands  dirty  when  she  needs  to.  

verse  003    (  the  walking  dead  universe.  )

this  version  of  barbara  remains  similar  to  her  canon.  prior  to  the  outbreak,  barbara  kean  was  still  a  former  art  gallery  owner  turned  woman  who  ran  her  own  criminal  empire,  dealing  weapons    &    running  a  nightclub  called  the  sirens.  the  switch  happened  after  a  serial  killer  known  as  the  ogre  kidnapped  her  and  forced  her  to  murder  her  own  parents,  putting  babs  in  arkham  asylum    (  and  a  coma  after  she  later  escaped    &    tried  to  murder  her  ex-fiance's  new  girlfriend  )    for  a  hot  second.  the  only  parts  of  her  background  i’m  erasing  are  any  with  supernatural  elements,  such  as  her  resurrection,  the  demon’s  head,  etc.  as  those  do  not  fit  in  with  twd  lore.  when  the  walkers  started  swarming,  few  survived.  babs,  and  her  two  right-hands;  tabitha    &    selina  stayed  together,  forming  a  survivalist  group  that  would  later  become  known  as  the  sirens.  at  first,  they  let  whoever  could  benefit  them  in,  but  after  a  betrayal  from  a  man  called  butch,  barbara  closed  invites  to  women  only.  they’ve  got  a  bit  of  a  reputation  for  targeting  other  survivors  for  supplies,  weapons,  anything  it  takes  to  survive.  their  base  is  an  underground  bunker  they  discovered.  and  yes,  it’s  important  to  note  babs  still  does  all  these  things  in  heels.

verse  004    (  supernatural  universe.  )

this  version  of  barbara  remains  similar  to  her  canon.  the  name  barbara  kean  hit  the  press  when  a  human  serial  killer  known  as  the  ogre  kidnapped  her,  and  forced  her  to  murder  her  parents.  mind  was  never  the  same  after  that.  it  snapped  and  when  she  was  found  trying  to  kill  her  ex-fiance’s  new  partner    (  twice  ),  they  put  her  in    an  insane  asylum,  but  not  before  a  short  coma.  here,  a  corrupt  demon  known  as  dr.  hugo  strange  experimented  on  the  patients.  by  the  time  barbara  was  released,  having  been  incorrectly  declared  sane,  there  was  no  going  back  for  her.  she  slipped  out  of  normal  life  and  entered  the  criminal  underworld.  that’s  where  she  met  bela  talbot.  these  days,  barbara  has  put  herself  in  the  neutrality  side  of  humans  vs.  supernatural,  selling  weapons,  occult  antiques,  etc.  to  the  highest  bidder,  demon  or  hunter.  her  business  takes  place  in  her  night  club,  the  sirens,  which  allows  all  creatures  as  long  as  they  pay.  on  top  of  this,  her  and  her  girls,  also  known  as  the  sirens,  have  a  violent  reputation.  in  this  verse,  barbara  has  died  at  least  once  at  the  hands  of  her  own  friend,  tabitha.  she  was  resurrected  by  a  demon  known  as  ra’s  al  ghul.  when  barbara  killed  ra’s  al  ghul,  she  became  head  of  a  group  of  demons  known  as  the  league  of  assassins;    a  cult-like  organisation  of  supernatural  trained  killers,  which  babs  allows  people  (or  monsters)  to  hire  for  the  right  (expensive)  price.  this  has  also  given  her  the  gift  of  precognition.  

verse  005    (  the  boys  universe.  )

barbara  kean  is  a  vought  experiment  gone  wrong  at  sage  grove  center.  once  an  innocent  art  dealer,  she  found  herself  driven  criminally  insane  when  a  human  serial  killer  known  as  the  ogre  abducted  her  and  forced  her  to  murder  her  parents  to  survive.  she  then  tried  to  murder  lee  thompkins,  her  ex-fiance’s  new  partner.  this  final  act  saw  her  originally  sent  to  arkham  asylum,  but  following  an  escape  (and  a  second  attempt  on  lee’s  life),  a  comatose  barbara  was  instead  sent  to  sage  grove.  here,  she  (like  many  other  patients)  was  used  for  compound  v  testing.  this  gained  barbara  the  name  siren,  due  to  her  abilities:    enhanced  senses    /    agility    /    strength    /    voice  mimicking    /    and  perhaps,  her  most  lethal,  a  variation  of  siren  songs.  the  first  is  a  low,  enticing  hum,  that  acts  in  a  hypnotic  manner,  lulling  her  intended  victims  to  her  and  creating  the  illusion  that  she  is  the  person  they  love  most  rather  than  barbara.  while  under  the  spell,  these  people  are  devotely  loyal  to  her,  but  this  can  come  to  an  abrupt  end  if  the  illusion  is  shattered.  the  second  is  a  sharp,  piercing  shriek  that  creates  a  sonic  blast,  usually  triggered  when  enraged.  this  song  can  shatter  glass,  throw  people  across  the  room  and/or  can  kill  due  to  causing  internal  bleeding  if  piercing  enough.  the  third  is  a  constant,  never-ending  ringing,  that  creates  madness.  this  madness  can  linger  even  when  the  song  stops  if  suffered  long  enough.  upon  realising  that  barbara’s  mental  capacity  was  too  unstable  to  bear  such  power,  vought  made  an  attempt  on  her  life.  unfortunately,  they  didn’t  count  on  her  already  have  being  under  her  spell,  using  hospital  employees  to  break  her  free.  these  days,  she  runs  an  underground  nightclub  that  also  serves  as  a  weapons  armory.  she  often  deals  to  the  highest  bidder.

The statement was enough to take M’gann off guard. She had spent practically all her life wanting to be accepted and to belong somewhere. Shapeshifting was one of her abilities, turning into other people, different forms. She did it throughout her everyday life too, shapeshifting to fix herself into a hole. To make herself fit in where it was desired. It was easier that way, find a way to belong and make yourself fit that mold rather than push yourself into a space that you can’t fit. 

“Are you sure about that?” M’gann asked Barbara quietly, afraid of speaking too loudly may somehow splinter and fracture this delicate moment. “I’m too alien to be a human. I’m too much of a white Martian to be a green Martian and vice versa. I don’t really know where in the future I’ll find belonging.”

Barbara Gordon’s arrival had been on Bruce’s radar, but with the grand opening of Wayne Enterprises on such a large scale he had a bit of running around to do before they could catch up. Now that it had been done and over with a time was set and he arranged for her to be picked up via limo and brought to the company’s establishment. 

He waits for her arrival, pacing across the empty first floor of the building. Those on staff for the day had been given an early and extended lunch so they could meet without prying eyes and eager ears. A sort of anxiousness settled over him at seeing her and what her arrival meant for Gotham. One less person he trusted to watch over the city he loved.

One of Stephen’s favorite things about working independently was avoiding the paperwork. He was never blamed for anything damaged when he was taking down villains, and he certainly wasn’t blasted on the news on whether or not the government was losing control because he was running around. Of course, that all changed after the registration. Now, he had responsibilities, and maybe even more since joining the little band of Avengers. 

Papers on his latest arrest in hand, he walked through the very confusing halls of the base, trying to find where exactly he’d been told to drop this off. His cape lifted and tugged him back to go down the hall he’d passed by. Stephen reckoned the cape only chose that way because Stephen himself hadn’t. As he wrestled with resisting the cape’s non-verbal order, he nearly ran right into someone, only just barely catching himself on his heel. 

“My apologies,” he began before his cape began lifting to peek around him at the young woman. He smacked it back down before offering the woman a smile. “You wouldn’t happen to know where processing is?”

How I feel about this character: dick is one of those characters i can easily talk myself into an emotional frenzy about. he was my first favorite character ever, and he’s a pretty good blueprint for who my favorites would be in other media in the years to come. i love dick and i love who bruce becomes when dick is introduced to the story; i love their dynamic as the dynamic duo. i love that dick and alfred hit it off almost immediately upon meeting. i love that dick never gives in to despair and that even with bruce as his mentor he never stops seeing the best in people. i love that he’s a quippy, flippy sidekick boy. i love his lil domino mask.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: i do think he and barbara gordon are just a really sweet couple. i especially like that barbara is a couple years older than dick is; idk, you just don’t see that often. dick is absolutely the kind of person who would want a girlfriend that is smarter and more badass than he is, and babs definitely fits that bill. again, girlboss/malewife supremacy.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: i mean it’s his father/son relationship with bruce, do i even have to say it at this point. a lot of times when i talk about what i love about dick i end up talking about bruce almost as much, because it was actually the dynamic between the two of them that really drew me in as a kid watching the animated series. again, i love who bruce becomes when dick enters the narrative; i love that he sees himself in this kid who’s lost his parents to Gotham’s underbelly, even though they have almost nothing else in common. i love that bruce’s reaction to seeing himself in this kid is to take him in, to make sure he doesn’t have to go through this alone, to give him something to do with his grief and his anger. i love how much they butt heads and challenge each other, and i also love that no matter how much they fight and how mad they make each other, and even after their big falling out when dick becomes nightwing, there is never ever a question that if one of them needed the other, the other would be there.

My unpopular opinion about this character: idk all comics opinions are unpopular lol.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i’m a huge proponent of characters i like crying more, so. always willing to see more of that.

Favorite friendship for this character: his friendships with all the other batkids are all great, but i have a soft spot for his relationship with jason, which is why i’m so drawn to the idea of an au where bruce dies instead of jason, leaving dick and jason to have to navigate that together. their dynamic is similar to the one between dick and bruce in that they’re very different from one another, but jason is also different from bruce; jason is a rough-around-the-edges bad-boy type, and i think that creates an interesting tension between him and dick, but once the two of them begin to understand each other they really understand each other.

When the convergence happened, Dinah had assumed she had died and was brought back. However, she has managed to learn from others what had really happened and has no choice but to continue to rebuild her life in this new world.

Dinah had an apartment in Gotham which was often visited with either Team Arrow or Barbara and Helena.

Dinah is a team player but has remained unaffiliated from the new organisations, not trusting them yet. However, she still works with the Justice League as a reserve member, preferring to operate with the Birds of Prey or Team Arrow, focusing on crimes that often fall through the cracks of the big fights.

Dinah has always believed that it is the little people who make the world what it is. She knows what it is like to not have someone look out for you and she doesn’t believe those big wigs truly care what is happening on their streets. Regular people are not bound by votes and impressions. They could be raw and honest.

006.  what’s  their  current  mental  state  at  ?  their  physical  state  ?

Dinah, physically, is in her prime and has a intense training schedule, often involving demanding physical activity and often spars, having a passion for martial arts and combat. Mentally, Dinah has been keeping a level-head but has been using her job and her vigilantism to distract her from her own feelings.

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another):  I’m gonna cheat and go off on a rant.  With Barbara, I don’t think the writers knew what to do with her half the time.  Then with Ecco, the series got cancelled earlier than the planned ending (*cough* FOX *coughs up lung*) so her death was just out of nowhere before any character expansion.

Favourite Friendship:  I’m gonna say Selina and Ivy (before Season 5) as well as Selina and Bridgit

Character I most identify with:  Probably Harvey in the aspect that he is so confused by LITERALLY EVERYTHING but will remember specific details from like 20 years ago

Character I wish I could be:  Well I would never really wanna live in Gotham so I guess none of them?
