headcanon that at bar lupin with ango and oda, dazai would often try and pet natsume. every single time natsume would obviously move away so that his ability doesn't deactivate but oda and ango thought it was the funniest thing in the world how the cat seemed to have a distaste to dazai.

safe to say, whenever dazai either found out or realised natsume was that damned cat he was pissed with all the jokes made about him from ango and oda.

or, may i propose dazai is at the bar one time by himself + cat natsume hanging around and he is determined to catch him. he chases the cat all around the bar as it jumps off of the shelves. they make sure to play this game of chase as the bartender isn't looking and as natsume jumps down, he just grazes dazai's finger and falls to the floor in his human form.

dazai isn't always a genius, proof being when he was dumbfounded when a grown man picked himself off of the floor and calmly walked out of the bar. dazai stood there stunned.

When we go back to Japan, my friend REALLY wants to actually Bar Lupin. (We found it with little difficulty while grabbing sweet potatoes in Ginza... an activity I would highly recommend.) But since we both mostly know Bar Lupin from Bungo Stray Dogs, I made a rule that we actually had to read something by one of its patrons before we try walking in the door.

She agreed, and today I picked up my first books by Japanese authors who appear in BSD: I Am a Cat by Natsume Sōseki and Kappa by Akutagawa Ryūnosuke. As best I can tell, while Natsume appears in the bar in BSD, he wasn't actually a patron of it in real life, and Akutagawa was not a patron in real life or the show, but I need to work my way up to the Big Three.

So I've started Kappa, and good hell, I feel like I'm reading Japanese Jonathan Swift.

Man ends up in strange otherworldly country with strange otherworldly inhabitants? Check.

The society of these inhabitants somehow greatly mirrors the society the man came from? Check.

The whole story quickly devolves into thinly veiled social commentary using the otherworldly inhabitants as a way to simultaneously poke fun at and criticize the author's culture and make the reader think about the ridiculousness and/or hypocrisy innate in it? Check check check.

This mostly has had 2 effects:

A gratefulness that I got to study multiple writings from Swift such that I have a bit more direction while reading this.

A great and passionate desire to have BSD Akutagawa meet up with a BSD version of Jonathan Swift.

I just started writing a fic! I'm nowhere near done, but I wanted to post my WIP here. If anyone has advice, that would be nice! I hope you like it so far. :)

Bittersweet

All good things come to an end, right? We can choose to ignore this fact and turn a blind eye to the truth, but we can't avoid the inevitable. It was a depressing thought, but Dazai couldn't help but ponder the fact.

Alcohol tended to do that. Even if the welcome numbing sensation was there, it couldn't silence his thoughts completely. Dazai would stare blankly at the sticky surface of Bar Lupin's counter as he pondered such thoughts. Just as he was doing now.

Dazai came to the bar earlier than he usually would. He drank his first drink rather quickly, now nursing his second glass of whiskey.

Would Bar Lupin always be here? Will he always meet Odasaku and Ango for a drink? No, he won't. Why does he keep on asking himself such stupid questions? Dazai knows that everything he longs for is lost, so why would Lupin be any different?

"Dazai? You're here early." Oda's voice was loud compared to the quiet jazz in the otherwise silent bar.

"Ah. I guess I am, Odasaku!" Dazai didn't hear when Oda first came in, so he was quite startled. His voice failed to sound upbeat, so he chuckled afterward.

As Oda took his usual seat next to Dazai, Ango came soon after. He looked exhausted, like usual. Dazai wondered if there would ever be a time that he didn't look like that. Ango ordered tomato juice, and Oda ordered a whiskey on the rocks as Dazai did.

They began talking about something that Dazai didn't find all that interesting. He tried to follow along, but as he neared the bottom of his glass, he started to lose focus. This time, he took interest in a stain on the wall before losing himself to the many thoughts in his head.

"What's on your mind, Dazai?" Oda asked, noticing Dazai's blank look. His question startles Dazai just as he had when he first arrived.

Dazai's head whipped in Oda's direction, just now remembering where he was. He waited a few moments, trying to process what he heard before eventually forming a response. "My mind? Nothing much, just feeling..." he hesitated. What was he feeling? "Bittersweet, I suppose."

"Bittersweet?" Ango asked. He hadn't been paying attention, but Dazai's words interested him. "Why bittersweet?"

"I was thinking about how nice our times are here! Complaining about our jobs and bullying Ango~" Ango rolled his eyes and began to protest, but Dazai interrupted him before he could. "It would just be a shame if it didn't last.”

Lupin continues to be an amazing place. Met a fan-freaking-tastic Australian Dazai tonight at the bar, and the master introduced us - I really need to make an Instagram to share my cosplay ���� everyone uses it!
