Around 7:30 a.m. this morning, Evelin Banev, known as "Brendo", who had been internationally wanted, surrendered voluntarily. The police are set to hand him over to the Main Directorate "Execution of Punishments," according to information from BNT.

Evelin Banev has been sought since 2018 for drug trafficking, with convictions in both Bulgaria and Italy. In 2021, he was found in a house near Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital. The Ukrainian police reported that he used foreign documents and the house was rented. A drug laboratory was also discovered there.

In October of that year, it was revealed that Brendo held Ukrainian citizenship, which allowed him to avoid serving his sentences, as the Ukrainian constitution prohibits the extradition of its citizens to other countries.

Over the years, Brendo's name has frequently appeared in news reports both in Bulgaria and internationally. In 2012, he was among 30 people arrested during the "Cocaine Kings" international operation. Known for his caution, Brendo has managed to evade the justice system for years. Investigations have revealed that he uses multiple identities.

Evelin Banev-Brendo, who was convicted in Bulgaria, voluntarily surrendered to Bulgarian authorities this morning. Video footage from Flagman clearly shows him arriving at Sofia Central Prison, accompanied by his lawyer who confirmed that Banev is turning himself in to serve his sentence.

Banev had disappeared shortly after being sentenced to six years in prison for money laundering in 2018. At that time, Bulgarian authorities issued an international arrest warrant for him after he was not found at his registered address for incarceration. Additionally, Romania had been seeking him for a 10-year sentence related to drug trafficking, while Italy awaited his extradition to serve a 20-year sentence in the "Cocaine Kings" scandal.

In Bulgaria, Banev was convicted for his involvement in an organized criminal group operating between October 17, 2002, and May 30, 2005. The group conducted financial transactions using funds known to have been acquired through drug trafficking across Bulgaria, Great Britain, the British Virgin Islands, Switzerland, and Austria.

Update: The Ministry of the Interior is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Evelyn Banev-Brendo's return to the country. Atanas Ilkov, head of the national police, stated through the Ministry of the Interior's press center that they are actively working to determine how Brendo managed to enter Bulgaria. He emphasized that comprehensive analysis takes time and that conclusions will be drawn after thorough examination of all available data and ongoing search efforts over the past six years.

On Sunday, 14th January 2024, Deacon Symeon Menne was ordained to the Holy Priesthood at the Church of St Anthony the Great in Newcastle. His Grace Bishop Raphael of Ilion presided during Matins and celebrated the Divine Liturgy. Amongst those concelebrating were the V. Revd Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne Dr Antonios Kakalis, Hieromonk Melchisedec from the Monastery of St John the Baptist in Essex, Revd Oeconomos Andreas Amirhom, Revd Presbyter Anton Caius Curgu and Revd Presbyter Nikitas Banev. Also present were the Revd Dr. Justin Mihoc (Durham) from the Romanian Orthodox Church and the Very Revd Lee Batson, Dean of the Newcastle Cathedral. Prior to the ordination, Andreas Lumsden was elevated to the order of Readers by His Grace Bishop Raphael.

In his ordination speech, Deacon Symeon expressed profound gratitude to His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain for blessing his journey to priesthood. Deacon Symeon recounted his own spiritual journey in Orthodoxy, starting with his Baptism at the Monastery of St Catherine in Sinai in 1991, which has ever since been lovingly supported by the Archbishop of the Monastery and the Sinaite Brotherhood, including his Godparents, Hieromonk Arsenios and Monk Moses, as well as the Abbot and the Brotherhood and Sisterhood of the Monastery of St John the Baptist in Essex. He acknowledged with utter reverence the unfailing love of his first spiritual father, the late Archimandrite Symeon, of blessed memory, and his current one, His Grace Bishop Raphael. He also extended his deep appreciation to the priests, who guided him during his Holy Diaconate with love and patience, especially Fr Antonios Kakalis, Fr Andreas Amirhom, Fr Andrew Louth, Fr Justin Mihoc, and Archdeacon George Tsourous. He also cordially thanked his family, especially his dearly beloved wife Konstantina, his rock and support, and cherished children Savina and George Lucas.

After recounting all his blessings, he then reflected on a saying by St Sophrony of Essex about the purpose of the Christian Life, which is to ‘ask the Lord Jesus to send the Holy Spirit into our hearts to cleanse us and make us like Christ’. Recollecting his experiences from several of his patients’ last moments on this earth, Deacon Symeon reiterated the need to steadfastly live by the Saint’s advice, whilst continually preparing for the afterlife through humility, discernment, prayer, fasting, faith, hope and love. He acknowledged that there is no better place on earth to get closer to our Saviour than in Church, most importantly through our participation in the Eucharist. Deacon Symeon humbly accepted his sacred duty, seeking forgiveness and vowing to be a diligent shepherd, inspired by the country’s Christian Saints. He urged all to devoutly follow God, referencing St John Climacus’ Spiritual Ladder of Divine Ascent to highlight life’s trials. His moving speech concluded with a call for prayers for himself, for peace in our parishes and in the whole world.

Bishop Raphael warmly welocmed Deacon Symeon’s ordination, marking it as the realisation of Archimandrite Symeon’s (of blessed memory) desire. He lauded Deacon Symeon as a spiritual heir, destined to further the legacy of St Sophrony through genuine love for God and others. Bishop Raphael highlighted the dual nature of priesthood as both a cross to bear and a path to salvation, urging Father Symeon to cherish his blessings, family, and spiritual lineage, along with the growth opportunities presented by life’s challenges. He counselled Father Symeon to maintain humility and attentiveness in his service and encouraged him to stay true to himself, being approachable and humble, and to continuously seek refuge in Christ and the Jesus prayer against trials and temptations. Representing the Archbishop, he expressed joy in welcoming Father Symeon to serve in the altar with unwavering dedication.

Following the ordination, the Parish of St Anthony the Great in Newcastle, under Chairwoman Savina Iliadou’s guidance, organised a grand reception to celebrate Father Symeon’s ordination. The event was a joyful gathering, attended by the church community, family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues, all there to support Father Symeon as he embarks on this new chapter of his spiritual journey.

This is also based on the piece of fanart that I can't seem to find on my blog but it's . . . well, it's basically what happens here. Although probably sans angst.

Like You Mean It

Jyn strode in the cantina and spotted Cassian immediately. Tucked in a corner booth as usual, quiet and unassuming as usual. If she'd been anyone else, she would have overlooked him entirely.

She slid into the booth next to him and said, "Hi," head cocked, smiling through her lashes.

Except for a momentary tension in his brows, he reacted in kind. "Well, hi there."

She estimated she had about thirty seconds to change her appearance.

She yanked the tie out of her hair without a care for the stray hairs she ripped out with it, and shrugged out of her coat, shoving it deeper into the booth, behind his back. She shoved her fingers through her hair, shaking it out of its bun-crimp, and leaned into him, smiling flirtatiously enough to knock a Gundark silly at thirty paces.

He played along, putting his arm around her. It settled warm over her shoulders, and although she was still in deep, she relaxed at its weight.

As the cantina door swooshed open and a set of thudding footsteps carried through, she caught a loose strand of hair and twirled it round her finger. "What you drinking?"

"Banever ale. Have you had it?" Just another couple flirting in a cantina. Nothing to see here.

"Mmm, no. Is it good?" Her eyes flicked past him for a split second, checking the mirror, then locked back on his.

"Pretty good. Want a taste?"

She bit her lip and then smiled. "I'd love a taste."

He tipped his glass toward her. She pursed her lips, shook her head and said, "No, more like this." She leaned up against him and pressed her mouth to his.

She felt the shock in the lines of his body, but he was too good to give into that for more than a split second. Then he kissed her back.

He kissed.

Her back.

His stubble scratched her chin and his hand at the small of her back was strong and his lips moved on hers and she thought, Oh, this was a bad, bad idea.

He pulled away as if he'd heard, but only an inch or so. Her breath shuddered out of her lungs.

Did his as well? Or was the echo of her uneven breathing just that loud?

Then she registered that the stormtroopers' heavy tread had retreated, and the cantina's front door was swishing closed.

He'd noticed. She hadn't.

He didn't let her go.

"Five minutes?" he murmured.

She knew he was asking if they should stay in the cantina longer. She was an idiot for hoping he meant more kissing.

"Give it ten," she said, and turned her nose into his neck, just like a woman cuddling her lover.

Later, Jyn found him in the front room of their safe house, just switching off a comm. "Retrieval?" she asked, plopped down cross-legged on the floor.

"At dawn," he said. He seemed distracted. He'd been distracted since the cantina.

Come to that, so had she.

"Why can they never retrieve us at the crack of noon?" she groused.

He smiled a little and put his comm away.

"Listen."

"Mmm?"

"That - earlier. You know. At the cantina. You know."

His eyes moved to hers.

"That was just to sell it," she said quickly. "And - and camouflage myself. That's all."

"Yes," he said. "It was good thinking."

"Right," she said. "Just wanted to make sure you knew that."

"I did," he said.

"Well, good." She got to her feet. "I'm turning in. Got to be sharp at kriffing dawn, after all."

She left him behind and curled up in her bed, cursing herself for being disappointed.
