Indigenous People's Day

On this Indigenous Peoples' Day, we are featuring Matika Wilbur’s recent publication Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America, published by Ten Speed Press in 2023. Wilbur (b. 1984) is a visual storyteller and member of the Swinomish and Tulalip peoples of coastal Washington. She holds a degree from the Brooks Institute of Photography alongside a teaching certificate that has shaped her style of educating through narrative portraits.  

Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America, a book born from a documentary project of the same name, resolves to share contemporary Native issues and culture. In 2012 Wilbur set out from Seattle to visit and photograph all 562 plus Native American sovereign territories in the United States.

Wilbur’s engagement with the communities she visited resulted in the creation of hundreds of dynamic portraits and documentation of conversations about “tribal sovereignty, self-determination, wellness, recovery from historical trauma, decolonization of the mind, and revitalization of culture.” She refers to her portraiture approach as “an indigenous photography method” that includes several hours and sometimes days of interaction with the participants, an exchange of energy and gifts, and asking sitters to choose their portrait location. The outcome is a stunning collection of Native narratives and portraits.

Blaine Anderson is the frontman for the hottest new band around, Breaking Stereotypes. Kurt Hummel is a fashion columnist at Vogue, who is also working on getting his Masters Degree in Fashion Design at Parsons. When Blaine finds Kurt's portfolio in the back of a taxi, he is captivated by all the incredible designs in it, and takes it upon himself to return it, hoping to commission a few of the designs from him. During their first meeting, Blaine finds out that Kurt isn't a fan of Breaking Stereotypes, nor does he have any clue who Blaine actually is.

Helloooooo folks . . I haven't done one of these in a LONG time, I know. Summer - into September - kept me busy with helping a friend out with a (non writing related) project. So I haven't been doing much . . .

Well, now I'm playing MAJOR catch up with everything that got pushed aside while I was busy with other things. That does include writing!

I will admit, have hit a bit of writing block . . and maaaaybe (ok, most definitely) have also been totally engrossed in reading all those #kinktober / #flufftober / #angstober /#klainetober fics you talented folks have been posting!

(I'm soooo now wanting to try my hand at kinktober, but will admit I am highly intimidated.)

First off, I have not forgotten my RWRB fic, Puppy Love . . I'm working on the next chapter, a snippet for you:

“Haz.” “Haz. .  .” “Pssst . . . Haz . . .” A crumpled piece of paper  collided with Henry’s forehead and plopped unceremoniously onto the desk before him., knocking him back into the present moment. “I’m sorry, what?” Henry asked. Pez snorted as he looked at his best friend.  David had just jumped up onto Pez’ lap, licking his face excitedly.  “Can you believe this, David, dear boy, “ Pez asked the beagle.  “I’m being ignored.  Your father’s ignoring me.  Me!” Henry rolled his eyes as he resumed scanning the financial paperwork in front of him.  “You are impossible.” Pez continued to ignore Henry as he continued his conversation with the eager pup.  “David, I feel that you would understand.   You see, your father’s obsession . .” “I’m not obsessed with Alex!” “Case in point, “ said Pez, grinning at David, who snuggled further into his arms.  “I did not bring up your handsome doctor’s name . . yet your father knew EXACTLY who I was talking about by inference alone.” Henry huffed and tried once again to focus on the mind numbingly boring paperwork in front of him.  Though the mention of Alex’s name, did bring the vet to mind . . . again.  His beautiful eyes, those dark curls that Henry was longing to run his fingers through again . . those hands.  Henry shivered thinking all about what he saw those hands do during their last video call. Another crumpled sheet of paper smacked him in the chest. “Obsessed.” Pez reiterated with a pointed look to his best friend.  “You are obsessed, my darling.  You might as well admit it.” “Am not!” “Infatuated, then . .” “That’s practically the same thing . . and as I had mentioned before . . I am not.” “Are too.” “Am not." "Are toooooo . . ." "Are we really going to stoop to this?” Pez smirked.  “Oh, but it’s so much fun to see you this flustered over a boy.”

Here's a little thing I am trying to write for the first week of Klainetober prompt:

Clutching a red Solo cup filled with some god knows what potent alcoholic concoction, Blaine slowly worked his way through the room, stopping to say hello to a few students he recognized from class, but mostly admiring the handiwork and imaginative costumes many folks had come up with. He was just about to go up to a young woman who had amazingly crocheted an entire King Bowser costume when he was jostled by a roaming drunk band of actors in Hamilton outfits, reenacting one of the numbers from the show.  Blaine cursed under his breath as he lost his footing and stumbled into someone behind him. Blaine’s hand had jerked upward as he fell to the ground, causing the contents of his cup to fly into the air and land on him and his unsuspecting victim behind him. “Hey, what the hell?!” a voice behind him shrieked. Blaine struggled to pull his cape off of his head, which had fallen there as he took his embarrassing spill to the floor.  Once he did, he found himself staring upwards at the most beautiful man on earth.  Who was extremely pissed off. And dripping wet. “Oh, my god,” Blaine said as he quickly got to his feet , nearly slipping in the puddle of his drink and falling down once again.  “Oh my god.  I am . .I am so . .so sorry.  I didn’t mean to . . . I swear those guys . .  .” “Are assholes!” The beautiful stranger yelled off in the direction of the roving drunken students many of whom laughed out loud and threw both Blaine and him the middle finger. Desperate to make things right, Blaine (ever the fix-it guy) began taking the edge of his cape and using it to pat dry the other man gingerly.  The stranger was dressed in a very form fitting black shimmery body suit that hugged every inch of what appeared to be a lithe, trim figure.  A gold belt rested low on his hips, accentuating the stranger’s shoulder to waist ratio.  A necklace of golden medallion sat upon his chest and in his upswept chestnut hair peeked a pair of black cat ears.  Leather knee-high, lace up boots and a menacing black leather whip finished off the ensemble. It was both electrifyingly sexy and intimidating at the same time.

I can so see Brittana and Klaine, once both have kids, they compete on who’s the better ”gay parents”, and if a child is better having two moms or two dads. But they don’t even compete in traditional parenting stuff, but rather just random stuff like ”who is better at singing with their kid” and ”who can dress their kid in the most layers in the shortest amount of time”

And then it turns out it simply depends on how the kid is reacting, one of the kids decides they don’t wanna sing and stays quiet, so their parents loses, and in the dressing competition someone needs to go potty so they have to undress them again.

They also decide to switch kids for a day to see ”which ones takes care of kids the best” and it turns out they can’t treat the other kid/s the same as they do with theirs because it’s totally other kids with completely other personalities that needs other kinds of adapting.

Then it ends in some absurd way, like Brittany just puts on the most random song and all kids start dancing and she’s like ”let’s settle it, we’re all awesome, and everything can be solved by putting on -random artist/band/song-”

You may have answered this a hundred times before, if so, point me to your previous answers! How would you have improved Kurt’s story in canon? What are the major things you would have changed, and some of the niggles and minor things that drive you mad?

Hi! You know - I don't mind getting these kinds of questions again. My answers tend to change as the years pass.

I'm not sure if there's anything major I'd change? I don't mind the overall structure of his story (@snarkyhag - omg, I used the word 'structure' for the first time in forever, feels nice, lol.) But Glee has very jaggedy story telling, in that it does highs and lows but doesn't do details or in-betweens very well.

I think his arcs in Season 1 and 2 are pretty well done, and despite me always wanting /more/ - the show was about an ensemble, and he did relatively well. I really have no complaints there.

In Season 3, I would have liked his story to be less attached to Rachel and more on an individual path. Everything that happens in his story line (that isn't related to Blaine) is a consequence or set up of Rachel's story line, and it's maddening. I don't mind that he doesn't get into NYADA -- I wish he would have stayed out, tbh, but the narrative around him getting or not getting in should have been devoid of what Rachel's story needed to be.

I also wish he and Blaine had had more intimate moments -- I don't mean, necessarily, kissing/sex/romance -- but more moments where the two of them are just them together, in a more relaxed way. Hard to do in a school setting, sure, but things like the missing Box Scene from the Christmas episode sprinkled in more often would have been nice.

Of course - I would have loved so much more in Season 4. More fall out from the Break Up. More of Kurt exploring New York City. It would have been nice to see Adam developed as a real relationship for Kurt. Just seeing more of how he felt, and how he was struggling with moving, and being in a new city, and leaving friends and family, and missing Blaine, etc, etc. There's such a rich story there -- but the show, ultimately, was about a high school glee club, not up and coming college kids, and of course, Kurt's story still ended up tied in to Rachel's. (Of course - on the flip side Season 4 gives us such rich material to fanfic around -- so much good fic arose out of this era.)

Season 5 is hard to articulate - there is such a complex variety of things going on - with Finn's Death, the engagement, and all of Rachel and Santana. I wish Kurt would have more of his own individual story line. I know he got the band and Elliott - but what does he really want to do with his life? Again, I do wish we had Glee - the College Years for the full season.

I love the NYC arc - and the exploration of the Klaine dynamic, but I would have seen more the highs there, too. I realize TV needs conflict, and the writers knew where they were going with the story, but I don't think the June story line necessarily worked now that I'm this far out, and I would have liked to see them more navigate the ins and outs of a relationship.

Season 6 I would change less than you think. My biggest thing is that I'd rewrite the entire Klaine part of the Wedding episode. Kurt needs a catalyst (probably the one thing that still bugs me the most) to run back - the writing is just awkward.

But also - Kurt and Blaine don't get a single, private conversation between getting back together and the locker scene in Dreams Come True. I realize it's more about the show winding down - and that scene is essentially their 'happily ever after' moment, but it would have been nice for the show let Kurt (and Blaine) reflect on marriage and taking that next step. But also, having a conversation about how their lives are moving forward when back in New York.

The epilogue was nice, but I would have moved it farther than five years -- and I'm somewhat indifferent about them having kids, but twenty-six feels young for them being dads.

Idk, those are the major things. There are episode to episode minor-ish things, too, I guess. Like why did Kurt give back the tape in Michael? Why did he have to be a jerk to Quinn in On My Way? Stuff like that where I don't agree on the writers' charactierizations.

Day 2: Bikini

Blaine ran across campus with a crumpled up flyer for a band in his hand. This was his only way to contact Kurt aside from running him over on campus again.

Being just over fifteen minutes late to his advisor meeting made Blaine feel like he was standing on a frozen lake wearing nothing but a bikini. Shaking and cold.

He knocked softly on the closed door.

“Come in!”

Blain pushed the door open. His advisor was a tall woman with short blonde hair and warm brown eyes.

“Mr. Anderson, punctual as usual.”

She was teasing him.

“I apologize, my class ran over.”

“Quite alright. Sit.”

Blaine sat down.

“Let’s get down to business shall we?”

His meeting went better than expected. Afterwards he walked to his favorite coffee spot for a well-deserved treat. Blaine ordered a medium drip and chocolate filled cronut.

As he was waiting for his coffee, he bit into his cronut, effectively creating a chocolate frosting mustache.

“Hey, Blaine right?”

And there was Kurt to witness another embarrassing moment of Blaine’s day.

Summary: Kurt has a surprise for Blaine on their wedding day.

Notes: This is part of my Mormon!Klaine universe. It takes place after Out of Eden, which I am still in the process of posting to AO3. It’s among the likely possibilities for their future. It’s sort of a continuation of Proposal and Reservations. Choose The Right/CTR is a Mormon slogan.

Blaine wasn’t expecting a new ring. They were, after all, keeping this a secret for now. It would be kind of obvious if he came back from Salt Lake with a plain metal band on the ring finger of his left hand.

Besides, Kurt wasn’t getting a ring, either. He said he still wanted to wear the one Blaine gave him in Germany, though he would keep it on his left hand when he got back to Ohio. He was already on the Lima bishop's bad side, anyway—though to be honest, he wasn't quite sure the bishop would figure it out. His parents would, though, and that was okay. It would actually be a relief to Blaine for someone who cared about them to know. But Kurt wasn’t telling them yet, because he didn't want his dad to try to talk him into waiting. They were ready for this—well, not ready, exactly, because you never could be ready for all the things a major life change would ask of you. But they wanted this, and they were willing to commit to it, and sometimes that was the closest you could get to being ready.

So Blaine wasn't expecting a new ring. But then, as they sat on the edge of the reflecting pool looking at the south lawn and waiting for their time slot at the temple, Kurt took a small box out of his suit pocket. “I have something for you.”

Blaine’s heart began to skip wildly. He reminded himself to breathe. It wasn't a ring. He had told Kurt he didn't think he should have one because of the uproar it might cause; he wasn't ready to deal with Anderson family drama until he and Kurt were settled a safe distance away from them in California.

But still. He really wanted it to be a ring.

Blaine opened the box. He saw three interlocking silver bands, with Choose the Right etched in tasteful script on the middle one.

Kurt leaned his shoulder against Blaine’s. He lowered his voice to a whisper. “I know you can't go home with a wedding ring. But what if they don't realize it's one? Because it's a CTR ring? Even though it's also about us—because one band stands for you, and one band stands for me, and the band in the middle is the spirit of love that binds us together.”

Blaine couldn't kiss Kurt in the middle of Temple Square. He couldn't even squeeze his hand. But he would be able to do both those things later in front of the county clerk, where they would each have rings to put on each other's fingers—solid reminders of their love, even when they were apart. "I love it,” Blaine said, and then more quietly, “I love you.”

I need someone to write Glee AU where Pavarotti is alive. I mean, can you imagine the changes this little event could make? Like, Kurt wouldn't sing Blackbird dedicating it to Pav → Blaine wouldn't realise his feelings → Blaine wouldn't transfer to McKinley → Kurt would be more likely to get the role of Tony → Kurt would have more credits for his application and might get in NYADA for the fall semester etc. There's so many possibilities! Any ship could happen and all because little bird stayed alive 🤯

Klaine could still happen, but differently.

Kurt could move on from Blaine and become closer with other Warblers and/or Dalton students and maybe start dating someone else. This could also lead to Kurt staying at Dalton.

Kurt coming back to McKinley single, which opens a lot of opportunities for Hevans, Kurtofsky, Puckurt etc. (for each their own)

When in season 3, there's Kurtbastian and Chandler/Kurt - not necessary romantic relationships, but friendships as well. And Blaine might transfer to McKinley or stay at Dalton (there's also a possibility for Seblaine in the background - I'm not a fan, but for each their own). Kurt might be still in close contact with Warblers or they could go completely separate ways.

Blaine staying at Dalton makes it possible for Kurt to get the role of Tony and get more solos, which means he has bigger chances of being accepted in NYADA.

And then season 4, where if Kurt is single there's Kadam and it can start earlier. And Vogue could or could not happen in this timeline. As well as Kurt and Rachel living together and Santana joining them.

And then Kurt's band in season 5. Elliott and Dani could still be there, but their meetings might change. Kelliott is a possibility. Kurt might impress June this time or still not make her think he has a potential. He could meet Maggie and perform as Peter Pan or not.

And then the 6th season - it could become a completely different story!

I just had to share this thought because it was haunting me for months now 😅 I even made a list of some of the possible storylines up until the end of season 3. But I'm not a writer and so I'm sharing this so anyone could use the idea(s). Just, if someone gets inspired by this and writes something, please send me the link to the story! 💜

Smart With Math, Stupid With Love (1/8)

Summary: Kurt just wants to survive Senior Year and maybe get a date with Sam. He doesn't need the new resident "Bad Boy" (more like Boy Band) to cause any complications. But it's hard to ignore a good offer when it comes along. Calculus lessons in exchange for Lessons In Love. God he must be desperate.

Notes: Happy Klaine-iversary and idk some Caesar thing that's happening. *Throws fic*

"Have you seen the new guy?" Rachel is on Kurt the second he steps into the choir room. "He has that James Dean bad boy swagger with classic Hollywood good looks. Completely dreamy. If his voice anywhere near matches his body, he would be the perfect male lead to look at me adoringly while I sing to him."

"I thought you liked Finn?" It's all Kurt can manage under this sudden onslaught of information. 

"I've realized I need someone more committed to keeping up with my talent," Rachel says airily. 

"You mean he's still dating Quinn," Mercedes mutters and Rachel's retort is silenced by the arrival of Mr Schue.

"His name is Blaine Anderson," Tina announces to the group at large, the following day at lunch. "I heard he transferred because he burnt his previous school to the ground." She looks thrilled. 

"So he's an arsonist." Rachel tosses her head dismissively. 

"That don't impress you much?" Santana asks drily."So he's got the firepower, but has he got the touch ."

"I bet he does, have you seen him?" Rachel says. "He and I would have the cutest vaguely Eurasian looking babies."

Kurt chokes. 

"And his butt," Tina sighs. "It looks like it's been sculpted out of marble." 

"I need to have a conversation with you two about your priorities," Kurt says.

"Don't worry, Kurt, he's not actually an arsonist," Artie chips in unexpectedly. "He was just having an affair with his art teacher." It's his turn to look dreamy. "What a legend."

"Artie, ew." Tina slaps at his shoulder while Rachel launches into a lecture about the inappropriateness of teacher-student relationships. Mercedes coughs something that sounds suspiciously like “Mr Schue.”

Kurt internally prays for silence.

Kurt and Blaine could easily not have met on a staircase in high school. They could have met a few years later in college instead.

This story is AU from within 2x06 ("Never Been Kissed"), with many of the broad strokes of canon remaining except where I thought they would be different because of the AU or other factors. It takes place in Blaine's first year of college, starting about a year from now. There are some spoilers through 3x22 (“Goodbye”).

I finally put together all of those mini fics I wrote for the AU + Trope +Prompt Game. They were supposed to be drabbles - but ha, didn't exactly end up that way. 😂

I'll keep the prompts open as of now , if any one else is interested in playing. Also am open to trying other pairings/fandoms, not just Klaine/Glee, as long as I'm familiar with them :) RWRB, anyone? 😉

Hello! For the writer’s ask game: 🍓 🍬 🌿 🏜️

🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction?  well I was introduced to fanfiction as a concept when my cousins and I started writing stories about a certain boy band in middle school and posting them to quizilla. I don't think I even encountered the word "fanfiction" while doing that; we just read and wrote stories about these band members, mostly about them being romantically involved with girls who were very similar to ourselves, but also putting them in other situations. I got into Glee fic specifically because of Klaine. I didn't start writing Glee fic until Blaine showed up and I started shipping Klaine; I don't think I really read any Glee fic before then either.

🍬 ⇢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character I mean, I feel like Glee has existed for long enough that every opinion has been said about every character. I guess what strikes me sometimes is how vehemently I hate Santana in the early seasons. She's such a favorite character of so many people, and I get why, especially as she gains depth and grows over the course of the show...but in the beginning she's just the worst.

🌿 ⇢ give some advice on writer's block and low creativity Oof, I mean, I haven't been writing lately, so...In my experience, if you're really determined to finish writing a story but you don't have ~inspiration~ for it, you can take sort of a technical approach by looking at the story structurally and figuring out what has to happen next to further the narrative (like, "then these characters need to have some type of falling out so they can be separated for a while. What could the source of that argument be? What are things in their personalities or backstories that could cause disagreement?"), instead of waiting for an idea to just ~come to you~. Another thing that's worked for me is that if there's necessary stuff that I don't feel like writing, I can just use temporary filler and come back to it. Like writing "[then they have a convo about the setlist before moving to the next scene]" or just doing the dialogue without worrying about speech tags and description of the scene. That will help me get the ball rolling again, and coming back later to add the details in feels less overwhelming than doing it all at once.

🏜️ ⇢ what's your favourite type of comment to receive on your work? much like @special-bc-ur-part-of-it, I love when readers pick up on themes or ideas that I'm trying to express in a story. Reading a comment and being like "omg you GET IT" is so gratifying. I also love when readers notice things in my writing that I wasn't even aware of - stuff that I might have subconsciously included, and by pointing it out the reader helps me understand my own story better.
