I just finished Banana Fish and all I can say is holy shit. It was amazing. I’m a sucker for a beautifully tragic story that has people in love and doesn’t let them simply be in love. I was doing fine until I read Garden of Light, but seeing how much Eiji cared about Ash even 7 years later ruined me. The fact that Sing still felt guilt about Lao too… it was an amazing story.

Unpopular Opinion #3- Banana Fish

I don't know of this is really an unpopular opinian but why the hell did Sing have end up in a relationship with an 18 year old Akira,whom he knew since she was 13 and he was 21?! Hell no,this is wrong as hell like one of the main themes of Banana Fish is how horrible grooming/pedophilia etc is. It doesn't matter if she was 18 when they got togheter, it still is predatory and very messed up.

I have to say that honestly it's one of the only anime I'm glad there's little to no women because of what happened to Yut Lung's mom and what happened to Jessica in the manga. Also because what happened to the guys is the awfullest thing I have ever seen.

banana fish fans who say "oh but I cant view ash and eiji in a sexual relationship 🥺🥺🥺" "ash has too much trauma for that 🥺🥺🥺" over those suggestive ish pictures of ash through eiji's photos in garden of light or angel eyes I can't remember annoy me so much

a lot of the time it's just that they cannot fathom the thought of someone healing. of an assault survivor being a whole person. maybe it's because the argument is so closely personal to me but it genuinely feels insulting to hear that 99% of the time the argument is followed by some sort of straight up degrading comment towards sa victims. theyre my favorite illustrations perhaps in the whole series because they show the process. that's a lot of personal bias on my side but I genuinely wonder. how do they not see the beauty of this. of ash reclaiming his beauty and posing for a camera he consented to. of him reclaiming his pleasure. his own image and body. his nudity and comfort. it's a story of healing being told through a series of candids taken by someone he trusts and loves enough to share these bits of himself with. do they genuinely not see it
