James Barnes was there, a Thompson submachine gun nestled in the crook of his arm. It was pointed at us, and his finger flitted nervously above the trigger.

"Put down that briefcase, lady," he grunted, "or else I'll shoot it right out of your pretty little hands."

I knew right away that he wasn't joking. Natasha must have felt the same way because Stark's attaché hit the ground a moment later.

"Now step away from it," Barnes ordered, giving a sideways flick with the tommy’s muzzle. He flinched as he made the motion, probably from my earlier hit. I hoped that gunshot wound hurt like a bitch. We did as he wanted, though. He stared between us. "Who do you work for? CIA? FBI? You ain’t Brits, and the Krauts wouldn’t dare."

I said nothing. Neither did Natasha. Barnes pointed the tommy at me and fired a couple rounds into the dead grass near my feet.

“That jog your memory, pal?"

The only thing it jogged was my patience. What did he think? That I’d go over my employment agreement with him just because he played the guns game? I’d kept quiet under worse odds. But then Natasha suddenly stepped forward. Barnes immediately pointed the rifle at her, but she calmly gestured for him to back off. She had a slight smirk on her lips.

“Ne strelyat',” she said in an accent I hadn’t heard from her in years. “Moscow sends us, tovarishch. All on Bezukhov’s orders. Now drop that gun or you'll end up getting yourself a free pass to Kolyma. We’re on the same side here."

Barnes didn’t drop it, but the statement threw him long enough for me to pull out my own pistol. I fired two shots in rapid succession, not aiming to hit, just trying to buy us time. Natasha appeared on my left with her Makarov at the ready. Still, Barnes had the Thompson, and thus the trump card in the weapons distribution. A mere twitch of his finger and that submachine gun would pelt us worse than the Swiss did their cheese.

"You ain’t no more Russian than I’m a cotton picker!" he sneered, leveling the tommy back at us. "One last time! Who ya workin for?!"

"A guy with a really bad temper," I said, and shot.

More bonding happens between them and spidey, and by the time they find Tony in a bunker, he’s basically on their team entirely- however Tony was actively escaping, and when they walked up to the massive vault door spider-man hears AC/DC and gets weepy like “Mr stark!!!” And straight up busts the door down and goes tearing thru the facility before the rest can stop him. Cue emotional reunion, where he rips off his mask, shocked pikachu face, and Sam is just like “holy shit he really is an infant”.

Yelena could say all she wanted how lame Christmas was, but that was a lie. She couldn’t wait for it all, for the presents, the food and the time she will get to spend with Natasha. It was a week till’ Christmas now, they decorated the tree - it was all going well. Until Natasha came up with another idea, so called “Secret Santa”.

This year the group was smaller, most went to their families or had other activities, leaving Natasha, Yelena, Wanda and Maria all to themselves.

“Okay, so…” Natasha started speaking, she sat on the floor in her red and black pyjama. “You have to draw a card, with a name. That’s who you’re buying the gift to and vice versa.” She explained, as Yelena was unfamiliar with the tradition.

“I go first!” Wanda jumped in her seat as her hand went into the small box, she drew a card and looked at it for a moment before speaking.

“Natasha! I have you, so I guess you have me…” Wanda was more uncertain now, she knew it would be tough if she drew Natasha’s name, as Yelena was unfamiliar with her or Maria, so the gift buying is harder.

Yelena just glanced at Natasha, unsure to what she is supposed to do now.

“I-I have you then?” Yelena turned to Maria.

“Yes…Don’t worry, it’s most important to have fun, I’m sure you’ll do your best.” Maria smiled lightly as she glanced at Natasha.

“Okay, so two days for gift hunt and I will get us matching hats!” Wanda clapped her hands as she tried to keep the atmosphere far from uncomfortable.

Yelena browsed in different shops in the area, she felt uneasy alone, but at the same time didn’t want Nat to intervene in her shopping, as she was literally dating Maria.

She walked into millions of clothing stores, food stores and ones that are a mix of everything. Until she found a place she actually enjoyed being in — a store full of weapons.

It felt close to what she knew — knifes, guns and even bows. She was familiar with most of the weapons, but her attention was caught by one specific object, a small knife, it handle was made specifically to be more comfortable, also it had a small heart carved in it.

Yelena’s eyes scanned it for a moment before she was rudely welcomed by the store employee.

“Hey there…” A middle aged man approached her, stood way too close with his hands on his hips. “What can I do for you, sweetheart?”

A small grin creeped up onto his face, Yelena scoffed. Entitled men was everything she had to deal with her whole life, not anymore.

“I don’t need help.” She mumbled, making her russian accent even more thick.

“Oh, come on! You like the knife? I can show you how to use it.” The stupid smirk did not leave his face for a second, Yelena just grabbed the knife and headed to buy it, losing the guy in the crowd.

She left the store happy, she finally had her gift, but it didn’t feel like enough. She felt as if Maria deserved better, she should buy more.

So she did. Yelena entered one of the clothing stores as she looked though the shirts, she didn’t quite know what Maria style was, so she just looked for something simple.

Her eyes got stuck on a plain shirt, with four letters on it — BAMF. What the hell is BAMF?

“Excuse me…” Yelena approached a short lady, a worker in the store, she looked harmless and kind, so Yelena picked her. “What does this mean?” Yelena pointed at the shirt she took.

“BAMF?” The woman smiled, she didn’t laugh or scold Yelena, she smiled as she had a sympathetic look on her face. “Bad Ass Mother Fucker.” The woman’s face turned slightly red as she spoke the vulgar words quietly.

“Thank you.” Yelena nodded and glanced at the sticker on the woman’s shirt. “Thank you, Olivia.”

It was the day of gift giving, Yelena was nervous, she barely slept and only coffee helped. So many scenarios crossed her mind — What if Maria hates her gift? What if it’s a terrible gift? What if they pull a prank on her and what if her box is empty?

But she had to shove all that aside and packed her gift, the four were seated in the living room, all in matching Santa’s hats, which Wanda had bought them.

“Alright, who opens their gift first?” Wanda glanced around, waiting for either Maria or Natasha to take the wheel and decide.

“How about us?” Natasha smiled and

glanced at Yelena, her and Wanda exchanged their boxes.

Natasha was eager to prove Yelena it was fine, the presents weren’t perfect and the boxes weren’t empty.

Both of the redheads opened their boxes as excitement grew on their faces. Natasha got a new leather jacket and a photo in a frame — a picture of her and Maria on their first date.

Wanda on the other hand was given socks, red ones with white stripes on them, like a candy cane. To that was a book, which Yelena was unfamiliar with, but the cover was colourful.

The two hugged, which made Yelena scream internally… Did she have to hug Maria too?

She just glanced at her box, now her gift doesn’t seem enough. She didn’t think twice about what she bought, maybe she should’ve asked Natasha for help after all.

“Yelena?” Natasha’s voice was warm and gentle as she encountered her sister to hand over the box to Maria. “Now it’s your turn.”

Yelena glanced at Maria, but she didn’t hand her the box, she instead got up with it and left the room.

How could she think that gift was good for even a second? It was embarrassing.

The three were left in silence for a moment, uncertain as to what they were supposed to do now. Natasha was planning on going, but as she got up, Maria stopped her.

“I got it, you guys can…make some popcorn?” Maria was improvising, but she felt bad for Yelena, like it was her fault that the girl got scared off.

“Masha—“ Natasha started, but seeing the look in Maria’s eyes she just nodded and went in silence to the kitchen with Wanda.

Yelena was alone, in her room. It was pretty small, she kept almost everything packed in boxes, she never unpacked in case Natasha got her own flat. In case she wanted to take her too. Besides the Tower never felt like home, she sat all day long in her room, didn’t know anyone that well, except her sister.

A gentle knock on her door made her jump as she slid the gift under her bed.

“Yelena? It’s me, Maria…” The door was still closed, Maria didn’t want to invade Yelena’s privacy, she had a choice to let her in or not.

“What do you want?” Yelena’s voice was low and cold, but it was all a facade, a facade Maria knew too well, she have seen it before, in Natasha.

“To talk, that’s all… You don’t have to let me in if you don’t want to, we can just talk though the door.”

The door opened soon after, Yelena looked up at Maria who was slightly taller. Maria gave her a reassuring smile as she walked in and the door was shut after her.

“What’s wrong?” Maria glanced at Yelena before sitting on the bed. “Why did you run?”

“Why do you care?” The blonde scoffed, almost mockingly.

“Yelena…You can talk to us, to me. I just want you to know that.” Maria sighed. “Natasha trusts me, you trust her, right?”

Yelena sat on the bed next to Maria as she breathed out loudly.

“I can’t give you my gift. It simply…sucks.”

“It…sucks?” Maria frowned.

“Yeah…I’m sorry…”

“Don’t be sorry, come on, I’m sure I’ll love it.”

Yelena sighed, Maria had a determined look on her face, so she gave up, too tired to banter with her. The blinde pulled out the box from under the bed and handed it to Maria.

Maria looked at the box curiously and opened it slowly, as she took out a small black box - there was a small knife in there, that fits right into Maria’s fist.

“See? I told you.”

“What? The knife? It’s a great gift, very…”

“Practical.” Yelena finished her sentence.

“Yes, practical.”

Maria nodded with a smile as she took a notice of a folded material in the box. It was a folded shirt, with four letters on it, four letters she did not understand.

“What’s BAMF?” Maria glanced at Yelena.

“The lady in the store said it means Bad Ass Mother Fucker.” Yelena said with zero expression, even though she was giggling on the inside.

“I- You think I’m Badass?” Maria raised her brows as she looked amused at the blonde.

“Yeah, I mean, you’re the right hand of SHIELD.” Yelena smiled lightly.

Maria placed the shirt back into the box, she didn’t intend to make Yelena uncomfortable so she kept her distance. She remembered well how jumpy and anti-touching Natasha was.

“So, are you ready to open up my gift?”

Yelena glanced at Maria nervously as the woman handed her the box, smiling encouragingly.

Yelena took a deep breath in as she opened her box, inside was a green vest, similar to the one she owned and gave to Natasha.

The vest she was looking at had more black details in it, the green color was very much toned. Yelena couldn’t hold back her smile as she looked at the vest.

“I gotta say, Natasha helped me out a bit, she talked a lot about how the vest was the first thing you got yourself, but you were willing to give that up to her.” Maria smiles lightly at the memory. “So, you like it?”

Yelena nodded with a smile on her face, she tried to tone her emotions, but it was like a wave of excitement washing over her. She moved closer to Maria and wrapped her arms around the woman. Maria was slightly shocked at the sudden touch, but she hugged the blonde back.

“I’ll take that as a yes.”

Peter Parker is sixteen. He works at sister Margret's. He spend most of his day as spider-man, avoiding his past. Peter has many regrets in life. Not stopping the robber who killed his uncle, befriending Wade, stabbing that guy when he was five who turned out to be his trainer. But his biggest regret right now was somehow getting in SHIELD’s radar.

As one thing leads to another Peter's past is slowly creeping up on him and he doesn’t know that yet.

The Soldier’s understanding of the world begins to unravel after he completes a mission and finds a helpless and shivering kitten. Unable to leave, knowing the frail thing will die in the elements, the Soldier makes a choice...

Overwhelmed and now hiding from his handler's, things only get more complicated when he lays eyes on a picture of a familiar blonde face.

The Soldier can not risk contact, capture, and the inevitable return to Hydra and captivity would bring. He may remember Steve Rogers, but he also remembers Captain America. Similarly enhanced, the Captain would have the advantage, the Soldier’s movement would be limited with the kitten’s safety to consider.

He’ll seek out Steve Rogers, who seems to feature in nearly every memory with Bucky, but he’ll be cautious. Can hopefully glean from the exposure more about the time before Bucky – before he – was presumed dead in a war. From before Steve’s Bucky became Hydra’s, time stuttering by till the Soldier was born.

May 11, night - Stark Expo opening. Blood toxicity - 19%.

May 12, 9:00 am - 3:30 pm - Tony at the Senate Armed Services Committee hearings.

May 13, evening:

Tony is back home and has a video conference in 4 hours. Blood toxicity - 24%. 362 days of Expo left.

Tony (unofficially for now) appoints Pepper as CEO of SI.

May 14 - Tony officially transfers the management of the company to Pepper.

Note: confirmation of 2010 from S.H.I.E.L.D. dossier. The Avengers (deleted scene).

Between May 14 and May 23 - Tony hires Natasha as his new PA.

May 23 - Tony in Monaco. Vanko attacks him on the race track. Blood toxicity - 53%.

Morning - after ~10 hours of doing something somewhere Rhodes finally brings Mark II to Edwards Air Force Base.

Tony eats donuts in a donut. Fury and Natasha give him a pep talk and lithium dioxide.

Hammer brings Ivan not his bird and notices that he makes drones, not suits.

USAF calls in Hammer to outfit stolen Mark II with his weapons.

Afternoon - Fury tells Tony that Howard was the founder of S.H.I.E.L.D. and gives him a chest of Howard's things.

Evening - Hammer gets his hands on Mark II and turns it into "War Machine".

Tony looks through his father's notes and receives his message recorded in 1973.

May 31:

Morning - Tony goes to apologize to Pepper and finds the "Key to the Future".

Afternoon - Tony (re)discovers a new element and orders components for a particle accelerator. Meanwhile, he drills more holes into his house, eventually turning it into a piece of Swiss cheese.

June 1:

343 days of Stark Expo left.

Morning - Tony builds his particle accelerator. Coulson is reassigned to New Mexico.

Note: As we've established in Thor's timeline, its events take place in November 2011. Not May/June 2010. I could do some logical gymnastics and stretch it to 2010 (which would already create a mess), but there's no way it could be in May/June.

Afternoon - Tony finishes the particle accelerator and synthesizes the new element at home.

Note: mention of 2010 again.

Evening - Vanko finishes his suit and the drones.

6:20 pm - Vanko calls Tony. Tony heads to New York in the new Mark VI.

40 minutes is most probably an exaggeration, since it is unlikely that Tony could get from Malibu to Flushing in less than 40 minutes. In any case, Tony didn't have time for anything else, especially considering that he needed time to assemble his new suit.

7-9 pm - Hammer and Vanko at the Stark Expo. Tony and Rhodey fight Vanko and defeat him. He blows himself and the Expo up. Tony saves Pepper and 8-year-old Peter Parker. Pepperony's first kiss.

Considering that other things tell us it's been 19 days since Pepper became CEO, Tony's "a week" line is an exaggeration. And Pepper plays along, just like she did with 12% in The Avengers.

I could write a whole post about why it could not be just a week (from Expo opening to the fight) as it's stated in other timelines, but I'll just give you one question to think about: how many days Ivan would need to build all those drones, a new reactor and a suit? Probably not 2.

A week later - Fury gives Tony Natasha's assessment of him and offers him a position as a consultant at S.H.I.E.L.D. Tony accepts.

Mid June - Senator Stern awards Tony and Rhodey with medals.

The Consultant

Second half of 2010:

The World Security Counsel still supports the Avengers Initiative at this point. But they want The Abomination on the team. Coulson and Sitwell send Tony to sabotage the transfer between General Ross and S.H.I.E.L.D. He succeeds, and Blonsky remains in prison.

After that, the WSC loses interest in the Avengers Initiative.

Saw the last ask you got and just had two throw my two cents into the conversation. First of all, a big Yeesss to all of what anon said, like smart Peter and bamf Peter for the win. But also strong Peter? Like very very strong Peter? Like, it's canon that Spiderman is stronger than all of the Avengers, even the Hulk in some comics. But then there are so many fic where he gets pushed around by Cap, Bucky and Nat during sparing and fights and stuff? Wtf? Natasha? Sure she's badass but no amount of technique and martial arts can help you take someone down who's like enhanced over all, has a sixth sense warning for danger and is several times stronger than Captain America. You don't just knock someone on their back who can lift a flipping building just cause you have more experience and know several fighting styles like how should that work? Apart from the fact that Peter is smart and won't just run into the fight with someone he knows has more experience than himself. Yeah ... I needed to get that off my chest lmao

ABSOLUTELY yes, I was always wondering like WTF HOW like how is that even possible if he is super strong?😭how Nat can knock him off, even with her techniques, I thinks it’s really REALLY hard to win against spiderman, with all his senses, his powers and abilities. He would feel that she would do the punch before the punch itself, so she could win only by confusing his senses but idk how she or any other avenger would do that. I thing their advantages are 1) experience and techniques (but that alone is not enough to win against spiderman) 2) team..I think that is the only way they could win against spiderman. Steve + Nat + Clint against Peter — there is a high chance they could win (with proper plan) maybe Tony or Hulk could win against him, but not the Nat or Clint.

...And a Happy Hanukkat

Here is my Winterhawk Wonderland 2023 contribution! Dearest @deformed-globule asked for hurt/comfort (possibly post-mission), handmade gifts (possibly knitted), and BAMF!Clint, as well as a sappy/happy ending.

The combination of hurt/comfort and sappy ending makes for a hell of a tone shift, but stick with me folks and I'll make sure you are rewarded for the somewhat dark start.

Excerpt:

“Quiet, Soldier,” the chief Hydra doctor croons as three more huddle around, enjoying the show.  “The more you struggle, the messier this will be.”

They’re all wearing goggles, surgical masks and caps, and waterproof aprons, so they’re sure as fuck prepared for this to get messy.  Bucky spits a mouthful of blood at the chief doctor nonetheless, red spattering across his Hydra-grey surgical getup, and his eyes narrow.

“Start with the tongue,” he hisses vindictively, and a fourth Hydra doctor moves in, scalpel at the ready.

Bucky’s focus narrows to that slim blade.  He can’t look away as it gets closer and closer.  His mind flashes with images of everything he’s losing — Steve’s steadfast friendship, Natasha’s stealthy affection, Sam’s friendly rivalry, Bruce’s quiet companionship, Thor’s booming laughter, Tony’s sarcastic caretaking, and — most of all, Clint.  

Clint’s easy camaraderie, his sunshine smile, the way he sits shoulder-to-shoulder with Bucky, quiet and undemanding, Lucky and Alpine draped across both their laps, when Bucky is having a bad day.  Clint has been the brightest thing in Bucky’s life since he recovered from Hydra’s programming, and Bucky has been too scared to really see where it could go, and now it’s too late —

And he shouldn’t have let thoughts of Clint get a handhold, because he’s hallucinating now, his gaze sliding off the blade to the goggles of the scalpel-wielding Hydra doctor, and as he meets his glance for a moment he thinks he sees the sunny sky-blue of Clint’s beautiful eyes.

The blade flashes, almost faster than Bucky can track it, and a line of red appears on the throats of the three other doctors.  Their eyes widen behind the protective goggles, nitrile-gloved hands coming up to try to stem the flow, but it happened too quickly for them to even cry out.  

There’s four rapid thuds of a silenced weapon, so quick it almost sounds like one long stutter of noise, and in his peripheral vision Bucky sees the four guards slump to the floor.

“Heya, Bucky,” Clint says, ripping the mask and goggles off his face.  There’s a bruise at the crest of his cheekbone and his lower lip is swollen and bloody.  “This place sucks, wanna get out of here?”
