To support climate action we must protect the whales.

I’m always asked which area of marine I would like to go into for a career,

the answer is always and will always be cetacean behaviour and conservation.

Why?

Cetaceans, particularly the great whales, bring stability to our ever-changing climate.

When whales dive into the depths of the ocean, they then return to the surface water to breathe. Upon returning to the surface, whales release enormous faecal plumes, containing limiting but essential nutrients that stimulate the growth of phytoplankton.

Phytoplankton, an organism forming the basis of all, marine food, is essential for life on Earth. These microscopic organisms act as carbon fixers by sequestration carbon from the atmosphere to be utilised in their bodily structures. Reducing the number of phytoplankton is undeniably going to cause higher quantities of greenhouse gas emissions remaining in the atmosphere and as a result warming the climate.

Whales' defecation acts as a natural fertiliser in our oceans and is essential in the growth of phytoplankton thus combatting climate change.

Without whales, phytoplankton numbers will reduce meaning greenhouse gas emissions are no longer removed from the atmosphere through these carbon fixers. This creates an increasingly warmer climate, one uninhabitable and one that will impact ALL life on Earth.

Our future lies in our oceans, particularly baleen whales who store astonishing amounts of carbon throughout their 100-year lives. Even when these individuals die, the carbon remains locked in the dead body for centuries to come.

Whales face many threats.

Whaling and climate change are impacting their populations the most.

We must protect whale populations from the threats we have caused

Not only will it benefit whales, but it will benefit all marine life, terrestrial life and even us, humans.

Whales are not only incredible species but a natural solution to climate change one that deserves to be protected.

Not a dungeon, but a cross section of a whale, reanimated by carcinostic necromancy.

The idea for this drawing bubbled up as soon as I sketched the whales in Koto Meet, last week. "Wonder what's inside those whales?" So I found out.

A whale seems like it would make for a good adventure location---but I wanted these whales to be about an actual humpback's size. And I guess a freight truck isn't quite a dungeon?

So this is more a monster manual entry, really:

What? (An undead whale.)

Why? (Glorified cargo haulers.)

Defenses? (Giant predatory barnacles, solidified balleen, shark-mouth butt.)

Weaknesses? (A magic pearl makes them go; take it out and the whale rots. Or take out the crab pilot.)

Adventure hooks? (Carrying important human captives; the whale's ghost wants her body back; the shark butt wants revenge.)

Note too that regular gryphons already scale the eagle up to match the lion, so a hummingbird whale could be a thing, zipping across the waves and occasionally slamming its fifty foot beak into the water, plucking tasty morsels from the sea. Peehaps it uses the beak like straw, slurping up plankton, tgroat ballooning before it spits water like a super-soaker, krill filtered by a balleen tongue. Or does it indicate some new, equally fantastic flora with skyscraper sized blossoms to sustain such a beast, glittering in all the colors of sea and sky as it flits among them like a supersonic cruise ship?

It annoys me unreasonably when you want to ask people "what bird and what mammal would make the worst gryphon" as a fun thought exercise, and people with no joy and no imagination always interpret it as "a gryphon that sucks, is physically impossible, and would hate being alive", and - being predictable and lacking in imagination - always, always answer with "a hummingbird and a blue whale lol".

Like come on. Why do you have to suck the fun out of everything. Why not use a fraction of imagination and delightful whimsy. Imagine the combination of a mouse and a sparrow. That creature would be merciless, burtal, absolutely determined to get into your trash and has the power of both wings and hands to do its will. Or a crow and a cat - that thing is smart enough to fuck with people and not afraid to do it. Imagine the ungodly shriek of the noble fox-seagull, also determined to get into your trash.

A gryphon that is a combination of a kangaroo and a cassowary. The only proof we have of a loving god is the fact that those things do not exist. If hell is real, it's full of them. That thing can't fly, but it will run you down, it will kill you, and you will look stupid the whole entire time you're dying.

Why would the first thing that pops into your mind at the words "the worst gryphon" automatically be "a gryphon that hates being alive". Can you not picture a gryphon that fucking loves being alive, and has both the power and the will to make it everyone else's problem.

So I finished Feste last night, and was blown away as usual by your writing, and I was just wondering: how did you develop your writing style? It's this very unique mix of hilarious absurd/surrealism and then just raw emotional impact. Also, I'm curious about your writing process -- do you do outline at all or just come up with an idea and jump in?

I was described once as a “balleen whale of media” - I just swallow everything and filter it out through my bristly teeth. I read a great deal as a kid, and although I don’t do it as much now I’m always fascinated by new types of storytelling, new and innovative stories, and by genre defining works. My writing style is just a mix of a billion works I’ve read or seen. For everything I write I can list off ten influences - Feste’s influences are extremely obvious, but it’s also carried very deeply by person centered and emotional YA novels. MATDB was a direct pastiche of romcoms, the new thing I’m working on is springboarded from film noir and urban fantasy, etc. The aburdism/surrealism is because I have a few favorite books that are absurdist and surrealist, although I’ve seen a few people calling Feste absurd/surrealist and I’m not sure if I would say that.

I think you’re more interested in how I developed tone, though? And that’s just because I tend to use fiction to explore things I’ve been thinking about. My mental state is extremely far from Martin’s in that fic, thank god, but I enjoy creating a consistent and coherent thematic and emotional core. I’m always surprised when people say my writing is emotional or impactful - I just mostly tend to write about what’s been on my mind or themes I care about, because I like honesty and I want people to feel seen, recognized, and understood in my works. I want to talk about issues that people deal with, even the ugly ones. The comedy is because my work would be too depressing without it. Also, in real life, I’m the kind of person who can’t resist cracking a joke every two seconds. If it isn’t fun, like, what’s the point?

I don’t plan, plot, or outline. I wrote about 1/3 of Feste and then I was like “hmm this should probably like, go somewhere”. I think about 2/3rds of the way through it I wrote like an extremely skimpy bullet point outline of what I want to do, and then I forgot I wrote it, and I did something completely different anyway. C’est la vi. Feste happened because I was listening to S4 and I was like “I really want to see what the fuck Martin’s up to AND I want to bring back ‘workplace from hell’ that I kind of explored in BBC and TotA.” My favorite methods for deciding what to do is story jamming with my friends, coming up with a bunch of jokes (thanks Hannah, Emily, Jack, Aisha and Martin, all of whom are funnier than me) and then writing a story around the jokes. Not exactly coherent planning. I think this is going to bite me in the ass one day - the story I’m writing now is casefic detective mystery, which you absolutely HAVE to plot, but here we go again I guess.

Balleen whales also consume entire bait balls of anchovies, smelt, herring or sardines. They food looks so small because whales are so huge.

I lost the post on my dash where this would have been a fun addition but these are the krill that blue whales eat! Some people think krill are like nearly microscopic or something but they are very decently sized shrimps

actually i think being a bacterium inside a balleen whales stomach or whatever that post said woukd be a very peaceful existence and you woykd get to see the bacteria cities built on their earth which is the whale and you get to learn how geometry works on the surface of that “planet” and maybe such and stuff like that

I thought about drawing foods for this TA for a long time. Writing about food underwater is hard. Also, writing about a society where terrestrial plants do not exist is ALSO very hard. So here’s a thing.

TLDR:

Food underwater is bland, usually raw, and fancy presentation is reserved for slow-moving fish merfolk/occasions. Also, as fish merfolk you can eat your inner spirit and offer your outer spirit to be eaten by your friends. Above water, everyone eats bugs, bug spit, and many varieties of molds (and sometimes also seafood). Also, when you die, your body will be made as fertilizer for new molds.

Also you can be arrested and killed for drinking tea. /TLDR

Food underwater is typically very bland, and almost all of it is served raw, although there are methods to took underwater, they are expensive.

Any sort of “prepared food”, i.e. anything that isn’t a squid on a stick, or raw fish, is difficult to assemble underwater, given that the materials that need to be gathered in a layered meal, plus the utensils/tools to craft said meal, means that any sort of “restaurant” has to be stationary and in a stable location. A very popular substance that is used to keep food “together” is sap, which is produced from insects above water. Sap does not dilute underwater, and it can be made into many dishes, like jello, and merfolk can “drink” it underwater.

You’ll only witness special food presentations like this in reefs or kelp forests or other stationary areas, and chefs there are highly paid, well respected. Typically, a well prepared meal for ceremonies such as Weddings, Deaths, a Seeding, and they are almost undoubtedly beholden to Coldbloods.

Warmbloods do not see a huge point in banquet style food, as for a long time, they were not allowed near areas where stationary areas for food making was easy. Due to their long travels in open water, many would find it a bother carry the essential ingredients/tools to craft elegant meals. Furthermore, a being with the mass of a whale must eat a LOT, and putting so much effort into making “something pretty” for such small energy intake would be a long, expensive waste. Plus, many warmbloods have little means to barter in coral reefs cafes.

Times have changed, and conflict between merfolk species has evened out, cultures are mixing, middleclass is growing, and the more smaller whale warmbloods are experimenting extravagant coldblood meals, but those such as balleen whales (who feed mostly on krill) that would be exceptionally rare.

Many foreigners ask the question about consuming familiars, for example, “what happens if I eat a squid in front of a squid mer-person”.

In short: Eating your own familiar, is typically to honor the demiurge Hylebog, the broodmother of all familiars and descendants.

Food Above water:

There is no land in this world (Deign). There is no place for plants to grow, therefore, crops like grains, fruit trees, legumes, nut trees, seeds, do not exist. This means foods like fruit or drinks, teas, breads, rice along with many other things do not exist in this world.

There exists a very small amount of SOME plants. In some very SELECT upper class of the government, there are private gardens where there is rumor that there are some growth of plants of origins of unknown. It is illegal for anyone other than the Matriarch government to consume any sort of plants, due to their rarity. In fact, anyone other than Matriarchy found consuming or owning plant matter commits a crime can be assigned to life sentence in vassalage or immediate termination.

As a side note. This also means that opiates do not exists (smoking drugs) however, many medicinal uses can be found with the huge variety of fungus that exist.

In place of plants, mold has thrived. There are THOUSANDS of kinds of edible fungus and molds growing in Deign, each one with different tastes, different calorie contents, and textures. Fungus is used as a stable for flavor, secretions from certain molds are used as sweetener or paste… they can be brewed into teas, used in soup, baked into loaves similar to bread, and hardened and eaten as candy. Cordyceps are a particular favorite, and there are “Corpse Gardens in the Republic” where dead bodies of insects and residents are sent to be used as as material to grow Cordycep crops. Reproduction via spores is easy, and does not require pollination, there are very few small insects here.

However, there are many large insects.

The insects in Deign are massive, used to pull floating airships and chariots. They have a high protein content, and there are a vast consumable variety, and residents can consume adults, as well as larvae, pupae and eggs.

Seafood is another source of protein, although less common. With unstable laws between air and Ocean Nations, the Republic people have only a few fishing grounds that they are officially allowed to hunt.  There is a huge trading system between the Republic and the Ocean Nations in terms of trading “Sap” which is a bug spit, undissolvable in water, and one of the few substances merfolk can “drink” underwater, and seafood. Therefore, there are lots of Sap farms floating like green blimps all over the skies by floating Opus domes.

Do they know they're eating when they do that? Or does every balleen whale just think they eat by sucking magic water in and out and that all the other animals with normal teeth are weird, like "Just eat the magic water, guys. Jeez. It's right here."

Pisco is among my favorite marine formations currently known. A perfect example of the fantastic fauna of the Miocene. Enormous birds with false teeth, countless penguins in what is now Peru, balleen whales the size of dolphins mingling with enormous sharks and raptorial sperm whales. Chuck in some weirdos like beaked whales and whatever the hell Odobenocetops was, sea turtels, seals and two different species of saltwater gharials. Oh and lets not forget the marine sloths

The #paleostream just started a diorama challenge, I did an example during stream. It shows the Pisco formation.

no. no there is no orca here. thats about as far as you can get from an orca. orcas are giant dolphin, completely different from whales, and while cachalot may be similar, balleen whales absolutely aren't.

one of my hot takes is that it is totally defensible to make fun of a youtube video for the thumbnail without watching it. generally i think it is defensible to make fun or make assumptions about something because of its marketing because that's what the marketing is for. obviously if you want to have a super in depth serious opinion on something you have to experience it but "don't judge a book by its cover" only really applies to high stakes situatons where misjudging the thing oculd have real consequences.

Birds lost the ability to grow enamel, so they can't grow regular teeth. However... if you're a duck trying to grab slippery plants under water, teeth would sure be helpful.

So they evolved something called lamellae, which are hard extensions of their bills, as teeth substitutes. They act a bit like balleen in a whale, so ducks, geese, and swans can grab a tasty bite without swallowing a mouthful of pond water with it.

Also useful as combs for keeping their feathers nice and neat!
