South American cougar (Puma concolor concolor) by Gregory "Slobirdr" Smith Via Flickr: One of the most wanted species on my list while leading tours was to see a mountain lion. This was my very last scheduled Naturalist Journeys' tour and it was to one of my favorite places - Patagonia. Trackers in the area that abuts Torres del Paine National Park have been able to track some of the fifteen pumas that roam a private ranch that abuts this park. This is Sol and her single 1yr+ old cub. Many more photos to follow of this now not-so-elusive species to follow...

BOTD: Aleutian Tern
Photo: Gregory "Slobirdr" Smith
"An uncommon bird, nesting around the Bering Sea and nearby waters, including much of the southern Alaskan coast and Aleutian Islands. May associate with Arctic Tern, but is far less numerous. Its habits have not been thoroughly studied. Its winter range was completely unknown until the late 1980s; now it is known that many Aleutian Terns spend the winter near the Equator in the western Pacific."

Meet the ʻIʻiwi (Drepanis coccinea)! It lives in tropical forests across the Hawaiian islands, where it sips on nectar and plays an important role in pollination. Its skinny decurved bill is specialized for fitting into and reaching nectar from tube-shaped flowers. Photo: Gregory "Slobirdr" Smith, CC BY-SA 2.0, flickr https://www.instagram.com/p/CPUk3x8grFA/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Creature Awaits #64:
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )

Snow Petrel
Scientific Name: Pagodroma nivea
Region: Antarctica, primarily
Size: About a 30"–31" (76-79cm) wingspan.
Interesting Note: Much of the snow petrel's life is spent sitting on icebergs, from which they'll dive down into insanely cold waters to feast on fish, krill, cephalopods, mollusks and various carrion. When they take off from the water, they run along its surface in such a way that earned them their moniker "Petrel", named for the Biblical account of Peter walking across the water toward Jesus.
This amazingly resilient bird is one of only three species which nest farther south than all other birds - all the way to the frozen cliffs of inland Antarctica, and have even been seen as far south as the Geographic South Pole.

BOTD: Lapland Longspur
Photo: Gregory "Slobirdr" Smith
"Found throughout the Arctic zones of Europe, Asia, and North America in summer, this is one of the most abundant breeding birds of the far North. Birders who visit the tundra in summer will find Lapland Longspurs very common almost everywhere there, the bright males singing their short warbling songs from hummocks or rocks or while flying. In winter the birds come south in flocks, to forage in windswept fields. Although they range widely across the continent, the vast majority winter on the Great Plains, where flocks in the thousands seem to reflect the abundance of the species on its northern nesting grounds."
