hey there!

please don't take this the wrong way, because i'm genuinely just asking. i've seen your criticism of aang and kataang appear on my dash from time to time, and it just got me wondering: how can you enjoy the show?

i understand that you feel passionate about katara, and i suppose about the entire story, but. aang is like on screen 90% of the time, and he gets his happy ending too (as happy as it can be, of course, with having his entire culture and people on the brink of non-existence). how do you reconcile your love for the show with your dislike for its main character and how the narrative rewards him?

and once again, please understand that i'm not attacking. i'm just curious to see at what point does someone stop being a fan and start being simply critical of a certain media, if you know what i mean.

I just don’t pay attention to him very much. Even in the finale, Zuko’s ending and story stands out more to me. Him standing before the crowd in his sparkling crown, announcing that he wants to bring in a new era of love and peace, that’s powerful to me. Watching Zuko go from an abused boy who thinks his only worth comes from accomplishing an impossible task in his desperation to appease his abuser, to a literal king taking back his power and using it for good, is a powerful story.

As for Katara, to me, her true ending is the Agni Kai. I wrote a whole post about it. That is the culmination of her arc, where she is able to display her power and use it to overthrow the regime that she’d grown up being terrorized by. And then after Zuko was nearly killed, Katara was able to save his life just like he saved hers. The way their stories intertwined was beautiful, and it was a beautiful conclusion to Katara’s story, watching her not have to feel helpless for once and bringing the change she’d always dreamed of.

As you can probably tell, these are my favorite characters so I was satisfied by their endings. To be honest on my rewatch, I usually kind of just skim the Aang vs. Ozai fight because it’s just an anime battle. The characters hadn’t even met prior to the fight, so the emotional depth is lacking compared to the Final Agni Kai.

As for the balcony scene? I don’t watch it. And I think it says a lot that by simply not watching it, nothing is lost. It adds nothing to either character and only serves to give Aang a reward. Before that moment, nothing about the finale suggested Katara wanted that at all. Neither character played a significant role in the other’s finale arc. There was absolutely no narrative significance between them.

But there was for Zuko and Katara.

To me, Katara ended the story as a heroine and warrior, not a love interest. With Zuko, that was her ending. So that’s the real ending to me, because that’s what her character means to me.

i wanted to put more fics by qaisal here, but I’ll keep it at one lol. all I’ll say is that there’s a reason this person has the top 3 fics in the ryeji tag! the witch school setting, the shapeshifting, the enemies to lovers….i love this fic so much

2. among the sea’s salt by ForTheFlowers

I remember this being one of the first long ryeji fic I read and I was just completely blown away by first, the amount of research put into it to make it a believable historical fiction, second, the amazing set up and characterisation, third, the perfect evolution of an enemies to lovers arc, and fourth, just the sheer quality of writing. this is definitely one of THE best ryeji fics on ao3

3. what’s in a name? by snowandwolves

I don’t have a single bad thing to say about this fic. the worldbuilding is absolutely PHENOMENAL, the writing is superb, the angst and ensuing fluff (and smut) WILL make you cry. I have it downloaded so y’all will have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands

4. indigo by khevzs

I cried more than once reading indigo and I am NOT ashamed to admit it. literally the slowest of burns and yet IT’S DONE SO WELL. parent ryeji my loves…..the perfect balance of angst and fluff is 👩‍🍳💋

5. champion of the geunhwayang by khevzs

THE ryeji fic of all time. like cmon. once again, im a sucker for historical fiction and khevzs pulled this off so well!! the setting, the cultural undertones and traditions displayed, like this fic should make the list for just the research put into it alone. would have paid a LOT more attention in school when learning about this time period if it was done in this format. also, the characterisation is just perfect. the transitions into different phases of ryeji’s relationship is so believable and done perfectly. we can only pray khevzs will come back to finish this masterpiece

AAAAAAA ANON YOU'RE SO SMART. I have thought the same thing about Gepard's reaction to the dream; I think he'd be wary. He would be worried it was just a regular dream and not a Dream-dream, and I don't think he would tell anyone about it, because he doesn't want to break anyone's heart all over again with false hopes.

The part of this that's really killing me though is GEPARD NOTICING SAMPO IS STALKING HIM and TAKING SAFER ROUTES TO PROTECT HIM, THAT'S SO FUCKING GOOD. Gepard feeling eyes on the back of his neck in a way he hasn't felt in so long, and instead of being alarmed like a normal person, he just feels at peace. Like ah, he missed this feeling, and he didn't realize how badly he did until just now...

ooooooh, ok ok ok, we're clawing into the inner reaches of my psyche with this one.

There is a scene, in The Dark Days Pact by Alison Goodman. The Dark Days series is about demon hunters in Regency England, it's very good just generally esp. for people who like Buffy, but wanted them to be more repressed about it. The romance is between the MC and her mentor. Anyway, in the second book, he removes her coat. We're in Regency England - she's dressed as a man for demon-hunting reasons, and a man needs help, removing his coat - he can't do it by himself, he needs a servant/a wife to do it bc of how the coat is designed. (and god, I can tell from reading the scene, how smug the author is knowing this historical fact). Anyway, the male lead removes her coat, basically undressing her, and they both have a meltdown for 5 solid pages about it. over a coat. Peak romance, as far as I'm concerned.

AU:

The antarctic empire is holding a ball for the oldest Prince's 21. Birthday, Technoblade. Said prince is bored and mostly annoyed by all the people who try to suck up to him in the hope of gaining his interest, romantically. Cause a prince like him who was supposed to take the throne would need a partner, right?

Throughout the night he stays disinterested in basically anyone, until he sees him. A young man his age with fluffy blond hair and shiny green eyes. They catch eyes and Techno looses his breath, finding the man the most beautiful he had ever seen and the mischief in the man's eyes fiut Techno's energy.

However, for some reason he feels like he had met the man before and when he walked up, the young prince walkes away. It turned into a cat and mouse chase throughout the rest of the gathering, ending at the balcony.

The two talk and Techno learns that it's Dream, the prince of the Esempi. They get to know each other and get along immediately, sharing their Dreams of living a free life but knowing they had to stay to take care of their people.

They get close and eventually share a kiss. But when Dream has to leave he reveals that he had always been in love with Techno deep down. Techno is confused and Dream takes it with a sad smile and as he leaves he confesses that he was to marry the prince of Kinoko, George, as their families had made a deal for the wealth of the countries.

Dream leaves and breaks Techno's heart. When everyone is gone Philza, Techno's father, talks to techno about the night and 'how happy he was that him and Dream seemed to still get along'. Techno asked what he meant and Philza explained that they were close friends as children and that they both had always claimed to get married one day. They had lost sights of each other though, when Esempi started having trouble with rebels who wanted indepentence.

Ever since Techno lived with the feeling of guilt, cause while Dream had lived through hell with the Techno always in his heart, Techno had forgotten about him. Now his heart was broken and it made sure that he would never ever forget him again.

A week later he got an invitation to the wedding of Prince Dream and Prince George.

Ooo now that that you finished rgu I’m curious what you’re thoughts were on it and how you liked the show?

oh i love it so much… such a good series. it handles its themes incredibly well, with much more tact and care that i was expecting for something this old. i definitely need to rewatch it bc its so dense and filled w sm symbolism. it took a while for me to adjust to its weird n off putting, absurdist tone but once i did it was genuinely such a joy to watch, esp the last 10-ish eps. its such a scathing n real critique of the patriarchy and how society perpetuates it, how it gets hammered into women, how it affects everything n everyone. like its not subtle but it never felt preachy to me, which i like.

utena & anthy are such interesting leads not only in their relationship but especially on their own. anthy has been trapped in such an abusive cycle w her brother n in extension the world, that she has a hard time trusting utena despite utena fighting for her. her betrayal genuinely hurt me bc it was just so in line w her that it made me so sad lol. utena my futch king who became heroic bc of her love n empathy for another girl!!! she may be naive n dense but her compassion gave her another life… its insane.

and their relationship god… they complement each other so well. theyre soulmates. theyll find each other in every universe.

other fav characters are nanami, whos eps i always cheer for bc theyre so fun, and juri my toxic mean lesbian representation.
