when it comes to zukki i am very much of the opinion that zuko and suki aren't dating (zuko gay) however i don't really have the same feelings about the bato and kya part of bakyada. i don't think there was ever any rivalry between them for hakoda's affection (bato was willing to step aside for her and she was willing to share) and also i think they were all friends - i imagine that they were hakoda's ice-dodging team. hakoda got the mark of the wise, kya got the mark of the brave, bato got the mark of the trusted, and bato set up the kids' ice-dodging team with that in mind (giving sokka and katara the marks of their parents and extending his trust to aang). if he was kya's other husband, it could be that she loved both her boys and they loved her.

at the very least, i think bato/kya is more likely than hakoda and bato ever figuring their shit out when she was alive. i've said before that the kind of marriage i'm envisioning here is about two men providing for a family rather than a fluid-roles poly relationship, so while hakoda and bato COULD use being co-husbands to be together it's not an expectation. meanwhile bato and kya having some sort of relationship is facilitated by the structure of the marriage. when hakoda's away on chief business bato steps in to fulfill husband and father duties. and if bato and kya were already close, who knows what "husband duties" could entail ;)

and maybe sokka was born 9 months later

Theoretically, Bato has always known this. His father and mother have told him enough stories about growing up in the tundra down south to know exactly how cold it can get down at the Pole. Still, as Bato disembarks from the Kyoshi Island Ferry into the freshly fallen snow, he can't help but feel utterly unprepared by how cold, how white, and how small South Pole Capital City really is. He doesn't know how his team of Grass and Earth type Pokémon will survive in weather like this. He'll have to buy more blankets and warming pads before he even thinks about letting them out of their Poké Balls.

hakoda + sleep headcanon he likes clinging onto something while he sleeps but he also likes being the little spoon. this is why he is usually the middle spoon when he, kya, and bato cuddle <3 when he isn't sharing a bed with anyone, usually he'll just hold onto a pillow or an extra blanket bc it helps him calm his mind down so he can actually fall asleep

bato + happy headcanon he's a very good cook and he likes to cook with kanna a lot. it's their time to gossip about all the swt drama and also keep each other updated with the letters they get from the kids

Hakoda stood in front of Bato, his best friend for as long as he can remember and his most beloved, and Kya, his betrothed, a stunning princess sure to win his heart, mouth agape, as the two recounted their past romance. Bato had said it was to "come clean" as he did not want to get between Hakoda and Kya, nor did he want for Kya to get between them and their friendship, but Hakoda had different plans. Even though the two were still talking, he pulled them into a tight hug and placed a kiss on each of their cheeks, and they all knew it would be okay.

i'm not gonna lie this was much harder than i thought it was gonna be!!! and now i wanna write a full au of this 😭😭

They’ve once played a game to see who can make Pakku turn redder the quickest. It involved a mixture of lengthy-poetic compliments and a whole lot of physical affection. It ends with all four of them kinda just ganging up on Pakku and, as a result, made a red mess out of him.

The three of them always would take turns taking care of the kids, typically one or two partners take care of an energetic Sokka and a lil Katara. It was much of a shock to when both Bato and Hakoda came home to find a little Katara running up to them with a bubble of water floating in her hands and Kya struggling to get a little Sokka out of frozen bath tub.

i feel like bakoda is the only non-canon ship that genuinely could have worked within the canon timeline without making big changes (there are some other minor ones that could fit, but i think they’d still need more screen time devoted to them etc to make it make sense).

(i’m specifically thinking of bakoda in the sense of “they were both married to kya” in this post btw)

apart from potential issues with the audience understanding what’s going on (and maybe the swt being separated from the rest of the world and being small could be used as an in-world excuse to give an explanation) it would really only take adding or changing a few sentences to make it work (and potentially some changes to hakoda and bato’s interactions but i don’t think this is even really necessary).

(disclaimer on the next bit: i am not inuit/indigenous nor am i an expert on their history or culture. i have done some research to make sure i’m not talking completely out of my ass and i’m pretty sure i don’t have anything totally wrong but please do correct me if i made any mistakes)

it would also be another nice cultural addition to the show as both monogamous and polygamous marriages occurred within inuit society, + with it being much more common for polygamous marriages to consist of one woman and multiple men than the other way around (because one man wouldn’t necessarily be able to support multiple women + kids where having several men would lighten the load re providing for the family). i can see that being especially relevant where one of the men has chief duties on top of the duty to his family also - having bato to rely on as well would be a lifesaver when things got busy.

and also i just think they should be allowed to be in love

bakyada walked so zukki could run is very apt bc i don't think bakoda got together until like canon era. hakoda's whole character is about how he chose his duty over the people he loves and bato's whole character is being hakoda's Loyal Sidekick and that's such a perfect recipe for years of mutual pining. "i can't pursue a relationship i have my duties" and "i know this and i'll settle for quietly pining at your side". zukki is sokka with a girlfriend and a boyfriend but bakyada was kya and her two husbands and hakoda never had a girlfriend and a boyfriend at the same time. but sokka does and hakoda is very proud

"Uncle Bato," Katara asks, seriously. "Will you tell us a bedtime story?" She's sitting cross-legged on Sokka's bed, letting her older brother put her long hair into a messy braid. She'd asked Bato to do it but he'd refused. Bato doesn't know how to do things like braid hair or tell bedtime stories, he barely knows how to interact with kids at all! Tonight is the first night he'd been tasked with getting the kids to bed on his own and he has no idea how Hakoda and Kya managed to trick him into it. He's sure some sort of seduction magic must have been involved.

bakoda + sleep -> hakoda has lots of trouble sleeping at night because he has dreams of kya and his children and bato, so bato will always wordlessly bring him a cup of tea with just the right amount of honey in it and he sings an old song that kanna used to sing to hakoda

bakyada + drive -> neither kya or hakoda can drive like they both succckkkkk at driving. hakoda thinks he’s a good driver but he can never stay in the right lane and he’s always speeding, and kya just. cant drive. bato is the only one out of them that can drive but he has really shitty music taste and he never lets kya or hakoda choose the music

zukka + photos

zuko doesn't really like getting his picture taken. it doesn't even have much to do with the scar (though, admittedly, that doesn't help) - he never liked having his picture taken as a child.

sokka, on the other hand, likes to post on his snapchat or instagram story wherever he goes. he's always making katara or suki or aang take pictures of him, or taking selfies with his friends. he doesn't even necessarily post all of them - he just likes having them. (he likes knowing that he'll never have to worry about forgetting the face of someone he loses again, because he'll always have the pictures to remember them by)

when the two start dating, sokka tries to tone it down on how many pictures he takes, and he doesn't post many of zuko until zuko asks why he posts pictures of all his other friends but not him.

"because you don't like getting your picture taken. i figured you wouldn't want them posted."

zuko hesitates, and it's enough for sokka to know he somehow read the situation wrong.

"i can post more of you if you'd like," he offers. "i just didn't think you really cared for that sort of stuff."

"i don't," zuko says carefully. "and i don't really like getting my picture taken, but... i kind of like you letting everyone know we're dating." he lowers his voice and looks away. "i like knowing everyone knows i'm yours."

(sokka starts posting more pictures of zuko after that, because he likes everyone knowing zuko is his too, yes, but he also likes everyone knowing that he is zuko's.)

modern au hakoda and kya grow up near toronto, so they get pretty warm weather in the summers and they're used to it.

bato, however, grows up much farther north in canada and is in for a shock when he goes to toronto for college.

luckily, his roommate and his roommate's girlfriend (hakoda and kya respectively) help him learn how to deal with hot weather. even after he's adjusted to it somewhat, they still make sure they've always got extra water on them for bato and even when the weather gets cooler, they make a habit of going out for ice cream on friday afternoons

it's when the warm weather hits again in spring, on an unseasonably warm day in march when kya and hakoda both brought extra water for bato, knowing he would need it, that they all sort of end up in a jumbled confession about their feelings - bato that he likes both kya and hakoda and kya and hakoda that they both also like bato
