How do I get better at writing?

It's simple really. You write. And you Read.

...Okay maybe not that simple but here's a few pointers.

Stop planning and Talking about your AU's and actually write! This one I feel like is the most important for tumblr users. I've had a lot of people Ask, DM or message me with their ideas which is good but you know what would be even better? If I could read about your world, if I could get immersed in it. I do not want to read an essay about your world, I want to partake in it. I want to feel it. Allow me to experience the world you're creating. You've been showing profiles and detailed world building essays for months now but you're not writing your story. WRITE YOUR STORY!

Don't worry if your writing is bad. When you first start writing, it's going to be bad. It's going to suck. It's like drawing. You're going to suck at first. That's okay. That's how you get better. You need to start somewhere. So start and don't stop.

Don't get precious about ideas or first drafts. They will change over time. First drafts, story pitches and production bibles are just that, they're a rough sketch, an idea to be improved. There's a reason that concept art and characters can change so drastically from pilots and pitches. They lay out an idea for you to work off of. As you write, things will change. People like betas/editors will challenge and thus strengthen ideas. Never be satisfied with a first draft when it could be better. Your writing can always get better. Don't be afraid to change.

Create solid realistic characters. Solid characters that feel and interact realistically will engage your audience, your readers regardless of their intentions or their personality. A character that a reader can empathize and relate to can do a lot of heavy lifting if you're not confident in your world building as a beginner.

DO NOT USE AI like CHAT GPT. Self explanatory this one. Just don't. It'll make your skill regress if you become reliant on it.

READ. Read books. Read GOOD Fanfiction. Read BAD fanfiction. Writing is one of the skills that you can get better at by simply engaging with other author's work. Take in what your reading even if you didn't like it. Ask yourself why you didn't like it and try to avoid it in your own work. Ask why something you read was good and see if you can emulate it in your own work.

Restrict yourself. Restrictions can be good for you. Set a story in a single room or a set piece, like a factory or a quarry (like classic Dr Who!). Force your characters to interact with characters that they normally wouldn't have, see what happens! They might kill each other, they might not! Write and find out.

Talk with other writers. Talk to people who will challenge your ideas, who will point out flaws in your work. They don't even have to be apart of the same fandom, a story should stand on it's own . One of the best groups I've been a part of was one where we tore each others work apart.

I could go on but basically if there's anything you take from this, it should be: Write. Write even if you're bad. Have fun with it and don't be precious about ideas.

Maybe could you do a short fic on what you said about being with Franco after a race pls? I see it as him wanting just calm and peace, pure fluff, idk what you see he'd want tho!!

You weren’t exactly sure where you were allowed to go, the paddock was a bit of a mess right after the race and with the step up to Formula 1 these places just got more restricted. So you waited by the garage, where you knew he’d walk through.

And there he came, sweaty, tired but the happiest he had ever been in his life. You had already jumped, screamed and almost cried when he crossed the checkered flag so now all that was left was be happy with him, for him. He crashed into you with a hug and as soon as your arms wrapped around his neck he just let himself be hugged, his arms rested around your waist and his head fell to your shoulder. You kissed the side of his face, both unable to stop smiling.

“I still can’t believe you did it. I’m so proud of you, baby” you whispered, still holding him close. “I love you so much”

“I love you more” he managed to say, pulling you closer to him.

“I think you have to go, love. People are looking at me like I owe them something.” you chuckled, pulling away to look at him again. “Let's go, you’re not done yet.”

You walked to his room with your hands intertwined. You watched him in silence as he changed, paying attention to everything he told his coach, to make sure you knew exactly how he was feeling. You just wanted him to be done so you could be alone, just both of you so you could shower him with love. But he had to go.

“See you in a bit, yeah?” he told you, with a kiss to your forehead before leaving the room.

It didn’t even take that long, you were being dramatic. You used that time to collect your things, remembering to take everything of yours and of his too, putting everything away so you could leave as soon as possible. You had just finished cleaning up when he walked in.

“Ready?”

By the time you arrived at the hotel he was exhausted. Franco had lived a long weekend, from cutting his ear to crashing in free practice and finally to finish at P8. It was unexpected to say the least.

“You still need to shower. Or do you want me to run you a bath?”

“Too tired for a bath” he told you, “come in the shower with me?”

You nodded, dropping your things on the desk and making your way straight to the bathroom, Franco followed right behind you. You both undressed quietly and stepped in the shower together. You watched as he relaxed under the warm water and helped him wash. Your hands ran through his body to cover it in soap then through his hair with shampoo to wash away the sweat. He washed everything off and soon you were in bed.

Franco lay on top of you, resting his head on your chest and his arm around your waist. You made sure to hold him close, making him feel comfortable.

“So, first points for Argentina in 42 years, how does it feel to be a star?”

“You’re asking questions too, now?” he chuckled, burying his face deeper into your chest “If you do wanna know, I feel tired, really tired and ready for bed.”

You smiled and kissed his damp hair, running your hand gently up and down till he fell asleep on you.

Hares, as you may already know if you've been following my better half @broncoburro or @forevergoldgame (if you're following neither, you're missing huge amounts of context for the setting!), are nothing like the hares of the real world. They are massive leporids from Northern Vestur and one of the few meurian animals remaining after a historic event known as the Great Hunt where humans wiped out most of the planet's remaining meurian species in order to harvest their meur for relics about 350~ish years ago. They are obligate carnivores and known to hunt humans when the opportunity arises.

The baku is a large, lumbering omnivore with a similar ecological niche somewhere between a panda and a regular bear. They're a rare species, endemic to a single far-flung region of the world, having only just barely escaped extinction. See, while the Great Hunt was headed and funded by the Tri-Kingdom, its reach spanned the entire known world - but the further from Vestur it travelled, the less discriminatory the hunts became. The local peoples who were paid to hunt on the Tri-Kingdom's behalf had little idea of what meur was and what meurian animals were actually useful, leading to mass to mass culling of "useless" meur-touched animals like the baku, whose unusual sleep-inducing abilities cannot be wielded by humans. Regardless of their uselessness, the damage had been done to the species, and only the mundane offshoot survives - though rumors persist about meurian baku.

Sphinxes are scavengers that can be found across the deserts and savannas of the mainland. Unlike their meurian cousin, the manticore, they never evolved meurian flame breath, and their 'stinger' is no more than a vestigial sickle buried beneath the fur of their flowing tails. Instead, they specialized further into human mimicry, using their ability to copy human speech to hunt domesticated animals, naive children, and drunkards.

Now you might be thinking: "why would a teenage girl want to own any of these as pets? None of these sound like animals that should be pets." Well, first off: you'd be hard pressed to find a young girl that doesn't want a wolf or a tiger as a pet, that's just how they are, c'mon.

Second, there are three primary reasons Rhea thinks this is a more realistic idea than it is:

Exotic "pet" owners among the upper class: While exotic pet ownership isn't big in Vestur as a whole, it has a notable presence among the Southern upper class, both noble and common. Rhea is the duchess of the Southern Kingdom so she is well aware of every instance of somebody paying excessive amounts of guilder to import something they shouldn't and stick it in their courtyard. As I've mentioned before, this is a sin Ancha is guilty of, having gotten swept up in a past "teacup baku" craze/scam some 4 decades ago. Unlike her peers, however, she kept her baku, Fig, even after he outgrew his alleged "adult size" of 1'9" at the withers. Others culled theirs once they became large enough to cause mass property damage. Ancha knows Fig is a massive, terrifying wild animal and does not recommend anyone repeat her mistake, but being raised in captivity he cannot be returned to the wild and so she's committed to caring for him for as long of his estimated 70~ish year lifespan that she's here for.

Haretouched Northerners: The "haretouched" is a strange phenomenon that exists in the North. Now, we haven't posted a formal explanation of what exactly being haretouched means yet - I'll save that explanation for Dan to write at a later date. In the meantime, to very briefly summarize what it means: occasionally, a hare will bond with a specific human. Those who have bonded to a hare are said to be "haretouched" - or more bluntly, cursed. The haretouched are treated as pariahs by broader society, though they are begrudgingly tolerated in the North itself and destigmatized by Northern nomad clans. While Northern nobility has done its best to keep the haretouched out of their bloodlines (save for the Lord of the Nomads, who is seldom acknolwedged, much less counted), occasionally a fluke will occur regardless and you end up with someone like Quincy or Lamonte. Rhea, of course, is just a Southern bystander who thinks the idea of having a murder-bunny for a friend would kick ass.

Captive beasts performing in circuses: Self-explanatory. Sphinxes especially are a popular choice for exploitative entertainment because of their mimicry abilities, and are often trained to have "conversations" or "sing."

Only Cybertronian slurs and death threats. Soundwave can be very colourful when he wants to be. His mother would not approve. Optimus doesn't take them to spark, he knows that Sounders is hurting just as much as his crush- I mean- his good friend, Megatonne. (¬‿¬)

Truth be told, I cannot say it wasn't Carlos' fault at all. I mean. He did close the door on Checo just slightly 🤏 But it was so close it was enough to make a big crash. They are probably both at fault, it's a race incident

But why would Charles' fans tear him apart? He probably saved Charles' 2nd place (with eliminating both himself and Checo who were both faster than Charles and could have overtaken him before the end of the race, no?)

Atem grew up playing a lot of games, and it was encouraged. Especially since many games, such as senet, required a bit of strategy to win. It was a way to train his mind from an early age to become the strategist he is.

As Pharaoh, strategy was very important. It allowed him to maneuver things of a political nature into desirable outcomes.

When it comes to making major decisions that can have an impact on others, he will quickly weigh the odds and determine which outcome will be the best.

However, ask this poor boy what he wants off the Burger World menu, and you will be there all day. Ask him where he want's to go just to hang out and have fun, he will stand there like a deer in the headlights. Leave him alone to dress himself and you will come back to the equivalent of a two year old that knows nothing about color coordination. This guy cannot choose for himself. He doesn't know how. As Pharaoh, he never had these choices. They were always made for him.

Since you told us that Megatron and Soundwave are your favourite Transformers. Can you tell me what aspect of their character that made them interesting or your favourite?

So, my bad if I ask way too many.

For Soundwave, it was the Prime version of him that made me fall in love with him. He's just such a brilliant design even if he might not look completely like the original G1 aesthetic you can just tell that it's still him. The most interesting thing to me about Soundwave is that he's so loyal to Megatron. Why? Why is this strange bot so loyal to Megatron and where can I get me a minion- I mean, someone like that in my life. Soundwave is just Superior. All others inferior. Plus ES Soundwave DAMN DAT DESIGN THO MEGS WHAT U DOING BUD???

As for Megs, I think it's how versatile he can be. He can be a wacky 80s cartoon villain who constantly flops on his face to, an insane genocidal crack head who summons Eldritch Planetoid things to the thoughtful, poetic writer but misguided extremist who wanted to be a medic after seeing his friend get hurt, to the soft, gentle protector of Earth in Earthspark. Despite all these interpretations, they all feel like Megatron. You can still believe that these are all the same character in some way, just from different timelines and universes.

Megatron can be a complex character. He had complex ambitions that got out of hand in most cases. Sometimes he realizes that and it's interesting, it gives him weight. And sometimes, he's an evil irredeemable cunt for the sake of being an evil irredeemable cunt and that's just as fun.

I once told Optimus that I killed for the sake of killing. I wanted to make him hurt me, you see, because when he hurts others, he hurts himself. And the thing is, when those words were in my head I didn't think I meant them; but when they left my mouth, I realized that I did. If the world thinks you're a monster, what does it matter? The world is wrong. But when you start to think of yourself as a monster...---Megatron
