Kaguragi addresses everyone as "-dono" but sometimes Rita as "Sovereign Rita". I'm putting Rita-sama and Rita-dono both as "Justice Rita". Normally I'd be inclined to keep the honorifics but since I already used the English form before I should stick to that and subs group conventions. ("-tono/-dono" is an antiqudated suffix that is only used in official documents nowadays. In history, it meant respect for those above you but nowadays it's used by the higher-rank to address those lower politely. Genderless, lower than '-sama'.)

Something about Rita's speech pattern is they tend to use a lot of kanji, as part of their solemn personality and regular legal jargon. I lack the context to evaluate how advanced Rita's kanji are to the average Japanese but the general sense of Rita having a more archaic/complex vocabulary is evident.

Here it is! the east/west cultural difference! Keigo is a big challenge for me as a learner already, let alone a translator. There's no direct dictionary substitution and it really depends on your intuition with usage in either langugaes. The keigo here is humble-type, while to make it sound natural in English, instead of reflecting your own incompetence, you are flattering the other party. In the next line, Kaguragi says because Rita came unannounced, they were inadequate in failing to preapre a welcoming committee. I think the scarcasm is there in English too, but I just feel it's more insulting to imply Rita is not exactly welcome while initiatively taking the "weaker" side (Kaguragi's gaslighting, what's new).

p13: learner's note: the royal kitchen is called 厨房(chuubou) while the word for kitchen I knew was 台所(daidokoro). Research shows 厨房 is a professional kitchen like in a restaurant and 台所 is the one at home. Katakana Kitchen is also in the vocabulary to mean a modern, western-style industrical kitchen. Chinese has lost the distinctioin and uses 廚房 (note!: an extra dot above 厨) for both home or workplace.

p16: I interpret Rita's first concern is in maintaining equality between the kingdoms. A duo alliance between ❤🖤 is only detrimental to a five-kingdom one they are working towards: small circle, and increased hostility from 💛💙 if they believe ❤🖤💜 is their small clique. Yet it is interesting Rita raised the question out of personal curiosity. Remember in the beginning there was this, feeling, ❤🖤💜 are seniors and they've known each other for longer? Now we know Kaguragi is actually Rita's junior in terms of order of sucession. Now they could've what he was like prior to taking the throne. Notice how they never describe him as a liar. Maybe Rita does find it odd a man of his capability feels the need to bootlick Racules.

Immaturity and Impunity: Performative Masculinity in Baki the Grappler

Although Baki the Grappler is over thirty years old, the franchise has seen a global resurgence thanks to a fresh take as an ONA series hosted on Netflix. This was my gateway into the wider world of Baki, a charmingly ridiculous realm that, previously, I had only glimpsed through DVD ads, internet memes, and the occasional offhand recommendation if I were ever in the mood for something mindlessly violent (which, for what it’s worth, I’m usually not). But despite its enthusiastic embrace of playful exaggeration and dramatic pageantry, Baki the Grappler shouldn’t be written off as mind-numbing entertainment for the masses. A critical analysis of Baki as contemporary anime, and a part of pop culture more broadly speaking, can help us all better understand how performative masculinity functions—and why it is so potentially dangerous.

 Itagaki’s long-running manga series has been adapted numerous times. These releases have taken many different forms, including an OVA, a television series, and various video games. For my purposes, I’m focusing on Baki (2018–2020) and its continuation Baki Hanma (2021–2023) in order to analyze depictions of masculinity in Itagaki’s original work while contextualizing them within current sociopolitical climates. 

By way of a rocky relationship between an unrelenting father and an indomitable son, Baki posits that, unfortunately, we live in a world where might often does make right, be it morally, politically, or legally defined. When such culturally defined notions combine with socially enforced concepts of manliness, the results can be as problematic as they are potent. As much as I thoroughly enjoy TMS Entertainment’s animated rendition of Itagaki’s creation, I recognize how it can perpetuate harmful stereotypes, hurtful habits, and generally unhealthful lifestyles while also promoting discipline, perseverance, and self-reliance in equal measure.

I’ve been following the Baki manga recently and I’ve really liked the decision to give Jack his own arc. He’s been an underdog for awhile, probably since his loss to Pickle. One of my hopes is that he finally gets his Demon Back, but other fans theorize he might get a different version due to his altered body.

I have a theory however. The reason jack has been riding so high lately is because this is his final arc. I believe that the enhancement drugs will finally get him, and that he’ll die on his feet. The crowd will give him one last applause as he taken out on a stretcher. His father will finally accept him as a Hanma and praise him one last time.

2023 Anime Year Review!

Happy New Year! I'm gonna start by doing my best to list all the anime I watched this year. I felt like putting them in alphabetical order, so I did. 

The anime I watched in 2023 are: Attack on Titan Final Season, Buddy Daddies, Crash Course in Naughtness, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc, Don't Toy with Me Miss Nagatoro 2nd Attack, Dr. Stone: New World, Frieren Beyond Journey’s End, Helck, Hell's Paradise, Jigokuraku, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, Mashle: Magic and Muscles, My New Boss Is Goofy, My Hero Academy, Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage, Reborn as a Vending Machine I Now Wander the Dungeon, Spy x Family Season 2, Tomo-chan Is a Girl!, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead.

For manga I have been keeping up with Bocchi the Rock, Bocchi the Rock Hiroi’s story, Call of the Night, Chainsaw Man, Demon Girl Next Door, Don’t Mess With Me Nagatoro, Mieruko-san, and Shimeji Simulation. 

Now I'll be giving some thoughts on the year as a whole and mentioning specific ones in categories. There will be no spoilers. 

It definitely looks like a lot, but I know I have watched more in the past. It's tougher finding as much time for anime now, but I desire to give more new shows a shot in 2024 like I usually would. There are a lot of sequels that I watched this year! The new shows were pretty good, with most of them fitting into the realm of being pretty good but not extraordinary. While the continuations on the other end had a lot more extremes, with most of the mainstream shows fitting into the realm of having moments I really liked in between stuff that was lukewarm or frustrating. 

My single favorite is Dr. Stone: New World. Dr Stone continues to be very consistent and have a bit of everything, providing good visuals, fun characters, and interesting applications of science. This season really stepped it up when it came to the story. The climax of this season is the best I've seen this year. It really keeps up the intensity and leaves you guessing what happens next. It got me very excited for what’s next. It’s great on all fronts. 

Most underrated I would give to Reborn as a Vending Machine. I think it's very solid and on the better end of isekai shows. It’s truly a unique premise and worth checking out if you like fantasy and slice of life shows. 

Biggest surprise hit I would go with Mashle. I had not heard of it before this and went into it just thinking it was going to make fun of Harry Potter over and feel like a rehash of One Punch. I figured I’d enjoy a few episodes then drop it when the schtick got old. But it's genuinely funny outside of its magic parody, and does do some genuinely cool magic stuff at the same time. I liked it a lot more than I expected to. 

Biggest disappointment I will give to both Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Arc and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, specifically the Shibuya Incident Arc (yes they are the same season but they are fundamentally separated in the story and in release). Reason being that their issues are very similar. They both have some really cool moments that are surrounded by boring and frustrating shonen action style tropes. Such as dragging fights out dialogue and flashbacks, emotion baiting, and convenient power ups that don’t feel satisfying or earned. Both of the primary villains in these arcs are not very interesting to me. Neither of these shows are terrible, as they still had the core aspects that made me like them initially. But for me they have many disappointing and frustrating aspects. 

What new shows I’m looking forward to in 2024 as of now: Mashle season 2, Dungeon Meshi, Konosuba season 3, My Hero Academia Season 7, Yuru Camp season 3, Sound! Euphonium 3, Solo Leveling, and the new Spice and Wolf. I do want to watch some anime in 2024 that have been on my list, which are the following: Baki, Honey and Clover, and Chihayafuru at least. Baki I know is super fun and super up my alley. Honey and Clover is by the same author as March Comes in Like a Lion (one of my favorite anime), which is enough for me to watch. Chihayafuru comes highly recommended, and from what I know I am confident I will enjoy it. I've wanted to watch these for a while but with following the seasonals it's hard to get to them.

One anime I’m still holding out hope for is Dorohedoro season 2. I do still think we will eventually get it, but I really hope it's soon. An announcement in 2024 would be SHOCKINGly lovely. Another announcement I'd love would be an anime adaptation of Shimeji Simulation. The manga just recently ended and is very good (a post on that is coming soon). 

I really enjoyed this year of anime and manga! I hope you did as well and are looking forward to next year as much as me! I'd also like to mention that I started blogging about anime this year and have really enjoyed doing it! I plan to continue to please stick around! Thank you for reading!

Thank you for asking this question!!! There are lots of moments and little details that I enjoy but here are some that stuck in my mind and I adore.

⛔️WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD⛔️

Agito’s formless style coming out for the first time gave me goosebumps when I saw it. My jaw dropped and I think it solidified my love for a Agito. Also pretty much any time Agito smiles is my favorite (especally ehan he genuinely smiles) I was blown away by this moment- it was so unexpected.

The Julius vs. Wakatsuki is one of my favorite Ashura fights. Wakatsuki getting half his face shredded off was so brutal. I love this fight so much. I wanted to see more of Julius fighting as well. Poor Waka went though so much pain- he practically got thrown around like a rag doll.

The Gensai vs. Kanoh fight was breathtaking. That fight had my heart racing. I thought that Agito would win, I was floored at the outcome. I though for sure that the final fight would be Ohma vs Agito.

I also adore the Gensai vs Ohma fight. It was so brutal. I didn’t know who would win, I’m kinda glad kuroki did in the end. I was surprised to see Ohma still able to give kuroki a run for his money considering he was so badly beaten/injured. That goes to show that health Ohma would be a force to reckon with.

This panel of Ohma made me tear up the first time I saw it. I’m going to get it tattooed on me! He looks so beautiful here....

I wish my mind could be erased so that I can experience the Kengan Ashura Manga again for the first time. The fights got my heart racing, it was such a ride reading it. It kept me on my toes and I was itching to turn the page and find out what happens next.

My favorite Baki moments would have to be when Baki and Yujrio sat down for dinner together- I loved this moment even though I hate Yujiro. It’s weird seeing them in a normal/domestic stuation.

One of my favorite moment that I like to read and re-read again and again is when the Baki cast breaks into Pickle’s enclosure. I don’t know why I just love that scene!!

My favorite fight of all time have to be the pickle vs Katsumi fight. I was in my toes the whole time. I adored this fight and seeing Katsumi grow. This point was the peak of Katsumi’s development and growth, I loved seeing him become that man he was destined to be!!!

A fight that breaks my heart but I also one of my favorites is the Musashi vs Retsu. I bawled my eyes out... and I will never ever ever recover... I go back and reread this fight over and over again... I hope it’s animated one day

Baki Season 4 aka Baki Son of Ogre is ready to blast, release is confirmed by Netflix!

Baki’s universe is vast and is a declaration of war between world famous Japanese martial artists and people from the dark underground world. To date, the makers have released 3 seasons. Baki Season 1- Baki the grappler 1, Baki Season 2-Baki the Grappler 2, and the third season was titled Baki 2018. All the 3 seasons of Baki English Dub are streaming on Netflix.

This whole series is Manga written and illustrated by Keisuke Itagaki. I bet you if you’re interested in the Action/Adventure genre then you must watch it.   Baki Son of Ogre Release Date on Netflix

Netflix’s popular Baki anime series had been renewed for Season 4. It was officially confirmed to be titled Baki: Son of Ogre. Netflix has scheduled Baki son of Ogre release date to be 2021.

Season 4 is a direct sequel to Baki: Dai Raitaisai-hen and as said earlier it is a direct adaptation of the Hanma Baki manga series. Netflix tweeted about Baki Season 4 Release Date and announced it to the world in late 2020.

Considering the timing of the initial announcement done in late October 2020, Baki Staffel 4 release will be scheduled for the last quarter of 2021. It’ll premiere in the Japanese language and followed by English subs and dubs for the rest of the world.

Baki Hanma is the son of Yujiro Hanma, the strongest creature alive on the earth dreaded by countries. He is a one-man army capable of even creating or stopping an earthquake just by one fist. He had the reputation of dismantling huge military operations with his fists alone.

Baki’s mother, Emi Akezawa, a wealthy woman blindly loved Yujiro Hanma. She did everything as per her capabilities and Baki’s father’s wishes in bringing up her son. She trained Baki to turn him into the world’s strongest warrior. Baki was born to be the strongest warrior after his father.

Many fights Baki faced during his journey like (YASHA APE VS BAKI) AND (BAKI HAMANA VS MUHAMMAD ALI JR.) to become the greatest warrior.  When Jack Hanma and Baki Hanma fought both of them were brothers’ sons of Yujiro Hanma their fight was very volatile.

Each and every fight is different because every character has their own techniques and Art forms to fight so that the fight becomes very unexpected and it’s very interesting to see this, so if you’ve not watched Baki anime you must watch it the entire series will give you satisfactory experience.

Before he starts celebrating his victory, 5 of the deadliest and dangerously death-row inmates (BANJO GINGA, CHAFURIN, TAKEHITO KOYASU, KENJIRO TSUDA AND ISSEI FUTAMATA) escape.
