@gisbarbados The fisher folk at Skeete’s Bay in St. Philip get to work cleaning the newly harvested sea eggs. The season opened yesterday after an 11 year ban was instituted to help replenish stocks (September 2004 to September 2015). The open season lasts for 1 month so make sure to put sea eggs on your menu. (A.Miller/BGIS) #barbados #thebgis #bgis #bridgetown #246 #food #seaegg #sea #fisherman #bajan #bajansun

Banana Plant The banana plant is the largest herbaceous flowering plant. These tall and study plants produce a single bunch of bananas and after that fruiting process, the pseudostem dies. However, new banana offshoots develop from the base of the plant and start a new growth process all over again. In Barbados, the leaves of the banana tree are mildly heated in boiling water and used to wrap the dough of Barbados' traditional conkie delicacy in preparation for the steaming until cooked process. Bananas are also used ripe for the purposes of smoothies, fruit salads or for baking banana bread. The green ones are used for cooking purposes. #Barbados #Fruit #Caribbean #IslandLife #Bajan #BajanSun #BajanSUnMagazine

The Barbados Blackbelly sheep is a breed of domestic sheep that was developed in the Caribbean. Although it is likely the Barbados Blackbelly has African ancestry, there seems to be clear evidence that the breed, as seen today, was developed by the people on the island from sheep brought by ships fairly early in the period after Europeans first arrived.[1] This breed is raised primarily for meat. #Barbados #Livestock #Caribbean #IslandLife #Bajan #BajanSun #BajanSUnMagazine

The Stand Pipe Stand Pipes are an integral part of Bajan history and culture and they date back to the 19th century when the introduction of stand pipes became a gathering place for the village people. In 1861 when running was introduced in Barbados, 400 stand pipes were installed giving free water to the people and galvanised buckets were used by the people to transport the water from the pipe to their homes. It was usually the women and children who collected the water and women carried these heavy loads on their heads with a grace and rhythm that can still be seen in parts of Africa today. Social Center The stand pipe then became the central hub of activity in the village. Gossip, news, love affairs, and feuds were all started at the stand pipe while people stood in long lines with buckets or barrels to collect water to take home for cooking, bathing and cleaning.. It wasn't until recently that most of the poorer citizens got water pumped directly to their homes and the stand piple culture died a natural death. During the 1980s the then government ordered all stand pipes to be turned off and this caused some commotion as some people still used the stand pipes. For 1% of the population, standpipes is where they bathe and collect their daily water needs and across Brittons Hill there are still 8 stand pipes in use every day by citizens who do not have running water in their homes. #Barbados #History #Heritage #Culture #Caribbean #IslandLife #Bajan #BajanSun #BajanSUnMagazine

The Clamacherry. As kids, we would squeeze the cherries from this tree to clue the torn pages in their books, make kites and much more. This glue quite messy but extremely effective as an adhesive substance. #Barbados #Bajan #Islandlife #Caribbeanlife #bajansunmagazine #bajansun #bajansunonline
