On July 11th 1274 Robert the Bruce was born in Turnberry Castle, Ayrshire.
Sorry for the lack of posts yesterday I was out the house all day, I am showing friends round Edinburgh today but will try and get a few posts scheduled, this first one is of course a "biggie"
I don't like repeating the same old story, especially on posts like this, The Bruce turns up so often in my posts that it isn't any wonder he is part of the Scottish Psyche. In 2006 Robert the Bruce came third in a poll of ‘most important Scots’, behind William Wallace and Robert Burns. Leaving aside what that says about the nation that produced, among others, David Hume and Adam Smith, Alexander Fleming and John Logie Baird, there can be no doubt that a king that ruled 700 years ago is still very much remembered by Scots today and, even more pertinently, that his life and achievements are deemed to be profoundly influential. It is hard to imagine Edward III or Henry V of England being similarly admired.
Not a lot is known about Robert's early life so unfortunately I do end up repeating parts of his life.....
Looking into how he came to be our Monarch, Bruce’s grandfather had come off second best in 1292 to a rival claimant to the Scottish throne, John Balliol, who then reigned for four years until Edward I deprived him of his kingship in 1296. John Comyn of Badenoch, as Balliol’s nephew, had both an arguably better claim by blood and certainly by power, influence and track record than Robert Bruce, for his own ambitions, whether it be just to become King, or for the sake of ridding Scotland of Edwards army Robert had to ‘deal’ with his rival before seeking the throne for himself.
In this fracturing and fevered environment, the would-be king turned to Bishop Robert Wishart of Glasgow, a man who had shown himself consistently motivated since the 1280s by a desire to keep Scotland intact and independent (though he, like most Scots, had on occasions been forced to acknowledge King Edward as ruler of the northern kingdom). We do not know that Bishop Wishart made Bruce ‘swear upon the Holy Gospels and the tomb of St Kentigern’ to pursue the cause of Scottish independence with his life, if necessary. Equally, no chronicler at the time mentions the introduction of elements of sacramental kingship that the Scots had long sought from the pope but been denied thanks to English claims of overlordship on the day that Bruce finally did become king.
If you've seen the new film about The Bruce, you will know it is all about the man himself, rather than the historical facts in his reign, and that's why I liked it, I mean come on, we ALL know the story by now and if you don't what have you been doing for the past few years as you haven't been reading my posts!
Robert Bruce, was a man possessed with the ability to think laterally and effectively on almost every issue but saddled by his own hand with one of the most dodgy starts to a successful reign as any in history. Some say he learned to think this way after observing William Wallace, I also like to think this, but he had enough savvy himself to be his own man.
The problem with looking at Scotland in those heady days is that, unlike England, we hardly wrote anything down, Edward and his constant war waging meant he had to raise money for these attacks on Scotland and Wales beforehand, so the English always had that extra layer of bureaucracy, while historians can look at some of their records to glean information about Scotland, we mainly have to look at Chroniclers, like Lanecrost, or the likes of Blind Harry, the author of "he Actes and Deidis of the Illustre and Vallyeant Campioun Schir William Wallace" And John Barbour who wrote "The Brus". In the first case Harry wrote his epic over 150 years after William Wallace's murder. At least Barbour was living in an age where The Bruce was alive, albeit for nine of the years, but events and stories were still fresh and must have been repeated often about our Kings heroics in unting Scotland and vanquishing the English. But Barbour was never going to write anything negative about Bruce, it was Robert II, the first of the Stewart line, that asked Barbour to write the poem, it was always going to be a great propaganda exercise.
Okay let's go back a wee bit, there has been some debate about where Bruce was born, some mischief makers even suggest he was not born at Turnberry, after all we have no diminutive proof, but at Writtle in deepest Essex. The Bruce family owned swathes of land down south, and there is no doubt the young Robert would have spent time in the depths of the English royal courts, he was not uncouth Scottish brute, he grew up in a world of fluid identities, no doubt speaking a number of languages, and with easy access to both the overtly powerful and impressively formal English court as well as the highly personal and personable style of kingship still preferred in Scotland.
One of the things Robert the Bruce may very well have learned from the English and used most notably was the commandeering of noble seals to be attached to documents of state in order to present a veneer of unity to the outside world, this is most notable in the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath, it has been argued he took this inspiration from King Edwards, Ragman Rolls, Edward I’s large-scale demand for Scottish seals to acknowledge his right to rule Scotland in 1296.
After Bannockburn and the Declaration of Arbroath King Robert’s genius as a lawmaker and diplomat to rival his undoubted skill as a military leader has also been admired, he had a fine line to tread, while he had gained the upper hand against Edward II's army, many Scots fought against him that day, or at very least supported the English. Even after his death some of those families on the losing side that would come back to try and regain lands and titles from the second Bruce monarch, his son King David II.
The pics are King Robert's statue at Bannockburn and two reconstructions of how Turnbery may have looked, by my Twitter friend Andrew Spratt.

Review : Earl Crush by Alexandra Vasti
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars
This is the 2nd Regency rom-com set in the world of Belvoir’s Library. The MCs are Lydia Hope-Wallace, who is one of Selina’s besties from London that you meet in Ne’er Duke Well, and Arthur Baird, the Earl of Strathrannoch in Scotland. Lydia is an heiress with a lot of money and no marriage prospects, and Arthur has a title, a rundown castle and a lack of funds to make repairs. After a miscommunication meet-cute, they develop the hots for each other.
💚 A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:
- Fake Married - Politics & Schemes - Longing & Lust - Vulnerability & Care - Love Letters - Can’t stop kissing - Only one bedroom - Too many brothers These two are so sweet together! Arthur understands her shyness and anxiety and wants to protect her. Lydia feels strength from him and loves his massive torso. He falls hard and is the biggest cinnamon roll. She is a smart politico with a talent for writing opinion pamphlets. Together they pretend to be married for “reasons” and they keep up the ruse for quite some time and is a lot of fun.
Aside from the romance I really loved getting cameos of characters from the 1st book when Selina & her besties put their wits together to solve the case. I honestly would watch a Masterpiece Theater series about the Belvoir’s Library and its female patrons solving crimes. Also, I may or may not have been teary-eyed at the ending.
I’ve read all of Vasti’s books so far and have liked every one, but am especially loving this Belvoir’s Library series. If you’re in the mood for a Regency rom-coms you’ll love this one too. I’m so excited for Georgiana’s book coming next! Her dog is named Sir Francis Bacon, Bacon for short, and I laughed so hard! 🥓
OUT: January 21, 2025

One of Scotland’s most impressive and recognisable mountains will have its walking paths restored after hillwalkers and charities clubbed together to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Mountaineering Scotland and the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland (Oats) launched a campaign last May to raise £300,000 for essential path repairs on An Teallach in Wester Ross, in the north-west Highlands, asking walkers and climbers to “give the hill a few quid”. The It’s Up to Us campaign has announced that £218,000 has already been donated.
More than 3km (two miles) of paths on An Teallach, a popular target for “Munro baggers” who try to climb all 282 mountains in Scotland, need repairing. The funds raised so far have already allowed contractors and volunteers to repair 340 metres of badly eroded path.
Walking tourism is worth £1.6bn a year to Scotland’s economy, according to the campaigners. A 2019 study identified more than 400km of Scotland’s path network in need of repair, at an estimated cost of £30m and at least £400,000 a year for maintenance. Over time, mountain paths can become damaged by rainwater, heat and footfall, with the problem spreading as visitors divert from damaged paths and put additional strain on surrounding land. As well as ensuring hillwalkers, climbers and runners can safely access mountains, keeping them to paths is essential for protecting local plants and animals.
Alongside its fundraising, the It’s Up To Us campaign is calling for the government to carry out a full audit of Scotland’s mountain paths and develop a funding model for their management. Government funding only covers path maintenance in national parks and NGO-managed land and does not cover repairs on privately owned land, which includes An Teallach. Funding previously available from the EU for privately owned land has not been replaced following Brexit, the campaigners say.
Dougie Baird, chief executive of Oats, said: “We are hugely grateful for all our individual public donors and will be encouraging other hill users to follow their fine example in the coming year to help fix the badly eroded path on this iconic mountain.”
Stuart Younie, his counterpart at Mountaineering Scotland, said: “There is still a lot more to do to deliver our ambition of establishing a sustainable funding model to support the maintenance and upkeep of our mountain paths. An Teallach is one of many mountains in Scotland that needs our support, and it’s up to all of us to do something about it.”
Alan Dobie, a campaign volunteer involved in restoring the first 340 metres of path, said he was keen to see more involvement from the outdoor community in restoring and looking after paths. “It would be great if we could get more outdoor people, more hillwalkers, realising this stuff doesn’t just happen – whether it’s a contractor spending two or three years on a path, or a group of volunteers, there’s a huge amount of effort going into improving and maintaining paths.
“Everybody’s got a role to play, whether it’s just making a small monthly contribution or physically coming out and volunteering.”
Among the campaign’s ambassadors are Keri Wallace, a mountain runner and rock-climbing instructor, and founder of Girls on Hills, a trail running, fell/hill-running and skyrunning company for women.
“Whether you’re a hillwalker, climber, trail runner or mountain biker, you’ll have used hill paths to access the mountains you love,” Wallace said. “These trails not only make the approach easier and aid navigation, but they are also essential to protect the mountain environment.
“By sticking to the mountain trails, we help prevent widespread erosion and damage to fragile mountain flora. This is especially important around popular mountains like An Teallach that see a lot of footfall each year.
“Everyone assumes that these trails are centrally funded, but in reality there is a desperate need for independent investment in the repair and maintenance of trails outside Scotland’s national parks and NGO estates. It really is ‘up to us’ as mountain-goers to give something back by donating towards this campaign and helping raise awareness about the significant funding gap.”

did the thing that i did with music with movies as well, but with 381 instead of 500. made a list of all the new ones I've seen, no point including old ones, or it'd be Wicker Man and Truman Show at the top.
there were some tricky matchups: like Batman Forever v 8 hours of JFK assassination news footage and Gregg Wallace: The British Miracle Meat vs Magical Mystery Tour.
Here's the ten:
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023, d. André Øvredal)
Mothman (2010, d. Sheldon Wilson)
Tetris (2023, d. Jon S. Baird)
Evil Dead Rise (2023, d. Lee Cronin)
Guardians of the Galaxy, vol. 3 (2023, d. James Gunn)
The Adventures of Thomasina Sawyer (2018, d. Brian Brooks II)
The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot (2018, d. Robert D. Krzykowski)
There Will Come Soft Rains (1984, d. Nazim Tulakhodzhayev)
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016, d. Burr Steers)
Me and the Big Guy (1999, d. Matt Nix)
For a note, Godzilla: Minus One would've probably been high, it was on the top 12, but I remembered that I fell asleep in it, so it's gone.
also not sure if Tetris is actually my third favourite movie I watched for the first time this year, or if I just like Tetris a lot. Column A and Column B
my letterboxd wrapped says my most seen actor was Desmond Llewelyn (which makes sense, watched 17 Bond movies), my 'most watched theme' was "Action Comedy and Silly Heroics", with an example being Once Upon a Time.... In Hollywood.
The mean year was 1994, the median being 2004, and the mode being 2023 with 25. the decade with the most was the 2010s, with 104, the least being the 1920s, with 0. the furthest ahead i got was in July, with 46 days. the furthest behind was 20 days, in November and December. the month with the most watched was March, with 50
scenes that fucked me up this year, in no order (with reactions); (from the 16th September)
baby management in The Nightingale (hand covering mouth, oh shit)
roller coaster in Pinocchio 3000 (fuuuck (but to myself, brother asleep nearby))
book photos in Midsommar (proper attention given, was half-watching while reading on phone) also liked/hated the hallucinated dead parents' eyes opening
peep-hole in Evil Dead Rise (this one was a while ago, and at time of writing I've watched 142 movies, so I've forgotten, I do apologise)
Toby stirring on deck in The Last Voyage of the Demeter (eyes widened slightly, lips curled around teeth a bit)
any Deadite eyes in Evil Dead movies.
'LeBron James spawns in Sarajevo exactly one year before the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.' - "u/JodieMcMathers", 22nd December 2023
#i'm calling it last voyage of the demeter#not gonna call it Dracula: Voyage of the Demeter#it's that thing where only recognisable IPs sell#yeah i participate in it#but i don't like it#Break#i'm worried about how biased my rankings might be towards the 'Reddit answer'#not the one you believe in#but what'll get people to agree with you#like what will get me accepted in a given community#like if I put It's a Bikini World against John Wick 4#John Wick's more popular#but there were some gags in Bikini World that I liked#and I thought it was sweet (which gives bonus points)#please note I watched It's a Bikini World because it had Bobby Pickett in it#Monster Mash man

On 11th July 1274 Robert the Bruce was born probably in Turnberry Castle, Ayrshire.
I don’t like repeating the same old story, especially on posts like this, The Bruce turns up so often in my posts that it isn’t any wonder he is part of the Scottish Psyche. In 2006 Robert the Bruce came third in a poll of ‘most important Scots’, behind William Wallace and Robert Burns. Leaving aside what that says about the nation that produced, among others, David Hume and Adam Smith, Alexander Fleming and John Logie Baird, there can be no doubt that a king that ruled 700 years ago is still very much remembered by Scots today and in the Scots psyche, even more pertinently, that his life and achievements are deemed to be profoundly influential. It is hard to imagine any King of England being similarly admired the way we Scots revere the Bruce, our warrior king, the first man to be known as Braveheart.
Quite simply there is no record of where King Robert was born. Consequently, that opened the door to all sorts of claims some of which, disturbingly, have been put forward as fact in school classrooms of all places.
In the absence of anything in the records, historians are reluctant to dwell too much on the subject. Not being a bona fide historian I have the luxury of doing just that.
So how should we approach the issue. Well, the best way, as far as I can see, is by looking at it from two angles, human nature and practicality. Let’s apply that to the one place that appears to have found a lot of favour south of the Border, Writtle in Essesx.
The reasoning seems to be that Bruce’s father was at the Coronation of King Edward the First in the summer of 1274. Bruce was also born that summer so the deduction seems to be that the birth must have occurred in England for Robert, to be at Westminster. Writtle was owned by the Bruce’s so the story has developed that must be where Robert was born. Of course, it also ignores the fact the Bruces had at least a manor house in what is now Tottenham.
Lets start with practicality. Edward’s Coronation took place on August 19. King Robert was born on July 11. Assuming both dates are exact, the young Bruce would have been 39 days old when the Coronation took place. That’s almost six weeks, plenty of time for dad Robert to have enjoyed the arrival and early days of his son and make the journey on horseback from Turnberry Castle to London for the Coronation, or even sailing round the coast and up the Thames.
Now to the practicality. It’s a long journey from Ayrshire to the English capital, a trip that would need plenty of planning if a heavily pregnant lady was travelling. It’s pretty fair to assume, Marjorie, Robert’s mum, even if she had wanted to head south, would not have been prepared to make the journey when she was seven months or more. It’s fair to assume such a trip would have been made via the Bruce lands ie from Carrick to Annandale, south to Yorkshire and then on to Essex.
That’s a formidable trip on a cart, given it’s unlikely Marjorie could have gone on horseback. Bumpy tracks, crossing the mountainous spine of England, a foreign country, with regular rest stops along the way, it’s likely the trip would have taken about a month. I really can’t see her wanting to spend time on a galley either.
So at the very latest that would have meant leaving Turnberry in March, still winter, and, given the seasons were much more pronounced in the thirteenth century, it would have made matters a whole lot worse, the party quite possibly having to travel on snow covered frozen ground especially high up the Pennines. It just does not make any sense.
On the human nature side, we have to remember that Marjorie, by all accounts, was a determined woman used to having her way. Is it really likely that such a lady would want to have her firstborn son anywhere other than her family home? I doubt it.
She would want to be surrounded by the familiarity of Turnberry, family and the servants she knew well, safe in the midst of lands owned by her family for many years.I doubt she would have wanted to give birth far away in a foreign land surrounded by people she did not know, perhaps even speaking a dialect she did not understand.
There may not be a historical record of where Robert was born but common sense insists it would only be Turnberry. I think it’s high time everyone acknowledged that. Everything does not have to be written down to be obvious. So let’s stop entertaining this nonsense that Bruce was born anywhere else, especially Writtle.
